Homestay provides English language students with the opportunity to speak English outside the
classroom and the experience of being part of a British home.
What to Expect
The host will provide accommodation and meals. Rooms will be cleaned and bedcovers changed
at least once a week. You will be given the house key and the host is there to offer help and advice as
well as to take an interest in your physical and mental health.
Accommodation Zones
Homestays are located in London mainly in Zones 2 and 3 of the transport system. Most hosts do
not live in the town centre as much of central London is commercial and not residential( 居住的). Zones
3 and 4 often offer larger accommodation in a less crowned area. It is very convenient to travel in
London by Underground.
Meal Plans Available
♢ Continental Breakfast
♢ Breakfast and Dinner
♢ Breakfast, Packed Lunch and Dinner
It’s important to note that few English families still provide a traditional cooked breakfast. Your
accommodation includes Continental Breakfast which normally consists of fruit juice, cereal(谷物类食
品),bread and tea or coffee. Cheese, fruit and cold meat are not normally part of a Continental
Breakfast in England. Dinners usually consist of meat or fish with vegetables followed by desert, fruit
and coffee.
Friends
If you wish to invite a friend over to visit, you must first ask your host’s permission. You have no
right to entertain friends in a family home as some families feel it is an invasion of their privacy.
Self-Catering Accommodation in Private Homes
Accommodation on a room-only basis includes shared kitchen and bathroom facilities and often a
main living room. This kind of accommodation offers an independent lifestyle and is more suitable for
the long-stay student. However, it does not provide the same family atmosphere as an ordinary homestay
and may not benefit those who need to practise English at home quite as much.

Recently I spoke to some of my students about what they wanted to do after they graduated, and
what kind of job prospects they thought they had.
Considering that I teach students who are trained to be doctors, I was surprised to find that most
thought that they would not be able to get the jobs they wanted without “outside help”. “What kind of
help is that?” I asked, expecting them to tell me that they would need a relative or family friend to help
them out.
“Surgery(外科手术)”, one replied. I was pretty shocked by that response. It seems that the
graduates of today are increasingly willing to go under the knife to get ahead of others when it comes
to getting a job. One girl told me that she was considering surgery to increase her height. “They break
your legs, put in special things, and slowly expand the gap between the two ends of the bone as it
regrows. You can get at least 5cm taller!”
At that point, I was shocked. I am short. I can’t deny that, but I don’t think I would put myself
through months of pain just to be a few centimeters taller. I don’t even bother to wear shoes with thick
soles, as I’m not trying to hide the fact that I am just not tall!
It seems to me that there is a trend toward wanting “perfection”, and that is an ideal that just does
not exist in reality.
No one is born perfect, however, magazines, TV shows and movies present images of thin, tall,
beautiful people as being the norm(标准). Advertisements for slimming aids, beauty treatments and
cosmetic surgery clinics fill the pages of newspapers, further creating an idea that “perfection” is a
requirement, and that you must go for it, no matter what the cost. In my opinion, skills, rather than
appearance, should determine how successful a person is in his chosen career.

B.it’s right for graduates to ask for others to help them out in hunting for jobs
C.media should be criticised for misleading young people to do surgery
D.it is one’s appearance instead of skills that really matters in one’s career
60.What does the author think of his height?

C. He always wears shoes with thick soles to hide the fact.

There’s a whole lot of things that people fill their stomachs with. Some of them keep people alive.
Some of them taste good to people. Some of them help people win pie-eating contests. Alcohol does
none of those things. Why do people keep drinking it? And what does it do once it gets to their
stomachs?
There are all kinds of alcohol molecules(分子),but the one that people most often pour down
their throat is ethanol (乙醇).Ethanol is very tiny and it dissolves in water, so it gets into all sorts of
places that it’s not supposed to. Alcohol heads for the digestive system. Because it dissolves in water,
it can get into the water in the bloodstream. Because ethanol, to a certain extent, can pass through cell
membranes( 膜 ). It can go almost anywhere. It spreads through the muscles, and is sweated—
unmetabolized( 未经新陈代新的) and whole—through the skin. It gets into the heart. It even takes a
walk through the brain, and this is the secret of its powers.
Alcohol depresses the nerves, and the nerves affect almost every area of the body. Enough alcohol
makes people sleep, so people who become unconscious choke on their own vomit(呕吐物). Most
worryingly, enough alcohol can shut down those parts of the brain just like any other parts. People
become unconscious and their brains simply forget to breathe.
Alcohol is broken down in the liver. Alcohol doesn’t destroy the liver, but products that the liver
breaks the alcohol into do cause damage. A glass of wine per day can not do any harm. Instead, it can
prevent heart attacks or can make someone functionally young. And it is kind of nice to know that
sometimes, relaxation and cheer can be bottled. All that’s needed is to take care how much alcohol is
let into a person’s brain.
61.How does the author introduce the topic of the text?
A.By statement. B. By question. C. By arguing. D. By explaining.
62.Why can Alcohol reach the brain?
A.Because it can move through water molecules in the blood.
B.Because it is small enough to get through any narrow space.
C.Because it is so light that the bloodstream can transport it.
6
学科网(北京)股份有限公司D.Because it is absorbed only by the cells in the stomach.
63.What’s the main idea of Paragraph 3?
A.Alcohol affects the work of the nerves. B. Alcohol has an effect on people’s breath.
C. People are drunk when their brains get drunk.
D. Drinking too much is quite dangerous.
64.From the passage, we can know .
A.many people like a drink when they feel relaxed
B.enough alcohol can control the brain activities
C.alcohol damage the liver indirectly
D.proper alcohol may lead to better sleep
65.What suggestion does the author give on drinking alcohol?
A.Controlling the time of drinking. B. Controlling the amount of drinking.
C. Choosing the kind of drink. D. Choosing the place of drinking.

In today’s motivational literature, failure is often viewed as something to be celebrated.
Inspirational speakers are fond of quoting the words of the novelist Samuel Beckett-“Fail again. Fail
better.” It seems that disappointments are an essential stepping stone to success, a turning point in our
life story that will ultimately end in victory.
However, psychological researches find most of us struggle to handle failure constructively. In
other words, we fail to “fail forward”. We find ways to devalue the task at which we failed, and become
less motivated to persevere and reach our goals. This phenomenon is known as the “sour-grape effect”,
which was discovered by Professor Hallgeir Sjastad.
Sjastad explains that “sour-grape effect” is a self-protective mechanism. “Most of us picture
ourselves as competent people, so when external feedback suggests otherwise, it poses a serious threat
to that self-image,” he says. “The easiest way out is to deny or explain away the external signal, so we
can reduce the inconsistency and preserve a positive sense of self. We do this even without noticing.”
If you have one bad interview for your dream job, you might convince yourself that you don’t
really want it at all, and stop applying for similar positions. The same goes if you fail to impress at a
sports trial, or if a publisher rejects the first submission of your manuscript. “We tend to explain away
our shortcomings and convince ourselves our ‘Plan C’ is actually our ‘Plan A’,” Sjastad says.
It doesn’t mean we should persevere in goals all the time. It can be healthy to change ambitions if
the process is no longer making us happy. But the “sour-grape effect may lead us to come to this
decision prematurely, rather than hanging on a little and seeing whether we might learn and improve.
Failures are unavoidable. By learning to face the disappointment instead of devaluing its
importance and pretending nothing happened, you may find it easier to achieve your goals.
66. Why does the author mention the speech of inspirational speakers in paragraph 1?
A. To offer an example to handle failure.
B. To describe a shallow understanding of failure.
C. To introduce a common attitude towards failure.
D. To emphasize the importance of experiencing failure.
67. What can we learn from the paragraph 3 about the “sour-grape effect”?
7
学科网(北京)股份有限公司A. It protects us from false feedback. B.It pictures us as competitive people.
C.It poses a severe threat to self-image. D.It denies negative feedback to ourselves.
68. What is the author’s attitude towards failure?
A. Short-sighted. B.Wait-and-see. C.Objective. D.Skeptical.
69. What does the underlined word “prematurely” in paragraph 5mean?
A. Unhappily. B.Mistakenly. C.Hurriedly. D.Carelessly.
70. Which statement would the author most probably agree with?
A. Don’t escape when our self-image is broken.
B. Don’t quit when goals no longer make you happy.
C. Never hesitate to replace “Plan A” with “Plan C”.
D. Never forget to maintain a positive sense of self.

I was in a local store recently when I saw something that opened a window into my soul, which
helped let in a little more light.
I had just picked up some shampoo and was headed to the pet supplies to get some dog food for my
furry friends. I decided to take a shortcut through one of the toy aisles. Blocking my way, however, was
a young father and his four-year-old daughter. The little girl was pleading (恳求 ) with her dad to buy
her a new doll. The dad was being gentle but firm, telling her they couldn’t afford it right now. Finally,
the daughter burst into tears and said angrily, “I hate you!”
I thought that the father would get mad at her for this outburst. I knew that I probably would do so
when I was his age. Instead he just smiled down at her, put his hand on her head, and said, “That’s
alright. You’ll love me later.” I stood there in amazement as he took her hand and they walked off. Then
it dawned on me that I had been in this situation many times myself over the years but not as the father.
In my childhood, many times I grew angry with my parents when I felt my requests weren’t being
answered. Through them all, though, my parents were still patient, loving, and kind to me. They knew
that I didn’t understand why certain things had to happen the way they did. They knew that my anger
was a part of my growing up spiritually in this world. They knew that I would love them later.
Now I have grown up and become a parent of two children. I have deeper understanding of parents’
behavior in different situations. They love their next generation, but more than that, they also know that
they should love them in a proper way. Raising a healthy child means to help him grow both mentally
and physically. That is why we need to trust our parents’ love and give them ours as well. It is never
too late to love them. It is never too late to invite them into your soul. It is never too late to let their light
guide your life.
