M: Then I guess we can buy her a birthday cake. Text 2 M: Excuse me. Do you have time to help take a picture of us? W: Oh, I’m sorry. I’ve got to catch a bus. M: That’s OK. Text 3 M: It really annoys me when Kate calls her friends during office hours. W: If I were you, I would tell her to stop. M: Maybe you’re right. I will talk to her sometime. Text 4 M: Here’s the menu, Madame. Would you like something to drink? W: Yes, please. May I see the wine list? M: Certainly. Here you are. Text 5 M: We need to have some fresh air. Do you mind my opening the window? W: As a matter of fact, I’m feeling a bit cold. Text 6 M: Guess what I’ll be doing this summer? W: What? M: I’m going to work at the Riverside Hotel. W: What exactly will you be doing? M: Let’s see. I’ll be doing some small repairs inside and outside the hotel. I’ll be cutting grass and taking care of the flowers. W: Sounds interesting. What’s the pay? M: Well, uh…about fifteen dollars an hour, five hours a day, and Sunday free. W: That’s good money. What are you going to do with it? M: I’ll pay for the textbooks for next term. Text 7 M: Hi, Sue. How’s it going? W: Oh, hi, Frank, just fine. How are your classes? M: Pretty good. I’m glad this is my last term here, though. W: Why is that? I thought you were enjoying school. M: I was. But now I’m getting tired of it. I’m ready for the real world. W: What are you planning to do when you graduate?M: First, I want to get a job as a computer programmer, and then after five years or so, I’d like to start my own business. W: Sounds good. I still have three terms to go until I’m done. M: You’ll make it for sure. Well, see you later. W: Bye! Text 8 M: Hello, Milton Hotel Reservations. How may I assist you? W: Hi, I’m calling to make some changes to an existing reservation. M: Certainly. Do you have the reservation number? W: Sure, it’s 219. M: That’s a reservation for Sally Menkel. Is that right? W: Yes, that’s right. I’d like to change the check-in date from September 15 to September 16. M: Certainly. I can make that change for you. Is that the only change? W: No, the check-out date will also change from the 23rd to the 24th. M: No problem. We have you arriving on the 16th of September and leaving the 24th of September — altogether, eight nights. Will there be anything else? W: Yes. Instead of a courtyard room, I’d like a room with a view, preferably on an upper floor. M: I can certainly change that for you, but there will be a change in the room rate. The new rate is $199 per night, instead of the original $179. W: That’s OK. These are all the changes. Thank you very much. M: You’re welcome. Have a nice day! Text 9 W: Gordon, I’m going to Keswick in the Lake District this weekend. M: Really? W: Yeah, five of us. Why don’t you join us? We’re getting to Keswick on Friday. Then we’re going boating on Saturday. And on Sunday, we’re going to do some shopping. Then I will take some time to visit my aunt Lucy. M: You’re not going to camp, are you? Isn’t it a bit cold? W: No, we’re not. It is a bit cold. We’re staying in a country inn. It’s not like five-star hotels or anything. But it’s really comfortable. M: Hmm, sounds interesting. You know, it’s the boating that I don’t like. W: Well, what are you up to? M: Sit on my sofa all weekend and watch the DVDs I’ve just bought. And that will be a busy weekend. I may finish watching Friends. W: I don’t know how you can do that all weekend, Gordon. I’d get bored. M: I know, I know. But that’s really what I want to do. Text 10 M: Hello. Welcome to the program. In America, May and June are the traditional months for graduations. A listener in China, Wang Ming, who is about to get an engineering degree, wants to know how American college graduates find jobs. Right now, the answer is: not very easily. A latest study on the college job market showed that employers wanted to hire 22% fewer graduates this year than last. The study also showed that just 20% of those who looked for jobs before graduation have found one by now. This is compared to half of students who hadlooked for a job by this time two years ago. But one difference: fewer of this year’s graduates have started to search for jobs. Engineering graduates were more likely to have started their job search already, and to have accepted a job. This is among the best-paid professions for people with just a college degree. On average, engineering majors expect to start at about $62,000 a year. 1. We went to see it last night. M: How was it? W: Jason thought it was extremely amusing, but I was a bit disappointed. Text 2 M: Susan, I heard you are going to France. How long will you be staying there? W: A whole year. My aunt lives there. I’m going to do a one-month course at a language school and spend the rest of the time traveling. Text 3 M: Let’s see what drinks you’ve got for the party tonight. W: Everything! Beer, wine, soft drinks like Coke, 7-Up…you name it, I’ve got it! Have you ordered the cake? M: Of course. Text 4 M: I don’t have a library card. Do I need one? W: You have to have one only to take books out. You’re okay if you just sit in one of the rooms reading. M: Well then, I’ll just read here. Thank you. Text 5 W: I wish I knew the times of the trains to London. But our phone’s out of order. M: Don’t worry, Grandma. I’ll find out for you on the Internet. W: Thank you! Text 6 W: Excuse me. I wonder if you could tell me how to find a place to have my shoes mended. I’m new in town. M: Ah, there is a good shop not far from here. Go straight ahead and walk about three blocks. I can’t remember the name of the shop, but you’ll find it. It’s near the police station. By the way, you know about the Town Guide? It’s a thin book and has all kinds of useful information. You’ll find one in any bookstore. W: Thanks a lot! You’ve been so helpful. Let’s see. Did you say the repair shop was three blocks away from here? M: Exactly. W: Thanks again. Text 7 M: I’ve been here many times. There are quite a lot of delicious dishes to choose from. What are you thinking of ordering? W: Well, I haven’t decided yet. What are you going to order? M: I think I’ll have the roast chicken. They really make it well here. W: I had roast chicken yesterday when I ate out with Shelly. M: Their beef steak is good, too. You can have it served with beans and mushrooms. W: But I'm not that hungry. Is the fried fish or the seafood salad good? M: Never had them before. Maybe if you get the steak, we could share. W: That sounds like a good idea. Text 8 W: Hello, Mr. White. Do you think it’s possible for us to talk sometime today?M: I’d love to, Miss Wilson, but I’ve got a pretty tight schedule today. I’ve got to finish reading the yearly financial report by 10. Then I have to drive to the airport to pick up an advertiser at 11. After that, I’ll have a meeting with him over lunch. W: Can I see you after lunch? M: Well, let me see…after lunch, I have to attend a senior staff meeting, which may last about two hours. Can you come at 3? We can talk for an hour before I meet my sales team at 4. W: I’m afraid an hour is too short. What about tomorrow morning? M: 9 to 11, then. I’ll wait for you at the office. W: OK, see you then. Text 9 W: Hey, Bill. I hear they’re going to send you to Germany for the new project. M: Boy, news travels fast around here! I only got the orders a couple of hours ago. Rachel doesn’t even know… W: Oh, no? So, what are you waiting for? When do you plan to tell her? M: Well, she is at work at the moment. She doesn’t finish until 5. I’ll have to wait until tonight now, I suppose. W: Well, I was posted there before, back in 2008. It’s OK — a bit like England, really. At least the weather is similar, and the people aren’t much different. The only thing I didn’t like is the food, especially the sausages. What do you intend to do about the family? Are you going to take them with you? M: Well, I’d like to, but I don’t know much about the situation at the moment…you know, about schools and all that. But I hope to move the family out there in a couple of months’ time. I don’t think I want to spend a year and a half out there on my own...I mean, without Rachel and the kids. I mean, I don’t see that much of them now as it is. W: Yeah. Well, that’s the way it is normally in our company, I suppose. M: Yeah. Well, we’ll see. Let me pay for the coffee. W: No, no. I’ll pay. Text 10 W: Hello, everyone. Welcome to our program. I’m Jenny Jackson. The weather here in Juárez has become unbearable. With no rains for over a year, the city is suffering from unusually hot weather. Some light showers have been forecast since last month, but all of them have been effective in surrounding areas. Summer has not even started yet, but temperatures have reached 40 degrees centigrade in the past three days. And people have been warned not to go out of their homes — not if you walk on foot, at least — between 11 in the morning and 7 in the evening. Little kids and the elderly are the ones who have suffered the most from this extreme heat wave. They must drink water all the time. To help our audience have a better understanding of this extreme weather, we have invited Prof. Torres from University of Mexico to our studio this evening. 例 :How much is the shirt? I’ll give a presentation on it in my class tomorrow. Text 2 M: Hello, do you have “The Best of Mozart”? W: Um, sorry, we’ve just sold out. But we can order one for you. If you give us your number, we’ll call you when the CD arrives. Text 3 W: We’d better be going now, or we’ll be late for the train. M: No rush. It’s 8:30 now. We still have two hours. Text 4 M: I am so tired of driving all those hours to work. W: Yeah. I know what you mean. I used to drive two hours to work each way. But now, I live within walking distance of my office. I don’t even need a bike. Text 5 W: Hi, Andy. I didn’t see you in Professor Smith’s class yesterday. What happened? M: Well, I had a headache. So, I called him and asked for sick leave. Text 6 W: The biggest mistake I made, uh…was leaving college in my last year and not completing my education. So, I’m thinking of going back to school. M: School? To study what? W: Ecology. I’m interested in the relationship between humans and nature. M: Cool. Is it what you studied years ago?W: No, I majored in chemistry then. Text 7 M: Good morning, madam. I am your guide for this trip. W: How lovely! Could you tell me about the hotel I’m going to stay at? M: Yes, of course. The Grand Hotel opened in 1990. And it sits on the seaside along the South Coast Highway. It is the most beautiful hotel here. W: That sounds great. M: And there are some restaurants outside. So, at dinnertime, you’d have a lot of choices. W: That’s really nice. I like to have some local foods while traveling. What about the scenery around it? M: The hotel has the best views of the Pacific Ocean. W: Oh, I think I will love this hotel. Text 8 W: Hi, Mike. M: Hi, Alice. Nice to see you. You don’t often come here. W: I usually have fast food delivered to my office. Just came here for a change today. M: The environment here is good — clean and relatively quiet. W: Yeah, and I heard the food is tasty. By the way, are you going to the concert tomorrow evening? M: Yes, are you? W: Yeah. Catherine was supposed to go with me. But she may have to work extra hours tomorrow. Do you know anyone who might like to go? M: No. But if you like, I can ask around. Uh, Joan might want to go. W: Oh, yes. She’s a great fan of classical music. I’ll give her a ring after lunch. Text 9 W: Hi, I’ve only just arrived. M: Oh, good. Now, here are the keys. Let’s go in. There are two apartments. The one for rent is on the right. Do come in. W: Thank you. I like the carpet. The color is nice, isn’t it? M: Yes, and this apartment is in good condition. Here is your lounge. W: Where would we eat? M: There is this corner here, or you can use your kitchen. Come and see. W: The kitchen is quite small. M: Yes, but it has everything — cooker, fridge, even a dishwasher. W: And there are lots of cupboards. M: Let me show you the bedrooms. This is the smaller one. W: It’s a good size, though. M: Now come into the other bedroom. You can see the bathroom, too. W: Yes. It is very nice, but I will have to ask my friend first. And we will come together. I understand it is $800 a month. M: Yes, but a few blocks downtown would be much more expensive. W: Well, thank you. I will be in touch. Text 10 M: Thank you very much. Thank you, Dr. Johnson. Well, it is really great to be back at university again. The thing that I wanted to tell you today is this: Education is important. When I came to the US, I was only thinking about being a carpenter, but I could not read the newspaper. And I could not understand the news on television ormovies or anything like this. So, I entered the city college to take English classes for foreign students. I was very proud that I was going to a college because no one in my family ever went to any college or to any university. You know, when you’re 15 years old in my country, you finish school and then you learn a trade. And that’s exactly what I did. When I was 15 years old, I learned how to be a carpenter. A year later, I came to America. Luckily, I met a very good teacher who encouraged me to take some math classes, business classes, and history classes, and I became a full-time college student. And today, when I look back, I’m so happy because you never know where life will take you. All of a sudden, I started making money because I was really good at math. You know, how to work out everything with math is so important. This is something that I learned when I started my own business, which is doing really well. How much is the shirt? And its vocabulary is similar to English, but I’m finding the grammar awful. W: Well, it takes a while to get it right. Text 2 W: I hope you can come to the party on Saturday. M: I didn’t know I was invited. W: Sure you are. Everyone in our office is invited. Text 4 W: Charlie, do you know a restaurant called Bravo? M: Bravo…I know the name, but I’m not sure where it is. W: It’s on George Street. The food there is excellent. (28) ...................................................................................................................................................... Text 5 W: Brian, I just had an interview. They said they would make a decision soon. M: What are your chances of getting the job? W: Quite good. I think the interview went very well. (31) ..................................................................................................................................................... Text 6 M: Let’s go kite flying, Judy. It’s such a lovely day. W: Okay, but let me finish my chemistry homework first. Would you mind waiting for half an hour, Max? There are a few sports magazines on the table. M: Isn’t the chemistry homework due next Wednesday?W: Yeah, but I have a full day of classes on Monday and a birthday party to attend on Tuesday. M: All right, then. I feel like I need to do some exercise. We could probably just walk by the lake. And I’ll ask Mike to join us. M: That sounds like fun. Let’s do it! (86) ........................................................................................................................................................ Text 8 W: Welcome to our program, Doctor Peterson. Let’s see what questions we’ve got for you today. Here is one: Can cats see color? M: Sort of. In the wild, Many cats hunt at night because their eyes are designed for low light. Your cat can’t see bright colors such as red and green, but it picks up more shades of blue, yellow, and gray than humans do. W: And why do cats give dead birds to their owners? M: When your cat drops a dead bird at your feet, she isn’t bringing you a present. Most cats just drag food home because it’s a safe place to eat. A cat’s mom also brings home things to her children to help them practice hunting. So a female cat without children may bring these “treats” to her owner instead. You may not like them, but at least you don’t have to write her a thank-you note. (150) ......................................................................................................................................................... Text 9 W: How is little Ed doing at the kindergarten, Jack? M: Oh, he’s doing fairly well. It’s been three weeks since he first started going. So Macy and I are pretty used to it now. You should have seen Macy cry when Ed was about to set off on the first day, though. W:I think that’s a normal reaction for mothers. You live quite close to the kindergarten, don’t you? How does he get there? M: Macy walks there with him every morning unless the weather is bad. When it rains, they’ll drive. W: And is Ed enjoying kindergarten?M: Yeah, he loves to have other kids to play with. He keeps telling us things they do together. W: What do the teachers at the kindergarten say about him? M: They said he is bright and that he’s starting to learn how to tell time. W: Isn’t that fantastic? M: That is fantastic. It sounds like everything goes well. (149) ....................................................................................................................................................... Text 10 W: My name is Emily. I had been a dancer for quite a long time. I started studying ballet when I was six years old. By the time I was nine, I was dancing five days a week. When I was eighteen, I decided that I really preferred contemporary dance and that I wanted to do it professionally. So I applied successfully for the training program at the school of Toronto Dance Theatre, and moved to Toronto to attend the program. That was the period of time I enjoyed most in Toronto. I graduated on scholarship and danced professionally for ten years. But after all those years, I found that dance was gradually becoming something that felt like more of a burden than a joy. I found myself increasingly unwilling to drag myself to dance performances, so I quit. I do miss dance often, but it makes me happy to think that I’ll never have to go to another training session again. I didn’t hear the bell, or I would have left earlier. (Text 2) M: Hello, my name is Jack. I need to get in shape. How do I register for the classes? W: We’ll need you to join the gym and then you can find out which classes fit your schedule the best. (Text 3) W: I’ll see you at the theatre. M: Better still, let’s meet in the Red Lion bar to have a nice little talk. W: Good idea, and I’d love to have a drink there. (Text 4) M: Hello, my name is John Arber and I’m calling to ask about the position advertised in Friday’s Daily Mail. W: Yes, the position is still open. You could come over and have a talk with us. (Text 5) M: I have an extra ticket to the concert tonight. Would you like to join me? W: Thanks, but I already have one. You can ask Emily. She might be interested. (Text 6) W: Did you know James went out of business? M: Really? When was that? W: Last month. M: That’s too bad. He had owned that business for 15 years. What happened? W: I don’t know. But life must be pretty tough for his family now. His sons are still so young. One is 13 and the other is 10. M: Well, maybe things are not as bad as they seem to be. W: I hope so. (Text 7) W: Guess what? My mother’s decided to go back to school. M: Why? W: Well, she always loved art, but learned business administration at college, because her parents thought it was difficult for an artist to find a job. M: So she wants to study art now? W: Yeah, oil painting. It’s been her dream for a long time. M: It’s nice to return to learn what she loves. But Kate, I still think old age should be about peace and relaxation. Hurrying to school every day and having to pass exams sounds a bit too much for her.W: You know, she retired last year, and I’m leaving for the university soon. She needs to find something interesting to do. M: Well, maybe. If it’s what she wants... (Text 8) M: Dear listeners, for today’s show, I have with me my colleague Mary Laney. She has been a radio- TV reporter for many years. Mary, welcome to our show. W: It’s a pleasure to be here. M: Would you please tell our listeners who most influenced your decision to become a reporter? W: Both my parents had a great influence upon my choice of work. Instead of trying to pick out a job for me, they helped me learn those things that led me to it. M: How did they do that? W: My father always told me that an education was one of the greatest advantages I could have, one that would always stay with me. He used to tell me that readers were leaders and encouraged me to read all I could. As a result, I’ve always kept up with the newspapers, faithfully read newsmagazines and learned to really enjoy books, all of which have been an invaluable help to me in radio and television reporting. M: What about your mother? W: Well, my mother helped me in a much different way. (Text 9) M: We all know that exercise is good for us. But sometimes it seems too hard to leave the sofa. W: I can see that. You seldom do exercise. M: Plus, having the doctor tell us to get two and a half hours of exercise a week doesn’t really help our motivation much. W: Don’t be discouraged. Now, a new study suggests getting benefits from exercise doesn’t have to be that demanding. Jacob Sattelmair, from Harvard University has done a study into how much exercise is needed to lower the risk of heart attacks. M: Hmm, interesting! W: The study showed that people who put in 300 minutes a week of exercise had a 20 percent lower risk of death due to heart disease. Still, the people who exercised 150 minutes a week did pretty well, too, lowering their death risk by 14 percent. M: And what about the people who exercise half as much as that, like what I’d probably do? Does that help? W: Of course. Even 15 minutes would help. (Text 10) W: Here is a piece of news for bird lovers. Scientists have painted a long road red, yellow and white. They help to discourage the sea birds from wandering onto the highway. The area is home to large crowds of birds that come to stay for the season. Young birds are often attracted to the warm road surface and get killed by the traffic, biology student Hanna tells the broadcaster. The youngsters’ feathers are brown in color. The dark colored road surface makes the youngsters hard to be noticed. As the number of tourists has grown, so has the amount of traffic on the roads. Biologist Kristinn says the plan is to see how the birds respond to the multi-colored road this summer. And if it works, the idea could spread to other parts of the country. How much is the shirt? And we could see for miles from the top. What about you? What did you do? M: Busy packing. W: Oh, yes, of course. I forgot you and Jenny are moving into a new house. It’s on Wednesday, isn’t it? M: Yeah, two days after. I didn’t realize there are so many things to do. W: Can I help out with anything? M: Um, it’ll be nice if you could take care of Henry for a couple of days. W: Henry? It’s Harrison White here. W: Just a second, Mr. White. I’ll look in the diary. So, when is convenient for you? M: Sometime today, if possible. I hear he’ll be away tomorrow. W: Yes, that’s right. He’ll be on a business trip for a week. M: I need to talk about my new program with him before he leaves. It’s urgent. So, would this afternoon be OK? W: Let me see. OK. Mr. Stone is free this afternoon after 3 o’clock. M: Well, 3 o’clock is a bit difficult, but I could make it after 3:30. W: So, shall we say a quarter to four this afternoon in Mr. Stone’s office? And we’re prepared to offer you a starting salary of $55,000. W: I see. And vacation time? M: Oh, you get one day per month in your first year. That is you’ll have twelve days in your first year. And then increase if you stay longer with the company. W: What would be my job title? M: You’d be a junior specialist, and you’d be working under Monica Stansfield, the department manager. W: OK. Is the salary negotiable at all? M: Well, this is typical for a new staff. W: I see. M: Why don’t you think about it? I’ll need to hear back from you by Wednesday. Will that work? W: Sure. No problem. I’ll let you know Tuesday afternoon. (170) ......................................................................................................................................................... Text 10 M: Hello, everybody. Today I’d like to share with you something about John Audubon. John was born on April 26th, 1785. He spent much of his childhood in France, where he spent many hours each day outdoors painting pictures. At the age of 18, he moved to the United States.Well, actually, John began his life in the US as a businessman. However, instead of taking care of his business, John was often off exploring the nature. At first, John spent his time hunting for fun. Then he found that the animals around were very beautiful, and he particularly enjoyed observing the birds he saw. He began studying them, trying to learn the differences between the birds and noticing their different behaviors. Therefore, he painted the birds he observed a lot. In 1819, John realized that he didn’t have enough money to pay his bills. He was very upset that he couldn’t earn enough money to support his family, so he spent time improving his painting skills and began to sell his paintings. He discovered that he could earn some money while doing something he really enjoyed. We’re lucky now to have so many paintings of American birds by John Audubon. You should get a medal for your work. M: It wasn’t hard at all. It was much easier than preparing for the test. Text 3 M: Good morning, madam. What can I do for you? Text 5 M: Ms. Miller, could you tell me how I can improve this article? I got a B plus. W: It’s quite good, actually. The language use is good and the main points are covered. There’s just too much repetition. You could have said everything within two pages. Text 6 W: So Bill, what do you usually do on the weekend? M: I often go to the movies with friends on Friday night. How about you, Sarah? W: Well, I love seeing musical plays on Broadway with my friends. Have you been to many? M: Not really. I saw one when I moved to New York and another when my parents came to visit, but none ever since. Text 7 W: Hello, Helen Smith speaking. Can I help you? M: Hello, this is David. Could I speak to Mike, please? W: I’m afraid he’s not available at the moment. Would you leave a message? M: Yes. I’m calling to cancel a meeting we scheduled for this afternoon. W: Okay. The underwater filming is important for me, actually. How much is this? W: It costs 650 euros. M: Oh, that’s a bit expensive for me. Have you got anything similar but less expensive? Clifford, the big red dog, first appeared 50 years ago along with Emily Elizabeth, a little girl who loves him. Today, we have Norman Bridwell, to talk with NPR’s reporter on his dog’s 50th birthday. So, Norman, tell us how it all started. M: Well, it was 1962, and I was a struggling, not very successful artist in New York. My wife suggested that I try my hand at painting for children’s books. So I did ten paintings and took them to publishers. I was turned down everywhere, except at one publisher, where a young woman told me I wasn’t very good. So if I wanted to paint for a book, I’d need to write one on my own. W: So you did? M: Umm…the woman pointed to a painting I’d done, of a little girl with a big red dog, and she said, “Maybe that’s a story”. And I went home, and over that weekend I wrote the story Clifford the Big Red Dog, and was shocked when it was accepted for publication, because I’d never written anything before. W: I see. How wonderful! M: Yes, it was! My wife was also in shock when she did realize it wasn’t a dream. But, it was just luck. W: But that luck turned into 90 Clifford books that have sold 126 million copies in 13 languages. Text 10 M: Hello, everyone. Today I’m going to talk about small talk, that is, short conversations people often have with strangers they meet. Such exchanges occur at bus stops, on buses, while waiting in line, almost anywhere that strangers gather close together. As a matter of fact, these short conversations are a good way for people to say hello and express friendliness. Such conversations usually cover a wide range of topics. The topics may include weather, customer service, movies, TV shows, local sports or latest news. But you should always keep it in your mind that private questions about salaries, family life, religious beliefs and politics should be avoided during these conversations. Besides, it’s better to ask open-ended questions. If you ask visitors, “Do you like our city?” They may say simply, “Yes”. On the other hand, if you ask, “What do you think of our city?” They will have more freedom in answering. This type of question also shows that you are interested in them. If you appear interested in what people are saying, they’d feel more comfortable talking with you. 1.
