I used to fancy myself a pretty good vacationer. But on my family's recent week-long trip to Mexico our first real
getaway since the pandemic began—I got mixed up.
The huge difference between the expectations and the realities of travel hit me a few hours after we landed in Cabo
SanLucas, Mexico. Driving our rental car to Walmart to buy groceries, we found ourselves stuck in stand-still traffic
for over two hours. I comforted myself with the thought that once we arrived, my vacation self would emerge: relaxed,
flexible and ready for a surfing followed by a margarita(玛格丽塔酒) on the beach—while wearing one of several
sundresses that had been gathering dust in my closet since 2020.
Readers, I did not.
First, I was defeated by what I will well refer to as “traveler's stomach.” Then, I was scared out of surfing by waves
that seemed too messy and powerful for my skills. A chilly fog kept me from unrolling the sundresses I'd carefully
packed, and I ended up wrapped in the same sweat-shirt that I wore on the airplane. All seemed ruined.
During the episode, I nearly drove myself crazy by asking constantly, “How can I make this better'? Can I find a
different route in the traffic?” But it was just about acceptance: getting into the moment, accepting what it is, and
trusting—trusting this may not be the best moment of the vacation, but there can still be good moments of the
vacation.
Indeed, I noticed a shift in my mood. At some stage I did drink a margarita. Eventually, I had an enjoyable afternoon
of surfing in the sun. But when I fondly remember this vacation now, I more often return to curling up on the hotel
couch with my husband, watching “Stranger Things” in sweats; or sitting sand-caked on the beach watching our
daughter digging with a local girl. In those small moments, I was simply present. That's what vacation is all about.
24. How did the author feel on her way to Walmart?
A. Relaxed and expectant. B. Upset but hopeful.
C. Disappointed and defeated. D. Delighted but concerned.
25. What prevented the author from wearing the sundress?
A. Sharp stomachache. B. Huge waves.
C. Cold weather. D. Favored sweat-shirts.
26. What can we learn about the author as the vacation went on?
A. She preferred to stay in the hotel.
B. She sought for better enjoyments.
C. She achieved the goals as scheduled.
D. She embraced the imperfect moments.
27. What is the purpose of the text?
A. To share reflections on a trip.
B. To provide advice on a getaway.
C. To promote tourism in Mexico.
D. To inform challenges of a vacation.

Back in November 2019, Alessandra Mascaro, a volunteer working at the Ozouga Chimpanzee Project in Loango
学科网(北京)股份有限公司National Park, Gabon, West Africa, saw something she couldn't quite believe—one of the apes named Suzee
noticed her son Sia had hurt his foot. After seemingly thinking about the best course of action, she then plucked an insect
out of the air, licked it and applied it to the wound.
Mascaro captured the whole touching moment on film and showed her tutor, Dr. Tobias Deschner, a zoologist
working for Ozouga. The Ozouga team then set about monitoring the chimpanzees in the park and looking for other
examples of the behaviour. Over the following 15 months they captured 76 incidences of the apes applying insects to
wounds on themselves or other group members. The researchers are uncertain why the chimps use the insects, or even
which insects they are, but suspect they might have lenitive properties that could provide pain relief.
However, the finding really proves that the act of applying an insect to treat other's wounds is a clear example of
prosocial behaviour (亲社会行为) that echoes the acts of empathy displayed by human beings. “This is, for me,
especially breathtaking because so many people doubt prosocial abilities in other animals. Suddenly we have a species
where we really see individuals caring for others,” Deschner said.
The team now aims to identify the insects being used by the chimpanzees and investigate who is applying insects
to whom to establish whether the behaviour is based on a social rank. “We need to still put much more effort into
studying great apes because it is crucial to shed light on our own cognitive evolution,” said Deschner.
28. How did Suzee treat her son's wound?
A. By licking the injury. B. By adopting an easy way.
C. By using a certain insect. D. By preventing the infection.
29. Which of the following can best replace the word “lenitive” in Paragraph 2?
A. Original. B. Relieving. C. Refreshing. D. Resistant.
30. What can be inferred from the Ozouga team's study?
A. Apes are capable of caring for others.
B. Chimps can distinguish useful insects.
C. Prosocial abilities come from imitation.
D. Social ranks decide the power of empathy.
31. What does Deschner think of the finding?
A. It remains a mystery. B. It facilitates evolution.
C. It highlights apes' intelligence. D. It clarifies people's doubt.
D
When you buy something for yourself, you probably spend hours shopping around for the best deal on the highest
quality product. Some of you may even desire to know how a brand operates as a company. However, when we donate
money to one of the countless charities out there, most of us don't conduct such research. We have absolutely no idea
about where that money goes to, what it buys or who it helps. At least that is the case for the majority of charities.
Perhaps you should start to take a greater interest in the winding path that your charitable donations take, because many
of them may lead to dead ends.
You really should ask the question: will my donation to this charity actually help the people or cause? Sometimes
it makes matters worse. For example, many charities help African people install water pumps to deliver clean water to
their communities. Money has been invested over the past 20 years to install a total of 60, 000 pumps across sub-
学科网(北京)股份有限公司Saharan
学科网(北京)股份有限公司Africa. However, today 40% of those have failed to work at some point. They have been left there, like expensive
but useless decorations.
One of the least effective means of giving is when charity sends endless shipping containers full of material goods
to underdeveloped nations. For instance, Kenya imports more than 100, 000 tons of clothes from global charities each
year. The issue is that these mountains of regularly imported clothes have completely destroyed local textile industries,
which have previously supported local economies.
Ultimately, to whom and how much you give is your choice. It is important to provide highly specialized services
instead of material goods. As a general rule of thumb, the more your donation matches the need of the receivers, the
better it will be for the long-term prosperity of those you want to help.
32. What do most people do when they donate?
A. They keep track of their donations.
B. They neglect the process of charities.
C. They select products of highest quality.
D. They do research on application of funds.
33. Why is the example of water pumps mentioned in paragraph 2?
A. To stress effective giving. B. To illustrate a fault investment.
C. To confirm a charitable failure. D. To complain the pumps' quality.
34. Which view will the author most probably agree with?
A. Donations should meet local demands.
B. Ineffective charities must be abandoned.
C. Material goods can boost textile industry.
D. Specialized services turn out satisfactory.
35. Which is the best title for the passage?
A. Has your donation hit a dead end?
B. Why should you make a donation?
C. Where does my donation take its way?
D. Will my donation to charity really help?

阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的文章。
On the first day of school, I stared in awe at the huge buildings. This high school was definitely bigger than the
one I had previously attended.
This was my second year of high school, but my first year of school in St. Louis. I had decided the night before
that I would be much happier in a new school if I made friends that were so-called “popular”. Getting in with the right
group of people would make my life a whole lot better. I even bought a new outfit and had my hair styled just so the
first day would be perfect.
Scared, yet anxious to begin my new life, I walked up the stairs to the front door. The halls were packed with kids
yelling and laughing and telling stories of their summer adventures. My first class was geometry, but where was that?
I was standing in the hall looking confused, when a short, blond girl wearing glasses came up and asked, “Are you
new? You look lost. Do you need help? My name is Diane. What's yours?” Even though she seemed a bit strange,
definitely not the kind of person I wanted to be associated with, I decided to answer her anyway. I was, after all, lost.
After exchanging names. I followed her up the stairs and down a hallway on the right, making polite conversation
the whole way. When we reached my room she said, “Well, here you are. Welcome to JFK, and I hope your day goes
all right.”
I said thanks and waved good-bye. Once inside the classroom, I saw one big group of people huddled around
someone who seemed to be telling some sort of story. I walked over and got close enough to overhear. All eyes were
glued to the guy in the middle of the circle who was wearing a letter jacket covered with patches. I decided that this
guy was popular, so I managed to get a seat right next to him. I said, “Hi, my name is Lisa and I’m new here.” He said,
“Johnny.”

One Possible Version:
Dear David,
I'm writing in answer to your enquiry about our school library.
The library is a modern-equipped building with 3 floors. The first functions as the book lending area, providing
access to an abundant collection of books. The reading room on the second floor is definitely a quiet venue to study
with hundreds of magazines, reference books and newspapers available. The third is an electronic library, preserving
comprehensive digital resources. You can borrow 5 books at a time and must return books in due time. Never scribble
on them.
Sincerely hope the library will bring you academical benefit!
Yours,

One Possible Version:
At the end of the class, I turned to him and asked, “I’m not sure where my next class is, could you help me?”
With a frown, he looked at me and then said a quick no, turned back to his friends, and walked out of the classroom.
As they were walking out I heard him say, “Did you guys see that new girl trying to get into our group? That outfit was
way too strange.” They all laughed and some of them turned around and stared at me. My face hot with shame, I stood
stock-still, not believing what had just happened.
Just at that time, someone came up and tapped me on the shoulder. It was Diane. Like a ray of sunshine, the big
smile on her face swept away my gloom. I struggled to hold my feelings back and told her what I had encountered. A
gleam of concern in her eyes, she said she was sorry and offered to find my next class. At that moment I realized how
wrong I was in wanting to only be friends with popular people. Maybe I shouldn't decide whether a person is worth

W: I'm sorry, but I have to finish this sales report before heading off to a meeting at five.
Text 2
M: Hey, Jennifer. You decided about going to the movies with me tonight, right?
W: Yes, I did, but I don't think I can go. My sister Maggie is coming to stay with me today, and we want to try dinner
at the new Italian restaurant downtown.
Text 3
W: Jim, I've heard that you're giving the opening speech at tomorrow's conference. Are you looking forward to it?
M: Actually, I have butterflies in my stomach. I've never been very confident of addressing a large audience, and I heard
that they're expecting over 300 participants.
Text 4
W: I didn't have time for breakfast this morning. Now I'm so hungry.
M: It's not good to skip meals. Nutritionists say that breakfast is the most important meal of the day.
W: Yeah, I know all that stuff, but I have a deadline for my paper today.
Text 5
W: Is it true? I heard that the council is closing the cheese factory.
M: Yes, well, not exactly. It is only temporary. There was a problem with the machinery.
W: Oh, I'm surprised. I thought it was going to be shut down for good.
Text 6
W: Excuse me. Is this the lost and found room?
M: Yes, it is. What can I do for you?
W: I was in the dinosaur exhibit this morning and I took off my gloves when I took photos. I must have dropped them
there. Did anyone turn them in? They're black leather.
M: No, no one brought in any gloves today. But if you show me the receipt from your visit this morning, I can let you
in so you can go and check. They may still be here.
W: Well, I bought the ticket online. I'll show it to you on my phone.
Text 7
M: Crocker Sporting Goods, may I help you?
W: Hello, it's about a package I ordered from your website. It's being sent to my new home in Chicago, but my move-
in date got delayed, so I won't be there. Can my package be sent to my current address instead?
M: Unfortunately, once the package has been shipped, it cannot be rerouted.
W: Well, no one will be there to receive it. Is there anything you can do?
M: Let me call the shipping agent in Chicago and have them hold the package for you. That way your package will
remain safe until you arrive.

W: Yes, it should be a lot of fun, and most importantly we should be able to get a lot of money for the local children's
hospital.
M: How do you plan on getting to the tennis courts in Kings Park?
W: I'll just take the subway there. Traffic can be pretty bad on the weekends, and it might be hard to find a parking
space. Right, Desmond?
M: Well, there are usually plenty of spots on Rickard Avenue, and that's just a 5-minute walk from the courts. So, I'll
probably drive then.
W: So, do you want to meet for breakfast before the event begins?
M: Sure. I need to be at the park by 9: 30 a. m. , so let's meet one hour before that.
W: OK.

W: So, what made you want to be a sailing instructor, Matt?
M: Well, I spent my summer holidays at my grandparents' by the seaside and my cousin taught me how to sail, but it
never occurred to me until my friend suggested I consider becoming an instructor.
W: How did you find somewhere to train?
M: I searched the courses on the Internet. Although there was a wide range of courses at reasonable prices, a lot of the
ones I liked were full. Finally, I found this school from an advertisement in the newspaper.
W: And did you like the other people on the course?
M: Well, they were all very eager to learn, and I felt lucky to be in a group like that.
W: Tell me more about the course.
M: It was very hard work indeed, but I learnt so much. After the course was over the thing I missed most wasn't the
early mornings, though there were some memorable sunrises. It was never reaching the end of a day without acquiring at
least one different skill. Now I'm qualified. The school has even said I can come back and sail there whenever I want,
which is great.

swimming pool, we have a new indoor one. It's perfect for serious swimmers to practice for competitions. As well as
the gym and the pool, we have a whole range of other sports and activities that you might be interested in. We have
several team sports. In addition to basketball and football, which we've always had, we are now offering volleyball on
Saturday mornings. We also have individual sports. We're continuing our program of classes for badminton and tennis
and we've just opened a new one for gymnastics.
And we have various dance and fitness classes for young people. In case you're wondering how much it costs to
sign up to Westfield, the good news is-it's not very much! To encourage young people to get fit, there is currently a
