Earlier this month,6-year-old lsaac went on vacation to Fort Walton,Florida, with his family. While there, his mother
Garrett learned about Lulu,a restaurant that offers food to customers with food allergies(过敏症).
At LuLu,Isaac could eat a salad and roast chicken with rice.“lsaac looked at me as if he was asking me,Is this
ok?”Garrett said. Once his mom gave the OK,Isaac enjoyed for the first time the experience of ordering and eating at a
restaurant.” “That look on his face seemed to show that this was the coolest thing he had ever done.” Garrett said.
Garrett and her family rarely eat out because of Isaac’s food allergies. When they do, she cooks something for Isaac at
home before they leave and brings it with her to the restaurant. “It’s not fun and it feels unfair,” she said.
Their night at Lulu marked a celebration for lsaac. Isaac felt terribly fulfilled because of eating at the restaurant. Garrett
shared the moment on the restaurant's Facebook page to thank them for helping her son. “Thank you from the bottom of my
heart for giving hi m this experience.” she wrote in her post.
Barnett, the restaurant's manager said,“When customers tell the staff that someone in their group has a food allergy,I
help with the order by passing it to the kitchen, ensuring it's cooked in a separate station and offering the finished food to the
guests. We have been improving this process over the last 10 years since our allergy program was started.”
On Garrett's Facebook post,Lulu thanked Garrett for sharing her story. “Thank you for sharing your experience with us.”
the restaurant wrote in a comment. “We are excited to see your son so happy!””
Garrett is hoping her post's popularity will make other restaurants, especially the places near her family's home about 30
minutes away from Mashville, provide such a service.” Lulu offers quality services to the guests with food allergies. Nothing
would make us happier than that.” She said.

Black taxis have been a common sight in London for decades. Now these taxis and their drivers have become the focus of
a new exploration into Alzheimer’s (阿兹海默症). For those on the outside, it may seem that behind the wheel of these black
taxis are just regular people who help move us to our destinations. But within their brains is a map of London’s streets that has
put GPS technology to shame for decades.
“The Knowledge”, the test for London’s taxi drivers, stands among the hardest mental examinations one could ever
undergo. It involves recalling information repeatedly from the memory of minute details about 56,0000 streets in London, from
Trafalgar Square to the tiniest residential lanes.
Normally, the hippocampus (海马体) feels the effects of Alzheimer’s most. University College London and Alzheimer’s
Research UK are studying these taxi drivers’ brains, as it has been found that the hippocampus controlling the brain’s short-
term memory and spatial (空间的) memory systems is enlarged in their brains. Moreover, the taxi drivers’ hippocampi continue
to enlarge as they go on doing the job for more years, suggesting that perhaps there’s something we can do to reproduce the
effect in the general population.
Lead researcher Hugo Spiers was part of the team which 20 years ago found that, like birds and squirrels, the taxi drivers’
hippocampi gradually got bigger. Indeed, research has found for years that any animal that requires a detailed spatial knowledge
of their territory experiences growth in the hippocampus.
Spiers’ team hopes to deal with Alzheimer’s by studying the taxi drivers’ brains. To collect more information on the
mechanisms (机制) that cause the “brain gain”, Spiers has asked thirty of London’s taxi drivers connected to an MRI machine
to drive around on their routes. The machine will allow the researchers to gather real time observations of the workings of the
hippocampus. “It’s been a joy to help scientists fight with the disease,” said taxi driver Robert Lordan.
8. What can we say about “The Knowledge”?
A. It lasts for a few minutes only. B. It is usually held in London’s busy streets.
C. It is a great challenge to people’s memory. D. It invites some residents in London to be judges.
9. What has been found about the taxi drivers’ hippocampi?
A. They are more likely to be harmed. B. They grow in the taxi drivers’ careers.
C. They benefit from daily communication most. D. They are poor at controlling short-term memory.
10. Why does the author mention the research on animals?
A. To imply the new study benefits the animal kingdom as well.B. To point out that more studies on animals’ brains are needed.
C. To show animals’ hippocampi are very different from humans’.
D. To prove the use of certain knowledge influences brain development.
11. Why do the researchers observe the taxi drivers with an MRI machine?
A. To figure out who has the largest hippocampus.
B. To know how Alzheimer’s develops in their brains.
C. To find out how their hippocampi perform at work.
D. To test whether the special machine is effective.

For most ordinary purposes, machine translation (MT) has got a lot better in the past years. The biggest source of
improvement has been the adoption of “deep learning” in training translating systems. But improvement has also come about
through the expansion of clever companies solving individual tasks. Some have created specialist dictionaries so that important
terms can be translated accurately and consistently. Other inventions combine MT with a human translator’s editing tools,
which means translators spend most of their time checking and perfecting MT output, rather than doing the work of the
translating themselves.
For some translators, being a machine’s editor may sound depressing. This can be seen the other way around, however. A
human repeatedly translating identical formulae can get bored. Allowing the machine to do these boring jobs frees the translator
to apply specialized knowledge, solving more intellectually satisfying problems.
What are those problems? One Madrid-based translator for a big law firm describes a recent task. It involved making a
critical distinction in a legal document: a Spanish word (dolo) that’s properly translated as “wilful misconduct” was translated
only as “misconduct” by software. Since the law requires considerably severer punishment when the misconduct is “wilful”, the
omission (省略) was potentially disastrous.
Today, many translation firms are proud of using MT, not as a crutch (依赖) but as a means to cut costs and turnaround
times. Part of their job becomes knowing what can be automated and what cannot. Instruction manuals can be left to MT while
others like a novel legal argument cannot.
The bad news for some translators is that a tap of repeatable, easy work is being turned off. The good news is that what
remains will be brain-challenging stuff for people who know a language and something else. Tales of artificial intelligence
usually test humans against machines. But the translators of the future will be neither entirely human nor machine. They will be
human beings with mechanical enhancements.
12. What can we learn about machine translation from paragraph 1?
A. It has been mostly used by specialists.
B. Lots of efforts have been made to improve it.
C. Some clever companies have made a fortune from it.
D. It has replaced human translators in some simple tasks.
13. What can be inferred from the case mentioned by the Madrid-based translator?A. Experienced translators are hard to find.
B. Machine translation can be inaccurate.
C. Machine translation has led to many misjudgments.
D. It is difficult for translators to tell“wilful misconduct”from“misconduct”.
14. What is many translation firms’ attitude towards using machine translation today?
A. Positive. B. Critical. C. Uninterested. D. Doubtful.
15. Which of the following can be the best title for the text?
A. Technology contributes to productive translators
B. Translation is faced with a great technical challenge
C. The translator of the future is a human-machine hybrid
D. Career opportunities in the field of translation are increasing

To some people, the sizzle and clatter of restaurant kitchens might be like an orchestra; to me, such sounds behind the
swinging doors just meant chaos. However unpleasant I felt the places were, I decided to apply for a part-time job at a popular
restaurant. The reason was simple: I needed money. I wanted to join a camping trip to the Blue Mountains with my friends, but
that would cost about 150 dollars. “You have to pay for entertainment by yourself,” my parents said.
So I applied, and Mr. Smith, the boss of the restaurant, allowed me to have a try. My job was super easy and boring: the
newly prepared dishes would be put at the counter between the kitchen and dining room, and it was my duty to deliver them to
the right customers.
The first few days were tiring but OK. However, setbacks soon followed as I struggled to keep pace during a particularlybusy lunch rush. I awkwardly spilled a tray of drinks, making loud noises and the floor messy. I was embarrassed and began to
feel nervous. One evening, I mixed up orders for a large party, causing chaos and frustration.
I felt desperate. I screwed everything up. Then I heard Mr. Smith call me, and I went into his office with my head low. To
my surprise, he didn’t blame me. Instead, he made me a cup of coffee. “Relax, young man,” he said. “Try to smile. Things
always go wrong if you can’t really enjoy what you’re doing. Feel the fun in the job, and you’ll be OK!”
I thought he was right. The next day when I was working, I glimpsed into the kitchen and was amazed: in the narrow and
crowded space everyone was busy — the chefs swirling (翻动) pans, the manager yelling customers’ requirements, others
coming and going with dishes to deliver — but everything went smoothly without any lumping or bumping. This was
incredible!

1. 续写词数应为150左右;

Sports and Me
Many people like sports. When it comes to my favorite sport, it is basketball.
The first time I watched an NBA game, I became crazy about basketball because the stars looked so cool on TV. Ever since
then, I have lost my heart to the sport.
I love basketball for two main reasons. For one thing, it requires me to run, jump, switch and try to hit! I’m like wind
flying for my goal, which makes me feel so great! For another, basketball, a team sport, makes it necessary to cooperate with
others. Therefore, I have made many good friends while playing it.
I have played basketball for more than 5 years, and it will still be my favorite sport in the future.
One possible version:
My attitudes towards the restaurant job began to change. I smiled to everyone I met, and they returned me with warmer
smiles, which made me relaxed and even more concentrated on my job. Following the smiles were natural conversations, jokes
and laughter, and an air of harmony was created where I worked. I still made some mistakes like forgetting the change or wrong
deliveries, but they were easily corrected with a little kind reminding. I even tried helping out in the kitchen preparing the food.
“You can be a good chef!” They encouraged me. Why not? Who knew!
On the last day of my contract, I went into Mr. Smith’s office again when I finished my job . I thanked him for giving me the
job opportunity, especially for forgiving me when I caused chaos. My gratitude was sincere, for the experience not just greatly
promoted my understanding of restaurant jobs, but was beneficial to anything else I would do. In return, Mr. Smith thanked me
for my job performance, and paid me the salary that I needed for my camp trip. My father was right: I had to earn it by myself,
because what I gained was a lot more.
