When Chelsie King, a drama teacher in Maryland, and her husband Jeremy, who uses a wheelchair because of
a brain tumor operation, were expecting their first child, they faced a unique challenge: how Jeremy could safely
take their baby for a walk. Unable to find suitable wheelchair-adaptive strollers (婴儿车) online, Chelsie
approached Matt Zigler, a teacher at her school, Bullis School. Zigler, who leads the school’s creative technology
lab, saw this as a chance for his “Making for Social Good” class to design a solution.
The students brainstormed ideas and interviewed the Kings to better understand the requirements. “The
hardest part of the project was putting ourselves in the shoes of a person with physical disabilities,” Zigler told
CNN. “To achieve a successful project we had to use empathy (共情) and really make sure we were thinking about
everything a person with Mr. King’s disabilities would be forced to consider.” They needed a design that was safe,
easy to use, and would allow Jeremy to independently attach and detach (拆开) the stroller from his wheelchair.
The students used 3D printing and materials from Home Depot to create two key products: the WheeStroll
Wheelchair Stroller Attachment for newborns, and a second version for older babies. In just a few months, the
group’s joint effort saw them create an amazing solution allowing people with disabilities to walk their babies
independently, just in time for the birth of the couple’s son.
The Kings were content with the result. Jeremy expressed how excited it was to finally have the ability to take
a walk with his child, something he didn’t think would be possible. The invention gave the family more freedom
and mobility, and the class’s design won two international awards. Zigler stressed the importance of sharing the
design so that others can recreate it in workshops around the world, helping more parents with similar problems.

Educators have long realized that ninth-graders are likely to meet with greater academic and social problems
than students at any other level. Not only are the students making a difficult transition (过渡) from junior high or
middle school to high school, but courses are more challenging than ever before and the pressure to fit in socially
also increases. As a result, innovation (创新) programs are started to help freshmen adjust to and succeed in high
school. In Sewell, New Jersey, a four-day camp program prepares incoming freshmen at Washington Township
High School. This past summer, 217 students joined in the camp.
The opening day of the camp includes icebreaker activities and a treasure hunt that includes finding
classrooms. The camp is housed in the building where freshman courses are offered, but students become familiar
with the entire school.
On the second day of the camp, students go into classrooms and work on skills they will need, such as time
management, study and test-taking strategies, and even college planning. They learn what lockers are like and how
they work.
On Wednesday students take part in games to deepen the ideas introduced earlier in the week. They play study
skills bingo, a musical chairs game based on the interests they share, and a four corners game to identify the
holidays they have in common as well as similar tastes in food and music.
The camp closes with a ceremony during which the campers are given a certificate and a celebratory pizza
party. The transition from middle school to high school has a social aspect, and the camp gives students a sense that
they’re not alone.

The cognitive (认知的) benefits of exercise have been well-documented in studies for years, but a recent study
suggests that grandfathers who improve their cognitive health through workout can pass down those benefits to
their future generations.
The research, published in The Journal of Neuroscience, was built on past findings that cognitive
improvements resulting from physical exercise can be passed on from parents to their children. The next step for
scientists was to see if the same phenomenon (现象) can be observed in offspring two generations.
“We set out to explore whether these improvements might go transgenerationally, influencing grandchildren,”
the researchers wrote in the study.
To do this, the team examined the behavior of some male mice whose grandfathers exercised, as opposed to a
control group that remained sedentary. The researchers discovered that the cognitive improvements that the
grandfathers received from working out were similarly seen in their grandsons.
“Our findings suggested that mice with physically active grandfathers showed obviously improved memory
recall, including both spatial (空间的) and non-spatial information when compared to their counterparts from
sedentary grandfathers.” “This,” they said, “proves for the first time the transgenerational inheritance (遗传) of
cognitive improvements caused by physical exercise.”
More research needs to be done into this phenomenon, at the very least to include female mice rather than
focusing on males and their grandsons to determine if these cognitive benefits can similarly be passed down from
grandmothers to granddaughters. Eventually, studies involving human test subjects might be able to prove these
findings for people as well as animals.
