For most people, having something important stolen feels like a disaster. Robbie Pruitt admitted when his
mountain bike was stolen last September, he got mad. But soon his emotions took a turn. After letting go of his
anger, he found himself on a road to sympathy (同情) instead.
As a biker, Pruitt’s first priority was to buy one again, but when he went bike shopping, he found the pickings
slim. The shortage in supply got him thinking: What if the person who’d taken his bike had done so because he
truly needed bikes to get to work?
With that thought in mind, Pruitt came up with a plan and posted it to a local Facebook group. He offered to
fix bikes free of charge for anyone who needed it. Pruitt also put out a call for bikes people don’t use, which he
would repair—again for free—and then donate to people who could truly use them but didn’t have the budget to
buy a bike.
The day the post went live, Pruitt was excited about a list of 30 used bicycles. And this was followed by more
than 500 posts from people who either had bikes to donate or that needed fixing soon after. By the end of the
month, Pruitt had repaired more than 140 bikes for donation.
Pruitt tries to give his donations to struggling families. Beyond simply satisfying a material need, he has
provided an opportunity for kids in his neighborhood to learn how to fix their own bikes. In addition to practical skills, Pruitt’s lessons teach teamwork, encourage self-esteem, and develop feelings of
community. “Pruitt is certainly providing a service, but it’s not the bikes. It’s the relationships in the community.
It’s the impact he made on people. All the neighborhood kids are spending a lot more time doing something that’s
in their power,” Pruitt’s next-door neighbor Danny told The Washington Post.
24. How did Pruitt feel after he went to the bikeshop?
A. He was angry at the theft. B. He became eager for a new bike.
C. He would rather find his old bike. D. He tried to put himself in the thief’s shoes.
25. Why did Pruitt put out a call?
A. To find his lost bike. B. To collect old bikes.
C. To raise some money for charity. D. To advertise his bike repair shop.
26. Which of the following best describes Robbie Pruitt?
A. Caring and inspiring. B. Considerate and loyal.
C. Outgoing and brave. D. Responsible and humorous.
27. Which of the following can be the best title for the text?
A. Robbie Pruitt: A Bike Repairman.
B. A Bike Thief: A Trouble Maker.
C. A Kind Act: Inspiration From A Stolen Bike.
D. Bike Shopping: An Unexpected Adventure.

Published in the journal Sleep by Mary Carskadon at Brown University and her colleagues, a new study set
out to answer an age-old mystery: why do teenagers stay up so late, and why is it so hard to get them out of bed in
the morning?
Many people believe that social forces like school pressures and partying pleasures are to blame (责
备). Carskadon, however, doubted that biological (生物的) elements might be responsible. To test that
guess, she surveyed 2,000 schoolchildren across the US on their preferred and actual bedtimes and their
physical development, wake times, the times of day when they felt most or least active, and their physical
development.
The results pointed to biology. Sixth-graders (aged 11 or 12) scored higher on “eveningness” and lower on
“morningness” than younger children, even though they were in the same social environment. Therefore,
Carskadon and her team concluded, the practice of ringing the morning bell earlier at middle schools (for 11 - to
13-year-olds) and high schools (for ages 14 to 18) than at elementary schools “may run counter to children’s
biological needs”.
In response, a growing number of US cities began pushing back start times in middle and high schools. In
2019, California became the first US state to pass laws supporting later start times, followed by Florida in May.
Meanwhile, other countries, including Australia and South Korea have made similar changes.
This is certainly a significant step towards improving teens’ mental and physical health. Yet later school start
times alone may not be enough to stop teenagers from sleeping late. If teens stay up till dawn on their phones, or
don’t have a quiet place to sleep, even a 10 am start can do little good. That is why some people argue that schools should include courses on evidence-based practices to improve
sleep. In small studies, researchers at the University of Oxford have found that such courses can significantly
improve sleep quality, even for children from low-income (收入) families who initially reported poor sleep.
28. What did Carskadon and her colleagues try to prove?
A. The problems with existing theories. B. The effective ways to wake up teens.
C. The true causes of teens’ late sleep. D. The impact of late sleep on teens’ learning.
29. Which of the following can replace the underlined part “run counter to” in paragraph 3?
A. go against B. agree with C. depend on D. focus on
30. What is the attitude of the authorities towards Carskadon’s conclusion?
A. Disapproving. B. Doubtful. C. Favorable. D. Unconcerned.
31. What can be inferred from the last paragraph?
A. Sleep education fails to work as expected.
B. Evidence-based sleep education matters.
C. Sleep education in schools is easy to improve.
D. Sleep courses do little good to poor children.
D
Rogues (疯狗浪), called “extreme storm waves” by scientists, are large, unexpected, and dangerous
waves that are at least twice as high as the other waves around them, according to the National Oceanic
and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). These abnormal waves, which happen every day and all over
the world, are highly unpredictable (不可预测地) and can destroy ships that meet with them.
Rogue waves appear to form when large rough waves pass through one another, forming huge walls of water,
according to NOAA. However, why and where they appear is unclear. But using 700 years’ worth of ocean data
including historical records and data in 158 locations around the world, researchers have now created a system for
predicting these “huge beasts”.
The system used Al to assess various elements that might lead to rogue waves. The team trained a
neural (神经的) network using historical wave data. This generated a system that learned the causes of
rogue waves by itself and could work to predict them. But the Al’s methods were hid in a black box.
This means scientists couldn’t know how the Al did its workings. So Hiatfner’s team used a different
machine learning method that provides an equation (综合体) when given data, rather than just a single
prediction , helping the researchers to understand how the AI reached its predictions.
“Our analysis shows that abnormal waves occur all the time. In fact, we collected 100,000 waves in
our data set that can be named as rogue waves by definition (定义),” Hafner said. This system effectively
shows the sign of a rogue wave, Hafner added, and can better protect ships from being destroyed as they sail
around the world. Ship companies can use the device with the system to predict when and where rogue waves
might appear to seek an alternative course.
32. How does the author introduce the topic?
A. By using an example. B. By giving a definition.
C. By drawing a comparison. D. By making an assumption.33. What can the system do according to paragraph 2?
A. Monitor huge sea creatures. B. Guide ships around in the sea.
C. Prevent rogue waves from occurring. D. Predict the hitting of rogue waves.
34. What is the disadvantage of the AI’s methods?
A. They are invisible. B. They depend on too many elements.
C. They make incorrect predictions. D. They don’t deal with data system.
35. How does Hafner find the system?
A. It requires more field tests. B. It has been widely used.
C. It needs further improvement. D. It has a promising future.

Determining the ideal study time is a common worry for students who go all out to achieve
academic (学业的) success, with various elements to consider, such as individual learning styles and
personal goals. 3 6 Here are some suggestions for establishing the best study time that meets your unique
needs and ensures a well-rounded academic experience.
Understanding your learning style is significant in determining the ideal study time. 3 7 Some
common learning styles include visual, auditory and kinesthetic (动觉的) learning. Once you understand
your learning style, you can tailor your study sessions accordingly, making them more efficient and
productive.
38 Are you studying for a standardized test, preparing for an important exam or simply trying to improve
your knowledge on a specific subject? Not all subjects require the same amount of study time. Your study time
should be enough to meet these requirements and help you become excellent academically.
Balance your extracurricular (课外的) activities. While studying is important, it’s also necessary to
maintain a healthy balance between academics and extracurricular activities. Participating in sports or other
hobbies can provide a much-needed break and help reduce pressure. 39
Studying for long hours without breaks can lead to reduced productivity and tiredness. 40 Schedule
short breaks throughout your study sessions to recharge and maintain excellent performance.
Eventually, the ideal study time varies from person to person. Consider your learning style, goals and other
commitments to determine your best study time.
A. A good study environment can help you maintain focus.
B. Finding a study schedule that works best for you is important.
C. Taking regular breaks can enhance concentration and memory.
D. Set aside time for these activities without affecting your study time.
E. Setting clear goals is the first step towards academic progress and success.
F. The amount of study time can vary depending on your academic requirements.
G. People learn differently and what works for one person may not work for another.

My love for dance began when I was very young and I would dream to be a star dancer from time
to time. With the drama festival approaching, the school’s drama club had released a notice for the
dancer audition (试镜) for The Twelve Dancing Princesses. And of course I was the first one to sign up.
As I left the stage after my audition at school, I could feel it: the power, the future. I knew that someday when
dancers’ magazines wrote about me, they would say this moment was when my rise to a star began.
My ballet shoes hurt my feet, but I figured that was helpful. In The Twelve Dancing Princesses, the princesses
danced all night so they probably had foot pain, too. My performance was more touching because of my pain. I
needed to show my devotion even when I wasn’t on stage, so I approached Mr. Ellison, the drama club
advisor. He told me that casting (角色分配) will be posted tomorrow. “Thank you, sir,” I said, using the
almost British pronunciation of Hollywood stars in the1940s. I was so sure that Mr. Ellison would cast me
as a princess.
The next morning, I went to read the cast list. The twelve princesses were first, by number. I scanned from
One to Twelve, but none by me. At the bottom of the cast list, my name finally appeared. My role was a really small
one, an old woman who helped a soldier, not one of the princesses! I was desperately disappointed. Mr. Ellison
must have made a mistake! No one else in the school had my skills or preparation!
I found him in his classroom, but he insisted there was no mistake and added that every role in a
play was important. Unable to accept the fact, I burst into tears. Mr. Ellison managed to calm me down
and encouraged me to have a try in the rehearsal (排练).注意:
1.续写词数应为150个左右;

Possible version
The next day, I dragged myself to the rehearsal. Unwilling to play such an insignificant role, I practiced
dancing absent-mindedly. Noticing my behavior, Mr. Ellison and my classmates encouraged me to cheer up. As the
rehearsal progressed, I began to see the significance of my role. The old woman was more than just a small
character; her wisdom and guidance were vital to the story. Over the following days, I devoted myself to practicing
with great passion and my performance improved greatly. With growing confidence, I eagerly anticipated the day of
the actual performance.
Finally, the great day arrived and “the old woman” couldn’t wait to get on the stage. The spotlight hit
me when I stepped onto the stage, and every movement flowed naturally. The audience cheered and burst into
thunderous applause while I wonderfully danced and confidently delivered my lines. I really enjoyed the moment
by turning a small role into a big one. Afterwards, Mr. Ellison spoke highly of my performance. Since that day, I
have realized that I would continue pursuing my dream of being a dancer, and that every role, no matter how small,
was an opportunity to shine.

12 per student; 1 free guardian every 10 students…
teachers are always free”。

to blame. Carskadon, however, doubted that biological factors might be responsible. To test that guess,

Sixth-graders (aged 11 or 12) scored higher on “eveningness” and

而画线词前的the practice of ringing the morning
bell earlier at middle schools(for11-to 13-year-olds) and high schools (for ages 14 to 18) than at

根据第二段中的“why and where they
appear is unclear… researchers have now created a system for predicting these ‘huge beasts’”可知,疯狗

But the AP’s methods were hid in a black box. This means scientists couldn’t know
故选A项。
