Do you know the following fun holidays?
Yellow Pig Day
The unofficial holiday that falls on July 17 was created in the early 1960s by Princeton mathematics students,
David Kelly and Michael Spivak, while they were working on the special properties (属性) of the number 17,
which is a prime number (质数) that has significance in mathematics.
Mole Day
It’s celebrated every year with a theme by scientists and chemistry students throughout the United States and
around the world between 6: 02 am and 6: 02 pm on October 23 because when written in the month-date format,
the date and time 6.02, 10/23 include the digits in Avogadro’s number (602×1023) in honor of the mole, a
measuring unit in chemistry.
Tau Day
This has much to do with Pi (π) Day. It has been held every year since 2010 on June 28. The day began as a
way to recognize tau. Tau is equal to 2π or 6.283. In recent years, some mathematicians and physicists have
argued for the replacement of pi (π) by tau, but it is not yet widely accepted within the scientific community.
Palindrome Day
Palindrome (回文) is a word or phrase that reads the same backwards as forwards, for example madam.
Palindrome Day happens when the day’s date can be read the same way backward and forward. Because date
formats vary from country to country, not all dates that are palindromic in one kind of date format are Palindrome
Days in another. For instance, April 21, 2024 or 4-21-24 is a palindromic date in the m-dd-yy format, but it isn’t if
you write the date as dd-m-yyyy (21-4-2024) or dd-mm-yyyy (21-04-2024).
1. What is special about Mole Day?
A. It has a different theme every year.
B. It was created by a scientist.
C. It’s the oldest of the four holidays.
D. It’s celebrated only in America.
第3页/共16页
学科网(北京)股份有限公司2. Which Day is closely related to Pi Day?
A. Palindrome Day. B. Mole Day.
C. Yellow Pig Day. D. Tau Day.
3. What can we know from the text?
A. Yellow Pig Day is related to a concept in chemistry.
B. The four holidays each represent a scientific idea.
C. 21-4-2024 is a palindromic date in the m-dd-yy format.
D. The four holidays are all accepted by governments.

When I was young, my dad would always play music in the house. I’d dance to Vivaldi’s The Four Seasons.
Whenever he played Tritsch-Tratsch Polka, I’d grab my skipping ropes and skip to the beat. I’d request
Beethoven’s Moonlight Sonata when I was getting ready for bed. Listening to classical music was part of my daily
routine. I eventually learned how to play the piano.
After I had my own daughter, I was excited to introduce her to classical music. However, this excitement soon
led to disappointment as no matter what piece I chose, she would not listen.
Then one day in October, everything changed. My daughter came home and announced, “I want to dress up as
a bumblebee for Halloween. Can you make me a costume, Mom?” Of course, I agreed to sew her a bumblebee
costume. But at the same time, the bumblebee gave me an idea.
I worked all week on the costume. On Halloween night, my daughter put the costume on and looked in the
mirror. Her eyes lit up.
She began making buzzing noises—and I was ready. “Can you fly like a bumblebee?” I asked. As she began to
buzz around the room, I quickly started playing Flight of the Bumblebee.
As the fast-paced violin music began, my daughter buzzed around to the music. She never stopped moving.
When the music came to its final bars, my daughter shouted, “Play it again, Mom!” So I played it again.
Since that night, classical music has become more prevalent in our household. Eventually, she learned how
to play the violin and guitar.
I still have that costume stored away in a special box. I hope to pass it on to my grandchildren one day and see
what happens.

An Inuit-developed app, named SIKU after the Inuktitut for “sea ice”, allows local communities from Alaska to
Greenland to connect traditional knowledge with scientific data to track changes in the environment, and make
decisions about how to manage wildlife.
A group of Inuit elders and hunters from Sanikiluaq, Nunavut, thought up the idea for SIKU more than ten years
ago to document and understand the changing sea ice they were seeing in southeastern Hudson Bay. The group turned
to the local non-profit Arctic Eider Society (AES) to develop a web-based platform (平台).
Over the years, SIKU has developed, and recently, the elders saw that the platform could help address a familiar
challenge: sharing knowledge with younger people who often have their noses in their phones. In 2019, SIKU was
reintroduced as a full-fledged (全面发展的) social network — a platform where members can post photos and notes
about wildlife sightings, hunts, sea ice conditions and more. The posts tell stories of hunting and traveling; the impacts
of climate change and industrial activity; and the traditions, diets and illnesses of local animals.
Inuit communities are already using the app to inform important decisions. In 2021, for example, elders in
Sanikiluaq were worried that the local reindeer (驯鹿) population had reduced, so the Hunters and Trappers Association
used SIKU to survey hunters and look at recent reported harvest rates. The information led the association to close
the hunt for a short time to reduce pressure on the population and to reintroduce hunting slowly when the number of
reindeer increased.
Traditionally, Inuit communities shared this information orally (口头上地). “We have lived in the environment
for centuries and know about the wildlife. Now armed with SIKU, information is documented in a way that other
people will understand. The advantage of SIKU is that it’s part science and part Inuit knowledge and it supports

8. What was the purpose of developing SIKU in the beginning?
A. To raise money for AES. B. To pass on Inuit tradition.
C. To attract more visitors to Inuit communities. D. To record and learn about the changing sea ice.
9. Why is reindeer mentioned in paragraph 4?
A. To further prove the role of SIKU.
B. To advise people to pay more attention to SIKU.
.
C To call on visitors and locals to protect reindeer.
D. To tell the benefits of the Hunters and Trappers Association.
10. What is the attitude of Lucassie Arragutainaq toward SIKU?
A. Doubtful. B. Worried. C. Puzzled. D. Supportive.
11. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. SIKU: Overcoming Environmental Challenges
B. SIKU: Informing Decision Of Local Communities
C. SIKU: Joining Traditional Wisdom To Modern Technology
D. SIKU: Advantages Over Other Local Social Media Platforms

For any astronaut hoping to survive on the surface of the moon, growing crops will be important. Now,
scientists have taken “one small step” towards growing plants on the lunar surface, after showing it’s possible to
grow thale cress(阿拉伯芥), a small flowering plant, in the lunar soil.
The findings raise hopes that plants could be grown on the moon during future space missions, and even
enable mankind to set up a lunar settlement. “For future, longer space missions, we may use the moon as a
launching platform,” explained Professor Rob Ferl. “It makes sense that we would want to use the soil that’s
already there to grow plants.” Until now, scientists have not grown plants in the soil. “So, what happens when you
grow plants in the lunar soil? What would plants do in a lunar greenhouse? Could we have lunar farmers?”
Professor Ferl questioned.
To answer these questions, researchers from Florida set out to plant thale cress seeds in the lunar soil, add
water, nutrients and light, and see what happened. The researchers chose to use thale cross because its genetic code
has already been fully mapped. For comparison, the researchers also planted seeds in a range of soils, including
those that are similar to the Martian soil. To their delight, the researchers found that nearly all of the seeds grew.
However, they did observe differences between the plants grown in the lunar soil and those grow n in the control
soils. Some of the plants grown in the lunar soil were smaller, while others grew more slowly or were more varied

学科网(北京)股份有限公司in size.
“Growing plants in the lunar soil may also change the moon itself,” according to Dr. Stephen Elardo. “The
moon is a very, very dry place,” he said. How will minerals in the lunar soil respond to having a plant grown in
them, with the added water and nutrients? Will adding water make the minerals friendlier to plants? The researchers
hope to answer these questions in follow-up studies.
12. What’s the second paragraph mainly about?
A. The plants grown in the lunar soil.
B. The significance of the findings.
C. The missions of future space exploration.
D. The hope for setting up a lunar settlement.
13. Why did researchers use thale cress in the experiment?
A. It has a long evolutionary history.
B. Its genes are suitable for the lunar soil.
C. People have a good knowledge of its genes.
D. It has been tested with the lunar soil before.
.
14 What did researchers find about the plants grown in the lunar soil?
A. They didn’t grow well enough.
B. They grew slowly in the dark.
C. They absorbed few minerals.
D. They needed more water to grow bigger.
.
15 What can be inferred from the last paragraph?
A. Growing plants in the lunar soil doesn’t need any water.
B. The lunar soil is actually not suitable for growing plants.
C. Growing plants in the lunar soil is as easy as that in normal soil.
D. There are still problems on growing plants in the lunar soil to be solved.

What Goes Around Comes Around
One day a man saw an old lady on the side of the road. Noticing she might need help, he pulled up, got out and
found that she had a flat tire(瘪胎).The lady was worried. No one had stopped to help for the last hour or so. He could

in the car where it's warm? By the way, I am Bryan Anderson."

As he was changing her tire she rolled down the window and began to talk to him. She told him that she was
only just passing through. She couldn't thank him enough for coming to her aid.
When the work was finished, the lady asked how much she owed him, wiling to accept any amount. Bryan never
thought twice about being paid. He told her that if she really wanted to pay him back, the next time she saw someone
who needed help, she could give that person the assistance he or she needed, and Bryan added," And think of me."

【答案】How to Spend Money Reasonably
In daily life, we all get pocket money from our parents or relatives. Some students spend it the moment they
get it, while the others save it for later use. In my opinion, we should spend money on meaningful things.
Wanting to spend money reasonably, I call on everyone of us to make a careful savings plan. In addition, we
can open a savings account. Whenever we get pocket money, we should put some of it into the hank account. Only
in this way can our money be better managed. Most importantly, we will gradually develop the habit of saving
money.
I sincerely hope that everyone can spend money reasonably.
第二节(满分25分)
【47题答案】
【答案】After the lady finished her meal, the waitress came to collect the bill. The old lady paid with one 100$ bill.
The waitress took over the bill, bowed to say “Thanks” politely and told her to wait a moment for her change. When
the waitress came back to her seat, the old lady was nowhere to be found. The waitress looked around anxiously,
trying to find her but in vain. Just then the waitress spotted some more money and a note on the table, reading “You
don’t owe me anything. Somebody once helped me out in the same way. If you really want to pay me back, just let
this chain of love continue with you.” This was exactly what her late husband often said.
The waitress posted the touching story online, accompanied by words "Thank you! Kind lady!" Looking down
again at the money and the note, she couldn’t hold back her tears. She knew it was going to be hard with the baby
due next month, which kept her worried a lot. But now she was just eager to tell her late husband: “Everything’s
going to be all right. I love you, Bryan Anderson.”
