rough outside of the building. These all help students familiarize themselves with the area
straightforwardly,withoutanytrouble.
The school provides an open space serving as a platform for the visually-challenged
students to play, perform, or celebrate festivals and the students are easy to orient themselves
according to sound, smell, sight and touch. “The idea behind the design was to make the school
more accessible to the students,” Sonecha says, “They come from remote villages and towns in
Gujarat,andIameagertohelpthem.”
During the construction, Sonecha used contrasting colors so that students could easily
distinguishbetweentheelements.Bluewasusedforallclassroomdoors,yellowfortheentrance

with the white walls of theschool, helping thestudents locate differentelements. Differentareas
are of different height and width, which makes the sounds and noises change according to the
echo (回音) produced in these spaces. Furthermore, he cooperated with fellow landscape
architect Lokendra Balasaria to plant more than 1,000 plants of 37 species. These sweet plants
have been grown not only to lead the children to move the school through smell but also to
attractbutterfliesandbirds,andprovideshade.
“The structure of the building is designed similarly to any other school building, only with
a few clever elements. My intention was to avoid making it look distinct from other schools,”
Sonecha explains, “I hope that there are no different schools for such students. Instead, all these

culture shock, all of which attempt to describe the unique experience of being far from one’s
homecountryandculture.
Scientists have studied culture shock for over a century.Rather than focusing on the purely
negative aspects, psychologists describe it as a process of stress and adjustment. The first stage
is the honeymoon phase, when we are filled with excitement about being in another country.
Eventually, as daily challenges arise, we enter a state of crisis and anxiety with unfriendly

from those negative feelings. Finally, after some time we adjust even more and fully accept the
newculture.
One of the factors that determine how we react to cultural stress is our personality. Not
surprisingly, extraverts (外向者) tend to have an easier time adjusting to new cultures. That is
because being in a new country means meeting many new people and spending a lot of time
around them, and extraverts thrive in these situations. But introverts simply prefer to be alone
afterspendingtimeingroups,andonlyhavelimitedenergytospendinsocialsettings.
Cultural intelligence, or CQ, also plays its part. Cultural intelligence is defined as the
capabilityofanindividualtofunctioneffectivelyinsituationscharacterizedbyculturaldiversity.
It hasto do with our interestin interacting with peoplefrom culturally diverse backgrounds, and
our ability to adapt to new cultural context. It is argued that the higher our CQ, the lesser the
effectofcultureshockonourabilitytocopeinnewsituations.
Many effective coping strategies are interpersonal. A recent study found that relating to
others with empathy is significantly associated with lower stress levels abroad. The more we are
able to take on other people’s points of view, the more positive our interpersonal relationships

Nia asked. “No, love,” I replied. “Can we go to a theme park this year?” Robyn asked. “That’s
very expensive,” I said. Disappointment entered our car like a dark cloud, putting an end to the
chat.
Arriving home, I switched on my laptop, went through pictures taken in Uganda (乌干达).
A few months before, I’d been there, working with local schools. As an officer for Teams4u, a
charity that provides resources to people in need, I’d seen what life was like there. I went there
twice a year and loved it. “You must bring your family next time,” one of the local teachers had
said to me. My girls hadnever beenouttoAfrica with me before, butwere always wide-eyed as
