A great-grandfather has spent half a century drawing almost his entire village on a 100ft scroll (长卷纸) he
bought for 10 shillings back in 1969. The 30m scroll now features 320 pencil and ink drawings of buildings from
his hometown Aldridge. It includes images of lost hotels, shops and streets as well as drawings of how this British
town still looks today.
Maurice Ivor Birch bought the long sheet of paper from a car boot sale. He said, “We went to a sale in
Cannock when my son was around four in 1969 and I spotted this great big roll of paper. I thought I could have that
because I used to do little cartoon sketches (素描) of animals for my son to colour in and it seemed perfect.” After
doing about 80 sketches, the self-taught artist thought about what else he could do.
Later, he started drawing buildings of Aldridge where he has lived all his whole life. “A lot of the buildings
have gone. I managed to draw some from what I remembered while others were from old photographs and history
books. Each sketch probably took me about eight hours. It’s just been a hobby that has continued to grow for over
half a century,” Maurice said.
Maurice’s scroll features Aldridge’s former railway station and the old Avion Cinema. He added, “I have
managed to sketch the whole of the old high street, which is unrecognizable today. I have seen this village change
greatly over the years. This is a great way to mark its past. Hopefully, it will be a legacy (遗产) showing the wayAldridge used to be. I’ve always wished my children could see Aldridge as it was and this way they sort of can. It’s
a nice little piece of memory to leave for my kids and grandchildren.”
4. What does the scroll primarily represent about Aldridge?
A. A guide to recent village attractions.
B. An exploration of modern buildings.
C. A study on its rapid business development.
D. An artistic record of its changes over time.
5. Why did Maurice buy the scroll?
.
A To use it for creative art.
B. To satisfy his son’s expectations.
C. To start a family tradition.
D. To take up a new hobby.
6. How did Maurice try to recreate the images of Aldridge?
A. By communicating with known historians.
B. By learning traditional photography skills.
C. By relying on memory and related sources.
D. By visiting cultural sites and local citizens.
7. What does Maurice expect to do with his drawings?
A. Educate children about the power of creativity.
B. Keep Aldridge’s history for future generations.
C. Decorate Aldridge’s railway station walls.
D. Support the effort to repair old buildings.

In much of the western United States, drought and access to fresh water is a critical issue. However, recently
California came up with a novel solution. The state approved regulations that allow agencies to purify wastewater for
drinking. This recycled wastewater may be consumed in homes, schools, and businesses.
As the population in California has exploded in recent decades, the state has struggled to meet demands for fresh
water. Recycled wastewater will allow the state to increase access to the precious resource.
Recycled wastewater is not new to the state. It has previously been used in ice hockey rinks (冰球场), for crops,
and to generate artificial snow. But now, water agencies will have the option to put recycled wastewater back into
pipes for drinking. California is only the second state to allow purified wastewater to be consumed. The first was
Colorado in 2022.
While the idea of drinking recycled wastewater may be off-putting, regulators spent more than a decadedeveloping rules and regulations to ensure safety. Independent panels of scientists also reviewed the state’s rules
around recycled wastewater consumption. All water will be treated for pathogens (病原体) and viruses before being
available for consumption.
So far, the state’s plan has been met with approval from large water agencies. Many of them have plans to
construct wastewater recycling plans over the next few years. In Southern California, the Metropolitan Water District
of Southern California has set a goal aiming to produce 150 million gallons of direct and indirect recycled water per
day. This water will be in the pipes of the 19 million people throughout the six counties that the agency serves.
Officials are aware that a certain amount of public convincing may still be necessary. However, they remain
optimistic about the future of the project, reminding consumers that the water is safe, and that recycled water is
already in use in California.
8. Why does California pass new regulations about recycled wastewater?
A. To ease the pressure of drought. B. To increase the supply of fresh water.
C. To recycle the wastewater for industry. D. To reduce the pollution of the wastewater.
9. What does the underlined word “off-putting” mean in paragraph 4?
A. Surprising. B. Necessary. C. Funny. D. Awful.
10. What can we learn from paragraph 5?
A. The goal of wastewater recycling is hard to achieve.
B. The state’s plan will be conducted by water agencies.
C. Southern California will reduce its water production.
D. People in California tend to prefer recycled water.
11. What do the public think of the recycled water project?
A. Many people still disapprove of the project.
B. The public are optimistic about the project.
C. It will never be suitable to use recycled water.
D. The project is the only solution to water shortage.

Art, as a form of therapy (疗法), was first developed in the 20th century and has gained in popularity in recent
years. Self-expression through artistic creation has treated value for those who are seeking deeper understanding of
themselves.
From my own personal experience, art and creativity has been one of the few things that I can use to adjust and
describe my inner most feelings. It was invaluable to have a space where I could lose myself even for just a moment in
the brushstrokes (笔触) or pencil lines of whatever I was creating. Growing up, it was one of the only spaces whereI could actually express my own emotions. Now, even though art is my job, I still use it to quite my mind and express
myself.
According to the British Association of Art Therapists, art can be used as a mode of expression and communication.
It is not necessary to have any prior experience in art because art is being used as a medium for curing and is not the
main focus. Art therapy can treat people from all age groups, from children to the elderly. In addition, it can cure
various psychological problems, including emotional or behavioral problems, learning or physical difficulties and so
on.
It is important to bear in mind that while current research does illustrate that art therapy improves mental health,
these studies has a small number of people in them. Therefore, the conclusion cannot be considered definitive. More
research is needed to find conclusive (确凿的) evidence of the impact of art therapy on mental health.
12. How does art influence the author?
A. It greatly inspires creativity. B. It brings spiritual comfort.
C. It enhances work efficiency. D. It improves life quality.
13. What can we know about art therapy according to paragraph 3?
A. It can be widely applied to different generations.
B. It mainly focuses on people’s emotional problems.
C. It can help people treat their organ problems.
D. It works better for people with an artistic experience.
14. What does the last paragraph mainly talk about?
A. Art therapy’s targeted subjects. B. Art therapy’s current experiment result.
C. Art therapy’s practical value. D. Art therapy’s need for improvement.
15. Which can be a suitable title for the text?
A. Art: A Wonderful Job Trend B. Exploring the World of Art.
C. Art: A New Way of Treatment D. Spreading Art to People.

Emily was checking the party list with her mother. The exams were over and Emily wanted to invite her friends
for a party.
“Emily, aren't you going to invite Janet?” her mother asked. Janet had been her best friend since childhood who
lived across the street but now Emily had made new friends. “Mother, I am now a part of Purple Girls Club and we
have rules about friends,” Emily answered hesitantly. “What rules?” her mother asked.
“Only very pretty girls can be in our group. And Janet is so... you know... dark. I can't be seen with her. It is bad
for my image.” “Emily, I can't believe you base your friendship on appearance rather than character. I had expected
better judgment from you than this nonsense,” her mother retorted (反驳) angrily.
Emily sank into silence. In her heart she knew her mother was right. Sometimes she felt ill at ease with her
“cool” friends too.Just then, her father called, “Emily, come here.” Emily went and paled when she saw the report card in his
hands.
“Emily, how come you failed each subject? You were my pride, but now you even need to take supplementary
(补充的) exams next month.”
She hated to see such a look of disappointment in his eyes. The truth was that the Club left her with little time
for studies. The girls got together almost daily for movies, shopping, and partying. It had seemed like so much fun,
but now it left a bitter taste in her mouth.
Knowing how strict her father could be, Emily went to her room and opened her copies. Seeing her homework
filled with red crosses, Emily felt awfully terrible. How could she have neglected her studies so much?
She called Gina, the leader of Purple Girls Club, “Gina, can you lend me your copies? I need them to complete
my notes for the exams.” Gina erupted into laughter, “Exams? Who cares? Emily, there are other ways of passing
exams.” One by one, she called her so-called friends but no one was willing to help.

My Views on Pre-made Food
In recent years, pre-made food has become popular due to its convenience. Its biggest advantage is saving time
and effort, especially for busy students and workers. Moreover, standardized production ensures consistent taste and
reduces cooking failures.
However, pre-made food has drawbacks. Some products are high in preservatives and lack freshness, which may
harm health if consumed long-term. Additionally, over-reliance on it weakens people’s cooking skills and family
bonding.
In my opinion, its future depends on balancing convenience and quality. Manufacturers should prioritize natural
ingredients and nutrition. Meanwhile, consumers can use pre-made food wisely - combining it with homemade
meals for a healthier lifestyle.

【答案】 Emily sat depressed on her bed, searching hard in her mind for other names she could turn to. Suddenly,
Janet's name flashed across her mind. With a heavy heart and a bit of hesitation, she dialed Janet's number. To her
surprise, Janet answered the phone cheerfully. When Emily explained her situation, Janet didn't hesitate for a second.“Of course, Emily. I'll come right over with all my notes.” Janet patiently helped Emily with all the difficult concepts.
With Janet's help, Emily began to understand the subjects better and felt more confident about the supplementary
exams.
Next Monday, as the two friends entered the school together, Gina saw them and called out. “Emily, what are you
doing with her? You're supposed to be with us, the cool girls.” Emily looked at Gina firmly and said, “Gina, I've
realized that real friendship isn't based on looks or popularity. Janet is a true friend who helped me when I was in
trouble. I don't care about your rules anymore.” Gina was taken aback by Emily's words. From that day on, Emily
and Janet's friendship grew even stronger. She also focused more on her studies and slowly regained her father's
pride.
