Colin Farrell has completed the Dublin Marathon by pushing his friend in a wheelchair across the finish line.
The 48-year-old actor ran the final 4 kilometers of the 42 km race while pushing his friend Emma Fogarty, who
lives with a rare skin condition, to the end of the race.
Back home in his native Ireland, Farrell ran the marathon to raise money for DEBRA, an Irish charity
supporting people who, like Fogarty, have the incurable genetic condition epidermolysis bullosa (EB) — also
known as butterfly skin.
Emma Fogarty was born with a severe form of the condition, as she was born with no skin on her left foot and
right arm and can develop very painful swelling from even the slightest touch. But now, Fogarty is Ireland's oldest
surviving person with the condition, and after reaching a milestone of turning 40 in June, she and Farrell decided to
complete the race together.
"I have known Emma for many years. She is what courage and pure determination are all about. That run was
nothing compared to the pain she is forced to undergo every single day, even though she doesn't show it. It was anhonour to see her waiting for me with 4 km to go, each of those representing a decade of her life, and to do the final
stretch together. I'll never forget it." said Farrell.
Fogarty and Farrell originally set out to raise €400,000 ($660,000 AUD) for the charity but now aim to hit the
million-euro mark ($1.6 million AUD), after the pair completed the marathon in just over four hours.
4. What is the purpose of the DEBRA?
A. To promote a healthy lifestyle.
B. To encourage people to run a marathon.
C. To support people with an incurable skin disease.
D. To help the disabled people to make more friends.
5. What inspired Fogarty and Farrell to complete the race together?
A. Farrell's desire to get popular online.
B. Fogarty's strong interest in running.
C. The advice to improve Fogarty's fitness.
D. Fogarty's reaching a milestone of turning 40.
6. What does the underlined word "undergo" in the fourth paragraph probably mean?
A. Avoid. B. Bear. C. Cherish. D. Escape.
7. What can be inferred from the last paragraph?
A. The fundraising event received great response.
B. They will race together again in the near future.
C The money raised is far below their expectation.
D. They completed the marathon within four hours.

Are athletes nearing the limits of what’s possible? Are they struggling to break records? The hammer throw
(链球), for example, hasn’t seen a new world record since 1986. Yet, athletes frequently outdo themselves in other
sports, such as the 400-metre sprint.
Although professional athletes often boast impressive muscles, simply increasing muscle mass does not
guarantee improved athletic performance. This is partly because muscles lose efficiency as they grow. More muscle
mass produces extra force, but the benefits decrease as muscle mass continues to grow and muscles will eventually
approach a hard limit on what they can achieve.
An athlete’s dominant muscle fibre type also significantly impacts performance. Sprinters (短跑运动员) havea high concentration of fast-twitch fibers (快肌纤维) in contrast to marathon runners, who have a high
concentration of slow-twitch fibers. Fast-twitch fibers are richer in energy stores, produce more powerful
movements and tire us out more quickly than the slow-twitch variety. This difference sets a speed limit on high-
endurance sports like long-distance running.
Muscles set a ceiling on how hard athletes can work, but performance also depends on what athletes do with
their muscles. In the 1968 Olympics, Dick Fosbury used an innovative strategy for the high jump that raised the
bar. Instead of soaring forward over the pole, he turned his body mid-flight. The backward jump enabled him to
leap over the pole with less effort. Five years later, Dwight Stones perfected the “Fosbury Flop” and broke the high-
jump world record using this method.
Technological advancements in sportswear also significantly boost performance. Shoes equipped with carbon-
plated insoles (碳板鞋垫) can give runners an advantage. This type of footwear limits energy loss, meaning the
runner has to put in less work to run faster. World Athletics allows athletes to compete with these shoes as long as
the soft base is no higher than about 4 centimeters, so it’s possible that this sportswear could lead to new running
records.
Ultimately, while muscle limitations exist, innovative techniques and advancements in sportswear continue to
redefine athletic potential, suggesting that records, even seemingly unbeatable ones, may yet be defeated.
8. How does the writer introduce the topic?
A. By listing different sports events directly.
B. By raising questions on athletes’ concerns.
C. By emphasizing the efficiency of muscle mass.
D. By analyzing the limits of athletic performance.
9. What can be learned about the muscle fibre types according to paragraph 3?
A. Fast-twitch fibers are ideal for Marathon runners.
B. The muscle fibre type only has a small impact on performance.
C. Slow-twitch fibers are more powerful and tire us more quickly.
D. Sprinters possess more fast-twitch fibers than marathon runners.
10. Why does the author mention the “Fosbury Flop”?
A. To praise Stones’ breaking the world record.
B. To reveal limitations in high-jump.
C. To prove the role of creative techniques.
D. To illustrate the physical peak in athletes.11. What does the text mainly tell us?
A. Only specific sports can see new records.
B. Muscle mass guarantees athletic performance.
C. Muscle limitations make new records impossible.
D. Records may be broken with innovation and technology.
【答案】8. B 9. D 10. C 11. D
D
Many scholars agree that a meaningful existence comes down to three factors: the coherence of one’s life, the
possession of clear long-term goals and the belief that one’s life matters. But we believe there is another element to
consider.
Imagine the first butterfly you stop to admire after a long winter or the scenery atop a hill after a fresh hike.
Sometimes existence delivers us small moments of beauty. When people are open to appreciating such experiences,
these moments may further improve how they view their life. We call this element experiential appreciation, an
ability to detect and admire life’s inner beauty as events happen.
To better understand this appreciation, we conducted a series of studies involving over 3,000 participants.
Initially, we had participants rate their coping strategies to ease their stress. Those managing stress by focusing on
their appreciation for life’s beauty reported experiencing life as highly meaningful. In the follow-ups, we asked
them to rate the degree to which they agreed with various statements, such as “I have a great appreciation for the
beauty of life” and other statements related to coherence, purpose, existential mattering. Our results showed that the
more people indicated that they were “appreciating life”, the more they felt their existence valuable. In the
experiment that followed, we further explored the phenomenon by asking participants to watch an awe-inspiring
video. They also reported having a greater sense of experiential appreciation and meaning in life in these moments,
compared with those watching more neutral videos.
The final results confirmed our original theory: appreciating small things can make life feel more meaningful.
But applying that insight can be difficult. Our modern, fast-paced, project-oriented (任务驱动的) lifestyles fill the
day with targets. We are on the go, attempting to make the most of our output. This makes it easy to miss what is
happening right now. Yet life happens in the present moment. We should slow down, let life surprise us and
embrace the significance in the everyday. After all, we live in a wonderful world. There is no end to the adventures
we can have if only we seek them with our eyes open.
12. Why does the author mention the admiration of a butterfly?
A. To describe a picture. B. To raise a question.C. To introduce a concept. D. To draw a conclusion.
13. What is mainly explored in the studies according to Paragraph 3?
A. The theory of experiential appreciation.
B. The analysis of the belief that matters most.
C. The importance of a long-term goal in life.
D. The life of the participants involved.
14. What makes it hard for us to appreciate the present?
A. The lack of opportunities.
B. Our modern fast-paced lifestyle.
C. Our focus on individual feelings.
D. The ignorance of future outcomes.
15. Which of the following will the author probably agree with?
A. Find the inner beauty of ourselves.
B. Explore the end of a significant life.
C. Fill every day with a great many targets.
D. Appreciate little wonders of everyday life.
【答案】12. C 13. A 14. B 15. D

It was early morning on Dec.4. Harrison Bentzen, a student at the University of Central Lancashire, had been
working on her final exam in the library and was ready to go back home for a good sleep. As she reached the bus
stop, she found her bank card was missing. She searched her bag, only to find she was out of cash. It was still dark
and rather cold. Her home was 20 miles away and it was impossible for her to walk home. Tired and cold, she had
no idea how she was going back home.
At that time, a nearby homeless old man noticed what happened to her and was concerned for her safety. He
approached Harrison with $3 in his hand, “Miss, this is all I’ve got. Take it! Get a cab!” Harrison was deeply
moved. She was deeply grateful for his kindness, but she would not accept the homeless man’s last bit of money.
Harrison declined the offer, but his act of kindness stayed in her mind and heart the following weeks, and
finally she decided to try and find him again so that she could somehow repay his kindness. While searching, she
learned that the old man’s name was Robbie and he was always kind to people around. The more people she spoke
with, the more good deeds she learned about him, such as returning wallets untouched to pedestrians.
Harrison eventually found the man and was able to thank him, and she also learned about his situation. He had
been homeless for 7 months and needed to get back on his feet but could not get work due to his old age. She
decided to help him get off the streets and into a flat.
