However, weeks after they set off, they were stranded there overnight without water, food or tents at a temperature of about -30℃.They took turns to keep each other awake in case they fell asleep and did not wake up again. Actually, that night on the mountain top was not the first time that Jackson had been close to death. Five years ago, while still a professional rugby player, Jackson broke his neck in a challenge, which nearly killed him. Jackson was told by doctors that he was likely to face life in a wheelchair. He was forced to retire from playing rugby. Luckily, Jackson managed to discard his wheelchair six months after the accident. To mark the first anniversary of his accident, Jackson set himself the goal of climbing Mount Snowdon, the highest mountain in Wales, even though he was still using two crutches then. He tried to climb many higher mountains after that. Four years later, he found himself in the Himalayas. The challenges that Jackson faced in the mountains have had a great impact on his recovery both physically and mentally. Jackson realized that others might benefit, too. So he started the charity Millimeters to Mountains (M2M) with his wife Lois and his friend Oily Barkley. It takes beneficiaries who have suffered physical or psychological injuries in challenges around the world, allowing them to access the healing power of nature. Jackson says, “I once lost hope in life because of my bad condition, thinking there was nothing I could do. But, should average summer air temperatures rise by a few degrees, some of those clear waters could turn a cloudy green or brown, the Learn reports in the Sept.28 Geophysical Research Letters. The changing colours could change how people use those waters and offer clues about the stability of lake ecosystems. Compared with blue lakes, green or brown lakes have more algae and organic matter, says Xiao Yang, a hydrologist (水文专家) at Southern Methodist University. Lakes in places with average summer air temperatures that were below 19° Celsius were more likely to be blue than lakes with warmer summers. That’s because warmer water helps algae bloom more, which changes the properties of the water. Yang and colleagues used satellite photos from 2013 to 2020 to analyze the colour of more than 85, 000 lakes around the world. Because storms and seasons can temporarily affect a lake’s colour, the researchers focused on the most frequent colour observed for each lake over the seven-year period. The researchers also created an interactive online map that can be used to explore the colours of these lakes. The approach is “ super cool, ” the researchers say. These satellite data are “ just so powerful. ” If some lakes do become less blue, people will probably lose some of the resources they have come to value, O’Reilly says, who is an ecologist at Illinois State University. Lakes are often used for drinking water, food or recreation. If the water has more algae, it could be unappealing for play or more costly to clean for drinking. But the colour changes wouldn’t necessarily mean that the lakes are any less healthy. “Humans don’t value lots of algae in a lake, but if you’re a certain type of fish species, you might be like ‘this is great,’ ” O’Reilly says. 28. What can we learn about the lakes’ colour change according to the text? A. It is caused by water pollution. B. It does harm to the growth of algae. C. It results from the temperature increase. D. It can disturb the stability of lake ecosystems. 29. How was the research conducted? A. By doing field investigation. B. By analyzing long-term satellite data. C. By researching previous studies. D. By observing the daily colour of the lakes. 30. Which word best describes O’Reilly’s attitude to the colour change? A. Objective. B. Doubtful. C. Unconcerned. D. Favourable. 31. What’s the author’s purpose in writing the text? A. To call on people to protect lakes. B. To introduce a new research method. C. To provide solutions to lakes’ colour change. D. To present the outcome of a research. D There’s a continuing controversy over whether electric vehicles should produce sounds to let the blind and other pedestrians know they’re on the scene. Some think those sounds should be standardized—like the “beep, beep, beep” of heavy machinery backing up, so you’ll think " something heavy is coming this way" when you hear it—and some think any sound will do. 学科网(北京)股份有限公司This is a serious subject. Plug-in hybrid cars (插电式混合动力车) and battery electric vehicles are super-quiet, and a study at the University of California, Riverside concludes that people listening to recordings on headphones can hear a regular gas car coming from 28 feet away, but a hybrid in battery mode only when it’s 7 feet away. In response, the European Union has put new rules into play: all new electric vehicle models must have a sound-producing device, which sounds like a traditional engine. Starting in 2021,all new electric vehicles of any model have had the Acoustic Vehicle Alerting System or AVAS. That sound comes into play when the car is traveling backwards or when it’s traveling at less than 12 miles an hour - speeds at which cars are more likely to be mixing with pedestrians. That’s a nice start, say representatives for the blind, but more is needed." We’re calling on the government to take this announcement further by requiring AVAS on all existing electric and hybrid vehicles and ensuring drivers have them switched on," John Welsman, guide dog owner and Guide Dogs staff member, said in a statement. Drivers in most eases have the ability to shut off the device when needed. My guess is that they will eventually be standardized so your mind will automatically register “electric car” when you hear it. And that’s probably a good thing to reduce the mayhem(混乱)on the roads. 32. How does the author show “electric cars are quiet” in Paragraph 2? A. By making a classification. B. By making a comparison. C. By analyzing cause and effect. D. By setting down general rules. 33. What can be learned about the AVAS? A. It was developed by the European Union. B. It was designed for inexperienced drivers. C. It consists of a sound-producing device and an engine. D. It warns pedestrians of the coming of an electric car. 34. What does John Welsman think of the new rules? A. They are too strict for drivers. B. They are too complex to follow. C. They need further improvement. D. They hardly allow for any flexibility. 35. Which of the following can be the best title of the passage? A. Problems with electric cars B. A new type of electric car on sale C. Electric cars with a standardized sound-producing device D. Quiet electric cars 第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项 为多余选项。 Ready to take a gap year?
