Worldwide, Mr. Yuan’s discoveries—together with breakthroughs in wheat cultivation by
American scientist Norman Borlaug—helped create the Green Revolution. The subsequent rise in
harvest yields as a result of the two scientists’achievements has put an end to famine throughout much
oftheworld.
It was in the 1970s that Yuan achieved his scientific breakthroughs that would later make him a
household name.At that time, the world of rice scientists was full of talk of developing hybrid strains.
While the international teams kept doing research, Mr.Yuan took the lead in developing hybrid strains

By 1978, Mr.Yuan was overseeing the initial stages of the large-scale production of hybrid rice in

Hybrid rice varieties typically produce20 to 30per centmore rice peracre than non-hybrid strains
when cultivated under the same conditions. As Mr.Yuan and his teams introduced hybrid strains across

Yuan Longping was born in 1930 in Beijing, or Beiping, as it was then called. He entered college

to a farm on a school trip, and partly from an idyllic (田园诗的) scene in Charlie Chaplin’s film
ModernTimes, in which the LittleTramp savours(品尝)grapes and fresh milk atthe doorstep of his
home.
After graduating in 1953, Mr. Yuan took a job as a teacher at an agricultural college in Hunan
province while maintaining his commitment and interest in crop genetics. His commitment to the field

Among the members of my social network, a handful bring out mixed emotions —both eagerness
and fear.Interactions with them feel like a conversational game of Russian roulette(轮盘赌). In the
right mood, these individuals candeliver a fun-filled evening, butif Icatch them at the wrong moment,
they can wipe out all my positive energy. There is simply no knowing what is to come. If this sounds
familiar,thenyoutoohavefrenemies.
Julianne Holt-Lunstad and her colleagues at BrighamYoung University have designed a scale that
identifies four categories of relationships. You can try it for yourself. Pick a couple of people within
your social network and answer the following two questions on a scale of one (not at all) to six (very
much). When you are feeling in need of advice, understanding or a favor, how helpful is your
connection?Likewise,howupsettingisyourconnection?
People who score one on both questions are your indifferent relationships — a neighbor, perhaps,
with neither good nor bad qualities. Those who score highly on the first question, while getting the
lowest possible rating on the second, are your supportive and loyal social ties. Those with the lowest
scoreonthe firstquestionandhigh marksonthesecondareaversive relationships.Finally,anyonewith
a score of two or more on both scales is considered an ambivalent connection —your frenemies. They
may be incredibly generous when you have a problem yet can also strike back with a bitter put-down
whentheyfeelenviousorthreatened.
Research suggests that ambivalent, love-hate relationships are often more stressful than
consistentlynegative ones,damagingmentalandphysicalhealth.Cuttingoffcontactmaynotalways be
possible,especiallyifthepersonisabossorfamilymember.So,whatcanbedone?
Simply being aware of the ambivalent nature of a relationship might offer some protection.

The numerous bacteria that naturally inhabit the human body seem to help us in many ways. One
group is emerging as particularly beneficial: a type of gut (肠道) bacteria known as Blautia, which has
宝鸡中学2022级高三月考三考试试题(第 6 页,共 12 页)
{#{QQABJYQAogCoAABAAQhCAwlSCkAQkgECCQgORFAEIAAAiQNABAA=}#}made headlines recently because it seems to exert some really remarkable effects. Now,a Chinese team
is glimpsing another potential benefit of Blautia: helping people adapt to high altitudes. Their findings
suggest that providing Blautia could help mountaineers and others perform better in these challenging
environments.
Qing-Peng Kong, a geneticist at the ChineseAcademy of Sciences, and his team recruited 45 men
to move from their homes at 250 meters above sea level to a town at about 3,700 meters. Despite the
thin air, the men ate similar food as they had at home, minimizing the effects of diet changes on their
gutbacteria.After2days,Blautiawentfrombeingraretoveryabundantintheirguts.
Theteam thensubjectedmicetocontrolled low-oxygen conditionsin thelab, simulating(模拟) an
altitude of 4,000 meters, while giving Blautia to half of them every other day.The Blautia-treated mice
showed milder symptoms of altitude sickness. This opens the door into whether altitude sickness might
beamenabletotreatmentthroughthegut.
The bacteria's effect may also extend to the brain. “Its superpower comes from the connection
between the gut and the brain,” says Klepac-Cerak at Wellesley College. The fatty acids it makes are
knowntoactivatereceptorsonnervesthatconnectthedigestivesystem,heartandbrain.Thiscouldhelp
explain a surprising correlation that Klepac-Cerak reported last year: Kids are more likely to talk and
laugh when they have more Blautia in their guts. “There's lots of communication happening between
our bacteria and our brain; we are just beginning to uncover what services bacteria do for us,”
Klepac-Ceraknotes.
Blautia's apparentsuperpowerssuggesttoKongitcouldserve asasupplement(补充)thatbenefits
people regardless of whether they are planning a trip to Tibet. But first, Kong says, he wants to find
out whether Blautia is a “solo” player or exerts these protective effects only as part of a larger group of
bacteria.

Girls are better at reading and writing than boys as early as fourth grade, according to a study, and

Scientistsgenerallyagreethatboysandgirlsarepsychologicallymorealikethantheyaredifferent.
But reading seems to bea(n) 41 , with growing evidence suggesting a similar 42 in writing.
The study, published in the journalAmerican Psychologist, provided further 43 to support this

To investigate how 49 levels differed between boys and girls in the U.S., the team studied
data collected over three decades in the NationalAssessment of Educational Progress. This database of
test scores on over 3 million students in the fourth, eighth, and twelfth grades 50 national and
state performances in a range of subjects, and considered such variables such as disabilities or whether
childrenwereEnglishlearners.Readingandwritingwas 51 accordingtochildren'sunderstanding

52 , girls were foundto perform significantly better in readingand writing tests by fourthgrade
when compared with boys of the same age. As children progressed to eighth and twelfth grades, girls
continued to 53 boys, but the difference was more noticeable in writing than reading. But what
caused this difference in abilities? Evidence suggests 54 problems, such as causing problems in
class or being aggressive could be linked to neurological conditions. What is known as lateralization
(偏侧化) could also play a role. Boys are believed to use one hemisphere when reading or writing,
while girls appear to use both. The data did not, however, provide evidence to argue 55 the two
gendershavingdifferentlearningstyles.
