Now it’s fall, when Europe really comes into its own as the leaves and visitor numbers start to drop. If you’re
ready for a different take on Europe this fall, we’ve got ideas.
Alentejo, Portugal
Head to the Alentejo region, Portugal’s rural heartland. Here, you can see Roman remains in its UNESCO-
protected capital évora, road trip through peaceful countryside planted with trees and olive groves, and enjoy the
wild coast. The conserved Atlantic coastline offers miles of unspoiled beaches and is popular for surfing, with the
best waves from autumn to spring.
Val Gardena, Dolomites, Italy
During fall in the Dolomite mountains of Northern Italy, the changing leaves compete with the enrosadira (朝
霞) — as the setting sun hits the mountains at just the right angle, causing them to glow pink. It’s an all-out feast
for the senses in Val Gardena, whether you’re hiking mountain trails within the UNESCO World Heritage
landscapes of Puez-Odle National Park, or tasting the local Ladin cuisine during a three-week food festival.
Thessaloniki, Greece
Greece’s second city sits on the Thermaic Gulf, opening onto the Aegean Sea. Famed for its vast culinary
offerings, it’s also mostly bypassed by tourists from the US. During October and November, venture out of the city
to take in the changing leaves along the hiking trails near Mount Olympus, 90 minutes southwest of Thessaloniki.
Baden-Baden, Germany
Baden-Baden actually has more appeal in fall, with spectacular views of the surrounding Rhine Valley and
Black Forest as the leaves start to glow with color. Autumn’s temperatures are ideal for soaking your bones after a
hike in Baden-Baden’s many hot springs like the ones at Caracalla Spa, which first opened in 1877. You can also
stop into a winery to sample the wares, as well as local specialties like onion tart.

Mia, 18, had just started working as a lifesaver at a beach in Australia on New Year’s Eve when beach-goers
started to point and shout at the water. The workers quickly examined the situation and saw that a kangaroo had
jumped out of the bushes — straight into the sea.
The animal seemed confused by the fishermen standing on the rocks. So instead of turning back and heading
back into the bushes, it jumped right into the water! The poor thing bobbed (摆动) around in the waves and went
underwater several times before Mia decided to take action.
As with any other animal rescue, it’s important to approach the situation with care. Wild animals that are
stressed can become dangerous to their rescuers, and Mia was aware of the risks as she took her rescue board and
hit the water at a run. “It just didn’t want to come on to the beach because it was kind of scared,” she said, “I was
trying to figure out how to get it on the board. But considering that it’s a wild animal, even though I was helping, I
wouldn’t want to be hurt by it or make it more stressed out.”
As beach-goers recorded the rescue on their phones, Mia paddled (用浆划船) behind the animal carefully and
guided the kangaroo onto the beach. As soon as Mia’s feet touched the sand, the beach erupted in cheers for her! “It
was quite special. As people there were cheering and clapping, the kangaroo was just sitting there up in the bushes
staring at me, as if it was conveying something with its shining eyes,” Mia said, “I didn’t think that was going to
ever be my first rescue, I may have more rescues in the future, but none would be as memorable as this one.”
4. Why did the kangaroo jump into the water?
A. To find food in the sea. B. To assist its partner in the water.
C. To pose a threat to the beach-goers. D. To escape from the fishermen on the rocks.
5. How did Mia rescue the kangaroo?

Recent studies found that smiling at London bus drivers increases happiness. However, on the Number 24 bus
to Hampstead Heath, Londoners are sceptical. “Bus drivers,” says. Liz Hands. a passenger. “are generally annoying
me.”
It might seem improbable that a report on London’s buses could change behaviour. But it has happened before.
London’s buses have an underappreciated role in the history, of medical science. In the 1940s, a single study of
London’s transport workers transformed epidemiology(流行病学), medicine and the way we live now. Every time
you go on a run, check your step-count, or take the stairs instead of the lift, you are following a path pioneered by
the feet of the workers on London’s buses.
In the late 1940s, doctors were worried. Britain was suffering from an “epidemic” of heart disease and no one
knew why. Various hypotheses(假设), such as stress, were suggested; but one thing that was not exercising
researchers was exercise. The idea that health and exercise were linked “wasn’t the accepted fact that we know
today”, says Nick Wareham, a professor of epidemiology at Cambridge University. Some even felt that “too much
physical activity was a bad thing for your health”. Navvies, miners and farmers who did physical exercise also
suffered from various diseases and died young.
At this time a young doctor called Jerry Morris started to suspect that the excess deaths from heart disease
might be linked to occupation. He began studying the medical ‘records of 31, 000 London transport workers. His
findings were breathtaking: conductors, who spent their time running up and down stairs, had an approximately
30% lower possibility of disease than drivers, who sat down all day. Exercise was keeping people alive.
Morris’s research was eventually published in 1953, just three years after a study by Richard Doll proving the

up exercise, handing his jacket to his daughter and just running. “People thought I was bananas.” Slowly, the rest of
the world took off its jacket and followed.
8. What can we learn from the first two paragraphs?
A. The former study made much difference.
B. Running was regarded as harmful behavior.
C. Smiling at drivers can cure passengers’ diseases.
D. London passengers can understand bus drivers well.
9. What does the underlined word “exercising” in Paragraph 3 probably mean?
A. Interrupting. B. Responding. C. Worrying. D. Delighting.
10. How did Morris conduct his study?
A. By carrying out surveys among numerous workers.
B. By observing the routines of drivers and conductors.
C. By analyzing the medical records of transport workers.
D. By interviewing doctors about their theories on heart disease.
11. What is the best title for the text?
A. Londoners’ Views on Bus Drivers’ Happiness
B. Smiling and Its Effects on London Bus Drivers
C. The Evolution of London’s Transportation System
.
D The Revolutionary Impact of London’s Bus Studies

A Danish company named Too Good To Go has been working to combat food waste in the United States and
around the world. In the U. S., more than a third of food produced goes uneaten, contributing to environmental
issues. Too Good To Go addresses this problem by partnering with restaurants to sell their end-of-day leftovers at
discounts, typically ranging from 60% to 80% off.
The app of the same name, which started in Denmark in 2015, has expanded to 17 countries and multiple U. S.
cities, including New York, Phoenix, and Seattle, with Los Angeles proving to be one of its most successful
markets. The company is now looking to expand its footprint in the southeast.
While the cost savings for customers and businesses are significant, the primary focus of Too Good To Go is
reducing food waste, which is a major contributor to greenhouse gas emissions. The app allows users to track their
environmental impact by displaying the electricity and carbon emissions prevented through their purchases. To
date, the app claims to have saved over 250 million meals, making a substantial impact.
第6页/共12页
学科网(北京)股份有限公司Food waste contributes to climate change in several ways, including the emission of methane gas from rotting
food in landfills, the resources used to grow the food, and the energy expended in food transportation and
preparation. Too Good To Go estimates that its efforts are equal to taking about 135, 000 cars off the road for a
year, and it plays a crucial role in addressing the approximately 6% of total greenhouse gas emissions caused by
food loss and waste in the U. S.
Alexandria Coari, the vice president of food waste nonprofit ReFED, recognizes the potential of apps like Too
Good To Go. She believes that they have the capacity to reduce the carbon emissions equal to 870, 000 cars in a
year, positioning them as one of the top 10 solutions to combating food waste and climate change.
While the app has been successful in the restaurant industry, its expansion into grocery stores and
manufacturing is still a work in progress.
12. What do we know about the app Too Good To Go?
A. It primarily operates in Los Angeles.
B. It has saved over 250 million dollars so far.
C. It focuses on fighting against food waste.
D. It helps sell fresh groceries at full price.
13. Why are the numbers mentioned in Paragraph 4?
A. To show the environmental impact of the app.
B. To highlight the cost savings for customers.
C. To emphasize the company’s expansion plans.
D. To illustrate the app’s success in reducing resources.
14. What is Alexandria Coari’s attitude to the Too Good To Go’s future?
A. Skeptical B. Negative. C. Neutral. D. Supportive.
15. What may be talked about following the text?
A. The history of food waste reduction efforts.
B. Challenges Too Good To Go’s expansion faces.
C. The impact of climate change on the food industry.
D. Strategies for reducing food waste in grocery stores.

In recent years, as science has evolved, it has become clear that depression is not just a chemical imbalance. It’s
much more complex, and increasingly, a body of evidence points to the importance of habits and behaviors to prevent
symptoms of depression. ___16___
第7页/共12页
学科网(北京)股份有限公司Rest is powerful. Sleeping seven to nine hours per night, on average, reduced the risk of depression by about
22% in the study. Not only does sleep help us remember what we’ve learned during the day, but research shows it
plays a key role in keeping our immune systems strong. ___17___ And though dreaming is still a bit of a mystery,
the idea that dreams may help us regulate our emotions goes back decades.
Exercise is a cure. A recent meta-analysis found that physical activity was more effective than medications in
reducing symptoms of depression. Though antidepressant (抗抑郁的) medicines tend to be faster in treating an
episode of depression, physical exercise has more durable effects than an antidepressant does. For some people,
medication gives them a benefit in the beginning, but then it fades over time. ___18___
___19___ Scientists found that people who maintained a healthy pattern of eating were less likely to have an
episode of depression. Multiple studies show that a plant-forward approach full of greens, vegetables, berries, whole
grains, lean protein s including beans and healthy fats including nuts can help reduce the risk of disease.
Reducing sedentary (久坐不动的) time is a must. While enjoying your favorite streaming shows can be fun,
making it a daily habit likely means you’re spending too much time sitting on the couch without interacting with
people or being active. Extended periods of inactivity independently increase the risk of depression. ___20___ So,
even if you jog or bike for 30 minutes daily but spend most of the day in front of a screen, it can harm your mental
health.
A. Good eating habit is a necessity.
B. Inadequate nutrition is a risky choice.
C. The risk is present regardless of how much exercise you do.
D. Following these habits can cut the risk of depression by 57%.
.
E Sleep is not a passive process but an incredibly active process.
F. For instance, a well-rested person is better at resisting the common cold.
G. However, a lifestyle change can have a more permanent and lasting effect.

In middle school, my family moved to New York, where my parents established a small grocery store beneath
our new home. As a reserved girl adjusting to the complex city life, I faced the challenge of fitting in. One day, my
school announced a talent show for the local food bank, sparking excitement and anticipation. Despite my self-
doubt, a popular classmate, Lily, approached me with an unexpected proposal.
Lily, known for her charming personality, suggested we collaborate(合作) on a singing performance for the
talent show. Surprised and thrilled, I couldn’t believe someone with her status acknowledged my modest singing
talent. With Lily’s beautiful voice, it felt like a bit of good fortune. Encouraged by Lily’s enthusiasm, we decided to
embark on this musical journey together.
As we started preparing for the talent show, we faced numerous challenges, from selecting the right song to
coordinating(协调) our harmonies. The process became a bonding experience and I began to embrace the idea of
sharing my talent with the public. Lily’s infectious energy and encouragement helped me overcome my shyness.
Days turned into weeks, and our rehearsal sessions became a regular after-school routine. Lily and I poured
our hearts into perfecting our act, drawing inspiration from various musical genres(音乐流派). However, fate took
an unexpected turn the day before the performance. Lily fell ill with a sudden fever, leaving me in a state of panic.
Worried about Lily’s sudden illness, I felt a mix of fear and determination. With the talent show only a day
away, we had to come up with a plan quickly. In the midst of my concern, Lily, despite her weakened state,
reassured me and insisted that the show must go on. Drawing strength from Lily’s determination, I took on the
responsibility of carrying our performance. The night before the talent show, I practiced tirelessly, determined to do
justice to our hard work.
