If you lack time to exercise during the working week, don’t worry. A study of nearly 90,000 participants in the
UK suggests that putting all your weekly exercise on weekends still has significant health benefits compared with
being inactive. In this study, participants who cram all their recommended weekly physical activity into one or two
days are referred to as “weekend warriors”.
The researchers collected data from 89,573 volunteers by requiring them to wear a wrist device to track their
weekly physical activity. These participants were then divided into three groups based on their exercise patterns:
regular exercisers, who spread their exercise throughout the week; weekend warriors, who did most of their exercise in
one day or two; and inactive participants. After grouping the participants, the researchers compared their health
records to examine the related health benefits.
The study found that, compared with those who were inactive, weekend warriors and regular exercisers
experienced similar health benefits, with both groups having a lower risk of developing more than 200 diseases.
Specifically, the strongest effects were for cardio metabolic diseases. Both groups had a 20% lower risk of high blood
pressure and a 40% lower risk of diabetes.
Dr. Shaan Khurshid, a cardiologist at Massachusetts general hospital in Boston, who led the study, said, “It
shows that, for health benefits, it’s really the amount of physical activity rather than its frequency that matters. The
key is, however, you are going to get that amount, do it in the way that works for you.
Khurshid also mentioned the need for more research to explore whether the “weekend warrior” workout pattern
could help people reach their activity goals more easily. “It might be more convenient for some people and help them
follow public health advice better,” he said.
28.According to the study, weekend warriors refer to those who ______
A.stay inactive during the whole week.
B.avoid any physical activity during the weekends.
C.exercise moderately every day during the whole week.
D.pack the recommended physical activity into the weekend.
29.How did the researchers test the health benefits in the three groups?A.By checking their physical health. B.By comparing their health records.
C.By reviewing their exercise records. D.By examining their workout patterns.
30.According to Dr. Khurshid, what is more important for health benefits?
A.How often you exercise each week. B.How long you exercise each time.
C.How much exercise you do each week. D.How much effort you put into exercise.
31.What can we infer about the “weekend warrior” workout pattern?
A.It follows public health advice. B.It might suit people with busy schedules.
C.It could help people reach their workout goals. D.It will soon be promoted as the best exercise plan.

Every year, the release of new phones brings consumers to the market looking to upgrade their phones to the
next best thing. However, the problem of electronic waste, or e-waste, isn’t so well-known despite the threat it poses to
the environment. E-waste is the term used for electronics that have been thrown away. Although buying the latest
device may initially be a good decision, in the long run, the constant purchase of electronics will affect the health of
our planet.
E-waste is common in the U. S., as landfills (垃圾填埋场) are filled with old electronics. According to an EPA
report, materials in these landfills account for 70 percent of dangerous materials. In the commercial district
Agbogbloshie, Ghana, most electronic waste is burned or thrown in acid, seriously damaging the environment with
poisonous emissions in the air.
At the individual level, there are solutions that help reduce the amount of e-waste. The next time something goes
wrong with your smart phone or you think your phone is too old, consider checkıng if it can be overhauled instead of
buying a new one. Additionally, before throwing away your old device, donate it to schools, charities or non-profit
organizations that can find a use for the product.
Teaching students about e-waste in schools is a way for the community to bring greater attention to the issue. E-
waste relates to many different careers, and the future generation can learn early about the harm of e-waste and how
it should be regarded in each field. There are also many resources online, including lesson plans, for teachers to use
when they educate students about the topic.
As the effects of climate change grow more and more serious, it’s our responsibility to help the planet and
prevent issues such as e-waste. As the 5G revolution begins, it’s important to remember to recycle old smart phones
and understand that a difference can be made at the individual level.
32.What is the author’s main concern in the text?
A.New technology is hard to apply. B.The problem of e-waste is ignored.
C.People refuse to upgrade their phones. D.Few people care about the environment.
33.Why does the author mention Ghana in Paragraph 2?
A.To warn of harmful emissions. B.To explain the waste of resources.
C.To show the seriousness of e-waste. D.To show the wide use of landfills.
34.What does the underlined word “overhauled” in Paragraph 3 probably mean?
A.Restored. B.Replaced. C.Cleaned. D.Suspended
35.What does Paragraph 4 mainly focus on?
A.The prospects of future e-waste. B.The responsibility of communities.C.Online resources on reducing e-waste D.The education of students about e-waste.

How to express hurt feelings
Expressing hurt feelings can be challengıng, especially for teenagers. 36 Luckily, there are some simple
techniques on how to effectively express your hurt feelings.
37 Before you approach someone to tell them that they’ve hurt your feelings, identify exactly why you
feel hurt. It’s important to give a specific reason for your hurt feelings so that you can express this to the person who
hurt you. If you’re unsure about why you feel hurt, review what happened in your mind or write about it.
Take a few deep breaths and try to relax. If you’re feeling overwhelmed by your emotions, take a few deep
breaths in and out before speaking with the persons. 38 You may also find it hard to communicate what
you’re feeling if you are overcome with emotions. If taking deep breaths doesn’t seem to help, try takıng a brisk walk
or doing push-ups. This will help to release endorphins (内啡肽) and clear your head.
Use “I” statements to communicate what you’re feeling. 39 Instead, express your feelings by using “I” rather
than “you”. Explain the issue in an objective way. This will be less likely to put the person on the defensive. For
example, you might say, “I felt hurt that I didn’t get a call to tell me you couldn’t make it yesterday.”
Listen carefully to the other person’s response. After you’ve expressed your hurt feelings, give the other person a
chance to respond. Listen to what they have to say with your full attention. They might not have realized they hurt
you, or they may have a different view on the situation. 40
A.Be specific in your description.
B.Think about what you’re feeling and why.
C.Avoid blaming the person for how you feel.
D.You can express your feelings in a more reasonable way.
E.Having an open dialogue can lead to a better understanding and resolution.
F.However, it’s important to communicate to maintain your emotional well-being.
G.Talking to them when you’re feeling angry, stressed, or tearful can make matters worse.

“OK, everybody. It’s that time of year,” said my science teacher, Mr. Beal. “This Friday we’ll have the annual
Egg Drop Challenge. Bring your best containers to class. You can work alone or work together.”
Mr. Beal’s fifth-grade Egg Drop Challenge was an institution at my school. The goal of the Challenge was
simple—you had to build a protective container to keep an egg from breaking when dropped over the stadium wall.
My best friend, Cassie, and I grinned at each other. We always worked on projects together. She’s brainy; I’m
creative. We ‘re the perfect combination, like peanut butter and marshmallow cream (棉花糖霜),which happens to
be my favorite kind of sandwich.
I made my favorite sandwich that afternoon while waiting for Cassie to come over and work on the container.
Spreading the fluffy marshmallow cream gave me an idea.
“I have a brilliant design for our egg container!” I said when Cassie arrived. She looked at me eagerly. “We can
cushion it with some marshmallow cream. You know, to absorb the shock of the impact,” I explained. “You’ve got to
be kidding, Laura.” Cassie exclaimed. “You have a better idea?” Cassie pointed to a sketch (草图) in her notebook.
“Actually, I do. We put the egg in a basket with parachute (降落伞) attached. It will simply float to safety.” “It’s too
easy for something to go wrong. It will never work!” I said. Cassie rolled her eyes, “The parachute is better than that
stupid idea.”
I couldn’t believe it. Of course we’d had our little fights in the past, but this was different. She’d never called
any of my ideas “stupid” before. “Then I’ll build mine and you build yours, and we’ll just see whose is better.”
“Fine!” Cassie threw her notebook into her backpack and stormed out. And just like that, our friendship was broken.
Like an egg dropped from the top of a stadium without marshmallow cream to protect it.
Paragraph 1: When Friday finally came, I had to admit that Cassie’s Egg Force One looked pretty good.
Paragraph 2: By the fourth round, only Cassie and I were left.

When English Meets The Arts
Among the “When English Meets The Arts” activities, the English Drama Festival impressed me most. Students
performed classic plays like “Romeo and Juliet”. Dressed in beautiful costumes, they vividly presented the stories,
showing great language capability as well as excellent performance skills.
This activity was a feast for both eyes and ears, which not only improved our English but also deepened our
understanding of Western culture. By blending English and the arts, the English Drama Festival not only showcased
the creativity and talents of our students, but also fostered a deeper understanding and appreciation of both languages
and arts.

Also, it enhanced our interest in English and made us more confident in using it.

When Friday finally rolled around. I had to admit that Cassie’s Egg Force One looked pretty good. She had
used a handkerchief to create a small parachute. It was tied to a basket that held soft packing peanuts and, in the
center of it all, her egg. Cassie cast a queer look at me as if to declare war. The competition was on. My classmates
carried their egg containers up three stadium steps and dropped them over the side wall. One by one. The egg broke,
the owner out. Sighs and yells echoed. Soon the side walk was already dotted with egg shells from failed drops.
By the fourth launch, only Cassie and I were left. Taking a deep breath, I let go of my box. Then I raced down
and got to the bottom before Cassie did. When I saw yolk and egg white seeping from the container, my heart sank.
Then I saw Cassie’s basket lying beside mine, empty. “My egg bounced out,” she explained, pointing to a broken
shell in the grass. “I guess the pilot had an egg-jector seat,” I offered. Cassie looked at me, and her glare softened. I
grinned. She giggled. “A tie,” Mr. Beal announced. But we knew we’d won something more important than the Egg
Drop Challenge.
读后续写高分作文1:When Friday finally rolled around, I had to admit that Cassie’s Egg Force One looked pretty good. Her plastic
basket with parachute was elaborately designed. When thrown into the air, it opened its parachute, whirled, around
like a butterfly and then landed on the ground slowly and quietly, demonstrating that there wasn’t any crack on the
egg. The audience let out thundering cheers, some even whistling wildly. With a triumphant air, Cassie received
myriads of thumbs-up and cast me a proud look. The minute I let go of my egg, I stumbled down stairs in a hurry,
in a desperate attempt to check it. My heart beat wildly as I found the egg safe and sound. Then the next few minutes
witnessed fierce competition between other groups.
By the fourth launch, only Cassie and I were left. I cast a side glance at her. She was holding her container
tightly, no longer looking that confident. So did I. “Drop!” Hands trembling, I let go of the container, stretching out
to keep them in sight, and rushed down to check. However, under the lid was an egg that was badly cracked! I stood
still. I heard Cassie sobbing. She must have failed too. Yet, her failure didn’t comfort me. Instead, it left me in thought.
My marshmallow cream leaked just now, while her parachute didn’t function due to the sudden wind. What if we
combined our ideas? If only we hadn’t broken up! I looked towards Cassie and our eyes met. We giggled. I knew our
friendship was back.

When Friday finally rolled around, I had to admit that Cassie’s Egg Force One looked pretty good. Equipped
with a small parachute, it stood out from various protective containers. There was obvious confidence written on
Cassie’s face. Soon, the Egg Drop Challenge began. Cassie let go of her Egg Force One and it landed perfectly. When
it came to my turn, I felt butterflies in my stomach and my eyes followed all the way my Egg Cushion dropped. I was
wild with joy as I saw my egg safe in the marshmallow. The game continued. The next two rounds witnessed many
broken egg shells.
By the fourth launch, only Cassie and I were left. I could feel that all the eyes were fixed on us. A strong sense
of nervousness surged through me. Next to me, Cassie was also under great pressure. Then we saw our eggs drop.
Suddenly. I heard a clear crack sound. My heart sank. I slowly bent down to check but found no cracks at all. I turned
around and found Cassie’s basket was broken. Mr. Beal announced the winner of this year’s Egg Drop Challenge and
I heard my name. I cast a big beam and found Cassie run away with tears running on her checks. I found her curled
up in the corner. Huddling her into my arms, I patted her on the back and murmured to her how sorry I was. That
day, I not only won the challenge but also the most precious friendship back.
