Four Best Places to Camp around the World
There are few more rewarding feelings than putting up your tent and spending the night beneath the stars. From
New Zealand to Finland, this is our pick of four best places to camp around the globe.
Mount Cook National Park, New Zealand
You can’t talk about the best places to camp without mentioning New Zealand’s otherworldly landscapes. Aoraki
(or Mount Cook) is the country’s highest mountain, and the surrounding rocky region is the South Island’s finest
outdoor playground. Views from the campgrounds here are simply amazing.
Devon, England
The southwest of England feels a million miles from the rest of the UK. The campsites on Dartmoor and Exmoor
are fantastic places to build a tent. However, you’ll also find spots with unbeatable views along the rocky cliffs that
sweep down to the Atlantic on the north Devon coast. Come in autumn, when you can watch a huge red sunset slowly
over the horizon.
The Alps, France
As a ski resort in the winter months, the Alps transform as the snow melts. Once the moderate spring weather
arrives, so do hikers and campers. You’ll find beautifully fresh alpine air and old villages nestled in the foothills. It’s
one of the best places to camp, made all the more special by the starry night sky above.
Hossa National Park, Finland
Finland’s newest national park (which opened in 2017) is in the wild northeast of the country. You’ll find here
a rugged landscape of rivers, lakes and forests. Finland welcomes wild campers and the park is dotted with remote
shelters and plain cabins, all with spots for campfires.
1. What do Mount Cook National Park and Devon have in common?
A. Near the coast. B. Ski resorts in winter
C. Fantastic views around campsites. D. The time to visit.
2. Which place will be chosen for accommodation if you don’t take a tent?
A. Mount Cook National Park. B. Devon.
C. The Alps. D. Hossa National Park.
3. Where is the text most probably taken from?
A. A reflection in a travel journal. B. A guidebook to camping.
.
C An essay about tourism. D. An introduction to travelingB
Marco Polo came from a family of merchants. His father Niccolo and uncle Maffeo already left Venice in 1261
,
to establish new relationships in the East where they met Kublai Khan during this first journey.
Their meeting was one of the greatest encounters between East and West in history The brothers found in the
Khan a man whose curiosity about the West matched theirs about the East. The relationship they built with the
Mongols made them pioneering intermediaries (中间人), through whom knowledge of Europe and China could travel
in both directions.
After returning to Venice, the brothers planned another journey to the court of Kublai Khan. This time, they
would bring Niccolo’s son, Marco, who was a boy when his father last saw him ten years before, was now 17 years
old. After three and a half years of travelling through Central Asia, the Polos eventually reached their royal destination.
Marco, then aged 21, became one of the few to be received by Kublai Khan at his summer palace. During their 17
years of stay in China, Marco was sent on many journeys around the country and its neighboring lands. When the
time came to return to Europe, the Polos’ sea voyage home was another journey, taking them through the South China
Sea, Vietnam, Malaysia, Sumatra and Sri Lanka.
Marco’s account of his journey — called The Travels of Marco Polo — became a best-seller partly because of
its new insights into a distant part of the world. While travelers’ tales from the ancient Silk Road had been distributed
before, the wealth of information Marco provided on China and its surrounding lands was unparalleled at the time.
Not only did it offer readers strange and fantastic details about faraway places, but the work also presented practical
information of use to merchants who were interested in international trade.
Marco’s eagerness to record the goods being produced and how they could be transported caught the mood of
the times. Information from The Travels was useful in improving maps of East Asia, which fed trade relations. This
knowledge fueled a growing curiosity about the world as Europe moved into the Renaissance and the Age of Discovery
toward the end of the 1400s. Better navigation enabled eastward as well as westward trade in that period of
exploration.
4. What is the significance of Niccolo and Mafeo’s encounter with Kublai Khan
A. Establishing a new industry B. Facilitating trade between them
C. Creating a new travel route D. Promoting mutual understanding
5. What is paragraph 3 mainly about?
A. The passion for Marco’s travel. B. The inspiration for Marco’s writing
C. The explanation of Marco’s travel. D. The insight into Marco’s writing.
6. Which factor leads to the widespread popularity of The Travels?
A. Its multiple languages use. B. The first travel journal about China in the west.C. Previously unknown information about the East. D. Adventurous tales from the ancient Silk Road.
7. What can we learn from the last two paragraphs?
A. The invention of navigational aid was encouraged.
B. European knowledge about East Asia was shaped.
C. Further exploration westward was inspired in the East.
D. The Travels was a result of the Age of Discovery
C
Armed conflicts are known to impact humans significantly, but their effects on animals have often been
underestimated. A recent study in Current Biology emphasized that the migration and reproduction of the endangered
Greater Spotted Eagle may have been influenced by the Ukraine crisis.
The Greater Spotted Eagle is listed as endangered on the International Union for Conservation of Nature’s red
list. They migrate through Ukraine between wintering areas in southern Europe and East Africa and key breeding
grounds in southern Belarus in spring. The research team studied 19 migrating GPS-tagged Greater Spotted Eagles
in March and April of 2022. The flight altitude during this period was relatively low, about 350 meters, exposing
them to regions of intense human conflicts.
Their data suggested that increased military activity like jets, tanks and other weapons could disturb the eagles.
When exposed to such events, the eagles might change their flight path to escape. The researchers found that while
migrating through Ukraine, the eagles deviated 10 percent more from the previous route compared to the past few
years, which resulted in longer migration distances.
Also, the birds made about 60 percent fewer stops during the migration. Human conflicts can affect the eagle’s
decisions about when to take breaks during their journey, leading them to choose to keep moving even when they
might need to rest. More notably, the eagles, which breed relatively slowly, face disturbance that impacts chick care
and breeding success. “Armed conflicts can have wide-ranging influence on the environment, including changes in
animal behavior,” said Charlie Russell, a researcher from the University of East Anglia, UK, in a statement to the
journal Cell.
Russel stated that animals have long been harmed by human armed conflicts and military activities. For example,
during the Sudanese Civil War between 1983 and 2005 South Sudan’s elephant population fell from 100,000 to
5,000.
A large number of animal protection organizations have carried out disaster relief work to rescue, feed, treat and
support animals during conflicts. However, very few have the resources to tackle the root problems. International
humanitarian law lacks clear rules to relieve animal suffering in armed conflicts.
8. How did armed conflicts affect Greater Spotted Eagle?A. By changing their behaviors. B. By destroying their living environment.
C. By breaking their eating habits. D. By hurting their bodies with weapons.
9. What does the underlined word “deviated” in the third paragraph mean?
A. Sought for. B. Set out. C. Sped up. D. Kept away.
10. What can people do to protect the animals in the future?
A. Raise public awareness. B. Gain financial support.
C. Improve relevant laws. D. Use new technology.
11. Which of the following is the best title for the text?
A. Animals caught up in wars B. Cares provided to animals
C. Conflicts brought by animals D. Measures taken about animal crisis
D
The artificial intelligence (AI) industry is projected to reach a value of $407 billion by 2027. However, its rapid
development raises ethical concerns, particularly regarding the treatment of data labelers. Without these workers,
products like ChatGPT wouldn’t exist.
Data labelers play a key role in helping AI systems “learn”. As the name suggests, data labeling involves
assigning labels to raw data-such as images, videos or text-so that Al systems can recognize patterns and make
predictions. For example, autonomous vehicles depend on labeled videos to differentiate between pedestrians and
road signs, while large language models like ChatGPT require labeled text to interpret human language.
Despite their essential role, labelers are often exploited. AI models can cost tens of millions of dollars to develop,
so tech giants like Google and Microsoft outsource much of the data labeling work to factories in developing countries
where workers are paid unfairly low wages. For instance, data labelers in Venezuela typically earn between $0.90 to
$2 per hour whereas their counterparts in the US earn $10 to $25 per hour. Some companies even employ children
for this task. The working conditions are also poor. Many data labelers are crowded into dusty, unsafe rooms that
pose health risks. Moreover, they often lack basic social protections such as healthcare.
Data labeling can also be mentally exhausting due to repetitive tasks, tight deadlines and strict quality controls.
Workers are sometimes required to read and label hate speech or other abusive content which can harm their mental
health. Additionally, labelers often have no access to performance data and are unable to defend themselves in the
event of wage cuts or job losses.
These issues have become so serious that in May nearly 100 data labelers and AI workers in Kenya published
an open letter to US President Joe Biden, declaring that “our working conditions amount to modern-day slavery”.
The urgent need for more ethical Al supply chains is clear. Companies must implement fair wage policies that
reflect the value of labelers’ contributions. Governments should introduce regulations promoting fairness andtransparency in performance evaluations and data processing. As Al users, we can all advocate for ethical practices
by supporting companies that are frank about their supply chains and treat their workers fairly.
12. What is the key role of data labelers in AI industry?
A. They analyse data to train AI systems. B. They program AI models for language tasks.
C. They assist AI system to identify patterns. D. They recognize patterns and make predictions.
13. Which is a challenge data labelers may face?
A. Leakages of personal information. B. Lack of professional training
C. Limited access to information D. A threat to psychological health
14. Why did data labelers in Kenya publish an open letter to US President Joe Biden?
A. To complain about hate speech. B. To require better working conditions
C. To defend their rights as citizens D. To declare their wages cuts and job loss
15. What is the purpose of this text?
A. To introduce the basic tasks data labelers do
B. To advocate bettering the welfare of data labelers
C. To reveal how data labelers relieve their work pressure.
D. To interpret the importance data labelers attach to AI industry.

项。
I am somewhat a hard-working woman and don’t like to fail a test. ___16___ I became horrible when a friend and I
took an online personality test to determine levels of optimism and I’m sadder than Eeyore, a pessimistic cartoon
figure!
,
I had assumed that as an optimist like Pooh, another cartoon figure, I saw the best in people, happier than
pessimists. There was no reason to suggest this was true, but so deeply did I believe it that I felt ashamed of my test. I
tried to justify the result to my friend: it was a bad week; the weather was depressing. ___17___ However, my poor
self kept me explaining until my friend put me out of my pain. Pessimism and optimism are just a state of being and
we can move between the two.
Apparently, there are three things to think about here. First, how personally do you take things? If a friend is in
a bad mood, do you suppose it is to do with you, or that they’re just a bit upset that day? ___18___ Second, how
common is a feeling for you? If something goes wrong, do you see it as a single incident, or a sign that more bad luck
will follow? Eeyore see a missed morning alarm as a dark sign for the entire day. Finally, how permanent do you
think a situation is? Poohs believe in the saying, “This too shall pass.” ___19___I started to see how my current view of the world was making me a pessimist. I know I can take things personally
but, when I took the test, I was burnt out at work and feeling like I was letting everyone down. So, how to change? I
started small when I was feeling unhappy in a situation, I’d ask myself, “___20___” I repeated the saying and chose
to believe in hope, because that’s what optimists do.
A. It is of great interest.
B. How would a Pooh see this?
C. I admitted I was a realist not a pessimist.
D. Thus, you can imagine my anxiety over it.
E. What would Eeyore think of this situation?
F. But Eeyore believe a bad situation will stay the way forever.
G. Optimists favor the latter and know they’re not responsible for everything all around

My sister, Angie, locked herself in the tree house Dad made for her. I jumped, grabbed the lowest branch of
the maple tree, and pulled myself up. “Here I go again,” I thought “Be careful, Matt,” Mom said from the base of
the tree. “Don’t fall.” I reached for the next branch. It wasn’t a hard climb if Angie hadn’t pulled the ladder into the
tree house.
I beat on the door and asked her to open up. Angie refused. Sometimes I wondered why I bothered. I crawled
through the window opening Dad had cut in the wall. Angie sat in one corner. “Mom says you’ve been here long
enough. You have to come down.” I said. Angie shook her head, saying she was living in this tree forever and never
going to school again. I asked her what happened at school. Angie’s eyes were filled with tears, and she covered her
face with her hands. “I told a kid at school we were getting a new baby brother. He asked, ‘What color? Green?’” I
laughed. That was actually funny.
“This is serious!” Angie cried. “He said the baby won’t really be my brother, the same way you aren’t. He said
our family isn’t a real family. We’re like a circus. All different colors-black and yellow and white.”
“Well, he’s wrong,” I said. “We’re a real family. You and I and the baby are adopted. So what?” Angie looked
up, still believing that kid at school more than she believed me. I could tell. I sat down opposite her on the tree-
house floor, a floor full of knotholes (节孔) and gaps. I began to convince her by laying out the facts. “Who taught
you to ride a bike, to skate, and to e-mail Grandma?” After a long pause, Angie finally admitted that it was I. “Yes,
I did all that because I’m your brother. It’s what brothers do.” I added.
注意:(1) 续写词数应为150个左右;
(2) 请按如下格式在答题纸的相应位置作答。
