From the tropical paradise of United States’ Miami to South China’s innovative city Shenzhen, The Lonely
Planet released a list of top 10 cities which are worth visiting in 2023. It covers a mix of well-known and less-
known destinations. Those places include second place Shenzhen, China; Novi Sad, Serbia in third place; Miami,
Florida in fourth place, and Kathmandu, Nepal rounding out the top five. Let’s have a brief look at some of these
attractive places.
Copenhagen, Denmark
With its modern design, 15 Michellin-starred restaurants and highly bike-friendly culture, it is not surprising
that Denmark’s capital has topped The Lonely Planet’s top 10 cities list.
Copenhagen’s street food scene is developing fast in Refshaleon, a former industrial area with a food and craft
market, Reffen.
Novi Sad Serbia
While Novi Sad is not as noted as the capital of Belgrade, it’s much more fashionable. It’s home to the
country’s annual EXIT! Festival, which is held each July at the 18th century-era Petrovaradin Fortress.
The festival contributes to a vibrant music and arts scene and a youthful atmosphere. 2023 European Youth
Capital was held in Novi Sad. It may be a practice run for 2024, when the city will observe the important title of
European Capital of Culture.
Kathmandu, Nepal
Three years after it was struck by a destructive earthquake, Kathmandu is welcoming visitors to a city which is
much quieter, by design.
With cars banned from the historic center and motor horns banned across the Kathmandu Valley, it’s much
quieter than it used to be in the past.
21. In which city can you enjoy riding bikes?
A. Shenzhen, China. B. Kathmandu, Nepal.
C. Novi Sad, Serbia. D. Copenhagen, Denmark.
22. In Novi Sad, Serbia you can ______.
A. experience a quieter life style
B. visit the food and craft market, Reffen
C. try delicious food in Michellin-starred restaurant
D. appreciate energetic music and art with the young people
23. Where does the passage most probably come from?

Still Miles to Go
My husband Tom came with a huge grin on his face. He held his arms wide and announced his retirement after
working for the Postal Service for thirty-three years. But as time went by, I could tell that Tom had nothing to do at
home. He began to pace like a lion, glancing out the windows.
“I think I’ll look for a part-time job,” Tom informed me one day. I felt instant relief. The lion would cease
circling, and I could be in peace. We kept our eyes open for job opportunities. A few days later, when our car crept
behind a school bus, I remarked “You could drive that bus.” He had driven us over the mountains through
rainstorms on winding roads. Behind the wheel, he seemed fearless. “Of course, I could drive that bus,” he
answered back. “But could I drive it with forty-five children bouncing and yelling in the back?” We both laughed
at the thought.
That bus became the bumblebee (大黄蜂) that buzzed around me. I pictured Tom happily going off
to work again, climbing behind the wheel and setting off on his daily route. My enthusiasm must have
attracted Tom because I overheard him on the phone with the transportation department. He was hired.
The very next morning, he was given a bus and a route sheet. Driving the bus turned out rewarding, and Tom
is blooming in his new role. I think he likes being the “big guy” on the road.
He is now “Mr. Tom” to his riders and their parents. I hear he is quite amazing. When the pre-K children
climb aboard, he fastens the safety belt for them. He greets the children with high-fives. Then he leads them in a
quick and fun activity, where they get to shout after hours spent in their quiet classroom. “Goodbye, teachers!”
yells Mr. Tom. The little ones repeat it. “Goodbye, school!” Again, they repeat, joyfully. Mr. Tom then yells out the
last two lines, and the children laugh and repeat at the top of their lungs.
He has been driving the bus for seven years and has gotten lots of thank-notes from grateful parents.
Sometimes, while a school bus passes me, it always warms my heart when the driver is the one I’m hoping to see
and I catch the kiss he blows me.
24. Why did Tom decide to look for a part-time job after retirement?
A. He was bored at home. B. He missed interacting with people.
C. He needed extra money. D. His wife wanted peace in the house.
25. What was Tom’s initial reaction when his wife suggested he drive a school bus?
A. He thought it was a silly idea.
B. He was excited to accept the job.
C. He was unsure if he could handle the disorderly children.
D. He didn’t think he was qualified for the job.
26. What does the author appreciate most about Tom’s new job?
A. It keeps him occupied.
B. He has found a sense of achievement in his work.
C. He can interact with children.
D. He overcomes his fear.27. What qualities does Tom demonstrate as a bus driver?
A. Sensitivity, flexibility and humor.
B. Carefulness, discipline and authority.
C. Enthusiasm, leadership and courage.
D. Patience, kindness and responsibility.

Summer sea ice in the Arctic could melt almost completely by the 2030s — roughly a decade earlier than
projected — even if humans cut back drastically on greenhouse gas emissions, new research suggests.
An ice-free summer, also called a “blue ocean event”, will happen when the sea ice drops below one million
square kilometers, writes Jonathan Bamber, a professor of physical geography at the University of Bristol, in the
Conversation.
Previous assessments using models have estimated an ice-free summer under high and intermediate emissions
scenarios by 2050. But researchers noticed differences between what climate models predicted about what would
happen to sea ice and what they’ve actually seen through observations. “The models, on average, underestimate sea
ice decline compared with observations,” says Nathan Gillett, an Environment and Climate Change Canada
scientist.
Now, in a new study published in Nature Communications, Gillett and his teammates changed these models to
more closely fit satellite data collected over the past 40 years. Using these adapted models, the researchers
projected ice changes under different possible levels of greenhouse gas emissions. Their paper suggests that
regardless of the emissions scenario, “we may experience an unprecedented ice-free Arctic climate in the next
decade or two.”
While sea ice naturally decreases in the summer and refreezes during the winter, summer ice coverage has
steadily been declining over the past few decades because of climate change. And Arctic ice melting happens faster
itself — as ice disappears, it exposes more of the dark blue ocean, which absorbs more heat and leads to more
melting. This process has led to the region warming nearly four times faster than the rest of the globe since 1979.
Sea ice decline could have disastrous consequences that extend to the rest of the planet, including sea level rise
and disturbance to weather patterns and ecosystems. Animals like polar bears and seals that rely on Arctic ice to
survive could be placed at risk.
28. According to the new research, what will happen concerning summer sea ice in the Arctic?
A. Its melting can be prevented in greenhouse gas emissions.
B. Its complete melting may occur earlier than expected.
C. Its vanishing once and for all will be in less than 10 years.
D. Its dropping will give rise to so-called “blue ocean event”.
29. What effort did the researchers make after figuring out the problem of the previous assessments?
A. They adapted the models to be consistent with the actual cases.
B. They collected satellite data over the past 40 years.
C. They abandoned the attempt to use models.
D. They predicted accurately ice changes in regions of the Arctic.30. How is paragraph 5 developed?
A. By listing statistics. B. By giving definitions.
C. By making a comparison. D. By analyzing cause and effect.
31. What message may the text be trying to convey to readers?
A. Pride comes before a fall. B. Man proposes, god disposes.
C. If the lips are gone, the teeth will be cold. D. A good beginning is half done.
D
If you’re out for a run, what difference does it make if you’re able to tough it out for another 50 seconds? If
you’re less than a minute from the top of the hill, that extra time can make the difference between having reached
your goal and snatching defeat from the jaws of victory.
How do you get those extra seconds of energy? A research team at the Texes Tech University developed a
study to measure what effect listening to music would have on exercise tolerance. The researchers based the study
on a stress testing. As part of the testing, they noted any changes in heart rate and blood pressure as participants
underwent physically stressful exercise.
The tests were done on treadmills (跑步机), which increased in both speed and incline (坡度)
through three stages. In the final stage, the treadmills moved at 10 miles per hour at a 14-percent grade.
Most of these tests were designed to last up to 40 minutes. The average gym-goers lasted 30 minutes.
For this study, they divided 127 participants into two groups. One listened to upbeat (快节奏) music,
while the other group had earbuds in but did not listen to music.
The group that listened to music was able to outlast the non-music group by an average of 50.6 seconds.
Again, being able to go an extra minute may seem like a no-brainer, but “after 30 minutes, you feel like you are
running up a mountain, so even being able to go 50 seconds longer means a lot,” said the study’s lead author,
Waseem Shami, MD.
The study has confirmed something runners and gym-goers have suspected for years: Listening to music
during workout can be beneficial to your endurance. “Our findings reinforce the idea that upbeat music can help
you exercise longer and stick with a daily exercise routine,” said Shami. “When doctors are recommending
exercise, they might suggest listening to music, too.”
32. Why did Shami’s team conduct the research?
A. To test the effect of music on health.
B. To know the cause of failure in sports.
C. To improve runners’ exercise tolerance.
D. To record the body change of participants.
33. What did the researchers learn about the Participants in the stress testing?
A. They could run a little longer with music on.
B. They created a new record of indoor sports.
C. They ran much faster than average runners.
D. They all enjoyed extreme physical challenge.
34. What do the underlined words “a no-brainer” mean in paragraph 4?A. A dull activity. B. A foolish action.
C. A demanding task. D. An easy practice.
35. What did Shami suggest us doing in the last paragraph?
A. Developing a daily exercise routine. B. Listening to music while working out.
C. Participating in physical stress testing. D. Taking exercise as doctors recommend.
第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)
阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
Being sophisticated (见多识广的,老练的) can get you respect from the adults and other teenagers at
your school. 3 6 Being sophisticated means paying attention to how you dress, how you act and
how you treat others. It might take a bit of effort, but you’ll end up being a confident, cultured person.
37 Conversations are often filled with interruptions, and many people listen only when they can put in
their own piece. If you want to stand out as a more sophisticated talker, spend more time listening in a conversation
than you do in speaking. Listening properly means listening actively. Ask questions where needed and show that
you’re listening to what someone is saying.
Put other people’s needs ahead of your own. 38 Rather than put yourself first in every situation,
consider how you should treat others. A perfect example of this is allowing the elderly to take your seat on a
crowded bus or subway.
Dress for the occasion. Your clothes should meet the expectations of a specific event. For example, if you are
attending a wedding, you’ll want to have your finest suit on. In most situations, like a night out with friends, smart
casual clothes are enough. You don’t need to wear a suit or a fancy dress to every occasion. 39
Maintain a good posture (姿势). Having a good posture is helpful to your overall image. 4 0
To maintain a good posture, imagine that ice water is poured down your-check, forcing you to straighten
as you react to the cold.
A. Listen more than you speak.
B. Listen with patience and never interrupt.
C. It will help in lots of social situations throughout high school.
D. It makes you look more intelligent and trustworthy.
E. However, you should make sure your clothes fit well and are clean.
F. As a matter of fact, you will not be judged by the clothes you wear.
G. Part of being sophisticated is being kind and looking out for others.

第二节读后续写(满分25分)
阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。
Three years ago. I was arranged to work for a few weeks as a dentist in a new dental clinic at Victor Harbor, to
the south of Adelaide and an hour further away than my usual workplace. My first day there was rush driving to a
new and unfamiliar clinic and getting used to the different rules and clinical environment.
In my worry and anxiety, and feeling a little unfamiliar in the new setting, I removed my three
things: my wedding ring, a ring that belonged to my mother and one that was an anniversary gift from
my husband. I wrapped them in a tissue (纸巾) and placed them beside my computer.
During my lunch break, I noticed the wrinkled tissue and thought that it didn’t look very neat and dropped it
into the rubbish bin. I went about my duties and my day went on well; I met new patients and felt that I had been
productive and efficient. Driving home at the end of the day, just moments before I reached my house, I noticed that
I was missing my rings. I felt the heart in my body rose, my cheeks burning red. I went inside and tried to calm
down. I felt sick to my stomach and I had that sinking feeling in my heart. I spent an hour or so making calls trying
to follow the track of my rings. The first people I called was my manager and clinical leader and they gave me a
few contact numbers for cleaners. I got in touch with a lady who managed the cleaning services for the clinic and
she informed me that the bins had already been collected.
Heartbroken, I knew nothing could be done now. I had lost my wedding ring and one of my most treasured
rings my mother’s wedding ring. Had it not been for my carelessness, all this would not have happened. With great
sorrow and regret, I just sat there rooted in my chair.

Dear Chris,
Hope this message finds you well. Last Friday, our class organized an insightful/enlightening “Reading A
Book Together” session, which I believe you’d find it as fascinating as I did.
(介绍书籍主要内容) We chose The Million Pound Bank Note by the legendary writer, Mark Twain,
whose sharp wit (敏锐的机智) and critical tone (批判的语气) made the story not only an entertaining
read but also a profound reflection of human nature.// (活动介绍:共读延伸出的其他活动) What
impressed me most was that we went far beyond simply reading aloud. We engaged in thoughtful
discussions about Twain’s portrayal (描写) of society’s obsession with wealth (对财富的迷恋), and the
conflicts that arise from contradictory value systems.//(共读给我带来的收获) The shared insights from
every perspective greatly deepened my understanding and appreciation of the book and Mark Twain’s open mind.
Have you read this book before? I’d love to hear your thoughts, or perhaps you could recommend other Twain

After two hours or so I received a most amazing phone call. This call was from another cleaner called Jerry,
who was working in the rubbish station nearby. He told me that he accidentally found the three rings wrapped in the
tissue when he was tidying the rubbish. So immediately, he ran to the nearest telephone booth to call the lady
managing the cleaning services for the clinic. The lady told him of my losses and informed him of my telephone
number. Thus, he rang me to my home in case of my anxiety.
I decided to thank the wonderful person face to face. I ran to my car in a hurry and drove directly to the
dustbin station nearby my clinic, where the cleaner Jerry was waiting for me. I expressed my greatest thanks to him
for his kindness and I did want to give him some money as my gift for his behavior. However, he refused my
reward, saying that it was his duty and responsibility to give back the loss to the owners. Deeply moved, I thanked
him again. At last, I got my treasured rings back happily.
下水作文1
Para 1: After two hours or so, I received a most amazing phone call. It was from my manager, who told me that my
rings might had been found, suggesting me to check them out at the counter. The instant I was informed of the good
news, I jumped to my feet, heart beating wildly. Excited and anxious, I grabbed my car key and rushed out of my
house, driving all the way to the clinic. My precious rings were shining quietly in a plastic bag on the counter! The
nurse on duty told me that someone had put it there not long ago.
Para 2: I decided to thank the wonderful person face to face. Dialing the number got from my manager, I wasgreeted with a voice full of tenderness. I learned that he was a worker at the rubbish station who noticed my rings
by chance when classifying the rubbish. So grateful was I that I could barely say a word due to the streaming tears
of gratitude. All I could do in return was some financial support but he just rejected it determinedly. It dawned on
me that kindness is priceless and I should spend the rest of my life passing it down to the people in need.
下水作文2
Para 1: After two hours or so, I received a most amazing phone call. The call was from a clerk working in the
rubbish station. He told me that the rings were picked up by an old lady who lived off selling rubbish while sorting
it, and she told him that she was willing to return the rings to the owner. Informed of the good news, I was wild
with joy. I told the clerk I would get to the station soon. My voice even trembled with excitement!
Para 2: I decided to thank the wonderful person face to face. I drove to the station with my heart beating. After
getting there, I was returned the rings by the clerk, and I also found that the old lady was still picking rubbish. I
rushed to her and bowed to her deeply. She just smiled at me. To express my sincere gratitude, I bought her some
bread, but she refused to accept it and patted my shoulder gently. The sun cast a soft glow on her face, and her
smile streamed in my heart. Since then, I decided to spread the kindness in my whole life.

本世纪30年代几乎完全融化,比预计的时间提前了大约10年。文章对此进行了介绍。
【28题详解】
细节理解题。根据第一段“Summer sea ice in the Arctic could melt almost completely by the 2030s —
roughly a decade earlier than projected — even if humans cut back drastically on greenhouse gas

集的卫星数据)”可知,在找出之前评估的问题后,研究人员对模型进行了调整,使其与实际情况一致。故
选A。
【30题详解】
推理判断题。根据倒数第二段第一句“While sea ice naturally decreases in the summer and refreezes
during the winter, summer ice coverage has steadily been declining over the past few decades because of climate
change. (虽然海冰在夏季自然减少,并在冬季重新冻结,但由于气候变化,夏季冰层覆盖在过去几十年中
一直在稳步下降)”可知,第一句分析夏季冰层一直下降的原因,根据第二句到最后一句“And Arctic ice
melting happens faster itself — as ice disappears, it exposes more of the dark blue ocean, which absorbs
more heat and leads to more melting. This process has led to the region warming nearly four times faster than
the rest of the globe since 1979. (而且北极冰融化的速度也更快——随着冰的消失,更多的深蓝色海洋暴露
