People around the world are honoring legendary chimpanzee (黑猩猩) expert Dr Jane Goodall, who died on
October 1, 2025, at the age of 91. Until her final days, she was touring in California, inspiring audiences with her
passion for wildlife protection.
Born on April 3, 1934, in London, Goodall dreamed of exploring Africa’s wild lands as a child. Her dream came
true in 1957, when she visited a friend in Kenya and met Dr. Louis Leakey, a scientist studying human origins.
Impressed by her passion, Leakey invited her to study chimpanzees at the Gombe Stream Reserve in Tanzania — a
challenge she eagerly accepted.
At 26, with only a notebook, binoculars, and a desire to explore, Goodall devoted herself in Gombe’s chimpanzee
habitat. She acted as a “neighbor” rather than a distant observer, starting her landmark wild chimpanzee study. Over
the next six decades, her research led to eye-opening discoveries: chimpanzees are far more intelligent than once
thought, as they can use tools and hunt for meat, and they form friendships and show sorrow for lost companions.
In 1977, she established the Jane Goodall Institute (JGI). This global organization has three key roles to protect
wildlife and support communities. First, it continues the long-running field research at Gombe. The research gathers
scientific data, and this data directly guides chimpanzee protection work. JGI also works closely with local communitiesworldwide. It uses the collective power of individual actions to spark hope and drive sustainable change for the
environment. In addition, it offers support to youth projects in nearly 75 countries. These young people now have the
chance to learn conservation knowledge and skills to become responsible conservation leaders right in their own local
areas.
Dr. Goodall’s life and work not only made a permanent mark on our understanding of chimpanzees and other
species, but also of humankind and the environment.
24. Why was Jane Goodall invited by Dr. Leakey to study chimpanzees?
A. Her academic background in biology. B. Her strong interest in African wildlife.
C. Her family’s support for her dream. D. Her previous experience with chimpanzees.
25. What did Goodall’s research reveal about chimpanzees?
A. They use tools to hunt for meat. B. They live with families and friends.
C. They are as intelligent as humans. D. They feel sad when they lose a friend.
26. How is the fourth paragraph developed?
A. By providing examples. B. By making lists.
C. By making comparisons. D. By giving a definition.
27. Which of the following can best describe Jane Goodall?
A. Curious and determined. B. Strict and ambitious.
C. Cautious and adventurous. D. Independent and humorous.

If you’re struggling to come up with something you’re grateful for this year, here’s something that can be
celebrated: Artificial intelligence is changing medicine greatly.
AI is still in its infancy (初期), yet it is already showing promise to transform how physicians do their jobs.
Take, for example, cancer screenings. A review of studies found AI could cut in half the miss rate for potential cancer
and reduce the workload of X-ray doctors by 68 percent. The benefit here is two-part: The technology can help
identify cancer at earlier stages. It is also better at determining which tumors (肿瘤) are harmless, limiting the number
of unnecessary and expensive tests that patients must go through (not to mention the anxiety that comes with the
procedures).
And that’s just the start. In 2022, it is reported that about 6 percent of the more than 130 million people who go
to emergency rooms every year are misdiagnosed (误诊). AI has the potential to significantly reduce those tragedies. A
recent study out of Boston comparing the performance of chatbot-assisted physicians in diagnosing patients to just
chatbots themselves found that the bots performed much better. AI can also speed up care in emergency settings.
Hospitals that used AI to detect strokes (中风) from a patient’s brain scans were able to reduce almost 40 minutesbefore a surgeon could take action. That’s precious time critical for saving lives. However, the use of AI in healthcare is
not to get rid of humans in medicine; it is to provide medical staff with better tools to aid patients. And it could free
up physicians’ time devoted to dull routine tasks.
Putting this technology into medicine will surely run into problems. Many people are likely to be doubtful about
it, and some might fear it will make visits to the doctor even less personal than they already are.
The development of AI has aroused great alarm in recent years. It’s really awesome power deserves caution, but
not fear. We can take comfort in the fact that, when it comes to medicine, AI has proven to be beneficial — and is
likely to remain so.
28. What can AI do in cancer screenings?
A. Increase the cure rate of harmful cancer. B. Free patients from potential cancer.
C. Boost the prospects of successful treatment D. Identify the sources of patients’ tumors.
29. Why is AI applied in the medical field?
A. To reduce human physicians’ burden and costs.
B. To ultimately replace the roles of medical staff.
C. To show the value of advanced technology in hospitals.
D. To provide physicians with better tools to assist patients.
30. What’s the author’s attitude towards the use of AI in medicine?
A. Critical. B. Doubtful. C. Favorable. D. Unclear.
31. Which of the following is the best title for the text?
A. AI in Medicine: A Force for Good B. AI in Medicine: Good News for Doctors
C. AI: The Future of Personalized Medicine D. AI: The End of Unfortunate Misdiagnoses
D
Generation Z (Gen Z), people born between the mid-1990s and early 2010s, doesn’t completely reject the way
modern economies work. Instead, they demand that this system be more responsible—especially when it comes to
the “wealth contract (契约)” between individuals and companies. This desire for responsibility has a clear reason: a
big gap between what Gen Z was told life would look like, and what they’re actually going through.
Saad Amer, founder of an environmental consulting firm, points out that young people were taught a “generational
fable”: spend years and savings on higher education, secure a stable career and eventually own a house—a routine
once seen as a reliable path to financial security.
Yet 2024 housing market data tells a different story: the average age of first-time U. S. homebuyers reached 38
(the highest on record), and 52% of Gen Z renters are struggling with high rent—spending over 30% of their monthly
income on rent, a level considered “financially stressful” in housing research. This difference between expectation and real-life experience has reshaped what Gen Z wants from work. They
don’t just want “good pay”—they are eager for fair wealth sharing; salaries linked to clear, public performance rules,
promotions decided by measurable work results, and job security that doesn’t disappear when a company’s profits
drop. They firmly reject “performative benefits” like free snacks or yoga classes, seeing these extras as tricks that
take their focus away from low salaries and unclear career growth paths. Charlene Li, an expert who studies workplace
trends, notes: “Gen Z doesn’t hate hard work—they hate working hard for a system that hides how wealth is made
and who can benefit from it.”
For companies, if they ignore these demands, they’ll keep losing young workers. Gen Z sees their jobs as part
of who they are. They won’t take jobs that make them choose between “earn a living” and “sticking to what they
believe is right.” In other words, they don’t just ask, “How much will I get paid?” They want to know, “Will this job
give me long-term security? And does the company treat its workers fairly, even when it’s making money?”
32. What does the “generational fable” assume?
A. Rent burden is a short-term problem B. Higher education ensures economic security
C. Companies promise long-term financial safety D. Gen Z values higher education to secure a job
33. Why are the data mentioned in paragraph 3?
A. To prove Gen Z struggles to own a house
B. To suggest the U. S. needs stricter rent control.
C. To demonstrate the generational fable fails in reality
D. To show Gen Z’s housing costs are high
34. What does the underlined word “performative” in Paragraph 4 probably mean?
A. No-value B. High-cost C. Just-for-show D. Work-related
35. What does Gen Z demand from companies?
A. High pay and career choices B. Earning a living and easy tasks
C. Company profits and worker rights D. Workplace fairness and job security

根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
Is personal play speed just a matter of preference? A recent advertisement for Audible, an audiobook (有声书)
platform, labeled Glen Powell, who listens at 1x speed, as “normal” while describing Bowen Yang, who prefers 2x
speed, “strange”. ____36____ A TikTok user said, “I listened to this judgmental (妄下断言的) ad at 2x speed.”
Some people felt “shamed” and said they would stop using the platform.
____37____ A survey by The Economist proves this difference: 31% of Americans aged 18-29 listen to audio
faster than 1x. Only 8% of those aged 45 and over do so. This trend can be seen in platform features, from newspapersto YouTube, which even added a 4x option recently.
The main reason is usually the wish for greater effectiveness. ____38____ If you had a ten-hour journey, you
could listen to “Persuasion” in eight hours and 13 minutes at 1x speed. But, if you clicked 1.5x, you’d hear all about it
in five and a half hours, leaving space for “The Little Prince”.
More importantly, listening faster doesn’t seem to affect listeners’ understanding. The average person speaks at
a rate of about 150 words per minute, but most brains can deal with information faster, says Marcus Pearce, a cognitive
scientist at Queen Mary University. ____39____. Further research at the University of Waterloo found students’
comprehension remained stable up to 1.5x speed.
,
For platforms offering play speed options has no disadvantage. For listeners, however, the experience
differs greatly. A skilled reading aloud relies on an artful use of tone, pauses and rhythm (节奏) to stress key points
and express meaning. ____40____.
A. The comparison quickly drew public anger.
B. This difference is why faster listening works.
C. The skill of processing fast speech improves with practice.
D. Platforms benefit as users finish more content at higher speeds.
.
E But speeding up too much may cause the loss of artistic quality.
F. Such a reaction shows a big gap in how people use digital media.
G. YouTube claims that its viewers collectively save over 900 years per day.

I’d loved hip-hop dancing since my childhood, and in high school I took classes that focused on jazz and hip-
hop. Dance was my favorite class, and I looked forward to going every day. And this year, my senior year, was going
to be the best dance class yet. Moreover, there was a showcase performed at our high-school theater at the end of the
semester.
As I headed to the studio, my friend Jessica ran up to me, her face serious. “Sarah, have you heard?” she
whispered. “We have a new teacher, Ms. Barton. And she’s… strictly ballet.”
My excitement disappeared. Ballet? I’d never taken a class in my life. A strong feeling of anxiety formed in my
stomach, but a part of me accepted the challenge. The studio I entered was transformed. Gone was the lively energy; in
its place was a nervous silence. Every other girl wore tight black clothes and ballet shoes. Looking down at my baggyT-shirt and sports trousers, I felt like a complete outsider. I quickly changed, but still felt awkward and out of place.
Ms. Barton stood as straight as an arrow, her serious expression making the room feel cold. At the barre, she
began calling out French terms — plié, tendu. I tried to copy the others, my movements feeling awkward and wrong.
“Grand plié,” she ordered. I bent my knees, doing my best to copy the elegant position of the others. I thought I was
doing okay, until the music suddenly stopped. Ms. Barton’s sharp eyes were fixed on me.
“What is your name?” she asked, her voice cutting through the silence. “Sarah,” I replied, trying to manage a
smile. “Class, I want everyone to watch Miss Sarah,” she announced. My heart jumped. Was she going to praise me? I
took a deep breath and performed the grand plié again. Complete silence. Every eye was on me.
“Now, class,” Ms. Barton’s voice rose, sharp and loud. “This is a perfect example of what NOT to do.” My face
burned as if I’d been slammed (猛烈撞击).
