Virginia Hislop receives a master’s degree in the 2024 diploma ceremony at the age of 105. When she
started at the GSE in 1936-- then the Stanford University School of Education-- her plan was to get her
bachelor's of education, which she did in 1940, and obtain her master's of education so she could teach,
which she started directly after.
However, just after completing her coursework and just before turning in her final thesis, her
then-boyfriend George Hislop, a GSE student in Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (ROTC), got called in to
serve during World War II, prompting the pair to get married and Virginia Hislop to leave campus before
graduating.
Now, 83 years after leaving campus and living in service to learning, Hislop returned to Stanford to
finish what she started and receive her graduate degree. Looking back on her career, Hislop credits her time
at Stanford and the things she’s learned from community partners along the way for her ability to impact
students. “I think I did good things for our local school system and I helped broaden it out,” she said. “For
me, this degree is an appreciation of the many years I've put in working for the schools in the Yakima area
and on different boards.”
At the Diploma ceremony, GSE Dean Daniel Schwartz concurred, saying Hislop “led a life of
tremendous educational accomplishment.” Her fellow graduates and their families gave her a standing
ovation. When Hislop rose from her seat, dressed in cap and gown, to walk across the stage and receive her
master's hood(兜 帽 ), the applause roared once again. She greeted Schwartz on stage and was handed
her
diploma. She smiled for the cameras. Her grand kids and great-grand kids waved and cheered. “My
goodness,” Hislop said. “I’ve waited a long time for this.”

Coral reefs(珊瑚礁) are filled with a diverse range of fish. Some fish are more beautiful to humans than
others, and many people firmly believe that beautiful fish deserve more conservation than the uglier species.
Is the “firm belief” true? You can get the answer from a new paper published in the journal PLOS Biology.
Researchers showed 481 photographs of ray-finned reef fish to 13,000 members of the public. With that
data, they then trained a computer model to generate predictions for additional 4,400 photographs of 2,417 of
the most common reef fish species. They next compared the aesthetic rating (美学等级) of each species with
other characteristics, including evolutionary history, distinctiveness from other fish, conservation status and
importance to fisheries.
After analyzing the numbers, researchers found that the fish humans rated as the most beautiful tended to
be less ecologically and evolutionarily distinct. Prettier fish were also more likely to be listed as species of
“least concern” on the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List.
On the contrary, the fish that humans found to be the least attractive were the most ecologically and
evolutionarily distinct, and they were more likely to be listed as “threatened” on the IUCN Red List.
Unattractive species also tended to be more important to commercial fisheries, which put them at higher risk
for overfishing.
“The less attractive species have the highest ecological distinctiveness, and thus provide the highest
diversity of ecological functions,” the researchers write in the paper. “We need to pay more attention to the
extinction risk of the less attractive fish species, or that might have overlooked effects on reef ecosystem
functioning.”
“Therefore, to minimize the impact of aesthetic biases, scientists, conservation groups and policymakers
may need to change how they communicate about wildlife,” the researchers write. “Making people more
aware of the roles uglier fish play in reef ecosystems could help them gain more support.”
28.What did the researchers do for their research?
A. They rated all the photos on their own. B. They hunted for reef fish in coral reefs.
C. They stayed underwater to monitor fish. D. They used a computer to predict ratings.
29.What does the researchers’ analysis suggest?
A. The research is a failure. B. Fish’s role in nature is equal.
C. The “firm belief” isn’t true. D. Uglier fish are less important.
30.What is the researchers’ advice?
A. Building natural reserves worldwide for uglier fish.
B. Making an attempt to raise people's aesthetic levels.
C. Raising awareness about the appearance of uglier fish.

A culture’s values can be mirrored by its humour. Humour has been evaluated by many great minds
such as Thomas Hobbes, who disliked humour, and thought laughter is nothing else but sudden glory arising
from sudden thought of feeling far better than others. He thought humour to be a negative quality of human
narrow-mindedness.
However, Mordechai Gordon, PhD of Education, insists that humour allows us to view the world from
an angle that is amusing rather than serious. I agree with Gordon. Learning to look at the world through
humour is important.
In the United States, every four years an election occurs. Without humour as a way to express their
feelings, how would Americans be willing to support the election? Television shows like The Daily Show
have become important parts of American culture. They are affecting the masses by unconsciously inputting
politics into their minds. They make politics fun.
Of course, politics is only one type of humour. Social humour helps people through the twists and turns
of the human condition. American pop culture promotes an unhealthy self-image. On the topic of self-image,
Hari Kondabolu stands out. He has a joke about the popular musical group The Pussycat Dolls, describing
their hit song Don’t Cha as a negative representation of women. He points out the obvious offence in
American culture.
A study from Loyola University Maryland has shown that humour is one determining factor in selecting a
partner. Among other things, people look for an outstanding funny bone in a potential partner.
Of course, humour is not always used for good purposes. Humour can be linked to vulgarity(粗俗) and
racism, but, like everything else, it has the potential to unite human beings by allowing us to laugh at
ourselves, our failures and our connections with one another.
Though life may seem tough and depressing at times, all I have to do is look in the mirror at my increased
wrinkles(皱纹) to know that there is comedy out there that even Chaplin wasn't aware of. With that in mind,
remember to laugh with humanity.
32.What did Hobbes think of humour?
A.It resulted in the narrow-mindedness of human beings.
B.It was only a way to laugh at others to make oneself feel better.
C.It had the power to mirror personal glory and national values.
D.It made people view the world from another angle.
33.What is the author's attitude towards political humour?
A.Worried. B.Disappointed. C.Curious. D.Appreciative.
34.How is the fourth paragraph mainly developed?
A.By describing the process. B.By giving an example.
C.By comparing. D.By classifying.
35.What can we learn from the last paragraph?
A.Chaplin wasn’t aware of being laughed at.
B.The author feels helpless and sad about getting older.
C.Never be the one who laughs at other people.
D.The author is determined to face life with a sense of humour.

When we feel empathy(共情), we are able to see the world from another person's perspective (视角).
36 . Here are several top empathy examples.
Sense someone's emotions. A highly empathetic person is in tune with others' non-verbal cues, like
body language. 37 . They can also sense feelings such as sadness, happiness, or anger before
it's expressed. These individuals are sensitive to the emotions of those around them, which allows them to
experience greater empathy, including feeling others' pain and sadness.
Imagine yourself in someone's situation. Empathy is about being able to understand how someone else
feels by putting yourself in their position. 38 . People who have faced personal pain often good
at this, as their lived experiences help them understand others' emotions. In contrast, a privileged person may
feel sympathy but struggle to connect emotionally, as they have not faced similar tough situations in their
own lives.
Feel strongly for people who share your identity. 39 . This is because we understand their
feelings from our own past. We can also envision ourselves in their situation in the future. For instance, a
person of color witnessing another person of color being mistreated by the police not only recognizes the
social injustice but also feels anger because it affects their group. They might fear that they could be in the
same situation next week.
Taking the time to listen to someone and show that we understand their experiences can reduce stress,
build trust, and strengthen community. 40 . This is because they allow us to see things from
another person's perspective. By using these statements, we can connect more deeply with others and create a
more compassionate world.
A. We know the feeling ourselves.
B. Empathy statements are helpful in resolving conflicts.
C. They notice these cues as indicators of emotional states.
D. These are the sorts of people who are usually highly empathetic.
E. You can relate to their feelings because you've experienced them before.
F. We tend to empathize more with people who share similar life experiences.
G. This can lead to a deeper understanding of their experience and a proper response.

The event that stands out in Tom's memory happened one morning when Tom was only ten years
old. He
was at home with his elder sister Jane. Tom was doing his homework when he heard raised voices.
At first he
thought nothing of it since customers in the motorcycle shop directly below their flat often became
loud, but
he soon realized this time it was different.
"Quick!Quick!Remove the motorcycles from the shop." someone yelled.
Then a thick burning smell filled the air. When Tom opened the front door of their flat to
investigate, a
thick cloud of smoke greeted him, The motorcycle shop had caught fire and people were running
and crying.
Jane, who had been playing the violin in her room, hurried to the living room. Jane and Tom rushed
out
of the door and went along the corridor through the smoke.
They were heading towards the stairway at the far end of the corridor when Jane stopped in her
track.
She turned around and headed back the way they came. Tom had no idea what she was
doing, but he
followed suit.
Jane had suddenly remembered the lady in her 70s who lived next door to them. They called her
Auntie
Makcik. Jane began banging on Makcik's door, but got no answer. As the smoke thickened
around them,
Tom could see many of their neighbors—some still in their pajamas—running for safety. The
thought of fear
crossed his mind.
"She may have run for safety like everyone else! " Tom said. However, Jane refused to give
up and
said," I know Makcik is still inside." Jane was familiar with Makcik's daily routine and was
certain she
would still be sleeping. She pounded the door. "Go downstairs. Go now! Go!"注意:

Tom noticed the flame was reaching up. Frozen with fear, he stood rooted to the spot. He comprehended
the gravity of the situation and held Jane's hand tightly. By then, both of them were coughing and their eyes
were stinging. Time seemed to stand still, though they were probably there for only two or three minutes. Tom
begged Jane to run for safety as quickly as possible. Jane tried to shield her nose from the choking smoke and
shook her head. She kept pounding against the door. Tom burst out crying.
Luckily, some neighbors passing by stopped and offered help. A sense of strength immediately replaced the
mounting fear and anxiety in Jane's mind. She told them Makcik must be still in the room. They forced the door
open with all their might. Sure enough, Makcik was lying in bed, unconscious. She was carried downstairs. And
then some neighbours rushed her to the hospital, where she finally came to herself. People in the neighbourhood
felt relieved. Jane and Tom's joy was immense.

W: How interesting! I’ve never been to Europe, but I’ve heard Monaco is a small but beautiful country.
M: Sure, it’s lovely. It has become a popular tourist destination for very wealthy people, similar to Abu
Dhabi.
There is a car racetrack that runs throughout the country.
W: It sounds much more wonderful than my hometown here in South Korea.
M: Maybe, but it’s also very costly to live there! Almost 30% of the country’s population has over one
million
dollars — I certainly don’t have that much money, so I decided to study overseas, which costs less
than
studying in Europe.
W: Oh, that’s interesting, because this hotel is usually for tourists and business people.
M: I’m moving into the dormitory tomorrow and just needed a place to spend the night!

W: Excuse me, I came here for lunch earlier and it seems I’ve lost my new phone.
I don’t suppose you’ve found it, have you?
M: Not to my knowledge, madam, but it may have been put into the Lost Property box. Let’s go and see.
W: Thank you! I’ve looked everywhere that I’ve been today…the bookstore, the supermarket…
and I’ve had no luck, so this restaurant is my last hope!
M: Okay… We have a couple of phones here. Can you describe yours to me?
W: It’s a pink one with a white case. Oh, sorry. I forgot that I just put a new black case on it.
M: Okay. This could be it.
W: Oh, I hope so!
M: Can you tell me what background photo you have on your home screen, so that I know it’s yours?
W: Sure. It’s a picture of me and my sister in the forest. No, wait! That was my old phone.
My new phone has a picture of my cat on the beach.
M: That’s enough information for me! Here you are.
W: That’s it! Thank you so much!

Attention, students. This is an announcement for all third grade students!
Tomorrow is the day when you can choose what musical instrument you want to learn
to play in the school band. The gym will be filled with musical instruments for every
student to try. When you find an instrument you like, find Ms. Anderson on the other
side of the room and tell her your name and what instrument you would like to play in
the band. Playing an instrument is a great learning opportunity. Learning to play an
instrument teaches you how to practice and how to read music. Many of our students
have gone on to play in their high school bands. If you would like to play an
instrument in the band, your parents have to pay $60 per year. This fee is due next
week. It is for the music books, the cleaning supplies, and the instrument rental(租赁).
If you play the guitar, the fee is $10 more because the strings(弦) are very expensive.
If you are not able to pay the fee but you would still like to play an instrument this
year, please visit Ms.Anderson’s office.
