We sat at a riverside restaurant on the Willamette River, enjoying spaghetti and watching
Christmas boats pass. “Isn’t this the best evening ever?” I said, grasping my husband’s hand. We
seldom ate out, and the sight of the festive boats added a touch of magic.
Smiling and chatting, we stretched the dinner out to nearly two hours, endingitwith shared
chocolatecake.I almost danced to get my coat —a black wool one given to me by my daughter.
I reached for the only black coat on the rack (架子) and put it on. Wait, what? It reached
below my ankle, not my knee. And I guessed it to be a size 16, not my 8. Blinking back tears, I
left my number with the hostess, sure the mix-up would soonbe corrected. But no callcame that night,

Monthslater, anotherfreezingnight,my husband and I were getting ready to go to friends for
dinner. I pulled the coat off its hanger, pursing my lips about my lost coat.
“Wow!”Penny, anoldfriend, exclaimedas soon as we walked in.“Veryclassic,”saidMissy, the
hostess. I archedan eyebrow.“You’re kidding. It’s four sizes too big.”I nearly launched into the whole
story, but their words stopped me. For the first time I looked at the coat more carefully and noticed
the fine label. I frowned. Did I need an attitude adjustment? What if I was positive instead of
negative about my unplanned acquisition?
Instead of complaining, I asked myself what I needed to do with this coat in order to enjoy it. I

Buildings and construction contribute to over 37% of global carbon emissions (排放), which
include both operational emissions (from heating, cooling, and lighting) and embodied carbon (from
building materials and construction activities). Retrofitting existing buildings — especially deep
retrofits — can significantly cut these emissions while also improving health, comfort, and reducing
long-termenergycostsforresidents.
Environmental scientist Diana Ürge-Vorsatz emphasizes that deep retrofits reduce heating and
cooling energy use by 80–90%. Unlike minor upgrades, such as replacing windows or doors, deep
retrofits involve a complete redesign of insulation, windows, air sealing, and ventilation systems. This
“whole-building”approachtreats thestructureasanintegratedsystem.Researchshowsthat,inaddition
to savingenergy,deepretrofits leadto cleanerindoorair,fewerallergens,andlowerratesof respiratory
illness.
To meet international climate targets, the European Union aims to cut building-related emissions
sharply by 2050. Ürge-Vorsatz argues that strong funding is essential since the costs are too high for
most individuals. She recommends using funds from fossil fuels to support energy-efficient upgrades.
Reducing unnecessary new construction — especially of luxury homes — and reusing existing
buildingsarealsocrucialstrategies.
Another key focus is using biobased insulation materials, made from fast-growing plants such as
hemp,straw,orevenseaweedlikePosidonia,whichnotonlyreducedependenceonfossilfuelsbutalso
havethepotentialtostorecarbonandreleasefewertoxins(毒素).However,theirsupplyislimited,and
harvestingthemsustainablycauseschallenges.
英语试卷(共 12 页)第 6 页To better understand the environmental impacts of building materials, Ürge-Vorsatz and her team
use life cycle assessments, which evaluate the total impact of materials from production to end-of-life.
Though complex, these tools help builders and policymakers make informed choices. Ürge-Vorsatz
concludes that deep retrofits combined with sustainable materials are never optional. “Will we manage
it?That’snotthequestion,”shesays.“Wehaveto.Thefutureisalwaysinourhands.”

a study published in the journal Communications Biology, researchers investigated nearly 100 primate

The researchers assumed that our ancestors first evolved (进化) hand flexibility, which then

brains would have had to become bigger to use these abilities, Joanna Baker, lead author of the study
said.“Ultimately,though,thetwoneededtogohandinhand,”sheadds.
While Baker and her colleagues predicted that longer thumbs would be tied to growth of the
英语试卷(共 12 页)第 7 页cerebellum — the part of the brain that influences movement and coordination (协调), the team was
surprised to find that they are actually associated with the neocortex, a large region involved in
cognition and sensory information. This suggests that longer thumbs are “linked to thinking, not
movement.” Later, they tested the idea that the evolution of longer thumbs is associated with tool use,

Ultimately,“we’vealwaysknownthatourbigbrainsandsharpfingerssetusapart,butnowwecan

we oncethought, andit alsorepresentsthe firstdirectevidencethatbrain evolution andhandflexibility

Fotios Alexandros Karakostis, a biological anthropologist who was not involved in the study,
comments that the research indicates that adaptations to the brain and hand likely evolved together.

For the library’s management, responding to these messages requires little extra effort, but the

their privacy. Placed in the corner instead, it allows them to let go of that burden and express

The message book is 62 (regular) reviewed by the library staff. Whenever a new note
appears, it is passed on to the relevant department, and then a reply 63 (provide). Some
suggestions are acted upon quickly. For requests that cannot be met, the library also offers clear
explanations. When asked whether a microwave could be put in the self-service area, for example, the
library respondedthatitcausedsafetyrisksandwasnot 64 appliancesuitablefor thelibrary.The

阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
With every step, my legs trembled like a newborn calf’s, exhausted from scrambling up the rocks.
My mind was filled with self-doubt — I was too overweight, too weak, and a total fool for attempting
this struggle.After climbing only onehour,Ifelt worn out,physically andmentally,andwanted toturn
back.
I told the guide staying with me at the back that I couldn’t go any further. His words were simple
but struck a chord, “That doesn’t sound like you. Keep going. You can do it.” I don’t know why, but
something in his tone made me turn around. With renewed resolve, I placed one foot slowly in frontof
theother.
By the time I reached the first rest point, most fellow climbers had already left. I hurried to drink
and eat, anxious not to fall further behind. Sitting alone on a cold rock in the darkness, a deep wave of
disappointment washed over me. Nine months earlier, I had promised to change my life and prove
anything was possible. But here, at 2 a.m., after three hours of climbing, I felt I had completely
overestimatedmyself.
Thisthoughtsparkedafamiliaranger,onethathadonceruledmylife.Butnow,insteadoflettingit
consume me, I would let it fuel me. This wasn’t just a climb between the mountain and me but also a
proofof my rebirth. SuddenlyIstoodup, looked attheguide andsaid, “I’llkeep going.”Though doubt
flashedinhiseyes,myresolutionwasabsolute.
That was when my tears started. I cried not only from exhaustion but from the weight of my
promise and the pressure. I hid my face under my hood (兜帽) and snood (围脖) and pushed on. I
stumbled and fell countless times, tears freezing on my cheeks. For the next few hours, I climbed over
snow-covered rocks, laughing bitterly atthe absurd struggle andendlessly repeating to myself:just one
morestep.
