Dear Terry,
I am absolutely thrilled to hear about your upcoming visit to your Chinese friend's home! To
ensure a smooth and enjoyable experience. I'd like to share some advice based on your questions.
It's always a good idea to double-check the exact time of your visit with your friend beforehand.
You may arrive 5 minutes early to show respect and avoid any last-minute confusion. Besides, a small
gift is a lovely gesture to express your appreciation. Chinese table manners are very different from
yours. It's considered polite to take food from the dishes placed in front of you using chopsticks or a
spoon. Don't worry if they keep filling your bowl up, because it means welcome and friendship in our
culture. You can feel free to enjoy the offerings, as it is a sign of their hospitality and warmth.
I can't wait to see you in China! Hope you have a pleasant trip and have a wonderful time with
your Chinese friend!
With love,
Li Hua
续写:
“Mind? Please sit with me! ” Theresa thought and quickly replied . “ not at all.” “This is usually
where we sit for lunch, and since we saw you at the bus stop this morning, it must be fate or
something," said the other girl. “Maybe we're supposed to be friends.” Theresa also expressed her
willingness to be their friends. And with that, new friendships were formed. Through the whole lunch
they chatted about their classes and giggled about various stories. The three girls agreed to head home
together at the end of the day as they parted for the afternoon class.
For Theresa, the ride home was quite a bit different from the bus trip that morning. She now had
people to sit with and new friends to talk to. She was not alone any more. The time went by much more
quickly than the ride to school in that morning. The girls talked and laughed the entire way back to their
neighborhood. They got off the bus and began the walk to their own houses. One by one, they saidtheir goodbyes and exchanged quick hugs followed by a “See you tomorrow.”

Text 1.
【原文】M: Are you going to spend the summer in Australia?
W: No, I planned to go to Canada, but my children begged me to take them to Japan. I couldn’t say no.
Text 2.
【原文】W: Okay, back to catch 22. Can anybody remember which part we read last time?
M: Hmm, somewhere in chapter 31, I think.
W: Ah yes, here we are. Mrs. Danika had just received the letter from the war department and was going
to collect the money.
Text 3.
【原文】W: We need more space in our room.
M: Yes, that sofa is too big. If we got a new one, we could move the bookshelf into the corner and the
table can go against the wall.
Text 4.
【原文】M: How did you do in that technology competition, Jane?
W: Well, it wasn’t my first time competing against others and it was fun being under pressure to come up
with things within a strict time limit.
Text 5.
【原文】M: Would you like to go to the grocery store for me?
W: I’m sorry but I’m too busy. I’ve got some work to do at the Internet cafe.
M: I’ll go by myself then.
W: Actually, you can order your groceries through the Internet and save yourself a lot of time.
Text 6
【原文】M: Sarah, can you fill me in on what I missed last week while I was on vacation?
W: We gathered to talk about the new filing system. Since there were so many complaints about it, they
decided to redesign the whole thing.
M: Will we be having a discussion on it?
W: Yes, it’s scheduled for next Monday afternoon.
M: I have a meeting with the HR department at that time. I’ll see if I can postpone it.

【原文】M: How long will it take to get to Los Angeles? I can’t wait to see aunt Audrey. We haven’tseen her for such a long time.
M: Me too.
W: I wonder if she still has that fat cat we used to play with.
M: Where are we anyway?
W: Let me take a look at the map. After one hour’s drive from home, it says here that we are 160 miles
away from Los Angeles.
M: That’s still pretty far. How long will that take? I didn’t eat breakfast this morning and I’m hungry.
W: I told you to eat breakfast but you didn’t listen. Well, we’re travelling at 80 miles per hour so we’ll be
there in about two hours.
M: Two more hours. I’ll never make it. Hey, look, there is burger boy.
W: All right, but don’t forget to save some room for aunt Audrey’s cooking.
Text 8
【原文】W: Hi Hugh, can you tell me how it happened?
M: Sure. I was climbing mountains in New Hampshire in 1982. Suddenly the weather became really bad,
there was lots of snow and we couldn’t see anything. We got lost. The temperature was 20 degrees below
zero. We didn’t have any equipment or food.
W: So what happened? I guess someone found you right?
M: Yes, but we were very sick. I couldn’t move my legs because of the cold. I spent two months in
hospital and the doctors removed my legs.
W: So you lost your legs, but you tried to stay active?
M: That’s right. In fact, I decided to make new legs for myself. No one has to be physically disabled.
Modern technology can help us.
W: So you built these great new legs. Can you go mountain climbing again?
M: Yes, I can. In fact, these are better than climbing shoes. The special design means that they are much
more powerful.
Text 9
【原文】W: Ivan, I went to the art exhibition yesterday and I read some fascinating comments on it.
M: Really? What are people saying?
W: Well, they seem to be interested in the exhibition, especially its depth of symbolism. They say the
paintings are filled with energy. Each painting tells a unique story with the choice of colors.
M: It’s incredible that the art exhibition can generate such powerful reactions. What are your views on it?
W: When I was at the exhibition, I found myself drawn to one particular painting called harmony inchaos that represents life. It is a mix of bright and gray colors, which shows the UPS and downs we
experienced.
M: That’s a beautiful interpretation. Art serves as a mirror, helping us uncover hidden truths and deepen
our understanding of ourselves. Do you want to discuss the exhibition in more detail in the cafe nearby?
W: I’d love that. It’s my treat this time.
.
M: Thanks I’m looking forward to hearing more about your experience and maybe even sharing some
of my own thoughts.

【原文】M: With a rise in temperatures and other climate changes every day, people are asking
how they can help to protect the environment and save the planet.
Well, if you live in the state of California, in the USA, the answer may be to buy an electric car. The
state is pushing through laws, which means people will soon have no choice when they need to buy a car.
Under the new rules, 35% of the new vehicles sold in the state must be partly or fully electrically
powered by 2026.
This percentage then jumps to 68% by twenty thirty and reaches a full 100% by 2035. California is
seen as the leading American state when it comes to climate change. This makes sense as it has the
biggest population, with more than 39 million people living in the west coast state.
It is also an area of scenic diversity, from its golden beaches to its forests of giant trees. Which may
inspire the people of California to act faster than their neighbors.
