The human spine, or backbone, doesn’t just help us stand up straight. Inside the spine is the
spinal cord (脊髓), which carries important information between the head and the lower part of the

betweenthebrainandtheotherpartsofthebody.
Thelegsandfeetsend “sense” informationtothebrain,sayingthey’rehurtorhot,forexample.
And the brain sends signals to the lower body, perhaps telling the legs to walk, dance, or sit down.
When someone's spinal cord is hurt, this means that information about senses doesn’t reach the brain
from the lower body, and that control signals can’t make it to the lower body from the brain. When
thathappens,apersonis “paralyzed”,andhecan'tmovehislegs.
Now scientists in Lausanne, Switzerland have given three paralyzed men the ability to walk
again. To help them walk again, the men had operations.Aspecial device was placed directly on the
lower part of their spinal cord. This “ implant”contained sixteen electrodes. Electrodes are small

some success with similar implants in the lower spine. Some patients have even trained themselves

This research is different. The patient’s brain isn’t sending “walking” messages to their legs.
Instead, the tablet tells the implant to send the walking messages. The researchers used computers to
create patterns of movement that would work well with each patient. The patient then uses the tablet

The team mapped a 1.9-mile tall seamount, which is part of the Nazca Ridge (NR), an
underwater mountain range in the southeast Pacific Ocean. The potentially new species that have yet
to be officially confirmed include a sea urchin, starfish and a squat lobster. The findings will be

The team also documented rare sightings of the delightfully named Casper octopus and recorded a

The discoveries are the result of a 28-day expedition (考察) to the NR, led by Schmidt Ocean
Institute. Before this mission, the heightandtheexact locationof themountainrange weren’t known,
researchers said. New technology allowed researchers to study the complex depth with greater
accuracy than what was previously possible. Researchers used a remotely operated vehicle named
SuBastiantogatherimagestomaptheseafloor.
Only 26% of the seafloor has been mapped with such high resolution, said Schmidt Ocean
Institute's director Jyotika Virmani. “Through the map, each expedition let us have a better
understanding of the unknown seabed and made us focus more on the lives on our home planet,” she
said. The Institute's two prior expeditions to the NR and the neighbouring Salasy Gómez Ridge

TheStepPyramidofDjoser
1. The pyramids are the most famous monuments of ancient Egypt and still hold enormous

kings have become linked with the country even though other cultures, such as the Chinese and
Mayan,alsobuiltpyramids.Theevolutionofthepyramidformhasbeenwrittenandarguedaboutfor
centuries. However, there is no question that, as far as Egypt is concerned, it began with one
monumenttoonekingdesignedbyonebrilliantarchitect:theStepPyramidofDjoseratSaqqara.
2.Djoser was thefirst king oftheThird Dynasty ofEgypt andthefirst tobuild in stone.Prior to
Djoser's reign, tombs were rectangular monuments made of dried clay brick, which covered
underground passages where the deceased person was buried. For reasons which remain unclear,
Djoser's main official, whose name was Imhotep, conceived of building a taller, more impressive
tombforhiskingbystackingstoneslabsontopofoneanother,progressivelymakingthemsmaller,to
form the shape now known as the Step Pyramid. Djoser is thought to have reigned for 19 years, but
some historians and scholars attribute a much longer time for his rule, owing to the number and size
ofthemonumentshebuilt.
3.The Step Pyramid hasbeenthoroughly examined andinvestigated over the lastcentury, andit
is now known that the building process went through many different stages. Historian Marc Van de
Mieroopcommentsonthis,writing“Muchexperimentationwasinvolved,whichisespeciallyclearin
the constructionof the pyramid in the center ofthe complex. It hadseveral plans …before it became
the first Step Pyramid in history, piling six levels on top of one another … The weight of the

4.When finally completed, the Step Pyramidrose62 meters high andwasthe talleststructure of
its time. The complex in which it was built was the size of a city in ancient Egypt and included a
temple, courtyards, shrines, and living quarters for the priests. It covered a region of 16 hectares and
was surroundedby awall 10.5meters high. The wallhad13 false doorscutinto itwith onlyonetrue

第 13 页5. The burial chamber of the tomb, where the king’s body was laid to rest, was dug beneath the
baseofthepyramid,surroundedbyavastmazeoflongtunnelsthathadroomsoffthemtodiscourage
robbers. One of the most mysterious discoveries found inside the pyramid was a large number of
stone vessels. Over 40,000 of these vessels, of various forms and shapes, were discovered in
storerooms of the pyramid’s underground passages. They are inscribed with the names of rulers from
the First and Second Dynasties of Egypt and made from different kinds of stone. There is no
agreementamongscholarsandarchaeologistsonwhythevesselswereplacedinthetombofDjoseror
whatthey weresupposed to represent.ThearchaeologistJean-Philippe Lauer, whoexcavated mostof
the pyramid and complex, believes they were originally stored and then given a “proper burial'” by
Djoser in his pyramid to honor his predecessors. There are other historians, however, who claim the
vessels were dumped into the shafts as yet another attempt to prevent grave robbers from getting to
theking’sburialchamber.
6. Unfortunately, all of the precautions and intricate design of the underground network did not
prevent ancient robbers from finding a way in. Djoser’s grave goods, and even his body, were stolen
at some point in the past and all archaeologists found were a small number of his valuables
overlooked by the thieves. There was enough left throughout the pyramid and its complex, however,
toastonishandamazethearchaeologistswhoexcavatedit.
7. Egyptologist Miroslav Verner writes, “Few monuments hold a place in human history as
significant as that of the Step Pyramid in Saqqara … It can be said without exaggeration that this
pyramid complex constitutes a milestone in the evolution of monumental stone architecture in Egypt
and in the world as a whole.” The Step Pyramid was a revolutionary advance in architecture and
becamethearchetypewhichalltheothergreatpyramidbuildersofEgyptwouldfollow.

Students are required to engage in around fifteen hours of coursework each week.
The program begins with a test to determine each student’s starting level. Progress is
evaluated through regular examinations, project presentations, andhands-on experiments.
Successful students advance through the levels, facing new challenges and opportunities
at eachstage.
One of the program’s highlights is the “Beyond the Classroom Series”. This series
provides students with opportunities, which are not available in classes, to visit scientists’
labs andparticipate ininnovativescience conferences.
