B For most people, having something important stolen feels like a disaster. Robbie Pruitt admitted when his mountain bike was stolen last September, he got mad. But soon his emotions took a turn. After letting go of his anger, he found himself on a road to sympathy (同情) instead. As a biker, Pruitt’s first priority was to buy one again, but when he went bike shopping, he found the pickings slim. The shortage in supply got him thinking: What if the person who’d taken his bike had done so because he truly needed bikes to get to work? With that thought in mind, Pruitt came up with a plan and posted it to a local Facebook group. He offered to fix bikes free of charge for anyone who needed it. Pruitt also put out a call for bikes people don’t use, which he would repair—again for free—and then donate to people who could truly use them but didn’t have the budget to buy a bike. The day the post went live, Pruitt was excited about a list of 30 used bicycles. And this was followed by more than 500 posts from people who either had bikes to donate or that needed fixing soon after. By the end of the month, Pruitt had repaired more than 140 bikes for donation. Pruitt tries to give his donations to struggling families. Beyond simply satisfying a material need, he has provided an opportunity for kids in his neighborhood to learn how to fix their own bikes. In addition to practical skills, Pruitt’s lessons teach teamwork, encourage self-esteem, and develop feelings of community. “Pruitt is certainly providing a service, but it’s not the bikes. It’s the relationships in the community. It’ 第 4页/共 12页s the impact he made on people. All the neighborhood kids are spending a lot more time doing something that’s in their power,” Pruitt’s next-door neighbor Danny told The Washington Post. 4 How did Pruitt feel after he went to the bikeshop? A. He was angry at the theft. B. He became eager for a new bike. C. He would rather find his old bike. D. He tried to put himself in the thief’s shoes. 5. Why did Pruitt put out a call? A. To find his lost bike. B. To collect old bikes. C. To raise some money for charity. D. To advertise his bike repair shop. 6. Which of the following best describes Robbie Pruitt? A. Caring and inspiring. B. Considerate and loyal. C. Outgoing and brave. D. Responsible and humorous. 7. Which of the following can be the best title for the text? A. Robbie Pruitt: A Bike Repairman. B. A Bike Thief: A Trouble Maker. C. A Kind Act: Inspiration From A Stolen Bike. D. Bike Shopping: An Unexpected Adventure. C Protected areas have mixed success in protecting wildlife, according to the largest study on the effects of reserves(保护区). A team led by researchers from the U. K. examined water bird data from 1, 506 protected areas and analyzed more than 27, 000 bird populations across the world. The authors write that their study, published in Nature, is the first robust(强有力的), global assessment of protected area influence on bird populations. The scientists found that protected areas with management of water birds and their habitats were more likely to benefit those populations. “Our study shows that, while many protected areas are working well, many others are failing to have positive effect, ” lead author Hannah Wauchope of the University of Exeter says in a statement. Rather than focusing only on the total global area protected, we need more focus on ensuring areas are well-managed to benefit biodiversity( 生物多样性) . “The study compared water bird populations before and after the establishment of protected areas and also compared trends of similar populations within and outside of protected areas. Water birds respond quickly to changes in site quality, making them a good group to look at when studying the impact of protected areas. 第 5页/共 12页“In the majority of places we looked at, wildlife populations were still stable or were increasing, but they weren’t doing any better than in unprotected areas, ” Wauchope says. “That’s disappointing, but not surprising. There seems to be this disconnect between people talking about how much land is protected and whether those areas are actually doing anything positive. ” This research comes ahead of a United Nations meeting in China to discuss biodiversity goals for the next decade. Several countries have already devoted to protecting 30 percent of the planet by 2030, yet researchers say protection alone does not necessarily ensure positive outcomes for species. “Efforts to reach a certain area-based goal such as 30 percent by 2030--without a focus on improving the condition of existing protected areas will achieve little, ” says co-author Julia Jones from Bangor University. “When world leaders gather in China later this year to set goals for the next decade, I really hope to see a focus on effectiveness of protected areas, rather than simply how much surface area is devoted to them.” “We are not saying protected areas don’t work, ”Wauchope concludes in the statement. “The key point is that their effects vary hugely, and the biggest thing this depends on is whether they are managed with species in mind-we can’t just expect protected areas to work without effective management. ” 8. What is the purpose of the UK’s study? A. To see whether bird populations have increased in protected areas. B. To test whether water birds can adapt to new environments. C. To record the changes of water birds worldwide. D. To help water birds survive in hard conditions. 9. Why are water birds chosen as the study subject? A. They are an endangered species B. They can sense environmental changes. C. They can help change the quality of waters. D. They can hardly be found outside protected areas. 10. What fact makes Wauchope feel disappointed? A. Protected areas are not attractive to water birds. B. There is a decline in the number of protected areas. C. There is not enough protected land around the world. D. Protected areas fail to work better than unprotected areas. 11. What is Hannah Wauchope’s advice about protected areas? 第 6页/共 12页A. They should occupy a large area. B. They should host various animals. C. They should be under good management. D. They should give water birds more freedom. D If you’ve ever poured yourself some iced tea on a hot summer’s day, you know that icy goodness doesn’t stick around for long. That’s because ice doesn’t do well in heat. Those same laws that govern your iced tea also govern the rest of the world. Ice, when confronted by heat, will melt, whether it’s a cube, or the ice sheets in Greenland and Antarctica. A new study published today in Science Advances finds that if we burn all of the remaining fossil fuels on Earth, almost all of the ice in Antarctica will melt, potentially causing sea levels to rise by as much as 200 feet — enough to drown most major cities in the world. Fossil fuels are considered non-renewable resources and consist of coal, oil, and natural gas. They release carbon dioxide into the atmosphere when burned. Greenhouse gases trap heat from the sun in the Earth’s atmosphere, causing temperatures to rise. “Our findings show that if we do not want to melt Antarctica, we can’t keep taking fossil fuel carbon out of the ground and just dumping it into the atmosphere,” climate scientist and co-author of the paper Ken Caldeira said in a press release. “Most previous studies of Antarctica — have focused on loss of the West Antarctic Ice Sheet. Our study demonstrates that burning coal, oil, and gas also risks loss of the much larger East Antarctic ice sheet.” Luckily, there are alternatives. This particular watery end can be avoided if energy use is directed away from fossil fuels and towards renewable energy options like wind and solar. And there’s no need to head for the hills just yet. Even the most extreme cases of sea level rise aren’t likely to happen for a few thousand years. The authors predict that sea levels will c reep up as ice in the polar regions melts, at a rate of a little over an inch per year. So if we want cities to avoid the fate of the boiled frog, we’d better jump on some climate solutions soon. 12. What will happen if we burn all the fossil fuels on Earth? A. Sea level will rise to 200 feet. B. Ice sheets in Greenland will melt in an instant. C. Most of the cities in the world will be drowned. D. Nearly all of the ice in Antarctica will disappear. 13. Which of the following statements may Ken Caldeira agree with? A. We could take fossil fuel carbon out of the ground. 第 7页/共 12页B. Burning coal, oil and gas will affect most of the ice sheets. C. More studies should focus on burning fossil fuels on Earth. D The East Antarctic ice sheet melts faster than that of other places. 14 What does the underlined phrase “creep up” mean in Paragraph 6? A. Disappear rapidly. B. Fall constantly. C. Rise gradually. D. Freeze slowly. 15. What is the purpose of this text? A. To introduce a study. B. To make a prediction. C. To explain a phenomenon. D. To arouse public concern. 第二节(共 5 小题;每小题 2.5 分,满分 12.5 分) 阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 Soothe the Sunday scaries Most of us look forward to the weekend as a time to relax, connect with friends and family, and deal with tasks from a to-do list that gets neglected during the workweek. On a sunny afternoon, Callie was reading a poem when she heard a soft knock. She stood up at once and opened the door. Her favourite neighbor, Mrs. Baker, stood outside the door. “I need your help, Callie,” Mrs. Baker said, “and do you know the empty lot (场地) down the street?” Callie nodded, smiling. “The place is a mess, covered with trash. The city is letting us use the lot as a community garden,” she explained. “We need help to clean up the lot on Saturday.” “Sure, Mrs. Baker!” Callie said cheerfully. “I just have nothing to do this Saturday.
