It vastly improved my life. I felt empty and frustrated at how much time I spent on my smartphone. So I spent the last five years steadily stripping my phone down to the basics. Social media was the first to go, then email, then news apps, and then even internet browsers. 24-25上12月四校联考高三英语科试卷(第3页 共11页) {#{QQABJQaEogCgAABAABgCAwEwCkMQkhAAAYgOhEAAsAABiQNABAA=}#}I long considered switching to a flip phone, but I always found an excuse to stay. Ultimately it was two of my students,15-and 18-year-old sisters, who pushed me over the edge. Word spread around school that they had bought flip phones. If they were brave enough to take the plunge, I could, too. I spent $9 on a flip phone, plus $120 for a year of unlimited talk and text on a new number. For the last five months, I haven't carried a smartphone with me, just my flip phone. This is the charming, romantic side of owning a flip phone: more conversations, more eye contact, more connection. The separation between work and life is much more noticeable. I don’t overthink work emails all day, since I no longer carry my work email in my pocket. I am living more like my creative, curious, phone-free children. This all sounds wonderful because it is wonderful. And now it's confession time: I still have my smartphone. As it turns out, our addiction to smartphones is not just on an individual level. Intentionally or not, we have built structures that depend upon smartphone access, making it an essential feature of modern life. While most of the flip phone inconveniences are charming, some of them are so frustrating that they make you want to pull your hair out. Despite that, I will continue to use a flip phone as my primary phone so I don’t have to carry a smartphone with me. And I will continue to evangelize for it. I hope many others get flip phones. We will all be better for it. If nothing else, it'll be nice to have more people to talk to in the grocery line. 24.What drove the author to switch to a flip phone? A. Inspiration from his students. B. Overspent time on his smartphone. C. Disturbance of social media. D. Negative feelings to smartphones. 25.What happened after the author used a flip phone? A. He got less work assignments. B. He spent more time with his children. C. He had more interaction with people. D. He lived a more romantic life. 26.Why is it difficult to stop using smartphones completely nowadays? A. They make people overthink. B. They serve as a vital tool. C. They represent the modern life. D. They bring people many profits. 27.What is the author’s purpose in writing the passage? A. To advocate living without a smartphone. B. To advise readers to use a flip phone. C. To inform readers of a flip phone’s advantages. D. To stress the disadvantages of having a smartphone. C Nowadays, bamboo growth cycles and the dietary needs of lemurs (狐猴) are out of sync. 24-25上12月四校联考高三英语科试卷(第4页 共11页) {#{QQABJQaEogCgAABAABgCAwEwCkMQkhAAAYgOhEAAsAABiQNABAA=}#}Findings show rainfalls are changing annually. Over the past two years, there has been a three-month delay in the rainy season and new tender shoots that lemurs consume for nutrition are appearing in January and February—14 days after the first rainfall, says Patricia Chapple Wright, a primatologist, anthropologist, and conservationist at Stony Brook University. “Lemurs eat a food source that is very adaptive,” Patricia Wright told PBS NewsHour. “It’s able to stand climate change, but the lemurs, unfortunately, can’t adapt quickly to this changed cycle.” Since baby lemurs are born in November, the delayed rainy season is dangerously affecting the survival of them for lack of nutrition available for both the mothers and offspring. “This is why, for extreme feeding specialists like the greater bamboo lemur, climate change can be an unknowing killer,” Wright says. “Making the lemurs rely on bamboo stems(茎) for just a bit longer may be enough to tip the balance from existence to extinction.” The lemurs’ highly specialized teeth are also similar to the pandas’ teeth. Both are the mammals able to chew up stems. But this diet can’t last for more than a season or two because the stems can wear away their teeth. The researchers believe that climate change is affecting the lemurs. The fossil record shows that the lemurs once lived throughout the island. Today, the mammals are cornered on the eastern side, where the dry season at present is the shortest. And if people continue the deforestation practice in the area, the lemurs will have nowhere to go. The situation is serious, so Wright and her colleagues plan to create bamboo corridors within the rainforests, which will provide available bamboo to eat. They want to work with local villagers to plant more bamboo and manage automatic watering systems when dry seasons last long. They also want to build the local economy by allowing people to harvest a part of bamboo while the rest remains with the lemurs, so people will be interested. Wright’s conservation plans include moving lemurs back to other places on the island as well. 28. What does the underlined part in Paragraph 1 most probably mean? A. Go with each other. B. Occur at different times. C. Lead to a heated discussion. D. Call for effective protection. 29. Why will lemurs get hungry if the dry season continues? A. They may run out of bamboo. B. They can’t adapt to the hot season. C. They dislike the less delicious stems. D. They can’t chew the stems for a long period. 30. What mainly caused the living area of lemurs to narrow? A. The climate change. B. Their teeth protection. C. The decreasing forest. D. Their special dietary habits. 31. Which of the following may Wright approve of to protect lemurs? A. Shortening the dry season. B. Forbidding the cutting of bamboo. C. Strengthening people’s motivation. D. Finding other islands for lemurs to live on. 24-25上12月四校联考高三英语科试卷(第5页 共11页) {#{QQABJQaEogCgAABAABgCAwEwCkMQkhAAAYgOhEAAsAABiQNABAA=}#}D Want to know what is coming soon to a cinema near you? Probably not a 1.5-hour-long movie, as in the old days. On October 20th comes Killers of the Flower Moon. At nearly three and a half hours, its length is nearly double that of the average film last year. Even movie fans struggle to concentrate for that long and some viewers even nod off. Afterwards there is a mad dash for the toilets. When does watching a film become such a slog? The Economist analyzed over 100,000 feature films released internationally since the 1930s, the start of Hollywood’s golden age, using data from IMDb, a movie database. The average length of productions rose by around 24%, from one hour and 21 minutes in the 1930s to one hour and 47 minutes in 2022. For the ten most-popular titles, the average length grew to around two and a half hours in 2022, nearly 50% higher than in the 1930s. One driver of this trend is that studios want to squeeze the most out of their costly intellectual property (知识产权), but they are competing with streaming platforms for eyeballs. The hope is that a spectacular, drawn-out “event” movie will draw audiences away from the small screen and into cinemas. This approach has often paid off: Avengers: Endgame, Marvel’s three-hour superhero masterpieces, was the highest-grossing (票房最高的) film in 2019. Last year long movies series made up most of the highest-grossing films in America. Another explanation for longer films has to do with directors’ growing influence. Who would dare tell the likes of Mr. Nolan to cut out his masterpieces? Moreover, streaming platforms, which do not have to worry as much about the length because viewers can pause whenever they like, may attract big names by promising them sufficient fund and creative freedom. Netflix funded and released three- hour The Irishman in 2019, a film that would have benefited from a decisive editor, Irish or otherwise. 28. The underlined part “a slog” in paragraph 1 refers to a(n)___. A. pleasure. B. effort. C. conflict. D. feast. 29. What can be inferred from paragraph 2? A. The average length affects the popularity of films. B. Great advances have been made in film industry. C. Hollywood starts a golden age of feature films. D. The average duration of movies has stretched. 30. What sets the trend of longer movies? A. Competition for the target audience. B. Thirst for more classic productions. C. Influence of streaming platforms. D. Preference for decisive editors. 31. What is probably the best title for the passage? Recently, I carried out an investigation to discover what it was that prevented people from journalling. 36 So, today, I want to introduce a very simple tool—The MicroMOVEment Wheel. It will help you pick up your journal even at times when you really don’t feel like it. 37 She describes creating this method so she could use it as a creative planning tool for her writing projects and goals. While it was originally aimed at writers, you can use this technique to help you complete any project in a fun and creative way. 38 Here’s how it works. Take a blank sheet of paper and draw a large circle, and then another smaller circle in the middle. In the centre circle, write down what you are inspired to achieve. Remember, journalling does not need to feel like a chore in your day. So come up with descriptions for your journalling that are inspiring and energizing. 39 These are what SARK refers to as the MicroMOVEments. Each MicroMOVEment is five minutes in length. So, in the case of journalling, that would represent a minimum of up to five minutes of journalling in one sitting, on any given day. Let’s say you’re new to journalling. By setting aside five minutes out of your day, you could write one word in your notebook that sums up a feeling or an experience. 40 The idea of the MicroMOVEment is to create easy steps to get your journal writing or writing projects moving. When you keep the steps small, it will become double and achievable. A. Next, divide the rest of the circle into eight equal parts. B. It is the brainchild of international bestselling writer SARK. C. There are no hard-and-fast rules when it comes to journalling. D. Where to start and not having enough time were amongst the top responses. E. Daily tasks such as sweeping and washing are time-consuming and laborious. F. Then, list any associated words, images or thoughts that are generated by the word. G. The medicine with this approach is breaking your actions down into the tiniest steps. My fifteen-year-old daughter, Jessica, asked a stranger on the street. The First Chair, a young violinist, called upon each section to play, tuning them with precision and grace. The moment the musical director appeared, a wave of applause filled the air. The annual High School Music Festival was the highlight of my year. As a music teacher, I never missed a session, always amazed by the extraordinary talents the musical directors inspired in their students. But this year might be my last visit. With age catching up, my desire for retirement was growing stronger. Honestly, there was always a touch of dissatisfaction and envy in my heart as I watched these school bands, because I had never been able to develop a band to this level. I taught in a small primary school. My students played beginner music, and they were happy when we managed to play from the start all the way to the end of a piece, with all the instruments finishing together. The complexities of full tone, dynamic control, and balance were beyond their abilities. As the band opened with their first piece, the striking sound of violins, accompanied by the lively notes of pianos, set my heart pounding. Wouldn’t it be great to be the musical director for one of these massive high school bands? I thought as the music transported me. When the last notes rang out, there was a brief silence before thunderous applause erupted. My aging eyes scanned (察看) the stage, seeking familiar faces among the performers. But my vision was no longer sharp enough to recognize anyone. During the tea break, I headed toward the entrance hall. “Miss Jones!” a young man’s voice cut through the crowd. I recognized the concert uniform he was wearing. It was the very violinist I had been admiring. Puzzled, I searched his face for familiar features. It turned out to be Bradley, a former student of mine who was difficult to forget. Schoolwork had been hard for him, and he had struggled through all his subjects. It was a pleasant surprise to meet him here. I was initially hesitant, aware of his academic struggles and the complexity of the music we were rehearsing. Yet, the determined gleam in little Bradley's eyes moved me. I agreed, tailoring parts of the music piece to let him shine without being overwhelmed. "It was you who set me on the music path," Bradley spoke with gratitude. He then recounted 学科网(北京)股份有限公司his musical journey with the violin, from junior to senior high school, ultimately landing the lead role of First Chair in his school’s concert band. I listened attentively, amazed at the transformative power of music. As he returned to his band, a proud smilespread across my face. I was still smiling as I made my way back to the music hall. As I took my seat, my heart swelled with quiet pride in knowing the role I had played in a young man's music journey. The lights dimmed again, and the stage came alive with the energy of young musicians. They began to play, each note resonating with the memory of the first tentative sounds my students had made under my guidance. As the final piece began, I closed my eyes, letting the music wash over me. The music hall, once a place ofmy longing and unfulfilled dreams, nowechoed with a lifewell-spent in theservice ofart andeducation.
