B A new legend is born, one that has already enriched the myth of the Teahupo’o Wave. It’s not about a defeated warrior’s skull or legendary chiefs, but about an impressive battle in the tubes, the prelude to the victory of a young Vairao champion. Surf fans remember the cheers of the French team mixed with tears of joy for their cadet, Kauli Vaast, when they learned he would represent France at the Paris Olympic Games. He had qualified by topping the European rankings at the ISA World Championships in El Salvador in May and June 2023. Spotted ten years ago by Raimana Van Bastolaer, and accompanied by Michel Bourez who is “like his big brother,” Kauli was inspired by Gabriel Medina, fascinated by Jeremy Flores (future manager of the French Olympic team), and supported by all the guys from Teahupo’o. He became a triple European Junior Champion. Selected for the French national team for the first time in 2023, and then coached by Hira Teriinatofa, a double ISA world champion with the French team, the little prince of Teahupo’o was determined to enter the big leagues. A few months later, as he himself admitted, the unbelievable power was with him. In the final, at the start of the heat (a 35-minute heat in this case), the swell was more than just indecisive. When a series of waves with unexpected tubes came up, Kauli, who knew these sometimes changeable waves well, set off and overcame one of the only breakers of the day, earning a well-deserved 9.5. Australia’s Jack Robinson, ranked 3rd in the world, also hit a tube, scoring 7.83. A few minutes later, Kauli added an 8.17 to secure the victory: he had caught the last wave of the heat. Now the face of a popular luxury brand, an Olympic champion, and a competitor for the top spot in the world surfing rankings, can Kauli Vaast get a big head?24. Which sport is Kauli devoted to? A. Ski Champion. B. Swimming Leagues. C. Surfing Champion. D. Basketball Leagues. 25. What does Paragraph 3 mainly demonstrate? A. Great minds think alike. B. Success is always a bed of roses. C. Heroes always have a humble start. D. Help from others is appreciated. 26. What was crucial to Kauli’s victory in the final according to Paragraph 4? A. Jack Robinson’s lower score on a tube wave. B. His dominance over the highest single-wave score. C. The unpredictable swell(肿胀) providing ideal wave conditions. D. His strategic timing to take advantage of the final opportunity. 27. What’s the meaning of the underlined words in the last paragraph? A. Generosity. B. Arrogance. C. Annoyance. D. Curiosity. C To the dynamic beat of Aretha Franklin’s songs, families sit in the crowd at the hall of the Manilla School. They are waiting, eager for the moment when students will participate in a one-of-a-kind program called Spark. The meeting will pair students with volunteer apprentice(学徒)teachers. Lawyers, hair stylists, and software developers will meet up with students who have selected their occupations as the ones they would most like to learn about. Spark apprenticeships provide workplace experiences that bring economically disadvantaged teens into contact with a world they have probably only imagined. Nationally, some 30 percent of US high school students drop out. While improved curricula (课程), better teaching, and modern equipment may be part of the solution, “you have to have the relevance,” says Mr. Balme of his six-year-old Spark program. The gap between those worlds — one of limited expectations and hardship, the other of success and prosperity(繁荣)— hit Balme one day when he was volunteering as a science teacher at a public school in Philadelphia. He was also studying at the Wharton School of Business at the University of Pennsylvania. The public school was in bad shape, with a high dropout rate. While walking back to Wharton, Balme realized he was “seeing all the resources, and yet these kids had no idea what was right there all around them.” That’s when everything fell into place. The problem and the solution were right next to each other. In 2004, he and Melia Dicker founded Spark. Apprenticeships are “not rocket science,” says Holly Depatie, Spark board chair. But other coaching programs, such as Boys and Girls Clubs of America, while pairing youngsters with adults, don’t specifically target learningabout jobs. So far, Spark has created more than 700 apprenticeships in the San Francisco Bay Area and Los Angeles. 28. How does Spark help the students? A. By updating teaching equipment. B. By offering hands-on experiences. C. By financing young apprentices. D. By improving school curricula. 29. What is the major drive for Balme to set up Spark? A. The dropout rate of US high schools. B. The prosperity in famous universities. C. The expectation of disadvantaged teens. D. The imbalance in educational resources. 30. Which word best describes Balme? A. Reserved. B. Grateful. C. Observant. D. Modest. 31. What does the author intend to do in the last paragraph? A. To show Spark’s distinction. B. To justify similar programs. C. To deal with Spark’s challenge. D. To criticize current situations. D A corn plant knows how to find water in soil with the very tips of its roots, but some varieties, including many used for developing high-output corn in the U.S., appear to have lost part of that ability, according to a Stanford-led study. With climate change increasing droughts, the findings hold potential for developing more drought- resistant varieties of corn. The study, published in the journal Science, uncovers genetic mechanisms ( 遗 传 机 制 )behind “hydropatterning”, or how plant roots branch toward water and avoid dry spaces in soil. In particular, the researchers discovered that ethylene, a plant hormone (激素)known to help bananas ripen, also influences how roots grow to seek water. For this study, the researchers developed a new, simplified way to study water sensitivity in roots. They found corn varieties adapted to hot and wet regions like Mexico were very good at making new root branches toward water and avoiding dry areas. In contrast, the varieties adapted to moderate regions of North America frequently grew roots randomly without distinguishing between dry and wet areas in the soil. “Interestingly, the plants that are better at sensing where the water is are also making deeper root systems,” said lead author Johannes Scharwies. “One idea is that if the plant doesn’t waste time growing root branches into places where it doesn’t find any water and nutrients, then it has more energy to grow deeper down where water is more likely.” Genetic analyses reveal two plant hormones, auxin and ethylene, play a role in how corn roots respond to water. While auxin was already known to help control this process, ethylene’s involvement was a new discovery. In experiments with thale cress — a model plant often used in research — the researchers found auxin signaling promotes root branch development toward water, while ethylene stops branching when the root is exposed to air. Further research is needed to better understand the interaction of these genetic pathways before corn varieties can be developed with more drought-resistant root systems, but the findings highlight the significance of studying these localized responses at root tips, researchers said. 32. What is the primary focus of the Stanford-led study? A. Drought-resistant corn varieties. B. Ethylene’s effect on fruit ripening. C. Genetic regulation of root branching. D. Impact of climate change on plant roots. 33. What can be inferred from Johannes Scharwies’ remarks? A. Plant hormones make a big difference to root growth. B. Nutrients guarantee better water-seeking root systems. C. Root branching conserves energy for higher production. D. Stronger hydropatterning was linked to greater root depth.34. What does paragraph 5 mainly talk about? A. Model plants in research. B. Hormones’ role in root growth. C. Genetic analysis methods. D. Findings of previous research. 35. What does the last paragraph suggest future research do? A. Prioritize development of new corn varieties. B. Work out the mechanisms of genetic interactions. C. Concentrate merely on localized root responses. D. Expand practical applications of hydropatterning 第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分) 阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 Knowing how to deal with depression can help you live a fuller, more productive life. This tidy little park was their go - to spot for unwinding and just enjoying some precious leisure time. Max rushed ahead with a soccer ball under his arm, Ava and Sam trailing closely behind, full of energy. It was the kind of day that promised endless fun and carefree laughter. But as they stepped into the park, their heart sank. The once - beloved playground was now a chaotic mess of discarded trash (乱扔的垃圾) — candy wrappers stuck in the slide’s metal bars, plastic bottles rolling in the wind, and chip bags lying underfoot. “Look at this!” Ava shouted in disbelief as she pointed to the garbage near the swings. Max's face darkened with frustration. The three friends stood frozen, their eyes scanning the playground area. The once clean slides and swings were now buried under a layer of candy wrappers and plastic bottles. Ava cast a glance (瞥一眼) at the walking trails, where garbage seemed to have taken over, with discarded bags and cans lying everywhere. Sam looked out at the grassy fields — disaster. The park was vast, but every corner seemed to have been touched by the carelessness of others. “Who would be so thoughtless?” Max whispered, shaking his head. Sam kicked a plastic bottle in anger, sending it flying across the grass. “It’s not just thoughtless — it’s disrespectful.”Ava sighed thoughtfully but suddenly her face lit up. “We can’t just leave it like this. Why don’t we do something about it? We can, say, form a Cleanup Squad ( 清洁小分队)…” she said, her voice soft but determined. 注意: 1. 续写词数应为150左右; 2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。 Max and Sam exchanged an excited glance.
