When Dad returned to our small farm in a wheelchair after five months in hospital, I, then aged four,
became the helper and the spirit builder. I accompanied Dad regularly for recovery. Dad progressed from
wheelchair to a walker to crutches (拐杖). My role included watching patiently, ready to help when my
dad’s determination wasn’t enough.
We missed some social events. Dad couldn’t come to school concerts, basketball games, and other
events when my friends had a strong family presence. I didn’t have the chance to run in the park and be
carried on shoulders when I was tired. But as an adult I realize what I gained by watching my dad heal
his body, spirit and life with determination. I learned that it was up to us to decide whether we’ d be
ashamed or accept ourselves and others as complete. Mom still has a family portrait (全家福) I painted
in second grade showing my father using two silver sticks as extensions (延伸) of his arms.
Most of all, caregivers learn to care. They see the need to open the door for the next person even for
a few seconds. They learn to see the needs of others, even when it hurts. Caregivers understand that
everyone needs to contribute and have a sense of community.
Recently, a participant in a program that I organized commented that I had comforting eyes.Without
hesitation, I responded, “I grew up with a disabled father. Early in life, I would decide when it was time
to be a child or a problem solver. ” Although I may have missed enjoying a ride on my father’s shoulders,
I had a chance to develop comforting eyes and everything that goes with that, always ready to help.
24. What role did the author play with his father in a wheelchair?
A. Taking over household duties.
B. Supporting his father’s recovery.
C. Replacing his father at school events.
D. Entertaining his father with stories and games.
25. What can we infer about the author’s childhood?
.
A He spent a carefree childhood.
B. He focused on his academic studies.
C. He suffered from his father’s disability.
D. He missed many childhood experiences.
26. What is painted by the author in the family portrait?
A. The father using crutches.
B. The family at a school concert.
C. The author playing with his father.
D. The mother helping with the author.27. What can we know about caregivers according to the author?
A. They depend on others. B. They focus on themselves.
C. They grow considerate and caring. D. They can beat mental loneliness.
C
As Internet users become more dependent on the Internet to store information, are people remember
less? If you know your computer will save information, why store it in your own personal memory, your
brain? Experts are wondering if the Internet is changing what we remember and how.
In a recent study, Professor Betsy Sparrow conducted some experiments. She and her research team
wanted to know the Internet is changing memory. In the first experiment, they gave people 40
unimportant facts to type into a computer. The first group of people understood that the computer would
save the information. The second group understood that the computer would not save it. Later, the second
group remembered the information better. People in the first group knew they could find the information
again, so they did not try to remember it.
In another experiment, the researchers gave people facts to remember, and told them where to find the
information on the computer. The information was in a specific computer folder (文件夹). Surprisingly,
people later remember the folder location (位置) better than the facts. When people use the Internet, they
do not remember the information. Rather, they remember how to find it. This is called "transactive
memory (交互记忆)".
According to Sparrow, we are not becoming people with poor memories as a result of the Internet.
Instead, computer users are developing stronger transactive memories; that is, people are learning how to
organize huge quantities of information so that they are able to access it at a later date. This doesn’t mean
we are becoming either more or less intelligent, but there is no doubt that the way we use memory is
changing.
28. The passage begins with two questions to ____________.
A. introduce the main topic B. show the author’s attitude
C. describe how to use the Internet. D. explain how to store information
29. What can we learn about the first experiment?
A. The Sparrow’s team typed the information into a computer.
B. The two groups remembered the information equally well.
C. The first group did not try to remember the information.
D. The second group did not understand the information.
30. In transactive memory, people ____________.
A. keep the information in mind B. change the quantity of information
C. organize information like a computer D. remember how to find the information31. What is the effect of the Internet according to Sparrow’s research?
A. We are using memory differently. B. We are becoming more intelligent.
C. We have poorer memories than before. D. We need a better way to access information.
D
Some specialists doubt often using noise-cancelling headphones against background noise may hurt
people’s hearing skills. Renee Almeida, an audiologist (听力师) at a healthcare trust, has seen a rise in
adults who visit her clinic with various hearing issues but tests suggest their hearing is fine. The problem
is with their brain, not their ears. They may fail to locate where a sound is from, or follow a conversation
with full attention.
The condition, known as auditory processing disorder (APD), is often found in children, making them
struggle to hear in classrooms or focus on a conversation. The rise in adults with similar issues struck
Almeida as strange. She doubts that the widespread use of noise-cancelling headphones may cause ear
infections (感染) and affect the process children learn to focus on sounds. For adults, it may make their
brain lazy processing sounds, just as muscles weaken without exercise. There’s no scientific evidence
that noise-cancelling headphones cause APD, but APD affects about 3%-5% of school-aged children.
According to Harvey, a professor at the University of Manchester, listening experience affects our
ability to segregate background noise. Interrupting what is heard can be more problematic for children
than adults. If a child has repeated ear infections before age five, they’ ll find it hard later to focus on
sounds from one direction. Surprisingly, many don’t catch up and need to learn the skill through training
on apps such as Sound Storm.
Professor Dani at the University of Melbourne says people who use noise-cancelling headphones for
long periods may find listening harder when they take them off. But she says the benefits should not be
overlooked for managing sensory inputs. “Instead of suggesting abandoning noise-cancelling
headphones, we need to stress the need for more comprehensive research studies,” she adds.
For now, Professor Dani recommends bone conduction (骨传导) headphones and hearing training. She
urges patients to listen to radio debates and to take down the lyrics of rap songs. “There’s great bouncing
ability in the brain. Make an effort to listen to what’s being said.”
32. What problem do headphones bring about to the wearers?
A. Making their social life difficult.
B. Affecting their focus of attention.
C. Causing their total loss of hearing.
D. Leading to their lazy state of mind.
33. What does the underlined word “segregate” in paragraph 3 mean?
A. Strengthen. B. Separate. C. Access. D. Create.34. Why does Professor Dani recommend listening to radio debates?
A. It’s beneficial for people with perfect hearing.
B. It’s effective for children under the age of five.
C. It helps train the brain to better process and focus.
D. It’s for entertainment with no harm to hearing skills.
35. What is a suitable title for the text?
A. APD Can Be Cured with Proper Exercise
B. Specialists Call Attention to APD Disease
C. Headphones Are Beneficial to Most Adults
D. Noise-Cancelling Headphones Cause a Condition

8-year-old Evan was standing by the sidewalk when he noticed Mrs. Carter opening her shop again.
Several days ago, when Evan was passing by her store, he saw a closed sign on the store’s door.
When the shop remained closed for not just two days, Evan was worried he’d never be able to get his
“dream job”.
85-year-old Mrs. Carter was a woman selling flowers for a living and Evan had befriended her when
he helped her cross the street one day.
Now seeing her again, Evan ran up to her and greeted her. “Can I help you today, Evan? Do you
want flowers?” Mrs. Carter asked. Evan smiled, “I’m looking for a job! Can you please hire me?”
“A job?” the elderly lady laughed, thinking Evan was too little for that. But Evan proudly replied he
knew many things, like making sandwiches and helping his mom get grocery bags from the car. Mrs.
Carter laughed and asked Evan how much money she would have to pay him if she hired him.
Evan shook his head. “All I want is a big bouquet (花束) for my mom. Her name is Stacey and her
birthday is one week away. Mom says we should work hard for what we want. I want to work hard for
that bouquet. Can you hire me?” Evan asked. Mrs. Carter was impressed and nodded.
Then for a whole week, Evan would come to Mrs. Carter’s store in the evenings and help her and
having Evan around relieved Mrs. Carter’s boredom while she was working. Some customers thought
Evan was lovely and entertaining, so they bought more flowers. Mrs. Carter’s business became better.
A week later, on Evan’s last day on the job, Mrs. Carter was emotional. They had grown close for
working together, and Evan had become like a grandchild to her. While making a huge bouquet for
Evan’s mother, Mrs. Carter secretly placed one envelope into the bouquet. The envelope contained $200.
When handing him the bouquet, she said, “Will you come to see me someday, Evan? I’d be delighted to
have you here.”
“I will!” Evan smiled and waved goodbye to Mrs. Carter.
