There’re lots of articles in which writers like me leave social media and report on how
their lives have transformed. I swore I wouldn’t add to it. But here I am, writing about it.And

I genuinely enjoyed Twitter. The problem was that I loved it a little too much. I’d find
myself checking it when I should be working, running late to my daughters’ school events
because I tried to fit in a quick glance or staying up far too late surfing vast oceans of
information,tiredandbarelyinterestedbutunabletoresistit.
In November, my friends encouraged me to drop my Twitter habit, at least for a little
while. My life was overfull, and this was something I could cut out. I followed, though
hesitantlyandwithalittlebitofunwillingness,becauseItrustmyfriendsandtheirwisdom.
Iwentfrombeingonitnearlyeverydaytobeingoffitfor twomonthsnow.Beingoffline
didn’t make my life thatjoyful. Butthere is oneway thatleavingTwitter has benefited my life
and my mind. The times when I checked Twitter were often the transition points in my day:
when I waited in line or to pick up my kids from school. Freeing up those seemingly
inconsequential moments has been transformative. These moments are nothing I really
considered before and I even didn’t notice their departure when I began going online. Leaving
them unfilled has changed how I walk through time. I may wave to a neighbor; I may feel
gratitude or delight. I may notice that I feel tired or lonely. But this, too, is part of the gifts of
thesesmallmoments.

Some talk of building settlements on the moon or mars to help make sure humanity
survives longinto the future.Others have their sights setcloserto home: onfuture cities under
theocean.
“Technologically speaking, it is absolutely possible to colonize the bottom of the sea,”
says Fabien Cousteau, a well-known ocean explorer who once spent 31 days living in what is
nowtheworld’sonlyfunctioningunderseahabitat,Aquarius.It’saboutthesizeofaschoolbus
andlocated62feetbelowtheoceansurfaceofftheFloridaKeys.
Just as astronauts test what it would be like to live in space, aquanauts try out undersea
living with an eye on the future. Escaping from disasters such as climate change, wars, or
pandemics is one reason to live under the sea. Others include studying, exploring, or
appreciating the ocean. It’s costly and expensive to constantly keep up an ocean habitat which
must pump in or make its own air, electricity, and fresh water. Inhabitants have to deal with
highpressure.Andinfectionscandeveloprapidlyduetohighhumidity.
Despite the challenges, several new ocean habitats and cities are under construction. A
series of space station-like undersea living quarters for aquanauts called Proteus are scheduled
to be completed by 2025 off Curacao, an island north of Venezuela in South America. An
undersea colony called Ven Base Alpha will be built near a hydrothermal vent, which would
supply it with energy.Meanwhile, an undersea city called Ocean Spiral in Japan wouldlink its
surface to the deep sea, using the difference in pressure to generate energy and produce fresh
water.Thissoundsamazing,butitwouldbeextremelyexpensiveandremainsjustadesign.
Not everyone agrees that building homes in the ocean is a good idea. This type of
高二英语 第 5 页 共 12 页development could place even more strain on ecosystems that are already struggling with
pollution and climate change. It’s important to make sure that any construction is done
carefully, says Susanne Menden-Deuer, an oceanographer at the University of Rhode Island.

come to the conclusionthat there is only one way to get the bestof anargument — andthat is
to avoid it.” This distaste for arguments is common, but it depends on a mistaken view of
arguments that causes problems for our personal and social lives — and in many ways misses
thepointofarguinginthefirstplace.
Carnegie would be right if arguments were fights, which is how we often think of them.
Like physical fights, verbal fights can leave both sides bloodied. Even when you win, you end
up no better off.Youwould be feeling almost as bad if arguments were even just competitions
—like,say,tennis tournaments.Pairs ofopponentshittheballbackandforthuntilonewinner
comes out from all who entered. Everybody else loses. This kind of thinking explains why so
manypeopletrytoavoidarguments.
However, there are ways to win an argument every time. When you state your position,
formulate an argument for whatyou claim andhonestly askyourself whether your argument is

opponents but in the better sense of learning about what divides people, learning why they
disagree with us and learning to talk and work together with them. If we readjust our view of
arguments — from a verbal fight or tennis game to a reasoned exchange through which we all

Over-explaining happens often in our daily life. This behavior originated in early survival

This year, I was determined to plan a perfect getaway. My research led me to The Manor, a
grand, historic hotel. As I studied a local tourist brochure, I saw it listed the hotel’s main
attractions — an award-winning restaurant and a grand lighthouse. Simple activities like

Just before we left, my father gave me a hug. “Remember,” he said softly, “we can’t
controlthe circumstances, butwe can always chooseourattitude.” I thought of how healways
managed to turn rainy days into opportunities for simple games, finding joy no matter what. I
smiled, but confident in my mind that our trip would be so perfect that we would never need
hiswisdom.
高二英语 第 10 页 共 12 页Unfortunately, our journey began with an unexpected storm. A steady, cold rain poured
down so heavily that we could barely see the landscape outside our car.Arriving at the hotel,
our hopes for an afternoon swim were greeted by a sign on the locked pool door: “Closed for
Renovation (翻修)”. Our next thought, a drink at the hotel bar, was met with another sign:
“Closed on Mondays”. Defeated, we went to bed early, pinning all our remaining hopes on
visitingthelighthousethenextmorning.
The following day, the sky was still gray and cold, but at least the rain had softened. We
drove to the lighthouse, our spirits lifting as we saw the grand structure rising before us. From
the parking lot, we could see a small, unmarked path winding through the tall grass into the
distance,butourfocuswasentirelyonthelighthouse.“Theviewfromthetopwillbeamazing!”
