How’s this for a coincidence (巧合)? Charles Darwin and Abraham Lincoln were born
in the same year, on the same day: Feb. 12, 1809. Although people hardly think of them
together, yet we want to say that they belong together. It’s not just because they were both
great men, and not because they happen to live at the same time. Rather, it’s because the
scientist and the politician each started a revolution that changed the world.
第4页 ,共13页They were both revolutionaries in the sense that both men changed the realities when
they were born. They seem and sound modern to us, because the world they left behind
them is more or less the one we still live in. So, considering the joint greatness of their
contributions and the coincidence of their birthdays — it is hard to wonder: who was the
greatest man? It’s an apples and oranges — or Superman vs. Santa — comparison . But
if you limit the question to influence, very quickly the balance tips in Lincoln’s favor.
As great as his book on evolution is, it does no harm to remember that Darwin hurried
to publish The Origin of Species because he thought he was about to be scooped (抢先)
by his fellow naturalist Alfred Russel Wallace. Lincoln, however, is unique. True, his
election as the president did cause the recession (衰退) and the war, but that war seems
certain to happen — not a question of if but when. Certainly we know what happened
after he was murdered: Reconstruction was organized and then abandoned, leaving the
issue of racial (种族的) equality unsolved for another century.
Surely we should not deny Darwin’s accomplishment. But their same birthdays gave
us a great opportunity to observe these men of their time.
24. Why does the author say Charles Darwin and Abraham Lincoln belong together?
A. They were born on the same day.
B. They lived in the same period of time.
C. They were both great men in the history.
D. They started revolutions changing the world.
25. What does the author mean by “an apples and oranges — or Superman vs. Santa —
comparison” ?
A. It is hard to tell which one is greater as they are both outstanding.
B. The comparison between Darwin and Lincoln is easy and obvious.
C. It is difficult to compare them as they are as famous as Superman and Santa.
D. There is no point comparing them because they were born on the same day.
26. Which word can best describe Lincoln’s contribution to the world?
A. Narrow. B. Aggressive. C. Independent. D. Ground-
breaking.
27. What can we learn from the passage?
A. Darwin was unique compared with Lincoln.
B. Lincoln had tried to solve the racial problem.
C. Darwin’s theory is similar to Lincoln’s belief.
第5页 ,共13页D. Lincoln’s success in election caused reconstruction.

If someone asked whether you like the arts, you’d probably say you do at least in
theory. According to a survey, more than two-thirds of U.S. adults say the arts “lift me up
beyond everyday experiences”. However, only 30 percent attended a concert of any type
in 2017; 23 percent went to an art museum. Fewer than half actively created art of any
kind.
The mismatch can boil down to the fact that we are weighed down by our day-to-day
responsibilities, leaving our schedule packed. Maybe you like to play a little background
music while you work or do the chores, but even before the pandemic, most of us rarely,
if ever, saw a live performance, let alone visited a gallery or watched a play.
Too often, we let the dull reality of life get in the way of the arts. But this is a
mistake. The arts are the opposite of an escape from reality; they might just be the most
realistic glimpse we ever get into the nature and meaning of life. If you make time for
consuming and producing the arts the same way you make time for work and exercise and
family commitments, I assure you that you’ll find your life getting fuller and happier.
Think of a time when you heard a piece of music and wanted to cry. Or maybe your
dizziness struck as you came out from a narrow side street in an unfamiliar city. There
you found yourself in a beautiful town square as if in a fantasy. They probably stimulated
(刺激) a sudden awakening, much like the shock from a lungful of pure oxygen after
breathing in smoggy air.
If you are among the people who feel that the arts are pure pleasures to experience and
participate in, you might see them as a luxury item, while a preferable attitude is to treat
the arts less like a distracting pleasure, and more like exercise or sleep, a necessity. Then
draw up a schedule of your art exposure journey, and gradually weave the arts into your
everyday life.
28. What prevents people from enjoying the arts?
A. Lack of interest. B. Avoidance of duty.
C.1Shortage of time. D. Art space inaccessibility.
29. What can we learn about the role of the arts according to paragraph 3?
A. They explore mysteries of life.
B. They spark emotional responses.
C. They enhance physical well-being.
第6页 ,共13页D. They offer a getaway from daily life.
30. According to the passage, which of the following statements about “the arts” is true?
A. Most people consider the arts as a form of escape from reality.
B. The arts can directly provide practical solutions to daily life problems.
C. The author suggests that the arts should be treated as a necessity of life.
D. The main barrier to participating in the arts is the lack of accessible places.
31. What will probably be talked about in the following paragraph?
A. Forms of distracting pleasures.
B. Benefits of engaging with the arts.
C. Barriers to combine the arts and life.
D. Ways to integrate the arts into daily routine.

New era requires a new vocabulary. Will we still talk about the “mobile”
phone when all phones are mobile, or when they are implanted (植入) within us?
Technology is everywhere nowadays, especially at work. Some people are really
good at using all the cool new tools that keep popping up. They have something called
TQ, or technology quotient. It’s like a superpower for understanding the latest tech
stuff that our great-grandparents would have found really impossible. Having a high
TQ means you’re awesome at using all the cool new things that not everyone knows
about yet.
The examples are common and becoming more and more frequent. For the parent it
might be a home-school video class. For the brand manager it might be search engine
boosting. And for the clinician, it might be the role of artificial intelligence in supporting
the analysis of a CT scan. TQ attempts to quantify our ability to make sensible use
of current technologies and to quickly adapt, embrace and capitalize on future
creations. This adoption is critical from a variety of perspectives, from social to
business. One trip into the world of ChatGPT and we can see how the dynamics of
AI and search are changing for just about everyone.
Any Mom or Dad can understand the value of IQ and EQ in projecting the
potential for a child’s success. But what about technology? The ability for the child
and the teacher to understand, embrace and adopt technology will be a defining
aspect of their lives as we speed into the future. We are increasingly defined by
第7页 ,共13页technology and our active participation in everything from smart phones to
Facebook. It might just be time for the basic human needs of food, water and
shelter to incorporate (吸收) technology too. And when that happens, it just might be
a good idea to measure it.
While this shift brings challenges, it’s unstoppable. As TQ rises, it will
combine with IQ and EQ, reshaping how we live, work, and learn — turning
adaptability with tech into a measurable edge.
32.What is TQ according to the text?
A. Speed of learning new languages. B. Skill of fixing high-tech
products.
C. Talent to follow modern changes. D. Ability to apply new
technologies.
33.Which of the following people has a high TQ?
A. A manager who seldom uses modern search engines.
B. A doctor who analyzes CT scans with AI assistance.
C. A grandparent who finds new tech devices awkward.
D. A mom who watches videos of her child’s school life.
34. According to the text, what is the future trend of TQ?
A. It will replace the importance of IQ and EQ.
B. It will combine with IQ and EQ to reshape our lives.
C. It will become a basic human need like food and water.
D. It will only be necessary for people working in tech fields.
35.What might be the best title for the passage?
A. What Makes TQ the New Intelligence?
B. Why Are IQ and EQ Important for TQ?
C. Where to Start Adapting to TQ Changes?
D. How Has TQ Changed in the Modern Era?

How to grow tomatoes?
第8页 ,共13页Given the proper climatic conditions, you can grow tomatoes nearly anywhere. Before
you grow tomatoes, check if your area has the right climatic conditions for this
purpose. 36 And if it doesn’t, just give up this idea.
37 One is to grow them from seed and the other is to grow them from the plants.
The seeds usually take six to eight weeks to grow. If you don’t know how to grow
tomatoes from seed, you can consider buying the plants directly. Many of these plants can
be found at most garden centers.
Tomatoes don’t grow well in cool conditions. 3 8 Tomatoes require areas with full
sun and should have enough protection from strong winds as well. What’s more, they
require a lot of water. Therefore, you had better water your tomato plants regularly.
39
Check tomato plants daily for any ripe produce. Picking often helps more to grow.
Once the end of growing season is coming, it’s helpful to remove any flowers as
well. 40 If you still have a lot of green tomatoes during this time, go ahead and pick
them. These can be stored in a warm area up to four weeks, and then they will turn red.
A.It’s not that difficult to grow tomatoes.
B.Doing this can help existing fruits grow.
C.If it does, find some land for growing some.
D.There is one popular way to grow tomatoes.
E.There are two ways for you to grow tomatoes.
F.Pay attention to all these things to grow tomatoes well.
G.They require an average temperature of 65 °F or higher to grow well.

短文。
The Thompson house was always noisy before school. Every morning, twelve-year-
old Mia did her hair at the kitchen table, her fingers moving quickly as she tried to ignore
the regular “clang-clang-clang” beside her. Her little brother Leo, his cheeks still soft
with sleep, was hitting his spoon on his bowl like a bell.
“Stop it!” Mia said, throwing potato chips at him. As she did, the necklace (项
链) around her neck moved a little. The necklace, made of shells (贝壳), was her most
loved thing-a gift from Grandma before she passed away. Mia valued this necklace dearly.
She remembered how Grandma had handpicked each shell during their last trip to the
beach. “This round shell means patience,” Grandma had whispered stories while placing
it around Mia’s neck. Right now, Mia needed all the patience she could get.
As the days went by, Mia found herself struggling less to keep her patience. Leo’s
noisy habits, though still bothersome, didn’t seem as annoying as before. There were
moments when she’d catch him making funny faces or dancing around to music only she
could hear. She would roll her eyes, but deep down, a part of her smiled. One afternoon,
while sitting together on the sofa, Leo shyly asked about the necklace. “Why do you love
it so much?” he whispered. Mia then told him the story of Grandma and the special
meaning of each shell. For a moment, Leo looked thoughtful, and Mia hoped he
understood how much the necklace meant to her. She wished he would be more careful,
but little did she know, that wish was about to be tested.
After a two-day summer camp, Mia came home and found Leo lying on her bedroom
floor, her box turned over.
“What are you doing?!” she shouted. Leo jumped. “I-I just wanted to see...” The
necklace fell from his hand, and the string broke. The shells dropped to the floor like
small white teeth, some of them broken into several parts.
