Choosing a course format is an important part of the course design and delivery phase. Knowing the course
第 3页/共 13页format will help you structure the delivery of lectures, readings and assignments, and build appropriate assessments
and plans.
Types of Course Formats
Face-to-face : Lectures and discussions are delivered during class time and students are assigned work outside
of class. A typical 3-credit, 15-week course would have three hours per week of classroom time and six to nine
hours a week for readings and assignments.
Flipped (翻转): All instructional materials, including lectures, are housed in the learning management system.
Class time is reserved for active learning assignments. Students have clear expectations of requirements and
assignments they must complete before, during, and after class.
Online : All lectures are recorded in advance and delivered online. A typical online course will have one hour
of lecture a week, two hours of engagement, and six to nine hours for readings and assignments.
Blended ( 混 合 ): Class time is reduced and the learning management system is used to house
additional materials. Students are still expected to have the same workload expectations as an online or face-to-
face course, but it is partly delivered in-person and partly online.
Best Practices
When you are moving to a different course format, follow these practices:
●Identify course goals and student learning objectives first, and then choose the course format. After that,
you can structure the delivery of your course to meet the goals.
●Start small. If you taught a course in a different format in the past, try adapting one or two units of content
in the new format.
●Keep improving. Regardless of the course format, refine it throughout the process.
21 Which course format is suitable for task-driven students?
A. The face-to-face course format. B. The flipped course format.
C. The online course format. D. The blended course format.
22. What is recommended before applying a new course format?
A Learning new delivery of courses. B. Identifying learning materials.
C. Redesigning some learning content. D. Keeping a uniform course style.
23. Who are the intended readers of the text?
A. Teachers ready to arrange courses. B. Students eager to change courses.
·
C. Teachers introducing course formats. D. Students exploring course options.

The first day I stepped into the community art studio, the smell of turpentine (松油) hung in the air, thick and
sweet. As a volunteer art teacher for middle schoolers, I’d expected eager beginners until I met Mia, a quiet
seventh-grader who sat in the corner, her sketchbook closed tight, refusing to lift a pencil.
My first attempt to engage her fell flat. I asked about her favorite artists, her hobbies, even the stickers on her
backpack, but she only shook her head, staring at the floor. One afternoon, I found her lingering by a shelf of
watercolor paints, her eyes fixed on a faded print of Van Gogh’s Starry Night. “That’s my favorite too,” I said
softly. She flinched, then mumbled, “My mom used to paint it with me. She moved away last year.”
I didn’t push. Instead, I left a small set of watercolors on her desk the next day, with a note: “Art doesn’t have
to be perfect. It just has to be yours.” For a week, the paints sat untouched. Then, one morning, I found a crumpled
sketch on my desk — a lopsided starry sky, with a tiny house in the corner and a single tear stain smudging the
paper.
From that day on, Mia began to paint. She created landscapes ofthe neighborhood park where she’d walked
with her mom, portraits of her cat, and abstract pieces filled with bold blues and purples. When the studio held a
student exhibit, she submitted her Starry Night remake, titled Home. On opening night, a woman with a
paint-stained jacket stood in front of the piece, tears in her eyes. “I’m Mia’s mom,” she said. “I came back to see if
she’d kept painting.” Mia ran into her arms, and as they hugged, I saw Mia’s sketchbook open on a nearby table —
its pages filled with paintings of a mother and daughter, side by side under a starry sky.
I walked home that night thinking about why I’d started volunteering. I’d wanted to teach art, but Mia taught
me something far more important: creativity isn’t just about skill. It’s about healing, connection, and finding your
voice when words aren’t enough. By the end of the semester, the studio was filled with Mia’s artwork and the
sound of her laughter, as she taught other shy students to pick up a paintbrush and start creating.
24. Why did Mia refuse to paint at first?
A. She had no interest in art at all. B. She was sad about her mother’s departure.
C. She thought her painting skills were poor. D. She disliked the volunteer art teacher.
25. What made Mia finally start painting?
A. The teacher’s gift of watercolors and an encouraging note.
B. The studio’s call for entries for the student exhibit.
C Her mother’s sudden return to the neighborhood.
·
D. The sight of Van Gogh’s Starry Night in the studio.
26. What can we infer about Mia’s mother from the passage?
A. She was a professional artist working far away. B. She came back mainly to visit the art exhibit.
C. She had a close bond with Mia through painting. D. She disapproved of Mia’s passion for art.
27. What lesson did the author learn from Mia?
A. Art is a powerful tool for emotional expression and connection.
B. Teaching art requires patience and professional skills.
C. Volunteer work can bring unexpected fame and recognition.
D. Children’s creativity should be encouraged from an early age.

There are numerous online personality quizzes that claim to determine whether your left or right brain is more
dominant. Left-brained people are supposedly logical and excel at language and math while right-brained people
are more imaginative, emotionally intelligent and skilled with spatial reasoning. There’s just one problem: That’s
not how brains work.
Popular science enthusiasts sort of took this idea and spread it far and wide, and it’s become woven in popular
culture now and won’t disappear anytime soon.
Despite this enduring belief, there’s no such thing as being “right-brained” or “left-brained” . Whether
you’re someone who tends more towards creativity or logic has nothing to do with one hemisphere (半球) of
your brain being dominant over the other. But the actual science of how the two halves of our brains work
together is
sometimes stranger than fiction.
The human brain is divided into two hemispheres, the left and right. In all vertebrate (脊椎的) animals, the
right hemisphere controls the left side of the body and vice versa. And scientists have long known, thanks to the
behaviors of patients who suffered brain injuries, that different areas of the brain do different things.
But many scientists struggled with this idea, because the very suggestion that the left and right halves of the
brain operate differently disrupted the idea that nature tends toward perfect symmetry (对称).
Work by neuroscientists (神经系统科学家) has revealed the importance of different hemispheres ofthe brain
for different activities. However, their research quickly saw some misinterpretations in the general public: Some
presumed creative people must be right-brained and logical people left-brained. It is proven that not only is
personality unrelated to the different halves of the brain, but people aren’t really right — or left-brained to begin
with. The idea that we have left-dominant people and right-dominant people, and that this is related to personality,
第 6页/共 13页is categorically false. That’s never been supported in the neuroscience community. Neuroscientists don’t believe
that and never have.
What scientists learned is that there are really important differences between the left hemisphere and the right
hemisphere. It’s just that they have nothing to do with personality or whether cognitive strategy is more logical or
free spirited or creative. While researchers have shown the limitations of how the hemispheres of our brains
influence our lives, it’s not difficult to understand the appeal of such ideas. People are endlessly fascinated by
themselves and their friends, and the subtle differences in how people think about the world are really meaningful
to them. When you come up with an online quiz that tells us something about ourselves, we are drawn to that. It’s
irresistible. But you have to take it with an enormous grain of salt.
28. What do numerous personality quizzes online claim they are able to do?
A. Distinguish between the two hemispheres of one’s brain.
B. Determine whether one is left-brained or right-brained.
C. Tell if one is more of a linguist or of a mathematician.
D. Figure out how one’s brain performs different tasks.
29. What does the underlined word “woven” in paragraph 2 mean?
A. Scattered. B. Lifted. C. Integrated. D. Hidden.
30. Why did many scientists disagree that different brain areas do different things?
A. It contradicts the assumption that the two hemispheres ofthe brain are symmetrical.
B. It dismisses the view that the universe has been evolving in a consistent manner.
C. It goes against the idea that the left and right halves of the brain work together.
D. It disrupts the idea that the right hemisphere of the brain controls the left side of the body.
31. What are we advised to do with an online quiz that tells us something about ourselves?
A. Challenge its authority. B. Examine its originality.
C. Evaluate its popularity. D. Question its reliability.

With population increases and global urbanisation ever accelerating, much attention is focused on the
sustainability of our cities and scarce attention is paid to the countryside.
Rural life is associated with closely-knit communities, sense of belonging, and a simple, tranquil life.
Yet whilst some or all of these elements exist in the countryside, so do conservatism and a lack of
employment
opportunities. And it is mostly due to the latter that rural communities are suffering. Attracted by the improved
第 7页/共 13页economics of urban areas, country-dwellers across the world are moving out, contributing to the excessive
crowdedness of densely populated cities, and leaving the countryside in emptiness.
So how can the countryside ensure its survival among these changes, or should it at all? Rural dwellers use
more energy maintaining their mostly separate buildings and they are heavier automobile users due to the distance
between residences. We may be piled up like boxes in the city, but this brings energy efficiency that the countryside
cannot match. Rural energy requirements result in higher carbon emissions per person than in the city, so it is
actually irresponsible to advocate such a lifestyle choice.
Protecting the countryside is a hot topic. Those who have made their fortunes in the city often buy second
homes in the countryside. Although an idealised view of the countryside is common the reality is that rural life
has continuously evolved. Industrialisation brought an increase in divisions of labour, changing social links
between rural people. The Internet has introduced once foreign cultures into the countryside. Improved travel
connections and affordability have made the world more accessible, creating a “global village” . Considering
these changes, surely an evolving countryside is unavoidable.
As the world continues to urbanise, the voices calling for rural preservation may well grow louder. But change
is inevitable (不可避免的). We know that the world is going to see new cities emerging from the dust and current
cities growing into megacities, but the future of the countryside is less clear.
32. What has become of the rural areas nowadays?
A. They are becoming somewhat deserted. B. They are being increasingly urbanised.
C. They are closely-knit communities. D. They are haunted by conservatism.
33. What does the author think of the rural lifestyle?
A. It is impossible to survive given the on-going changes.
B. It is less energy-efficient compared to that in cities.
C. It is excessively crowded and densely populated.
D. It is a choice all rich people will support.
34. What do we learn about the countryside with industrialisation and technological advances?
A. It is destined to change gradually. B. It will present an idealised way of life.
C. It is likely to embrace foreign cultures. D. It will become increasingly diversified.
35. Which of the following would be the most suitable title for the passage?
A. The Rapid Urbanisation and Its Global Impact B. Second Homes in the Countryside: A New Trend
C. Energy Efficiency: City or Countryside D. The Decline of Rural Areas: Causes and Future

How to Comfort an Anxious Friend
You’ve probably heard many times that when trying to comfort someone filled with anxiety, prioritize
“presence over advice” and “connection over correction” . ___36___ So experts share with us what we need to pay
attention to in detail.
___37___ This phrase is annoying because it minimizes people’s experience and suggests they have control
over something that is largely involuntary. No one wants to have a racing heartbeat or be sweating and shaking.
Maybe anxious people already tried that but failed. A better response is: “I see you’re fearful right now. Can I sit
with you?”
Similarly, keep away from saying “There’s nothing to be anxious about.” Anxiety disorders don’t respond to
logic. If you look down on someone’s concerns, it makes them feel like they’re doing something wrong, which will
make them break down. Instead, try saying: “That sounds really difficult. Would you like to talk about what’s going
through in your mind?” ___38___
Don’t ask “Are you seriously worried again?” It might express attitudes of indifference and contempt (轻蔑).
___39___ The following words may be more helpful: “I’ve noticed you seem kind oftense today. Is everything OK?
Let’s sit together and think through what can be helpful.” You’re creating a safe place where they can open up, be
themselves, and share their worries.
Offering “Everything will be fine” is unhelpful. It only provides false comfort — you can’t know whether the
things will be good or not. What your anxious friends need is something practical. ___40___ It helps them see the
whole picture and feel prepared.
A. It would be wise to lend a hand.
B. Nevertheless, many still fail to do so in practice.
C. Avoid saying “Just calm down.”
D. This will encourage them to seek professional help.
E. By doing this, you are showing kindness rather than judging them.
F. They will let the anxious people feel a sense of shame and unworthiness.
G. In this case, discussing possible outcomes and planning to handle each is better.

Sports are more than competitions. To me, they mean growth under the care of others. I learned this the hard
way.
I used to be very shy and often felt lonely. Although I did well in all the academic subjects, I was afraid of
physical education. That’s because my classmates often laughed at me.
“Look at that girl,” they said. “Her feet don’t leave the ground when she runs!”
Their words always embarrassed me. Moreover, whenever the teacher organized some competitive games, no
one in the class liked to have me as their partner or team member. As a result, I often ended up looking at others
enjoy their games.
Things would go on like that if not for a sports meet in my high school. By mistake, my name was put on the
list of those who would compete in the women’s 1,500 meters race. By the time people found the mistake, it was
too late to change.
One girl who was a natural athlete said to me, “I couldn’t run that race in your place, because I’ve signed up
for three items already. This time, you should run for yourself.” Other athletic girls of the class said the same.
I was utterly dumbfounded. 1,500 meters! Running against the best runners from other classes! And in front of
students of the entire school! It would be the worst nightmare I’d ever have! Oh, my god! Giving up is out of the
question now. What should I do? I was lost in a dilemma.
Just at that time, my classmates noticed my awkwardness. “You still have time to catch up because there is
still one month before the sports meet.” They all said this to me, including my teacher.
My deskmate patted me on the shoulder, “Cool! You will run for our class! And we will do training together.”
Yes, “This is not just for myself, but for my class too.” I said to myself. But still, 1,500 meters to me was like
Mount Everest to a beginning climber. I had no idea even how to start my preparation.

Choosing a course format is an important part of the course design and delivery phase. Knowing the course
format will help you structure the delivery of lectures, readings and assignments, and build appropriate assessments
21. Which course format is suitable for task-driven students?
A. The face-to-face course format. B. The flipped course format.
C. The online course format. D. The blended course format.
22. What is recommended before applying a new course format?
A. Learning new delivery of courses. B. Identifying learning materials.
C. Redesigning some learning content. D. Keeping a uniform course style.
23. Who are the intended readers of the text?
A. Teachers ready to arrange courses. B. Students eager to change courses.

By the end of the semester, the studio was filled with Mia’s artwork and the
第 8页/共 27页sound of her laughter, as she taught other shy students to pick up a paintbrush and start creating.
C. Her mother’s sudden return to the neighborhood.

Despite this enduring belief there’s no such thing as being “right-brained” or “left-brained” . Whether you’re
someone who tends more towards creativity or logic has nothing to do with one hemisphere (半球) of your brain
being dominant over the other. But the actual science of how the two halves of our brains work together is
sometimes stranger than fiction.
The human brain is divided into two hemispheres, the left and right. In all vertebrate (脊椎的) animals, the
第 10页/共 27页right hemisphere controls the left side of the body and vice versa.
It is proven that not only is
personality unrelated to the different halves of the brain, but people aren’t really right — or left-brained to begin
with. The idea that we have left-dominant people and right-dominant people, and that this is related to personality,
is categorically false.
While researchers have shown the limitations of how the hemispheres of our brains
influence our lives it’s not difficult to understand the appeal of such ideas.

Attracted by the improved
economics of urban areas, country-dwellers across the world are moving out, contributing to the excessive
crowdedness of densely populated cities, and leaving the countryside in emptiness.
Although an idealised view of the countryside is common, the reality is that rural life has
continuously evolved. Industrialisation brought an increase in divisions of labour, changing social links between
rural people. The Internet has introduced once foreign cultures into the countryside. Improved travel connections
and affordability have made the world more accessible, creating a “global village” . Considering these changes,
surely an evolving countryside is unavoidable.

You’ve probably heard many times that when trying to comfort someone filled with anxiety, prioritize
“presence over advice” and “connection over correction” .(想必您已经多次听到这样的说法: 当试图安慰—位
“ So experts share with us what we need to pay attention to in detail.(因此,专家们详细地向我们介绍了我们需
This phrase is annoying because it minimizes people’s experience and suggests they have control over
something that is largely involuntary. No one wants to have a racing heartbeat or be sweating and shaking. Maybe
anxious people already tried that but failed. A better response is: “I see you’re fearful right now. Can I sit with you?”
Similarly, keep away from saying “There’s nothing to be anxious about.” Anxiety disorders
don’t respond to logic. If you look down on someone’s concerns, it makes them feel like they’re doing something
wrong,
第 16页/共 27页which will make them break down. Instead, try saying: “That sounds really difficult. Would you like to talk about
what’s going through in your mind?”(同样地, 不要说 “ 没什么可担心的 ” 。
Don’t ask “Are you seriously worried again?” It might express attitudes of indifference and contempt.
Offering “Everything will be fine” is unhelpful. It only provides false comfort — you can’t know
whether the things will be good or not. What your anxious friends need is something practical.(说 “ —切都会好
后—句提到 “ It helps them see the whole picture and feel prepared(这有助于他们全面了解

注意: 1.续写词数应为 150 个左右;
Fortunately, my deskmate gave me a hand.
With the shot ofthe starting gun, I dashed out and ran as fast as 1 could, as ifit were a 200-meter race.
Fortunately, my deskmate gave me a hand. She drew up a detailed training plan for me. Every day
after school, we would head to the playground. At first, I could only run a short distance and felt exhausted quickly.
But she always encouraged me, saying, “Come on! You are getting better every day.” She ran alongside me,
correcting my running posture and pace. Week by week, I gradually built up my stamina and my speed increased.
With her help and the support of my classmates, I became more confident.
With the shot ofthe starting gun, I dashed out and ran as fast as I could, as ifit were a 200-meter race. But
soon I realized I needed to conserve my energy. Remembering my deskmate’s words, I adjusted my rhythm. As I
ran, I could hear my classmates cheering me on. Their voices gave me strength. When I felt like giving up, I
thought of the efforts I had made and the trust they placed in me. In the end, I crossed the finish line. Although I
didn’t win the first place, I finished the race, and I knew I had overcome myself.
