Spring is the perfect time to grow things . Try one or more of these plant experiments for fun and
learning.
Colour carnations (康乃馨)
Fill a vase or glass with water and colour the water with food colouring . Add a white carnation stalk
and watch the plant become colourful as it " drinks " the coloured water . This is a great short experiment
to demonstrate how plants take in water .Root for root vegetables
Find out how root vegetables form underground by planting them in a clear container . Clear jars are
perfect for this , but a clear vase or other containers work just as well . First , fill the bottom of the
container with small stones . Next , add potting soil . Plant root vegetable seeds in each jar . Keep the soil
wet and enjoy watching the root form . Best of all , when the vegetable is done growing , you can eat it .
Study speedy sunflowers
Sunflower seeds sprout and grow rapidly , making this the perfect flower for impatient children and a
classic preschool activity . These seeds can be started just about anywhere , even in a paper coffee cup or
yogurt container . Kids love seeing the plant push its way out of the soil , wearing the seed skin like a hat !
Move your plant to a flower pot after it sprouts to observe the flower as it forms .
Make a grass basket
Grass is another seed that grows fast . Make a living basket by lining a basket with plastic and filling it
with potting soil . Put grass seeds on top and lightly mist (物喷雾) them with water daily .
Growing plants is a great way to enjoy some learning - and a little sunshine - in your daily routine .
Try any of these inexpensive garden experiments for a fun project .
21. Which experiment should you choose if you want to see how plants absorb water ?
A . Study speedy sunflowers . B . Make a grass basket .
C . Root for root vegetables . D . Colour carnations .
22. What is special about " Root for root vegetables "?
A . It allows you to enjoy the fruits of your labour . B . It has to be carried out in a vase .
C . It requires the use of food colouring . D . It needs to be done outdoos .
23. What do sunflower and grass seeds have in common ?
A . They need little water . B . They grow very quickly .
C . They prefer clear containers . D . They need less sunshine .

It’s never too late to fulfill your dreams. After more than half a century since his last class at the
University of Cincinnati (UC), Paul Blom, 93, walked alongside other students at the university’s official
graduation ceremony in December, 2019, where he received an associate’s degree.
The World War Ⅱ veteran (老兵) first enrolled at the university in 1946, after returning home from
serving in the Navy for three years. “I came down to UC thinking I was going to go to school, but you
know, it was late, it was almost August, and there was no room for me,” Blom told WCPOTV.
Blom enrolled in UC’s evening college program where he took night classes in traffic management
for nine years. But as he became more involved with his family’s trucking business, he decided to stop
attending. “You know, it kind of slipped by,” he said. “I think I only lacked maybe two courses for somereason or another. I just didn’t ever go back and finish that.”
Back in May, Blom’s daughter, Paula Baxter, reached UC to see if her father could receive an
honorary degree and the university found that it could offer him much more. After discovering that Blom
received more than enough credits to be qualified for an associate’s degree through UC Blue Ash College,
a regional college within the University of Cincinnati, university officials were able to issue him with the
associate’s degree he had earned in full all those years ago.
“It’s very inspirational to see a part of the Greatest Generation receive his degree and be a part of
this ceremony,” said Terence Harrison, program manager of Veterans Programs and Services, according to
the university website. “It just goes to show that you’re never too old to see your dreams fulfilled.”
24.How old was Paul Blom when he began to serve in the Navy?
A.27. B.21. C.25. D. 17.
25.Why did Paul Blom give up night classes?
A.Traffic management was not suitable for him.
B.Traffic management took too many years.
C.He wasn’t interested in two courses for some reason.
D.He had no time to spare for the classes.
26.Which of the following can best describe Paul Blom according to Terence Harrison?
A.Inspiring. B.Reliable. C.Humorous. D.Intelligent.
27.What lesson can we get from Paul Blom?
A.Knowledge is power. B.Practice makes perfect.
C.Never let age limit your dreams. D.Pride goes before a fall.

Five years ago, French navy officer Jérôme Chardon was listening to a radio program about the
journey of the bar-tailed godwit, a bird that migrates 14,000 kilometers between New Zealand and Alaska.
Chardon understood how treacherous the journey would be, as heavy storms frequently hit Pacific island
communities. Yet, somehow, bar-tailed godwits routinely pass through the area uninjured. Chardon
wondered whether learning how birds traveled could help coastal communities avoid natural disasters.
This past January, a team from France’s National Museum of Natural History (NMNH) began
experiments designed to test Chardon’s idea. Researchers with a project led by Frédéric Jiguet from
NMNH equipped 56 birds of five species with cutting- edge animal tracking technology. The team
members were ferried to remote islands in French Polynesia, where they attached tags (标签) using
tracking technology. These tags sent the birds’ locations to the International Space Station, which sent the
data back to scientists on Earth who could then follow the birds — waiting to see how the birds responded
to natural disasters. The project is focusing on birds’ ability to hear the low-frequency sound humans cannot hear.
Researchers believe it is most likely that signal birds would use the sound to sense storms and tsunamis
(海啸). In a 2014 study, scientists tracking a kind of golden-winged birds in the central and southeastern
America found that the birds flew up to 1,500 kilometers to escape from an outbreak of tornadoes that
killed 35 people. The birds fled at least 24 hours before any extreme weather hit, leaving the scientists to
believe that they had heard the storm system from more than 400 kilometers away.
The team plans on tagging hundreds more birds across the Pacific to prepare for a potential
tsunami.“I think if there’s one wave that spreads across islands, we can get data from different species at
different locations,” says Jiguet. “That will say it’s worth continuing to tag and to develop local systems to
better analyze this. There are chances that we will develop a bird-based tsunami early warning system.”
28.Which of the following best explains the word “treacherous” underlined in paragraph 1?
A.Strange. B.Unknown. C.Risky. D.Frequent.
29.What is the function of the tags?
A.Reporting the birds’ situations. B.Tracking natural disasters.
C.Distinguishing bird species. D.Guiding researchers to islands.
30.Why is the 2014 study mentioned in paragraph 3?
A.To explain a concept. B.To present a new topic.
C.To prove an assumption. D.To make comparisons.
31.What might be the best title for the text?
A.How Can Birds Avoid Natural Disasters? B.Can Birds Warn Us of Natural Disasters?
C.How Does a Warning System Function? D.Can Birds Play a Role in Human Research?
D
My husband, children and I were in Hawaii. Here, we were introduced to the ancient Hawaiian
concept of mālama (to care for) which encourages visitors to give back to the environment and local
communities through activities like habitat restoration, beach cleanups or food provision. But mālama
goes beyond eco-tourism — it’s about leaving a place better than you found it.
And after seeking out these experiences during a three-week stay, we found mālama not only
improves Hawaii, but it also made our time there much more meaningful.
Mālama volunteer experiences are found across the islands. For example, on Maui, you can help
restore native forests and volunteer at a nursery; while on O’ahu, visitors can clear invasive algae from
Maunalua Bay. In some cases, travelers booking with partnering hotels and participating in designated
activities will qualify for a discounted — or even free — night at dozens of hotels and resorts.
“Mālama today is more vital than ever,” our guide Rogers said. “Too many tourists walk carelessly
on our land, ignoring restrictions and damaging sensitive ecosystems... don’t just think Hawaii isbeautiful; help keep it that way. It’s a shared responsibility.” As Rogers explained, mālama isn’t just about
seeing or appreciating a landscape; it invites visitors to connect and contribute to it, with the idea that
caring for a place fosters a stronger relationship with it.
After eight days, we ventured to Molokai, Hawaii’s least developed island. No resorts or chain
stores spoiled its wild beauty — just dramatic cliffs meeting rough seas. Deep in the eastern wilderness,
we met Greg Solatario, whose family has taken care of this land for generations. His simple off-grid life
perfectly embodied mālama. Greg welcomed us warmly before leading us through jungle-covered ruins of
ancestral villages. As we approached, his son Devak blew a conch shell — a traditional request to enter.
“The land remembers,” Greg explained, showing us medicinal plants and ancient fishing spots. His
parting words stayed with me: “Mālama shouldn’t be just Hawaiian — the whole world needs this way of
caring.”
32.How does the author present the topic in the first paragraph?
A.By explaining a concept. B.By giving examples.
C.By quoting an expert. D.By providing statistics.
33.What can Mālama volunteers experience in Hawaii?
A.Asking for hotel discounts. B.Reviving local forests.
C.Developing Maunalua Bay. D.Organizing big activities.
34.What do we know about Greg Solatario’s family?
A.They have long protected the land. B.They built new resorts in the wild.
C.They offered guided tours to locals. D.They fixed up the old village ruins.
35.Which of the following best describes the author’s trip in Hawaii?
A.Where there is a will, there is a way. B.The wise improve what they enjoy.
C.God helps those who help themselves. D.When in Rome, do as the Romans do.

Recycling( 回收利用 ) has become more and more important in our efforts to protect the
environment. While you may work hard to group, reuse, and repurpose, it can be sad when your efforts
seem fruitless because of your neighbors’ carelessness. 36 However, using these ways can help
encourage your neighbors to take action:
*Make recycling easy: add bins(垃圾桶) to your area.
The best way to get people to do something is to make it easy for them. Place recycling bins next to
trash cans in busy areas such as parks and parking lots. Try using bins with different colors. 37
Check with your local disposal service; they may offer free bins to your neighbors and regular pickup
services.
* 38Organize an activity to bring the community together while teaching them about the advantages of
recycling. Explain how developing these small habits can help our planet. Try creating clear rules
explaining local rules to homes and businesses. This can help neighbors who are unsure about which
materials they can recycle or how to group them properly.
*Reward(奖励) people who recycle.
To encourage participation( 参 与 ), offer rewards for recycling efforts. Organize a friendly
competition between neighborhoods or streets, and record recycling rates over a month. Encourage teams
to collect lights, plastic bottles, glass bottles, and jars. To increase the competition, create a leaderboard
that’s updated weekly and shown to the community. 39
*Start small, make a big difference. 40 Start with one or two of these ideas and build from
there. As more people join, your community’s influence will grow. Together, we can create cleaner
neighborhoods and a healthier planet.
A.Educate your community.
B.Remember, changing habits takes time.
C.Reward the area with the most people recycling.
D.A good habit can lead to a more successful life.
E.This can keep participants encouraged throughout the month.
F.It helps your neighbors quickly know where to put different wastes.
G.Getting your community to understand why we should recycle isn’t simple.
