B A wearable health monitor developed by Washington State University researchers can reliably measure levels of important biochemicals in sweat during physical exercise. The 3D- printed monitor could someday provide a simple and non- invasive (无创的) way to track health conditions and diagnose common diseases, such as diabetes, kidney disease or heart disease. Reporting in the journal, ACS Sensors, the researchers were able to accurately monitor the levels of volunteers’ glucose (葡萄糖) and uric acid (尿酸). “Diabetes is a major problem worldwide,” said Chuchu Chen, the first author of the paper. “I think 3D printing can make a difference to the healthcare fields, and I wanted to see if we can combine 3D printing with disease detection methods to create a device like this.” For their new health monitor, the researchers used 3D printing to make the health monitors in a unique, one- step manufacturing process. The researchers used a single- atom catalyst and enzymatic reactions to enhance the signal and measure low levels of the biomarkers. Three biosensors on the monitor change color to indicate the specific biochemical levels. Sweat contains many important chemicals that can indicate health conditions, but, unlike blood sampling, it’s 学科网(北京)股份有限公司non- invasive. Levels of uric acid in sweat can indicate the risk of developing kidney disease or heart disease. Glucose levels are used to monitor diabetes. But the amount of these chemicals in sweat is tiny and can be hard to measure, the researchers noted. While other sweat sensors (传感器) have been developed, they are complex and need specialized equipment and expertise to make. When the researchers compared the new monitors on volunteers’ arms to lab results, they found that their monitor was accurately and reliably measuring the concentration of the chemicals. The researchers are now working to further improve the device design and validation. They are also hoping to commercialize the technology. 24. What does Chuchu Chen stress? A.The application of 3D printing in real life. B.The way to make 3D printing develop quickly. C.The integration of 3D printing and medical technology. D.The change in people’s health caused by 3D printing. 25. What can we know about sweat from the text? A.The chemicals in it can reflect health conditions. B.Using it to monitor different diseases is invasive. C.It contains some chemicals that cause heart disease. D.The researchers find it difficult to measure its amount. 26. What is the advantage of the health monitor over other sweat sensors? A.It’s easier to operate. B.It’s more specialized. C.It’s more commonly used. D.It’s more environmentally friendly. 27. Which can be a suitable title for the text? A.3D printing is used to monitor diseases B.Sweat can help treat some common diseases C.Blood sampling isn’t as accurate as sweat monitoring D.A sweat health monitor measures levels of disease markers C The state of Maine is famous for its delicious wild blueberries. The blueberries grow well on barren mountaintops, in abandoned fields, along rural roadsides or where most other plants don’t. They are also decidedly native as they have been growing in this landscape for more than10,000 years. At David Dickey’s small farm, farmers harvest blueberries, packing a burst of sweetness into tiny purple package. They’re also harvesting sunshine. A grid (格子) of solar panels stands a few feet above four hectares (10 acres) of the land. The electricity these generate powers a few hundred nearby homes. Under and around these panels are extending fields of the low, thick blueberry bushes. Solar panels generate electric power without sending out the carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases that fossil fuels release as they’re burned. Fixing solar panels on farms helps solve another major problem: finding the space to collect enough sunlight to produce enough supply of electricity. This concept is called “Agrivoltaics”. The word combines “agriculture” with “photovoltaics (光伏)”. Photovoltaic materials — such as solar panels — generate electric current from sunlight. Growing crops requires hard work — often generating only a low income. A grivoltaic projects can benefit farmers by giving them a second crop: electric power. Also, farmers can pick up some extra cash by renting their land to power companies that will fix their own solar panel son the site. At the University of Maine in Orono, Dr. Calderwood focuses on finding ways to grow better berries. Her work includes studying how the bushes can be planted to produce delicious berries despite the shade cast by the solar panels at Dickey’s farm. “Although the idea behind A grivoltaics has been around for decades, it’s really just exploded over the last few years. Around the world, farmers and solar companies are working together to combine farming with the production of electricity,” Calderwood says. 28. How is the second paragraph developed? A.By giving descriptions. B.By making predictions. C.By making comparisons. D.By offering suggestions. 29. How do the solar panels make a difference in generating electricity? A.They take up less space. B.They produce no pollution. C.They block out direct sunlight. D.They avoid the waste of electricity. 30. What is the main advantage of Agrivoltaic projects? A.Increased agricultural productivity. B.Reduction in greenhouse gas emissions. C.Additional source of income for farmers. D.Promotion of sustainable farming practices. 31. What can we learn about Agrivoltaic projects? A.They are a creative idea. B.They are in a growing trend. C.They are only useful to farmers. D.They are a traditional farming. Here’s a quick quiz. Person A does a favor for you. Person B asks you to do a favor for him. Who do you tend to like more? Surprisingly, the answer is Person B.This quirk (怪癖) of human nature is known as the Ben Franklin Effect. Benjamin Franklin came across the phenomenon in 1736 when serving as a clerk to the Pennsylvania Assembly. A powerful member didn’t care for Franklin and threatened to make life miserable for him. What to do? Instead of winning him over with sweet talk, Franklin asked if he could borrow a rare and valuable book the man owned. This request altered the man’s attitude and paved the way for their friendship. Franklin’s takeaway: “He that has once done you a kindness will be ready to do you another, than he whom you yourself have obliged.” Several studies have confirmed this. But how can we explain the Ben Franklin Effect? Some psychologists refer to cognitive dissonance (失调). It’s difficult to hold two contradictory thoughts at the same time. It makes us uncomfortable. We resolve this tension by changing our mind. “I don’t like Joe, but I am doing him a favor,” we might think. “So maybe I do like him.” While cognitive dissonance explains a lot, it alone doesn’t explain the Ben Franklin Effect. One 2015 study found that it was, rather, the affiliative (亲和的) motive that the requests convey. That is, we humans want to maintain good relations with other humans, and one way to achieve this is by doing favors for others. This explains a lot about altruistic behavior. We like being useful and, by extension, we like those who give us the opportunity to do so. It’s in our genes. Yet there is much we still don’t know about the Ben Franklin Effect. Does it apply equally across cultures? Is there a point beyond which asking a favor makes you less, not more likable? Asking to borrow a book is one thing; asking to borrow a car is another. 32. Why does the author mention Benjamin Franklin’s experience? A.To illustrate a dilemma in making choices. B.To suggest a way of striking up friendships. C.To stress the importance of strategic requests. D.To introduce the origin of the Ben Franklin Effect. 33. What is a reason for people’s tendency to like those asking for favors? A.Reducing the tension caused by social contact. B.Increasing the chance of getting help in return. C.Avoiding the discomfort from conflicting thoughts. D.Establishing a cooperative community of shared trust. 34. What does the underlined word “altruistic” probably mean in paragraph 4? A.Selfless. B.Impolite. C.Aggressive. D.Responsible. 35. What does the author think of the Ben Franklin Effect? A.It makes little sense. B.It applies to most cultures. C.It has situational limitations. D.It has great practical significance. They say scuba diving opens up a world of possibilities, from learning new skills to exploring places beyond your imagination. A few years ago, I was lucky enough to experience all these on a reef dive at the Gili Islands in Indonesia. After my first dive, I realized that it has far more in common with yoga than it does with extreme sports. On land, switching off your brain can be a struggle. Breathing is something that just happens without thinking. When you’re diving, it’s a totally different ball game. 36 You’re suddenly aware of how your movements connect with each intake of breath. It’s hard to feel distracted (分神的) when diving. Nature is putting on such a show-stopping performance that your attention is fully absorbed. You’re right there on the stage, in the moment. 37 Something I hadn’t really considered before my first scuba dive was just how human-centric our lives are on land. Everything seems to go around the human experience. But when you dive, it’s a different story entirely. 38 A guest in someone else’s home. 39 Almost everything in front of you is alive and part of a delicate ecosystem of life. Here, clownfish weave among the anemones (海葵) and parrotfish feed on their favorite coral (珊瑚). 40 Nothing is ours to take or touch. Suddenly, your own world feels rather tiny and you realize you’re just part of the world. A.All of a sudden, you’re the outsider. B.Everything here has its place and purpose. C.This is what living in the present feels like. D.Rarely do you take the time to stop and just “be”. E.Exploring the undersea world is a humbling experience. F.Your breathing becomes slow, purposeful and rhythmic. G.Your heart races, your breath quickens and logical thinking goes out. Tired and sleepy, we got off the night train, stepping foot on new territory: Berlin. A citizen of the Republic of Venice, Polo 58 (grow) up in a family where both his father Niccolo and uncle Maffeo were merchants. Even before Marco was born, the brothers had travelled 59 (extensive), setting up trading posts in Constantinople, Sudak, Crimea, and the western part of the Mongolian Empire. They even visited China. Later, the Polo brother’s embarked on a new journey, and this time they brought Marco 60 them. This trip, which would end up 61 (take) 24 years since they stayed for very long in China, is the one recorded by Marco Polo in his book. It has been assumed that 62 Polos travelled along the Northern Silk Road, although the 63 (possible) of a southern route has also been advanced by some scholars. The Polos weren’t the first Europeans to visit China, 64 Marco Polo was the first European to published account of it, and his book was sure 65 (become) very important for future generations of explorers. Dear Bruce, I am writing to share my travel experience during the summer vacation with you.__________________ Yours sincerely, Li Hua “We’ve got this,” my friend Alex laughed loudly as we stepped off the library steps. “Absolutely, we’ve got this,” I agreed, performing a little victory dance on the sidewalk once the library door had closed behind us. We had both been nominated (提名) for the Youth Excellence Program, an honor and a chance almost every student was crazy about. That weekend, Alex and I sat in my living room, carefully completing the program application. We each aimed to show we had all qualities the program valued: academic excellence, leadership, community service, integrity, and civic responsibility. I detailed my devotion to challenging courses, while Alex described his volunteer work at the local food bank. We left no stone unturned, fully confident in our joint success. The following day, we submitted our applications to the teacher hopefully. Weeks passed. Then one day, I received a letter about the project. I rushed out of the classroom and opened it. I felt a stab of sadness right in my heart: my name was not on the list. At that very moment, I saw Alex came jogging over, waving his letter with a beaming smile. It was clear he had news that contrasted with my own. Without hesitation, I turned away to avoid him. I knew he was eager to share his joy. Perhaps, he even had planned to celebrate the good news together with me. But I just couldn’t face it: they picked him but refused me. How could fate be so unjust? Anger and despair just blinded me. I hope to hear about your summer adventures too! Yours sincerely, Li Hua 范文: From that day on, I didn’t talk to Alex. But I looked at him coldly, “Leave me alone.” I knew I was hurting him, but the sting of rejection was too fresh, and I couldn’t find the words to 学科网(北京)股份有限公司bridge the gap. Finally, Mom talked with me, saying Alex wasn’t the one to blame. She reminded me that success and failure were parts of life’s journey. “You should have congratulated your friend on this instead of feeling pitiful for yourself,” she said seriously. Seized by guilt, I followed mom’s advice and left Alex a note, expressing my feelings—not as an apology, but as a step towards healing and rebuilding our bond. It was time to face my fears and embrace the reality that our friendship could weather this storm.
