Dear Sherlock,
As the chairman of Student Union, I am, with heartfelt sincerity(真诚地), writing to invite you to
deliver a speech concerning daily exercise.
The speech is scheduled at 5:00 p. m. this Friday in the stadium. The reason why we choose this
theme is, initially, students’ insufficient awareness of exercise in daily life. Burdened with loads of
schoolwork, seldom do students spare time for doing exercise(部分倒装). Additionally, taking into
account(考虑) the national appealing(呼吁) to cultivate(培养) all-round(全面发展的)
students, practicing exercise enables us to be qualified graduates.
Your accepting the invitation would be highly appreciated, and you, a sport enthusiast, can
undoubtedly juice the speech up(给演讲增色) and make it reach a wider audience.
Yours sincerely,
Li Hua

Gradually, Emily's confidence grew with Mr. Jenkins’ help. Each class Mr. Jenkins taught her
turned into an adventure of discovery, where numbers and shapes combined to create a symphony(交响
乐) of logic and imagination magically. She started to admire the elegance and harmony in variables
(变量) and concepts, just as she would appreciate the balance in her paintings. Tolerant and firm, she
began to tackle(解决) her homework with a newfound enthusiasm, keen to unveil(揭开) the
mysteries hidden in it. Not only was she now counting down(倒数) the minutes until their next
session, but her homework errors had witnessed an incredibly significant drop. Shortly, she completed
the mid-term exams, with the results to be revealed sooner.
Emily's heart raced when the results day arrived. Her stomach was a mix of butterflies(紧张)
and anticipation, a feeling she had never experienced for a math test before. Her fingers were icy as she
tightly grasped for her report card, heart pounding in throat. However, the moment she scanned the score,
what caught her eye was a bold(粗体) “A” in red ink. It was more than just a letter; it was a symbol
of her transformation, a reward to the hours of hard work and the belief Mr. Jenkins had placed in her.
Finally, Emily felt a total relief with a sweet peace flooding into her. Maths was just her cup of tea(爱
好) and no limits were impossible to break through with a strong will and proper guidance.1.B【原文】W: Excuse me. I need to get that suitcase off the luggage holder. I’m getting off the train at
the next station.
M: Me, too. Let me get it off for you, Madam.
W: It’s so kind of you.
M: My pleasure.
2.C【原文】M: How do you like the lecture this morning?
W: It’s well-prepared but I can’t see anything novel.
M: You can say that again. It’s not suitable for such an important conference.
3.A【原文】W: Please leave the curtain open to let in some sunlight and fresh air.
M: Are you kidding? Where is the sunlight? I can only see clouds.
W: Believe me. It will clear up in an hour or two.
4.A【原文】M: Shall we order a takeout supper?
W: I’m not hungry and I don’t feel like eating anything.
M: Maybe our lunch was too rich. How about us skipping supper together?
W: No problem.
5.B【原文】M: Sarah, please return this file to Paul and ask him to improve it according to my notes.

【原文】W: Mr. Muller, I would be curious to know what gave you the idea of starting a country music
restaurant.M: Actually, my family has been in the restaurant business ever since my great-grandfather. He cooked
great meals, which made his restaurant very popular. But it didn’t have much to do with music until my
father’s days, who often invited local artists to sing in the restaurant. That practice was common in
restaurants at that time and the music style was usually Jazz. Some diners would leave their seats and join
the artists in singing songs?
W: Was it you who changed the style of the music?
M: You said it. Once, I invited Julie to sing in the restaurant and her song, Blowing in the Wind, touched
me so deeply that I decided to make country music a special part of my restaurant.
W: Do you mean Julie Adams?
M: Yes. She is now famous, but at that time, she was just a college student, singing to pay for her
education.

【原文】M: Hello, Joan.
W: Hello, Mike. I think I need your help.
M: What’s the matter?
W: The printer in my office just won’t work. My computer report searching for printer all the time.
M: Is the Wi-Fi working in your office?
W: Yes. I can see the Wi-Fi on my phone.
M: How about your computer?
W: Let me have a look. Eh… it’s connected, too.
M: In that case you should try to reconnect the printer to the Wi-Fi.
W: I guess so, but how?
M: I can’t be there in person for you. Right now, I am on a business trip. I will send you a file of
instructions. You just need to follow the instructions to solve the problem. It’s not complex.
W: What if I still can’t make it.
M: Phone the technology department. Luke is in the office today.

【原文】W: Are you planning a trip around the world for your gap year?
M: It can’t be called a trip around the world. I just want to take a trip to South America. Do you have anysuggestions?
W: I think the best suggestion should be for you to stay in hostels.
M: I know that is a great way to save money.
W: It surely is. Staying in a hostel is a lot cheaper than staying in a hotel. When I visited Peru, I stayed in
a hostel in Ica for $3.5 a night! It was a 24-bed dormitory room. But it was much cheaper than the typical
hotels there, which cost anywhere from 15 to $100.
M: I like the price, but I don’t know what it will be like to share a room with 23 people.
W: Some people may not like that. But to me, it is another reason I choose to stay in hostels. In my
previous experiences, I have met quite several like-minded travelers.
M: Is that the best part of hostels for you?
W: To me, the best part is that most hostels are equipped with a full kitchen, allowing me to cook my
own meals. And if you are lucky, you might even meet other travelers that are willing to share the meal
they have made.
