He then took the kid fishing every weekend. Gradually he took groups of kids out to fish. I was about to read a book when I heard an elderly man speak to a lady. “This library will soon become a cafe. Everyone is reading with electronic devices,” he said. Hearing this, I wanted to shout, “I still read library books!” But my words stuck in my throat and I found teenagers around me were talking to friends or staring at their phones. Reading online feels robotic to me. It’s like I stare at a screen and click “next” for the following page to appear until the very end of the e-book, and at the end of all of that, I just think, “That’s it?” But when I read a printed book, it’s like I’m holding on to the characters. I can imagine the plot better, as I can picture the scenes of each moment in my head with more accuracy and imagination. Besides, some online books miss components that are in the printed novels. For instance, the physical copy of a fantasy novel I have read contains a map, but the e-book version does not. That is an injustice to e-book users; after reading and understanding the map, the story made a lot more sense for me, in terms of the setting and plot. And personally, physically turning to the next page is better than clicking “next”. When reading online, I sometimes worry that I click “next” too quickly. It feels more like a race; I want to finish it because the pages just keep making that “flipping” sound and I wonder how long the book really is. Some printed books have a special smell that makes the novel feel special to me. It’s hard to describe but I’m sure I’m not the only one that thinks so. I know I cannot convince every teen to switch from the digital book to the printed one, but maybe my writing about the difference will at least get some of them to think about it. 24.Why will the library be replaced by a cafe? A.Few people head for it. B.It lacks good management. C.Few people read its books. D.It holds little attraction for the youth. 25.Why does the author prefer printed books according to paragraph 2? A.They include additional contents. B.They provide a strong connection to the characters. C.They have a special pleasant smell. D.They can improve readers’ imagination. 26.What is the author’s purpose of writing this text? A.To inspire teenagers’ interest in reading.B.To show advantages of printed books. C.To reduce the impact of electronic devices. D.To encourage teens to change the reading medium. 根据第一段“Everyone is reading with electronic devices(每个人都在用电子设备阅读)”以 及“But my words stuck in my throat and I found teenagers around me were talking to friends or staring at their phones.(但我的话哽在喉咙里,我发现我周围的青少年正在和朋友聊天或盯着他们的手机看)”可知,图书馆 要被咖啡厅取代是因为很少有人读图书馆的书。故选C项。 25. 根据第二段“But when I read a printed book, it’s like I’m holding on to the characters. I can imagine the plot better, as I can picture the scenes of each moment in my head with more accuracy and imagination. (但当我读纸质书的时候,就好像我紧紧抓住了书中的人物。我可以更好地想象情节,因为我可以更准确、 更有想象力地在脑海中描绘每一刻的场景)”可知,作者更喜欢印刷书籍是因为他们给人留下鲜活的印象。 故选B项。 26.推理判断题。根据最后一段“I know I cannot convince every teen to switch from the digital book to the printed one, but maybe my writing about the difference will at least get some of them to think about it.(我知道我无 法说服每一个青少年从电子书转向纸质书,但也许我写的关于区别的文章至少会让他们中的一些人思考这 个问题)”可推知,作者写作的目的是鼓励青少年改变阅读媒介。故选D项。 C We’ve all been there: in a lift, in line at the bank or on an airplane, surrounded by people who are, like us, deeply focused on their smartphones or, worse, struggling with the uncomfortable silence. What’s the problem? It’s possible that along with the rapid development of society, we all focus on our phone and desktop, and therefore it results in our compromised conversational intelligence. However, it’s more likely that none of us start a conversation because it’s awkward and challenging, or we think it’s annoying and unnecessary. But the next time you find yourself among strangers, consider that small talk is worth the trouble. Experts say it’s an invaluable social practice that results in big benefits. Dismissing small talk as unimportant is easy, but we can’t forget that deep relationships wouldn’t even exist if it weren’t for small conversation. “Small talk is the grease (润滑剂) for social communication,” says Bernardo Carducci, director of the Shyness Research Institute at Indiana University Southeast. “Almost every great love story and each big business deal begins with small talk,” he explains. “The key to successful small talk is learning how to connect with others, not just communicate with them.” In a 2014 study, Elizabeth Dunn, associate professor of psychology at UBC, invited people on their way into a coffee shop. One group was asked to seek out an interaction with its waiter; the other, to speak only when necessary. The results showed that those who chatted with their server reported significantly higher positive更多全科试卷及资料,请关注公众号:高中试卷君 feelings and a better coffee shop experience. “It’s not that talking to the waiter is better than talking to your husband,” says Dunn. “But interactions with peripheral (边缘的) members of our social network matter for our well-being also.” Dunn believes that people who reach out to strangers feel a significantly greater sense of belonging, a bond with others. Carducci believes developing such a sense of belonging starts with small talk. “Small talk is the basis of good manners,” he says. 27.What does the underlined word “compromised” in paragraph 2 mean? A.Weakened. B.Enhanced. C.Secret. D.Natural. 28.What is important for successful small talk according to Carducci? A.Showing good manners. B.Relating to other people. C.Focusing on a topic. D.Making business deals. 29.What can we learn about small talk from the coffee shop study? A.It made the coffee taste better. B.It reduced waiting time in line. C.It improved people’s mood and experience. D.It helped them bond with the server deeply. 30.What is the text mainly about? A.Elevator manners. B.The importance of small talk. C.Smartphones and social media. D.Developing deep relationships. 根据第二段的“What’s the problem? It’s possible that along with the rapid development of society, we all focus on our phone and desktop, and therefore it results in our compromised conversational intelligence. However, it’s more likely that none of us start a conversation because it’s awkward and challenging, or we think it’s annoying and unnecessary. (有什么问题吗?有可能随着社会的快速发展,我们都把注意力集中 在手机和电脑上,因此导致我们的谈话能力……。然而,更有可能的是,我们都不交谈了,因为这很尴尬, 很有挑战性,或者我们认为这很烦人,没有必要。)”可知,人们的注意力集中在自己的手机和电脑上,不 愿意与他人交流,因此可推知人们的谈话能力会有所“减弱”。由此可知,画线词与A 项意思相近。故选 A。 28. 根据第三段的“The key to successful small talk is learning how to connect with others, not just communicate with them.(成功闲聊的关键是学会如何与他人建立联系,而不仅仅是与他们交流。)” 根据第四段的“The results showed that those who chatted with their server reported significantly higher positive feelings and a better coffee shop experience.(结果显示,那些与服务员聊天的人表 现出明显更高的积极情绪和更好的咖啡馆体验。)” 通读全文可知,根据第二段的“But the next time you find yourself among strangers, consider that small talk is worth the trouble. Experts say it’s an invaluable social practice that results in big benefits. (但下次当你发现自己身处陌生人之中时,考虑一下,闲聊是值得的。专家表示,这是一种宝贵的社会实践,更多全科试卷及资料,请关注公众号:高中试卷君 会带来很大的好处。)”和第四段的“The results showed that those who chatted with their server reported significantly higher positive feelings and a better coffee shop experience.(结果显示,那些与服务员聊天的人表 现出明显更高的积极情绪和更好的咖啡馆体验。)”以及最后一段的“Dunn believes that people who reach out to strangers feel a significantly greater sense of belonging, a bond with others. Carducci believes developing such a sense of belonging starts with small talk. “Small talk is the basis of good manners,” he says.(邓恩认为,与陌生人 接触的人会有更强烈的归属感,与他人建立联系。卡杜奇认为,培养这种归属感始于闲聊。“闲聊是良好 举止的基础,”他说。)”可知,本文主要介绍了闲聊给人们生活带来的积极影响,即闲聊的重要性。故选 B。 D If there was an app claiming to improve your memory, would you be willing to try it? It’s hard to resist the idea of having a better memory. In response to this perceived need, the brain training industry has grown rapidly, offering a wide range of accessible and affordable mental exercises through smartphone and tablet apps. Many researchers have found evidence suggesting that well-designed exercises can improve mental abilities and lead to better scores on IQ tests. They compare the brain to muscles, suggesting that targeted repetition of memory exercises can strengthen and condition our memory processes, similar to how athletes engage in strength and conditioning by repeatedly exercising specific muscle groups. In contrast to everyday activities like solving a complex puzzle, memory training apps are specifically designed to provide a more challenging workout for the brain. These apps typically involve tasks that require tracking a large number of objects while being distracted (使分心) by a secondary task, such as mental calculations or exploring a game’s landscape. If this brain training proves effective, it could be beneficial for individuals with brain-related disabilities or those recovering from conditions like cancer. Critics, though, argue that while the concept is appealing, the overall evidence fails to demonstrate significant improvement in core brain processes. Additionally, despite the claims made by many apps and brain training companies, scientists have yet to identify the key factors that make an intervention truly effective or determine the best approaches to address the diverse needs of individuals seeking help. While the question is still open to debate, there is evidence suggesting that short-term working memory training can benefit high-functioning individuals. However, it’s important to note that brain training, like diet and exercise, is unlikely to have identical effects on every individual. 31.In what way is the brain similar to muscles according to many researchers? A.In testing results. B.In work processes. C.In bodily functions. D.In training methods. 32.What is the main feature of the typical tasks in memory training apps? A.Simple. B.Effective. C.Demanding. D.What does the Brain Training Industry Bring? 根据第二段“They compare the brain to muscles, suggesting that targeted repetition of memory exercises can strengthen and condition our memory processes, similar to how athletes engage in strength and conditioning by repeatedly exercising specific muscle groups.”(他们将大脑与肌肉进行比较,表明有针对 性的重复记忆练习可以加强和调节我们的记忆过程,类似于运动员通过反复锻炼特定肌肉群来增强力量和 调节能力)可知,许多研究者认为大脑类似于肌肉,也可以通过重复的练习来得到加强和调节,即训练方 法相似,故选D。 32. 根据第三段“In contrast to everyday activities like solving a complex puzzle, memory training apps are specifically designed to provide a more challenging workout for the brain. These apps typically involve tasks that require tracking a large number of objects while being distracted by a secondary task, such as mental calculations or exploring a game’s landscape.”(与解决复杂谜题等日常活动不同,记忆训练应用程序 是专门为大脑提供更具挑战性的锻炼而设计的。 根据第四段“Critics, though, argue that while the concept is appealing, the overall evidence fails to demonstrate significant improvement in core brain processes. We’ve all been there—you’ve sent a message and it’s marked “read”, but you haven’t heard anything back. What’s the deal? While being left on read (已读不回) can be confusing, it’s also pretty common. 35 Here are a few tips. Expect the best. Remind yourself that the person is probably just busy. If you get your mind off any notifications, you’ll be able to brainstorm new ways to spend your time. A.Put your phone away. B.Fix your attention closely on text responses. C.Give them a little space so they have a chance to reply. D.They want to give you a longer response but can’t right now. E.Ask yourself why being left on “read” frustrates or confuses you. F.You can keep the situation from bothering you until you hear back. G.You might feel relieved when you find something that is easy to misread. 35.根据后文“Here are a few tips.(这里有一些建议)”以及前文“it’s also pretty common.(这种情况很常 见)”可知,空处应该是承上启下说明可以应用这些建议避免被影响,所以 F 项“You can keep the situation from bothering you until you hear back.(你可以避免这种情况困扰你)”符合文意。故选F项。 36.根据上文“Here are a few other reasons for a delayed response.(以下是延迟响应的其他一些原因。)”以及 下文“They put their phone away to focus on work or school. They accidentally forgot to reply. Maybe they thought about what they wanted to say but didn’t actually text it. 可知,空处是延迟响应的可 能原因,与D项“They want to give you a longer response but can’t right now. 37.根据前文“Resist the temptation to double- text.(不要信息轰炸对方)”以及后文“If you send a lot of follow- up texts, it’ll be hard for them to keep up and they might get stressed. Leave them with just one text to catch up on—the other person will probably appreciate your patience.(如果你发了很多后续短信,他们很难跟上, 他们可能会感到压力。 38.根据段首句“Read over your previous messages. (阅读你之前的信息)”,及上文“See if there are any更多全科试卷及资料,请关注公众号:高中试卷君 confusing texts that you need to clarify. It’s okay if you review your message again and notice that it might have been a little unclear—it happens! 可知,再次查看信息可能会发现一些被 误读的东西,与G项“You might feel relieved when you find something that is easy to misread.(可能会感到宽 慰,当你发现了一些容易被误读的东西)”上下文一致,符合文意。故选G项。 39.根据下句“Keep it out of sight and get some peace of mind.(把它放在你看不到的地方,让你的内心平静 下来)”以及后文“Don’t let it upset or confuse you. If you get your mind off any notifications, you’ll be able to brainstorm new ways to spend your time.(不要让它困扰或迷惑你。如果你不去想任何通知,你就能头脑风暴 出新的打发时间的方法)”可知,本段主题是把手机放到一边,眼不见,心不烦。与其纠结为什么会被“已 读不回”,不如放下手机,做些更有意义的事。所以 A项“Put your phone away.(把手机收起来)”起到概括 作用,符合文意。故选A项。 Gestures refer to the communication where visible bodily actions are used to communicate important messages. They include movement of hands, face, or other parts of the body. Gestures benefit our lives a lot. Take language learning. In some languages, certain syllables (音节) within words are pronounced with markedly more weight than others, called lexical stress. Languages such as English commonly feature lexical stress. For example, the word “accent” involves more emphasis on the first syllable, “ac”, than the second, “cent”. Native speakers of Chinese, however, don’t use lexical stress and therefore find it difficult to learn languages that feature it. Making any hand gesture could help learners recognize lexical stress, which has been proved by Xing Tian’s team. They selected 124 native Chinese speakers, who watched videos of people performing hand movements that were synced(同步的) to recordings of the same English words. In addition, they also found when more pronounced gestures matched the stressed syllable, the participants were particularly good at identifying it. The research involved several experiments, which makes it difficult to combine the results. Nevertheless, Tian estimates that the use of gestures helped identify lexical stress between 10 and 15 percent more accurately compared with no gestures at all, and how much help depends on the nature of gestures. A follow-up study conducted by another team exposed the same Chinese speakers to Russian words and got similar results. “Our findings highlight the functional role of gestures in enhancing speech learning, suggesting practical strategies for language teaching and learning,” the researchers write in their paper. The benefits of gestures extend far beyond teaching and learning. Since gestures are deeply integrated into our daily lives, they deserve more of our attention. 40.What do gestures mean? 41.What did Xing Tian’s team find in their study? 42.Please decide which part is false in the following statement, then underline it and explain why. Gestures help learn lexical stress, but the degree to which they help depends on the complexity of the lexical stress. 43.Besides what is mentioned in the passage, how do gestures benefit you in your life? (In about 40words) 【答案】40.Gestures refer to the communication where visible bodily actions are used to communicate important messages. 41.Any hand gesture could help learners recognize lexical stress. Besides, when more pronounced gestures matched the stressed syllable, the participants were particularly good at identifying it. 42.Gestures help learn lexical stress, but the degree to which they help depends on the complexity of the lexical stress. Gestures help learn lexical stress, but how much help depends on the nature of gestures. 43.Gestures make it easy for me to convey feelings and better connect with others. For example, when I want to express excitement, waving my hands or nodding vigorously can help me communicate the emotion effectively. That also allows me to build stronger relationships with others. 根据第一段“Gestures refer to the communication where visible bodily actions are used to communicate important messages.(手势指的是用可见的身体动作来传达重要信息的交流方式)”可知,手势指 的是用可见的身体动作来传达重要信息的交流方式。故填 Gestures refer to the communication where visible bodily actions are used to communicate important messages. 41. 根据第三段“Making any hand gesture could help learners recognize lexical stress, which has been proved by Xing Tian’s team.(做任何手势都可以帮助学习者识别词汇重音,Xing Tian的团队已经证 明了这一点)”及“In addition, they also found when more pronounced gestures matched the stressed syllable, the participants were particularly good at identifying it.(此外,他们还发现,当更明显的手势与重读音节相匹配时, 参与者特别擅长识别它)”可知,Xing Tian的团队发现:任何手势都可以帮助学习者识别词汇重音。 Any hand gesture could help learners recognize lexical stress. Besides, when more pronounced gestures matched the stressed syllable, the participants were particularly good at identifying it. 42. 根据第四段“Tian estimates that the use of gestures helped identify lexical stress between 10 and 15 percent more accurately compared with no gestures at all, and how much help depends on the nature of gestures.(Tian教授估计,与完全不使用手势相比,使用手势识别单词重音的准确率提高了 10%到15%,而 有多大的帮助取决于手势的性质)”可知,第一句中最后of the lexical stress错误,手势有助于学习单词重音, 但有多大的帮助取决于“手势的性质(the nature of gestures)”,而不是“词汇重音(the lexical stress)”。故填Gestures help learn lexical stress, but the degree to which they help depends on the complexity of the lexical stress./Gestures help learn lexical stress, but how much help depends on the nature of gestures. 43. 根据文章第一段“Take language learning.(以学习为例)”及最后一段“The benefits of更多全科试卷及资料,请关注公众号:高中试卷君 gestures extend far beyond teaching and learning. Since gestures are deeply integrated into our daily lives, they deserve more of our attention.(手势的好处远远超出了教和学。由于手势深深地融入了我们的日常生活,它们 值得我们更多的关注)”并结合全文可知,文章介绍了什么是手势语,手势语在教与学中的重要性,此外, 还可以从“手势语可以帮助我们更好的表达情感,与他人交流”方面进行举例说明,例如,当我想表达兴 奋时,大力挥手或点头可以帮助我有效地传达情绪。这也让我与他人建立了更牢固的关系。故填 Gestures make it easy for me to convey feelings and better connect with others. For example, when I want to express excitement, waving my hands or nodding vigorously can help me communicate the emotion effectively. That also allows me to build stronger relationships with others. Dear James, ____________________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________________________________ Yours, Li Hua 【答案】Dear James, I’m writing to extend my sincere gratitude for your assistance to me. Hadn’t it been for your help, I wouldn’t have achieved such a wonderful result in the English speech contest. To be honest, I didn’t have enough confidence in myself at first. So I hesitated about whether to sign in the contest or not. It was you who encouraged me to step out of my comfort zone and face the challenge. I still remember the days we spent together when you corrected my speech draft and pronunciation over and over again. At last I was overjoyed to win the first place in the competition. I’m inspired to accept more challenges in the future and would like to express my heartfelt thanks again!
