Paragraph 1:
Oliver stood still to the ground and could not believe his ears. Trembling and sobbing, he collapsed
on the ground, feeling alone and betrayed. He had no choice but to cry all the way back home. Seeing his
mother, he couldn’t contain his sorrow, pouring the incident out to her, who would always be there for
him whenever he felt down. Stroking her trembling boy, the mother said gently, “Just be yourself, Son!
People will like you for who you are.” Oliver had heard the remarks a million times before, yet he never
truly got the point.Suddenly,itall clicked.
Paragraph 2:
Oliver decided to change himself after hearing his mother’s words. He bought a new schoolbag and
chose a haircut he fancied. He dropped his art class and joined the drama club. He made new friends who
liked him for who he was. He rediscovered himself. If he had not been given the chance, he might have
been too concerned with “fitting in” desperately to experience some of the “best” times of his life. It
dawned on him that despite the pain he felt that day, it was a gift they had given him, which taught him to
behimself.

Working more than 25 hours a week could be negatively affecting the intelligence of employees over
age 40, according to a study conducted on more than 6,000 workers by the researchers inAustralia. They
said that working 25 hours a week was the ideal amount of time for brain functioning. The researchers
believe that our “fluid intelligence”, or how well we process information, begins its decline around the
age of 20, while the ability to use knowledge and experience, goes down around age 30. By the time we
turn 40, our performance in memory tests and pattern recognition exercises tends to decline. The
researchers have also looked into the effect of care-taking on brain functioning in middle age. By age 40,
many employees are also taking care of children or a parent or both, creating a job on top of a job. This
life style would cause a lot of pressure and less sleep, which definitely is a negative factor for our brain
functioning. The studynoted that the effect of excessivework hours affected bothgenders equally.

根据第一段“Matt Doogue, a 34-year-old nature photographer, had been suffering

根据第二段中的“When Ifirst heard it, Ifelt instinctively irritated.”
根据第二段中的“ltall goes back to something called...change ourabilities through
effort and strategy.”
根据第三段中的“Having heard about thetended tobe milder.”
根据第四段中的“Most scientists discount the folklore of caterpillar predictions as
that was just a folklore. “It’s a wonderful story, but I dothink it was a playful trial,” says Joe Boggs”

andare good at so thatyou can feel accomplishment.”以及最后一句话“Thus, perhaps, as long as we
