My 14 yearold son, Gus, is severely allergic to peanuts and other nuts, so for years we’ve been
washing hands like surgeons, and we wipe down surfaces every time we eat out. We know the closest
emergency room and exactly what to do during a reaction. Our preparedness to guard against a
-
worst case situation felt like a win when the pandemic hit. Our everyday caution, which can be
exhausting andmake usfeelawkwardat socialevents,is nowagreat advantage.
As it turns out, COVID-19 life has had multiple advantages for food-allergy families like mine.
Stuck at home with just thefood we cook ourselves, we’ve been safe from all the land mines (地雷),
like big holiday parties with boxes of walnut cookies, or Halloween, with kids eating Snickers while
sticking their hands into shared bowls. Not to mention restaurant meals that have unexpected
ingredients.
So thepandemic gave me a giftI didn't even know I needed: I felt seen. The whole world was in
prevention mode, weighing what might have touched their groceries or takeout food. We all wash our
hands now whether our kids have food allergies or not. We all might call ahead to double-check a
restaurant’s precautions(预防措施)andwhetherthechefwearsgloves. Ididn’tfeelstrange anymore.
Of course, the limitations on regularlife will ease up soon, and families like mine will need to be
- -
on guard again. When I think aboutthe new normal, I’m fine with that post COVID 19 life. I hope we
can keep this appreciation that not everyone’s immune system functions in the same way and some
people doneed to be morecautious. Thismakes me think of the classic home-design advice: “Youneed
totakeeverythingoutof aroomtoknowwhat youwanttoputback.”We’ve takeneverything outofthe
room, and Ihope weput backempathy(同情心) , understanding andtolerance.

In the past months, humans have become quite familiar with the term “social distancing”. But it
turns out that we are not the only ones to avoid contacting our peers when our health may be at risk:
Research suggests honeybees do it, too. “ It's exciting to see that other animals are doing something
analogous,”saidDr.AlessandroCini, co-author oftheresearchat University College London.
Scientists have found that when a hive (蜂箱)of honeybeesis under threat fromthe mite (螨虫)
called Varroa destructor, which can cause the collapse of honeybee colonies, the bees will respond by
changingthewaytheyinteractwith oneanother.
By examining videos recorded inside the hives, the researchers found that when hives had mites,
foraging (觅食的) beesperformed important dances to indicatethe directionof food sources and kept
themselves away from the centre of the colonywhere young bees and the queen stayed. This may help
to keep the infection at a level that canbe controlled, limiting the amount of damage. “Foragersare one
ofthemainentranceroutesforthe mites,”saidCini.
Theteamthen carried outexperimentsin the laboratory, artificially infecting smallgroupsof about
12 young bees with the mites and comparing them to uninfected groups. This time, the team found no
increase in social distancing among infected groups which, says Cini, may reflect that it is more
—
important for foragers and young bees to keep their distance when the mites are present, and that bees
relyononeanother.
“Probably social distancing is too costly on a small scale,” hesaid. But there were differences in
grooming (梳理) behaviour: Infected bees were groomed more, inspected more, and had food shared
with themmorethanindividualsinuninfectedgroups.
Cini said the study showed the power of natural selection in the evolution of social behavior and

must be her mum. Then I saw a surprising thing. Rochelle’s mum was waving her arms round and
making shapes with her fingers, and Rochelle was doing the same with hers. It was like they were
talking to each other with their hands. Oh, could her mother be deaf? My mind was filled with
questions.

“Of course not,” Rochelle got annoyed. “Why would being deaf mean they can’t look after me?
Being deaf doesn’t mean they’re stupid,” she was almost shouting. “In fact, they’re much cleverer than

Well, good morning, ladies and gentlemen. Welcome to the Crowne Plaza business center at
Coogee Beach. I’m David Bowers, your host for the next two days, and I just want to give you
some practical information. OK. Coffee, tea, and cold drinks are served all day in the cafe which
isjustinsidethemainentrancetothehotel.Lunchisservedbetween12:00and2:30intheprivate
dining room. This evening you are invited to join the management for drinks by the swimming
pool. The General Manager usually makes a short welcome speech. I’d like to apologize for the
temperature. I’m afraid it’s a little warmer than usual in here because the air conditioning in the
business center is being repaired. However, the work will be completed before lunchtime. Right.
There are some changes to the conference program. Unfortunately, one of the main speakers has
canceled her talk and so a couple of the sessions have been canceled or rescheduled. The updated
program is being printed at the moment. OK now, before we go for breakfast, are there any
questions?
