Confucianism (儒家思想), the way of life developed by Confucius (孔子), has been followed by Chinese
people for more than two thousand years.
Five Constants (五常)——ren, yi, li, zhi, xin (仁、义、礼、智、信)—is part of Confucianism and they
help people understand how to behave towards others. They are general virtues (美德) around the world. The most
important two are ren and li.
Ren is the feeling of care and love we should have for others. Confucius explained ren could best be
understood as loving others. He is famous for teaching people “What you do not want done to yourself, do not do to
others”. It is quite similar to what is known in the West as the Golden Rule (treat others as you wish to be treated).
While the meaning of ren is easy to understand, li is a little harder to express. It can be thought of as duty
or even respect. Generally, li is the way we should connect with people in our everyday life. In Confucian writings,
discussions about li include the proper way to drink tea and how to remember ancestors (祖先). While ren is
mostly about our opinions and feelings, li is about how we express our opinions and feelings towards others and
towards the world around us.
Although Xiao isn’t one of Five Constants, it’s the basic Confucian virtue. Xiao means loving, respecting,
obeying and taking care of one’s parents in their old age. In Confucianism, xiao is important for a harmonious (和
谐的) society: Without it, the whole world would fall into a mess.

Acupuncture (针灸) is an important part of Traditional Chinese Medicine. Growing up, I’d always
considered it out of date. As we know, acupuncture treatment lasts a long period and causes a lot of pain. But my
experience made me change my mind.
Last month, I slept through a flight from London to Beijing. When I woke up, I found that I could no longer
7关注公众号:陆陆高分冲刺 ~领取:最新版“小中高考-总复习”、最新试卷下载
move my right arm and fingers. There was no pain. My arm simply didn't follow my brain’s instructions to move,
as if it was no longer mine.
One doctor said he could do nothing but give me some pills. “Rest for two months first and come back for an
examination.” I felt great fear.
In that moment of despair, my friend, an acupuncturist in Sichuan, offered to help. I started my treatment the
next day. At first, I was worried. After a few days, I could move my fingers. Two weeks later, I could use
chopsticks. Within a month, I got almost well. It was amazing.
Acupuncture first appeared in China more than 2, 000 years ago. It works by improving the smooth flow (流
