Just a few days after his 18th birthday, Beijing 2022 gold medal winner Su Yiming received a surprise
gift—a letter from Xi Jinping, President of the People’s Republic of China.
In the letter, Xi expressed his congratulations to Su and other sportsmen in ice and snow sports, for their
great achievements at the Beijing Winter Olympics, hoping what they had achieved would encourage young
Chinese to aim high.
When Su first stepped onto a snowboard at the age of four, a future as a world–class sportsman seemed
to be “a dream too big” for him. Little did he know that he would not only compete for his country but also
take home gold. With the great excitement of winning an Olympic gold medal still fresh in his mind, Su wrote a
letter to the president, telling him how lucky he felt to have made his dream come true.
Su still remembers what Xi wrote in the reply “The new era(纪元)is the time for young people to
realize their dreams.”
“I have always kept those word in my mind,” Su said.
“When I made up my mind to be a professional snowboarder, I know there is a big gap(差距)between
my performance and that of the top sportsmen in the world. But I have been working hard to realize my dream.
Now my story shows the fact that hard work will pay off.” Su said.
Su believes the sky is the limit. “Find the thing you love, believe in yourself and do your very best.
Finally, your dream will come true.”
Now Su has his strong wish to win all the competitions in his sporting field.

moon. It is also traditional to spend the night with family and loved ones admiring the moon. And for me, a
great part of the festival is looking up at the moon and thinking about all my family.
This year, it is the third time that I have been in China for the Mid-Autumn Festival. The first year, I
celebrated the festival in Guangzhou, Guangdong. And it came as a shock to me when I learned that millions
of people left the city to spend time with their families back in their hometown. The festival is a great time for
family reunion.
Last year, I spent the festival in Sanya, Hainan. There, I found many people celebrating the festival on
the beach. People enjoyed picnics, music, dancing, and a lot of fireworks near the sea.
This year, I spent the festival in Hong Kong. They mainly celebrated with lanterns and lights here, as well
as mooncakes. In Victoria Park, there was a fantastic lantern festival featuring(以……为特色) a “Rising
Moon”. I had a great time in the park. I also saw many dragon dances on the street and went to a few parties.

your ID is more convenient. You could take the subway or get on the plane with just your face alone. This is
how facial recognition(人脸识别) works.

information is used or whether it will be let out. If so, the secret information will become known to the public.

Are fingerprints(指纹)the most accurate(准确的)way to identify(识别)a person? Well, scientists
in the US say that “brain prints” could be better. They developed a technology that can identify people based
on their brain activity, and it’s surprisingly accurate.
Scientists recorded the brain activity of 50 volunteers. They scanned(扫描)the volunteers’ brains while
they looked at 500 different pictures. The pictures that were chosen can cause very different responses(反
应)to different persons. Scientists asked the volunteers about which foods and famous people that they loved
and hated, and they used that information in the study. It showed that the volunteers’ brains all responded
differently to each picture. When they saw different pictures, a special computer program was able to create a
“brain print”. These “brain prints” allowed scientists to identify each volunteer with 100 percent accuracy.
6关注公众号:陆陆高分冲刺 ~领取:最新版“小中高考-总复习”、最新试卷下载
Brain prints have better advantages than fingerprints. That’s because fingerprints can’t be changed. Once
they are stolen, others can use them for anything they want. But brain prints can be changed. That’s because
it changes when a person’s brain responds to different things, but the brain print is still special to them. It is
impossible for anyone to steal a brain-print from someone since the person could then “reset” their brain prints.
It means the person can change their brain print and make it ready to be used again.
Scientists think the brain print could one day be used in some areas to protect dangerous information.
Judge the following sentences true(T)or false(F)according to the passage.

A new robot may change the future. Developed by US company OpenAI, ChatGPT has taken the Internet
by storm, winning 100 million users since it came out in November 2022. People can ask the robot to write
stories and emails, translate languages, and answer all kinds of questions. In its own words, it is “a language
model trained in a number of Internet text to help users get human-like text.”
Compared with Siri or other chatbots (聊天机器人), ChatGPT uses a much bigger database (数据库) for
training. It also learns things by itself. For example, if it provides a wrong answer to your question, you can
tell it the right one and it will make it right. “It’s a totally different product,” computer scientist Liu Xiaoguang
from Nankai University said. “The knowledge level ChatGPT shows is similar to a university student. That’s
why it shocked the world.” Many people worry about if this robot will take the place of humans in the
future.
But one big problem with ChatGPT is that it makes mistakes or even gives unreal information. Since the
robot is trained using words from the Internet, it can also pick up on the Internet’s biases (偏见) about certain
groups. These are all things that need to be dealt with. It still has a long way to go.

With Qingming Day’s arrival on April 5th, perhaps now is a good time to talk about something we don’t
often like to talk about: death.
I once saw a big funeral parade(葬礼游行)in the street with music and dancing in New Orleans, US.
“That’s what we do here. A funeral is a celebration of a person’s life,” one of the locals told me. Years later,
my good friend, who was a funny person, died. I made a funny speech to remember him.
In Mexico, there is also a festival called the Day of the Dead, which looks at death with joy and even
humor. On the Day of the Dead, families will put candles and the favorite foods of their passed ones by their
burial places. People also walk on the streets with wooden masks(木制面具). It’s a time for black humor,
too. Toys and foods are made into skulls(骷髅)and skeleton(骨架)shapes to show a fun way of honoring

the dead.
China also has holidays that pay respect to the dead. Ghost Festival, on the 15th day of the seventh month
in the Chinese lunar(阴历的) calendar, is one of them. Like on Mexico’s Day of the Dead, people burn
offerings (祭品)and prepare meals to pay respect to the dead. When I first saw this in China, I was deeply
moved by the special way of remembering our beloved ones.
So, if you lose someone dear-terrible as it is, remember, we can still celebrate their lives.

Zhai Zhigang, Wang Yaping, Ye Guangfu have come back! After flying around Earth for six months, the
three astronauts(宇航员) of the Shenzhou XIII mission(任务) returned home on April 16. They successfully
finished the manned spaceflight(载人航天飞行). The crew(机组人员) stayed in space for six months. It is
the longest stay for Chinese astronauts in space in history. Shenzhou XIII is the fourth spacecraft to visit the
Tiangong station and the second manned ship to transport astronauts to the orbiting outpost (轨道位置). Nine
hours after leaving Tiangong, the capsule(返回舱) touched down on Earth at the Dongfeng Landing Site in
Inner Mongolia(内蒙古). The astronauts were carried out of the capsule by ground workers and placed into
chairs. They were in good condition.

Windy days are common during spring. Did you know that strong winds can even influence trains?
On May 1, 2021, strong winds in Baoding, Hebei Province, caused a foreign thing to get caught in power
lines above the railway lines, stopping some trains. Some passengers were even stuck on their trains while
traveling.
High-speed trains receive power from wires (电线) hung above the railway lines, according to Worldwide
Rails, a rail news website. As an important power source for high-speed trains, why are these lines so easy to
break in the face of wind.
The line itself is strong, but too many light things can still influence them. Kite wires are one of the
biggest problems for railway workers. If one end of a kite wire touches a power line and the other end touches
the ground, it will cause a short circuit (电路) on the line, causing a loss of power.
Other materials, such as tin foil (锡纸), can also cause problems. If they are blown onto train power lines,
they can stop trains from getting power.
In many cases, train workers have to remove foreign things from power lines themselves. The bigger the
foreign thing is, the harder it is to clean up. Bird nests are one of the most difficult.
Because of their height and strength, power lines have become a popular place for birds to make homes.
Birds carefully make their homes with branches and other materials. “They keep us busy. One day we deal
with one bird's nest and the next day they’ll build another,” a Xiamen train worker told Xiamen TV. How to
solve? To make man-made nests and put them along the lines to fool birds into thinking the place is taken.

“That night, I saw a crested ibis fly across the sky. We ran after it at once and found four adult crested
ibises and three young little birds in the woods,” Liu said.
That was the start of China’s efforts to protect the birds. There are 4,400 crested ibises in China, making
up most of the bird’s global (全球的) population of over 5,000. It has been more than 40 years since the birds
came back.
Crested ibises are one of the oldest birds in the world. There were once lots of crested ibises in Asia. But
in the 1960s, they began to disappear because of pollution and other human activities. That was why Liu and
his team set out to look for the birds. They spent three years searching in 14 provinces before making their big
finding.
Chinese scientists have worked hard to study and protect the birds since then. They have asked people
not to hunt (捕猎) the birds, cut down trees, or use fertilizers (化肥) in the places where the birds live. They
helped the birds have more babies. Some crested ibises were also sent to Japan and South Korea. All of these
countries work together to protect the birds.
100.Seven wild crested ibises were found in 1981, by Liu Yinzeng and his team.
101.The number of wild crested ibises is over 5,000 in China.
102.There weren’t any crested ibises left before scientists found them in Hanzhong.
103.People are asked to improve the living environment of crested ibises.
104.Thanks to scientists’ efforts, crested ibises have avoided the danger of dying out.

Have you ever ridden a bike in the sun? It might make you feel a little hot. However, riding on a cycle
path(骑行小路)in a sunny area could be fun. In the town of Krommenie, you can find a special cycle path
that can create energy by using the sun.
This 70-meter-long cycle path was built with solar panels(太阳能板)into it. These panels take in light
from the sun’s rays. Then they use the light to create electricity, which can power street lights. The electricity
can also go straight into the electrical grid(电网)to offer electricity for daily use. In the first year, this short
path was creating enough energy to power one house for a whole year!
This kind of path hasn’t been widely built because scientists are still doing research to test the safety of
it. They must make sure the path is strong enough for cars, buses and even trucks to drive over it. They must
also make sure the path isn’t too smooth because being too smooth could be a little dangerous. Bike riders
may fall easily while riding on it.
In another town called Eindhoven, you can also find a cycle path which uses solar energy to make art.
It’s about 1 kilometer long. The path opened in 2014. It is made up of thousands of tiny lights. The lights take
in the sun during the day and shine bright at night like stars. These lights come together like a beautiful picture.
