I was born without hands and feet. It's a rare condition. Living with that adversity(困
境)has made me who I am today.
My parents helped me develop tools to overcome my challenges. When I was two, my
dad decided that my family would stop helping me eat. He knew that one day I'd live on my
own, so l'd have to look after myself. I learned to eat with a spoon, and then with a knife
and fork. It gave me a huge sense of accomplishment.
My darkest moment came when I was 10. My family had moved from Indiana to
Georgia. In Indiana, friends treated me as normal. But in Georgia it was different. I felt very
aware of my disability. I worried l'd have to live at home forever. I felt hopeless about the
future.
My world changed when I got into sports. I started playing football. Everything came
together, when I made my first tackle(抢断球)at age 11. It was my first real achievement.
Everyone I played against was able-bodied. At first, I struggled. But I threw everything I
had into learning to be the best player. I turned my lack of height into a weapon.
Then I decided to start wrestling(排跤). I lost 35 games, but then I had a breakthrough. I
学科网(北京)股份有限公司had an amazing coach who helped me invent moves that took advantage of my strength.
My different body type was a psychological advantage-opponents didn't know how to
handle it. I eventually finished 12th in the 103-pound weight class in the champions.
I keep going in the face of difficulties. Instead of thinking about the final goal, I focus
on the immediate future. When I'm climbing a mountain, I'm down on all fours looking at
the ground. It's not going to do me any good to look up at the summit(山顶).
l just figure out how to do the best I can with the next few feet in front of me.
20. Why did the parents stop helping the writer eat?
A. To give him a sense of achievement.
B. To push him to be more independent.
C. To let him get used to the new tools.
D. To prepare him for his new life in Georgia.
21. What's the writer's attitude towards life
A. He focuses on what's directly ahead.
B. He makes little effort on his big dream.
C. He highly values the final goal.
D. He is negative about his future.
C
Eating is best when it's a social occasion. Think of the meal a family enjoys in the
evening when everyone's together after work or school, or the big get-togethers over food
at Spring Festival. But now, in the age of the internet and social media, anyone with an
internet connection can enjoy a social eating event.
Mukbang — a South Korea phrase meaning "eating broadcast"-is an unusual food
craze that's sweeping the country. This is the meal where only one person gets to eat, while
viewers watch live streams(视频直播)of hosts devouring(吞食)large quantities of food. They
leave comments on the dishes the host is tucking into(大口吃),and the host responds to
them live.
So why have people taken to this unusual new food trend? Jeff Yang, an Asian-
American cultural critic, thinks that it's down to "the loneliness of unmarried or uncoupled
South Koreans". He believes that eating on your own can be hard in a country like South
Korea, where social eating is such a long tradition. However Mukbang gives people the
学科网(北京)股份有限公司feeling that they are part of something larger, it seems.
Millions of people have trouble with food. Either they eat too much of it or too little.
Some say that the popularity of Mukbang helps people with these disorders. Those who
always eat too much and put on weight can watch Mukbang streams to satisfy their appetite.
And those who don't eat enough can build their appetite by watching delicious food being
eaten.
Even though Mukbang is a South Korean phenomenon, it's also taken off in the US.
But unlike South Koreans who sit down to enjoy noodles and kimchi(泡菜),Americans enjoy
their own native dishes. This means that viewers of US Mukbang streamers will see locals
stuffing themselves with hamburgers, fries and ice cream.
22. According to Jeff Yang, Mukbang-is-popular in South Korea mainly because
A. people there like eating alone
B. it makes people there feel less lonely
C. it helps people there build their appetite
D. it's good for those with eating disorders
23. What does the underlined part mean in the last paragraph?
A developed B.suggested C.limited D. persuaded
24. What is the passage mainly about?
A. A traditional Korean eating habit
B. How Korean talk while eating
C. A new food trend from South Korea.
D. How the Internet affects the way we eat.
D
"You can tune a piano, but you can't tuna fish." Upon reading the sentence, you're
either laughing. scratching(挠)your head or rolling your eyes. Welcome to the world of
puns(双关语).
A pun is a form or wordplay that uses similar-sounding words or phrases for comic
effect. For example, in the first sentence, the usage of "tuna" is a pun because it sounds
like "tune a". Of course you can't "tune a" fish, but it's a clever way of using words in an
unexpected way.
People generally either love puns or hate them. They have a long history throughout
学科网(北京)股份有限公司many cultures of the world including ancient Egypt, Mesopotamia and China. In the Western
world, the English playwright William Shakespeare is probably the most well-known
punster(爱用双关语的人).
"They can be a demonstration…of cleverness," Peter McGraw, the director of the
Humor Research Lab at the University of Colorado in the US, told the Atlantic. "You're
relying on a person's ability to parse(作语法分析) language, to understand the nuances
and complexities(细微差别和复杂性)of words.”
“Puns show us how subjective(主观的)meaning is and its many layers(层)can be
packed into one word," said John Pollack, author of The Pun Also Rises (the title itself a
pun based on Ernest Hemingway's The Sun Also Rises). That's why, Pollack said, "for most
of Western history, puns were a sign of high intelligence. They were an advanced tool, and
they have remained a tool till now, to pack more meaning into fewer words."
Puns are used widely throughout popular culture in TV, movies, and campaigns and
marketing. For example, the ice cream company Ben and Jerry's regularly uses puns in
their flavors, such as Americone Dream. The American animated comedy Bob's Burgers
uses puns in every episode from the title sequence, episode name and Bob's burgers of
the day-—like the Poblano Picasso Burger (a burger that uses poblano peppers named
after the artist, Pablo Picasso) or Eggers Can't Be Cheesers (an egg burger based on the
saying, Beggars can't be choosers").
You can try writing your own puns, but remember, don't write with a broken pencil
because it's pointless.
25. Why does the author include a pun at the beginning of the text?
A. To describe people's relation with puns.
B. To introduce the history of puns.
C.fo help readers understand what a pun is.
D. To explain why puns are popular with people.
26. What can we learn from John Pollack's words?
A. Puns cannot show our personal opinions.
B. All puns can be packed into one word.
C. Puns can be used to express more messages with fewer words.
D. People who used puns were less popular in western history.
学科网(北京)股份有限公司27. In the last paragraph, the author wants to ________.
A. offer different ideas B. show humorous effect
C. ask for advice D. give a warning
E
After years of observing human nature. I have decided that two qualities make the
difference between men of great achievement and men of average performance-curiosity
and discontent. I have never known an outstanding man who lacked either. And I have
never known an average man who had both. The two belong together,
Together, these deep human urges(驱策力)count for much more than ambition. Galileo
was not merely ambitious when he dropped objects of varying weights from the Leaning
Tower at Pisa and timed their fall to the ground. Like Galileo, all the great names in history
were curious and asked in discontent, "Why? Why? Why?"
Fortunately, curiosity and discontent don't have to be learned. We are born with them
and need only recapture them.
“The great man,” said Mencius(孟子),“is he who does not lose his child's heart.” Yet
most of us do lose it. We stop asking questions. We stop challenging custom. We just
follow the crowd. And the crowd desires only the calm and restful average. It encourages
us to occupy our own little corner, to avoid foolish leaps into the dark, to be satisfied.
Most of us meet new people, and new ideas, with hesitation. But once have met and
liked them, we think how terrible it would have been, had we missed the chance. We will
probably have to force ourselves to waken our curiosity and discontent and keep them
awake.
How should you start? Modestly, so as not to become discouraged. I think of one friend
who couldn't arrange flowers to satisfy herself. She was curious about how the experts did
it. Now she is one of the experts, writing books on flower arrangement.
One way to begin is to answer your own excuses. You haven't any special ability?
Most people don't; there are only a few geniuses. You haven't any time? That's good,
because it's always the people with no time who get things done. Harriet Stowe, mother of
six, wrote parts of Uncle Tom's Cabin while cooking. You're too old? Remember that Thomas
Costain was 57 when he published his first novel, and that Grandma Moses showed her
学科网(北京)股份有限公司first pictures when she was 78.
However you start, remember there is no better time to start than right now, for you'll
never be more alive than you are at this moment.
28. What does the example of Galileo tell us?
A. Mistakes are bound to lead to the finding of truth.
B. Scientists tend to be more ambitious than normal people.
C. Creativity results from challenging traditional ideas.
D. Greatness comes from a lasting desire to explore.
29.According to the passage, what can you do to recapture curiosity and discontent?
A. Meet the needs of leaders.
B. Develop a questioning mind.
C. Lead a life of adventure.
D. Follow the current fashion.
30. What could be the best title for the passage?
A. Curious Minds Make Contented Heart
B. Reflections on Human Nature
C. The Keys to Achievement
D. Never Too Late to Study
四、阅读短文,根据短文内容回答问题。(共10分,每小题2分)
When senior leaders at toymaker Lego first learned that adults were buying large
quantities of their plastic bricks and getting together to build Lego creations of their own,"
they thought it was very strange," says Smith-Meyer, "Before the late 1990s, the
company
didn't think their adult fans had value," says Smith-Meyer. "Leadership actually thought
adults were having a negative influence on the brand (品牌)."
Thanks to a handful of employees who worked to change attitudes inside the company,
gone are the days when labels on Lego boxes stated that the contents were appropriate(适合
的)only for children ages 7 to 12. Lego's newest marketing motto is "Adults Welcome."
Today Lego is the world's largest and most profitable (盈利的) toymaker. The
enthusiasm and buying power of adult fans of Lego played a major role in the company's
rise to the top. But insiders say the change from "kids only" to "adults welcome" was a
学科网(北京)股份有限公司long, uphill climb.
Lego founder Ole Kirk Kristiansen always knew he wanted to market his products
completely to kids. When Kristiansen started The Lego Group in 1932, he made wooden
toys that were intended for children. In 1946, he began making plastic toys. In 1958, he
and his son developed the first coupling bricks, the basic design of which hasn't changed
much over the years. They're even used together with bricks made today.
As the company grew over its first six decades, few imagined that its products could
attract as many adults as children. Then attitudes began to shift in the late 1990s and early
2000s when Lego posted its first-ever loss in 1998. By 2003, when it reported a $238 million
loss, the company was looking seriously at bankruptcy(破产).“Those were Lego's dark
days,” McKee says.
In the wake of the crisis, “Everyone suddenly wanted to see what designs l'd been
working on with adult fans," McKee says. In August 2005, when Lego CEO Jorgen Vig
Knudstorp attended a fan meeting, he saw for himself the sea of adult supporters." I see a
future where we will be working more closely together," he recalls. The booming partnership
would eventually produce some of the company's most popular and profitable themes,
including Lego Creator and Lego's Ambassador Network, and the company's first-ever
official fan conference: 2021's Lego Con.
"Lego used to treat their adult customers like goods; today, they treat them like
partners," McKee says.
