Jump Around
“Whee!” I could hear kids cheering all around me. It was Nicky’s birthday party and we were all having fun in
the bounce(弹跳) house. We were jumping up as high as we could, and falling down to let the soft ground catch us.
I loved ____13____ in bounce houses! I wish I could have one in my backyard.
I looked up the ____14____ of a bounce house and found it was too expensive for me. Maybe if all of my
,
friends and I put our money together we could buy it! I found them playing outside and asked.
Jake said, “That would be great!” “Yeah, I’m in,” replied Kate. “Good idea!” said Janie. The next day, we all
put our money together and found out we had enough! I talked to my parents about my idea. “That would be a lot
of fun for you and your friends. We have space in our backyard, but there are some things that I don’t think you’ve
considered(考虑) ____15____. We would have to use our electricity to blow it up every time. That would cost
more money, and it would cost money to ____16____ it if it ever got a hole(洞) in it or anything. Are you going to
pay for the electricity and repairs(修理费) yourself?” Dad asked. “You’re right. I didn’t think about that…” I
replied.
“Maybe something besides a bounce house would ____17____ better. What about a big trampoline(蹦床)?”
Mom suggested. “That’s a great idea! We can buy a trampoline!” I said excitedly. “Great! Before we allow all your
friends to use a trampoline, we need to make sure everyone will be ____18____. We need to buy safety
equipment(设备) for the trampoline, and we need to make some rules. Does that make sense?” Dad asked. “Yes,” I
said. “I’ll talk to my friends tomorrow to make sure we all agree on the ____19____.” “Perfect!” The next day, we
all sat down and came up with rules. We decided that we should not push each other, we should not jump off the
trampoline, and we should not land on our heads or necks. Our parents all looked over the rules, and wrote one
more: we should have an adult to be outside with us. That seemed fair(公平的) to us, so we ____20____ our
money together and got a trampoline!

选项。(共26分, 每小题6分)
All countries around the world have their ways to celebrate the coming year. Here are some unusual new year
traditions around the world that you must know.
,
In Canada they have an unusual new
year tradition known as the Polar Bear Swim.
Peter Pantages started this event in 1920 in
Vancouver when his friends jumped in the
freezing waters of the English Bay. Now, it is
held in many places. But why do they do
that? Many participants say that it starts off
their year right since the icy water clears
their heads—a cleansing for the mind and
soul.
At midnight, people go to the streets and
dance to drum beats to welcome the New
Year. The London Eye stands in bright colors
for the fireworks show at midnight. For
hours before the clock strikes 12, people
come together to watch shows. The London
Eye is lit up each year for New Year’s
celebrations.
On New Year’s Eve in Venice, Italy, the most
popular celebrations are setting off fireworks
in the street and the fireworks displays are
great ways to send off the old year and
welcome the new one. As the clock strikes
midnight, the boat parade(游行)begins.
People often enjoy a glass of wine on the
boat to celebrate the New Year.In Thailand, they have the January New
Year’s celebration by exchanging gifts with
friends and family members. Then they get
together to enjoy a traditional New Year’s
Eve rice cake. Thai people also celebrate
Songkran, or the Thai New Year in April.
The first day in Bangkok, people often have
a big water fight because they believe that
water washes away bad luck. So throwing
water is a sign of well—wishing and respect.

B. They have a big water fight.
C. They often exchange gifts with others.
D. They often enjoy a glass of wine on the boat.
New Year’s Eve is a time for people to buy presents for friends or relatives. It marks the start of the new year
and it is the busiest season for the shops and stores. Stores crowd with holiday gift buyers. But some people
celebrate the New Year in other ways. For example, they volunteer to serve meals for the homeless or visit old
people in nursing homes. To them, this is the right time to help others.
As New Year is coming, students at Jefferson Middle School are busy wrapping(包裹)gifts.
“I have a new order,” a student calls out to her classmates from the front door. Other students jump into action.
“The Wrapping Service is part of the school’s RISE program. Students in the program learn life skills and
vocational(职业的)skills,” their teacher Jenny told the local newspaper reporter.
Before New Year’s Eve, the students at Jefferson Middle School had a class meeting. Howard talked with the
students about how they could give back to the community. At last, they decided to do a real fundraiser(筹款活
动). They could do some work and raise money for Love Coffee because some disabled(残疾的)people are
working in this coffee shop. Students could wrap gifts, handle orders at the front desk, answer phones and do all
kinds of work there.
Nathan carefully cut the paper with scissors(剪刀). He is good at wrapping gifts. “I like to be organized at
home,” Nathan said. “I wrapped presents a lot.”Olive Werth, l2, said she liked working with people at the front desk. “I check people in,” Olive said. “I give
them gift tags. Sometimes I send emails for pickup.”
“The students have been busy,” Howard said. “In the last two days, we’ve wrapped over 70 gifts and raised
over 100 for Love Coffee.” The students do the project during the school day to learn what a job is like.

Hundreds of little robots are walking around colleges and cities in the United States, Britain and elsewhere.
The robots, about 50 centimeters(厘米)tall, are bringing food like pizza to students.
Starship Technology Company has made more than 1,000 robots, but in 2019 they only made 250. Hundreds
more will be sent out soon. “The demand(需求)for robots is increasing fast,” said Alastair Westgarth. He is the
head of the company and their robots are delivering food at 20 U.S. colleges and 25 more schools will use robots
soon.
The robots use cameras, sensors(传感器)and GPS to move around and even cross streets on their own at
the speed of 8 kilometers per hour. Computer scientists keep watch on the robots when they deliver food. When a
robot arrives, people enter(输入)a code(密码)from their phones to open the robot and get their food.
There are some limitations(局限性)for robots now. The robots have to be recharged regularly(经常充
电). They are slow and cannot travel far. They will not leave food at the door.
Ji Hye Kim is the chef of Miss Kim restaurant. She used robot delivery when her dining room was closed last
year. Kim prefers robots. She says delivery companies cost more and sometimes they cancel(取消)orders if they
do not have enough drivers. Delivery companies also group several orders per trip, so food sometimes arrives cold.
Robots take just one order at a time. Kim said the robots also excited people who often shared videos of their
interactions(互动)with robots.
Denis’ company is testing a new type of robots. The robots are about 1.8 meters tall and can travel at a top
speed of 40 kilometers on streets, not sidewalks. He says as the technology gets more popular, the costs will godown.

Living and dealing with kids can be a difficult job these days, but living and dealing with parents can be even
more difficult. If I have learned anything in my 16 years, it is that communication is very important, both when you
disagree and when you get along. With any relationship, you need to let the other person know how you are feeling.
If you are not able to communicate, you drift apart. When you are mad at your parents, or anyone else, not talking
to them doesn’t solve anything. Communication begins with the concerns(关心)of another. It means that you
can’t just come home from school, go up to your room and take no notice to anyone. Even if you just say “Hi”, and
see how their day was for five minutes, it is better than nothing. If you look up the word “communication” in a
dictionary, it will say “expressing ideas and feelings or giving people information: a letter or a message”.
To keep a good relationship with your parents, you must keep communication strong. Let them know how you
feel, even if it’s just by writing a note. When dealing with parents, you always have to make them feel good about
how they are doing as a parent. If you are trying to make them see something as you see it, tell them that you’ll
listen to what they have to say, and ask them politely to listen to you. Shouting or walking away only makes the
situation worse.
Here is an example: one night, Sophie went to a street party with her friends.
She knew she had to be home by midnight after the fireworks, but she didn’t feel she could just ask to go
home. That would be rude. After all, they had been nice enough to take her along with them. Needless to say, she
was late getting home. Her parents were mad at first, but when Sophie explained why she was late, they weren’t as
mad and let it go. Communication is the key here. If Sophie’s parents had not been willing to listen, Sophie wouldhave been in a lot of trouble. Communication isn’t a one-way matter: it goes both ways.
Just remember: if you get into a situation like Sophie’s, telling the other person how you feel—listening is the
key to communication.
30. What can we learn from the passage? ________
A. Writing a letter is the first step of communication.
B. Keeping silent is a good way for you to solve problems.
C. Asking your parents for help is the best way to communicate.
D. Communication helps us build a good relationship with our parents.
31. The underlined words “drift apart” in Paragraph 1 mean ________.
A. are different from others B. get close to each other
C. keep away from others D. become interested in new ideas
32. Paragraph 2 is mainly about ________.
A. how you get along well with your parents
B. when you start to communicate with your parents
C. what good parents should do to deal with problems
D. why you should make your parents feel good
33. The writer uses Sophie’s example to show that ________.
A. playing outside late is dangerous
B. communication is the key to problem-solving
C. Sophie should be polite to her parents
D. Sophie’s parents should listen to her explanation

Alexander Graham Bell is famous for his invention of the telephone. He was born in Edinburgh, Scotland in
1847 and went to school in London. Young Alexander was clever and curious. He studied the piano and began
inventing things at an early age. At age 16, Bell began studying the mechanics of speech. He was interested in
helping deaf people to learn to speak when he was in London. He taught these people how to use their mouths to
make the sounds needed for talking.
Bell’s family moved to Canada in 1870 and to the USA in 1871. In 1872, he opened a school in Boston, where
deaf people could learn to speak. For several years he taught the people who could not speak in Boston. But at the
same time he was developing a way to use electricity to send the sounds of talking along a wire(电线), and he
made the first telephone in June, 1875. He worked hard in his workshop for six months with his helper Tom
Watson. Finally, he spoke these famous words slowly into the telephone, “Mr. Watson, come here. I want to seeyou.” and Watson came to him.
The telephone developed quickly in the USA over the next few years. The Bell Telephone Company started in
1877, and in 1878 the first telephone centre was built in New York. More than 150, 000 people had telephones in
their homes ten years later. In 1915, Bell made the first transcontinental phone call to Watson from New York to
San Francisco.
Besides the telephone, Bell worked on hundreds of projects throughout his career and received patents(专
利)in many fields. He invented Photophone(光线电话)and Audiometer(听力表). He also helped develop
