The shiny black sports car sat at the traffic lights. The driver’s window was down, and the driver was wearing
a suit and dark sunglasses. It was an expensive car. Thomas Campbell knew that because he used to have one. But
now he was sitting on a bench, which had served as his bed for the previous few nights, with no more than a pocket
full of change to his name. The lights changed, the car sped off and Thomas sighed.
It had all happened in the space of a year. He was laid off from bis well-paid job when the economy took a
turn for the worse. Although he was paid handsomely.he lived a lifestyle to match and always spent any raise or
bonus on expensive but unnecessary things. Losing his job put pressure on his marriage and his wife left. Then he
couldn’t make his mortgage (贷款) repayments. A few weeks later be found himself in a cheap hotel and a few
months after that, in a sleeping bag under a bridge downtown.
As Thomas walked in the streets late that night.he thought about the man in the car and about whether be could
improve his life again. He had grown up quite poor, so was used to not having much, but living outside was hard.
Perhaps the hardest thing was how differently people treated him now when he didn’t have a suit or haircut. They
often said negative things. Even worse than that was just treating him as invisible. Once he walked past someone he
used to work with, they looked through him like he weren’t there, and it made him feel less than a human.
Then as be turned a corner, he heard the cries of a child from a second-storey window. He could see a little girl
with a thick plume (缕) of smoke surrounding her. He looked about but no one was nearby. He shouted to the girl,
but she was crying and coughing and couldn’t hear him. Then be heard another cry from inside. It was a baby.

I was always a big fan of football, and watching a game at the stadium was obviously one of the best ways to
be free from work and relax. Therefore,as soon as I heard the news that there would be a game of our home team
against the team from Mississippi, I booked a front-row seat, excited about having a fantastic weekend I was
excited when I sat in the stadium.
When the game began, however, I discovered that I was sitting directly in front of a Super-lungs. He seemed
like a nice guy. But his idea of having fun at a football game was obviously nothing like mine,or most well-
behaved football fans’. He yelled (大喊) non-stop as loud as he could. He yelled at the coaches, the players, the
officials and the Mississippi State fans. Always at the top of his lungs.
The Super-lungs made an surprising performance and kept it for us for the entire 90 minutes and never showed
any sign of tiredness. He was caught up in his own world so he failed to notice he was ruining (破坏) hundreds of
others’ experience of watching the game.
I felt that my ear drums (耳鼓) almost got broken. His mouth was only two feet away from my ears. For a
while I thought of shouting back and stopping him yelling. People around were turning to look at him, and I could
read their thoughts: “Is he never going to stop?” And he seemed not to see those looks.
At halftime I escaped by walking for a few minutes outside the stadium. I was thinking of finding an empty
seat in another part of the stadium. However, to my disappointment, the seats were all taken. I had no choice but to
go back to the Super-lungs. When returning to my seat, I missed my steps and fell heavily on the stairs. As I was
struggling (挣扎) to stand up, a pair of huge hands helped me from behind.注意:

There are lots of chances in front of us. Whether you can seize them or not depends on the choices you make.
This reminds me of one choice I made during my childhood.
Two tickets. Only two tickets to the final basketball game.
Three pairs of eyes focused on the tickets in Dad’s out-stretched hand. Mike, the oldest, asked the question
running through everyone’s mind, “Only one ticket for us three? But, Dad, which of us will go with you?” Avery,
the youngest, repeated the question quietly. I asked Dad if there was any chance to get more tickets. I might be the
middle sister, but I was just as eager as my basketball-crazy brothers for a night out with Dad. Dad said he’d got the
tickets from a friend and there were only two available.
Seeing that none of us would give up the chance, Dad told us he would choose which of the three of us
deserved to go by the following morning.
The next morning, we hurried into the kitchen and looked for Dad, only to find that he had gone out. We were
told to get started on our Saturday cleanup as soon as we finished breakfast. Mike complained that he couldn’t
concentrate on chores with the game a mere eleven hours away. He slurped the last of his milk, grabbed the
basketball and headed towards the back door. Avery dashed after his brother. Before I realized it, the door snapped
shut. I glanced out the window and saw Mike practicing his shot while Avery cheered him on.
Seeing the mess on the breakfast table—the leftovers on the sticky plates and dirty cups, I felt frustrated. I
approached the window and knocked on it. When the boys looked at me, I held up a kitchen sponge and dishtowel.
Mike casually nodded to me and held up five fingers. Sure, five more minutes! I didn’t believe they would return todo the cleanup in five minutes, especially in Dad’s absence. Apparently, they had made their choice.

When the tragedy struck me during the Depression (大萧条), my father did the only thing he could.
The tragedy happened in the year 1933. I was only 6 years old when I was rushed to the hospital with two
crushed feet. My parents were told I might never walk again.
The accident happened when I was sitting in front of our house in Lowell, Massachusetts. I was playing in a
puddle (水坑) after a rainstorm when I felt a huge weight on my feet. When I looked up, there was a car tire on my
feet. I cried out, but the motor was running and no one could hear me over the engine.
The driver had run across the street for a newspaper. When he got back to his car, he drove away — never
knowing he had parked on my feet.
Just about then, our neighbor’s son came home and saw me bent over my feet in pain. He immediately carried
me home, and I remember thinking how tall and strong he was.An ambulance came, and I remained in the hospital for 3 weeks while my feet were “repaired”. When I
returned home, I could hardly walk.
I sat in our bay window and watched the children play on the street and longed to join them...but I couldn’t. I
felt so left out despite my parents’ company.
My parents were told that if I was ever to walk again, I’d need treatment, which in those days meant riding a
tricycle (三轮车) to strengthen the muscle and eventually get my feet back into condition for walking.
Our family couldn’t afford such an expensive thing. Times were tough during the Depression, and there were
five mouths to feed, besides buying coal and wood for the stove.
Dad couldn’t afford the bus fare and on cold winter days he walked 7 miles every day in his only winter coat
to get to work. No, there was no money for a tricycle. I would be a disabled person all my life.

Then one day, while sitting at my usual place in the window, I saw my father walking up the street
carrying a tricycle on his shoulder.

Sophia frowned as she helped her mother and father set out the cooking supplies in the shiny steel kitchen. Her
family had just moved here from San Francisco, having bought a small restaurant, which was set to open in the next
few days.
“Moving here was a dumb idea," Sophia grumbled, mostly to herself. The girl had been joyless about themove, but her parents had made the decision and were now too busy getting ready for the grand opening to listen to
her complaints.
The first few days at her new school hadn't been easy, either. She found it hard to talk to people she didn't
know, and it seemed like the students hadn't even noticed her. Sophia sighed and got back to washing dishes.
On the day of the grand opening,Sophia' s parents were all smiling, welcoming customers into the restaurant,
brightly decorated in gold and red. Even Sophia was in a good mood as she rushed around, seating guests, handing
out menus, and pouring tall glasses of water. This was a big day for her family.
At one of the tables sat a family with two daughters who were about Sophia' s age. As she filled their
glasses,Sophia realized the twins were in her class,Emily and Jenny. Sophia ducked her head down so her long hair
covered her face, and she turned away from the table.
Sophia' s mother found her soon after, in the kitchen loading the dishwasher.
“Honey, what are you doing back here? We need you out front with the customers. ”
“Mom, I don't want to be out there. There are kids from school!”
“So?” her mother asked.“That's good! Go take them some fortune cookies and say hello!”She clucked her
tongue disapprovingly at Sophia and disappeared out of the kitchen.
Sophia frowned. She grabbed a handful of fortune cookies that they gave out after every meal, but first she tore
open a wrapper and cracked a cookie open for herself. She popped a sweet, crunchy piece in her mouth, and
absently read the fortune paper it held.
“Many friends are found with a single smile,” it read.

I’m smaller than everyone else my age. When I walk in the halls at school, I have to squeeze in between the
bigger kids to get by. At the playground, sometimes even little kids try to boss me around. Mia, my best friend, is so
tall that when she walks, I have to jog to keep up with her.
I used to try to make myself taller whenever I could. My posture was perfect, straight as an arrow. I hung from
the tree in our backyard to stretch out my arms and legs. I even ate all my vegetables. Every day I measured myself,
but I was the same height every time. Frustrating!
“Don’t worry,” Mom always said. “Being small has its advantages.” “Really? I could never notice any.”
One day, Mrs. Alvarez announced to the class that we’d be putting on a spring play. I practiced all the lines.
But at the audition (试演), when I walked up to the stage, Mrs. Alvarez cried, “You’ll be perfect as the elf (小精灵)!
You’re just the right size for the costume.” I even never got a chance to deliver the practiced lines. Back home I
grumbled (咕哝) to mum that I was made an elf. But she bet I would be the best elf. To please her, I went to
rehearsals (排练), though I only had two lines.
Mia got the lead role-a girl wandering through a magical fairy forest in search of her lost dog. In the last scene,
she finds a box under a giant mushroom, and when she opens it, her dog jumps out. Mrs. Alvarez’s dog, Prince,
played the dog role. She brought him to all the rehearsals, and when he wasn’t onstage, we got to play with him, but
he seemed to like me best.
The night of the show, my first line came early, “Let’s ask the Fairy Queen!” Since my only other line was
toward the end, I waited offstage, playing with Prince.

“Sun, sun, sun, here it comes…”
Danny sang while his fingers pressed and pulled skillfully at the guitar strings, delivering a slow and peaceful
tune. A circle of audience had formed, nodding and moving slowly to the song.
Lying at the feet of the street performer was his most adoring fan: One-Eyed, a white stray (流浪) dog with
pieces of brown. Danny felt the name was suitable considering its physical disability. Usually, One-Eyed would
bark loudly as Danny performed. Much to his annoyance, people often mistook the pair as owner and pet. At this
time, Danny would reply, “My dog? No!”, eyes rolling at the idea. How he wished the dog would leave him alone
instead!
On a snowy night, while Danny was performing, a bird flew downward, landing into the midst of the crowd. It
cooed happily as if to harmonize with Danny. Unfortunately, that did not sit well with One-Eyed, which
immediately bounced at it and the bird flew away desperately.
The unexpected chaos upturned Danny's hat, which could have been filled with notes and coins from his
appreciative audience, leaving it ignored on the ground. "Argh! The hateful dog!” Danny broke down, thinking to
himself, “Either the dog goes or I go!”
On the next night, Danny tried to find a new place and chanced upon the park. For a while his earnings were
good unsurprisingly as there was a steady flow of visitors. However, that didn't last long. One-Eyed came along and
appointed itself as Danny's guardian. "Argh! Here comes the hateful dog again!" That night, Danny hadn't madeenough money he should have, all thanks to the troublesome dog.
Danny was almost mad with One-Eyed. “What should I do? Call an animal shelter?” Torn by this problem, he
walked aimlessly by the lake of the park. With all his mind focused on how to get rid of the dog, Danny didn't
watch his steps. Suddenly, he slipped and fell into the lake accidentally. Struggling in the icy water, he cried for
help desperately, almost choking to death. Sensing the approach of death, Danny got into overwhelming panic.

I needed to do something in my community (社区) in order to complete the community service hours required
to graduate from high school. Some of my friends had signed up to spend time at a soup kitchen, so I did, too. It
seemed like a good thing to do.
I thought that we would just be passing out dinners to those in need, but I found out we would be doing
everything from preparing to serving the dinner. We began preparing the food, from mixing salad dressing to
separating frozen meat. Much still needed to be done before dinner was served, but already outside the building
many homeless people were gathering. It wasn’t until a couple of hours later that we opened the doors and beganserving dinner.
As the line of people came toward me, I got a little scared. I’d come face to face with the homeless: How
should I act? How would they treat me? Would they hate me for having more than they did? While some of the
people looked very friendly, some of them looked so dangerous. I didn’t have too much time to worry about it. I
was assigned (分配) to serve the salad with the lady next to me. She smiled at me and said if I needed help, she’d
be right there, which I found quite comforting.
I had never seen so many people wanting food. They were of all ages and nationalities. Most of them wore
clothes that were torn and dirty. Some looked like they had tally given up on life, while others seemed to be making
the best of the situation, smiling and joking. Some were better off than others, but they all needed a good meal and
a warm place to eat. It saddened me to think of how many people there were who didn’t have a place to call home
and the only food they got came from a soup kitchen.

The five children in Larrane Leech’s day care group were outdoors early, painting landscapes under the dizzy
sun. By 10 a. m., it was time to find shade, so Larrane decided they would walk down to the river.
“We’re going to pick berries now, ” she announced. A nature lover, Larrane insisted they spend as much time
as possible outdoors.
Larrane handed each child an empty jar and called for Pal, her one-year-old German shepherd (德国牧羊犬).
The group made its way over the dusty road and then onto a dirt path through the trees. They stopped at the first
berry bush and got busy picking berries, cheering and talking excitedly.
A young cougar (美洲狮)cocked an ear toward the birdlike chatter and sniffed the air. Stepping over the thick
carpet of pine needles, the cougar moved quietly toward the children.
Larrane sensed the children suddenly go quiet. She looked up to see the back end of a cougar, the size of Pal,
standing over one child, Mikey. The sight of the cougar near her kids immediately froze Larrane. Larrane couldn’t
tell whether Mikey had been bitten. Her mind racing wildly, she darted toward the cougar. Desperately intending to
grab its tail, she shifted aim at the last minute and seized the cougar by the neck. She shook it from side to side.
Instantly, the cougar wheeled toward Larrane. Growling and hissing, it stretched up high and brought its paws down
upon the head of the woman. Although still in its youth, it had all the teeth and muscle a cougar needs to pull down
a victim three times its size. This animal was capable of killing her.

Aladdin and his mother lived a poor life in Arabia. One day, he got an old lamp under a tree. WHOOSH!
When he rubbed it, noise, fire and red smoke came from the lamp, and out of the smoke came a very big jinnee(神仙). “ I’ am slave of the lamp. What is your wish, master?” Cried the jinnee.
With this magic lamp, Aladdin and his mother became rich and he even married the princess. He owned all the
happiness. Meanwhile, he was respected by people around for his kindness to the poor. However, he was envied by
Abanazar a magician from Morocco who wanted Aladdin’s magic lamp very much but he didn’t know where the
lamp was hidden. So he got out his seven black stones which were magic too, and put them in water. Then he was
informed that the lamp was in a palace in Arabia.
Abanazar flew to the palace and plotted his dirty plans. For the next week Abanazar watched Aladdin’s palace
until Aladdin and his friends left the palace to go hunting in the hills one day.
Abanazar passed off himself as an old man, selling lamps in the street. “But not for money.” a slave-girl
reported to the princess, “the old man said, ‘New lamps for old. Give me an old lamp and you can have a new one’.
So every body’s getting a new lamp.”
“Yes, my husband’s old lamp! Go and give it to the old man”, the princess knew nothing about the lamp and
its magic, “ Aladdin will be happy to have a nice new lamp!”
The old man(it was Abanazar ,of course) fled into the hills with the magic lamp in such a hurry that his magic
stones were left on the floor in front of the palace.

I was sitting at the dinner table with my family. Without warning, my brother smiled and turned down the
kitchen lights so we all were sitting in darkness. Then my mom walked over, carrying a big, chocolate cake
decorated with red icing. The cake was lit up with ten birthday candles, and everyone started singing to me!
My favorite part of birthdays is getting the chance to make a wish. Sometimes wishes come true, and
sometimes they don’t, but the fun of waiting and hoping makes me happy. It’s like magic is in the air or something.Maybe I’m too old to believe in magic and wishes, but I don’t care. I still do it.
I closed my eyes, made a wish, and blew. My grandparents clapped and my little sister stuck her finger into the
clouds of icing. She’s always doing stupid things like that. Mom took the cake away to cut it into slices. She gave
me the first piece, and it was awesome. Chocolate with vanilla (香草味的)cream in the middle-delicious.
Ding-dong! The doorbell rang. We weren’t expecting anybody else. "Why don’t you go answer the door,
kiddo?" suggested Dad. He likes calling me kiddo. Mom says it’s because he’s always calling us kids by the wrong
names. I frowned (皱眉) trying to think. Was this a trick? Was I about to be made fun of?
"Okay," I said slowly and headed for the door. I couldn’t see anybody through the glass window. Cautiously I
opened the door. There was a large box on the doorstep decorated with a note on it that read, "Happy Birthday!
Open me!"
"What’s this?"Now I was confused, but excited. The box wasn’t very heavy, so I bought it inside. My family
crowded all around me. "What is it? "asked my grandma.
"Open it!" My brother was impatient, as usual. "Box ,box!" yelled my little sister, trying to get her hands on it.

One Saturday morning, I got a call from my aunt. She told me that she had to go with my uncle on a business
trip for the day, and she wondered if I could look after my little 6-year-old cousin, Max. I knew that for them,
leaving their dearest son for a day was the last thing in the whole world they would do, because they were what is
known as “helicopter parents”, who keep watching everything their kids do. As a high school student, I knew
exactly that children who were brought up by helicopter parents could end up having many problems and I hoped I
could do something to improve the situation, so I accepted her request. Actually, I was honored to be trusted by
such parents.
When I arrived there, my aunt and uncle were just ready to go out. The last thing my aunt said to me before
they left was “Don’t let him hurt himself while we are away.” She repeated it several times until she thought I took
it seriously. After they left, I tried to teach Max to play some games that might be against my aunt’s will, but failed.
Max seemed not to be interested, and even frightened. I didn’t want to push him, so I decided to slow it down.
Around lunch time, Max asked me what was for lunch. I said, “I don’t know, what do you want?” He said,
“Can you cook scrambled eggs?” I replied, “Of course I can!” “Well,” said Max, “I want some.” I asked him if he
could cook. He looked at me in amazement, and said, “Of course not. Mom won’t allow me to approach the
kitchen. She thinks I’ll be burnt if I try to do that, but I think it would be amazing to cook what I like on my own.”

14. 阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。
Alexis Vaughan, 17, sat quietly in the passenger seat of her dad's car. She stared out the window at the Preston,
Idaho, cornfields.
Alexis, a high school student, let her eyes lazily scan the landscape for wildlife. Still, she was terrified when a
deer came into view about 200 yards in front of them, just a few feet off the road. "Dad, there's a deer, there!"
Alexis said, rolling down the window for a better look. It was a three-point buck (雄鹿) — a male deer with sharp,
three-pronged antlers (角) on each side of its head.
As the car moved closer, Alexis saw that the buck's head was bent toward the ground. Then she heard a
scream. A few seconds later, she saw an arm fly up near the buck's head. Alexis realized the buck was attacking a
woman. Sue Panter, a 44-year-old mother, had been out for her morning run. The buck had come out from the tall
corn and began following her. Having lived in rural Idaho for years, Sue knew that most bucks got frightened by
humans. But this buck edged closer, even when she threw at it with a handful of gravels (石子).
Sue went to pick up a log to use for self-defense, and the buck attacked her. It lifted her with its antlers (角)
and threw her into the air. Sue could feel the horns punctured (刺穿) her leg and blood flowed down her leg. Within
seconds, the buck had pushed her off the road and into the cornfield.
When Alexis and her father pulled up, the buck was rolling Sue like a rag doll. Alexis looked into the woman's
terrified eyes, and before her father had even stopped the car, the 104 pound teenager jumped quickly out of the car
and down the slope toward the buck. She was kicking and hitting it to get its attention. Then Michael, her father,
who had followed his daughter, wrestled the buck away from the women by holding the antlers.

It happened when Tom was only ten years old. That day he was at home with his elder sister Jane. Tom was
doing his homework when he heard raised voices. At first he didn't think seriously about it, since it was always
noisy downstairs, but he soon realized this time it was different.
“Quick! Quick! Remove the motorcycles from the shop,” someone yelled.
Then a thick burning smell filled the air. When Tom opened the front door of their flat to investigate, a thick
cloud of smoke greeted him. The motorcycle shop had caught fire and people were running and crying.
Jane, who had been playing the violin in her room, hurried to the living room. They rushed out of the door and
along the corridor(走廊)through the smoke.
They were heading towards the stairway at the far end of the corridor when Jane suddenly stopped. She turned
around and headed back the way they came. Tom had no idea what she was doing, but he followed her.
Jane had suddenly remembered the lady in her 70s who lived next door to them, who they called Makcik. Jane
began banging on Makcik's door, but got no answer. As the smoke thickened around them, Tom could see many of
their neighbours—some still in their pyjamas—running for safety. The thought of fear crossed his mind.
"She would have run for safety like everyone else!" Tom cried. However, Jane refused to give up. "I know
Makcik's still inside.” She said she was familiar with Makcik's daily routine and was certain she would still be
sleeping. She pounded against the door. "Go downstairs. Go now! Go!”

In 2000, when I was around seven years old, all my family were coming back from a T-ball game, which was
our usual weekend adventure, but unlike every other weekend, a surprise was waiting for us in our driveway—two
adult geese and a small goose. Obviously startled by our return, the adults flew away in panic, with their baby, too
young to fly, left in place, tiny and delicate.
Hours passed one after another, and night eventually fell. However, with it also came a deep chill and a fear of
watchful animals. It was apparent that the gosling needed protection, warmth, and food to make it to the morning,
so we had to help it, and we brought him onto our back yard.
We all pretty much slept with one eye open till morning came. And then another morning. And still another.
Each morning, we would try to drive the goose away to his parents, who kept coming back to our yard. He
wouldn’t go to them, though, and neither would they come close enough to claim him. We kept this up for five
days, but no luck. Realizing the young goose had clearly decided we were his family by then, we had to give him a
name, calling the little guy Peeper, because he would often follow us around the yard making a peeping(唧唧叫)
noise, nonstop. Besides, we decided that Peeper was a boy. I don’t know why; it just felt right.A year passed and we settled into a routine. Peeper slept on our back yard each night and, in typical goose
fashion, used it as a latrine(公共厕所). My dad would spray off all the goose droppings daily. Part of this ceremony
included Dad throwing Peeper up into the air so he could flap its wings and flew a loop(圈) around the house, and
then came back again once the porch was clean.
Days turned into weeks, and weeks turned into months.

A worried call came into Jimmy Gill’s bar this past March. A newly married woman who had spent the
afternoon at the beach bar couldn’t find her wallet. She didn’t care about her ID, credit cards, or $150 in cash-but
her wedding ring was put inside.
Gill didn’t like the idea that a theft could have occurred at his place. So he set out to find the wallet. He spent
hours scanning footage(影片片段)from 16 different surveillance(监控),cameras, watching the woman’s every
step in the bar until she went to sit on a bench outside and left when her ride arrived. Within minutes, a young man
in a jacket approached the bench, put something hurried in his pocket, and walked off. Gill posted a clip on the
bar’s Facebook page. “I didn’t want to accuse him, ” he said. “I just asked if anybody knew who the guy was.”
Within hours, Gill got a text from 17-year-old Rivers Prather, who’d heard about the post from one of his
friends. Prather admitted having taken the wallet and told Gill he’d done it because he hadn’t eaten in two days. Hesaid he saw the ring but thought it was fake, so he took the money and threw the wallet off the dock (码头)into the
ocean. Then he bought a sandwich.
Gill, unsure whether he believed Prather, told the teen to meet him at the dock. There, they got to talking, and
Prather revealed that he wasn’t getting along with his family and had been living in the woods for a week. Gill, a
father of two with another on the way, look closely at Prather-his small build, his pale cheeks-and saw him for what
he was: more of a kid than a criminal.
But the police were already on the case, and because of the missing ring, Prather could be facing charges. “He
would be going to jail,” Gill says. “I had to help him somehow.”

Teen Becomes A Local HeroWhen Sydney Raley headed into her weekend shift on Saturday, December 18, she likely expected to do more
of the same: Stand at the drive-through window, take orders over the headset, and hand each customer their meal
with a smile.
In fact. that’s exactly how it started. Sydney Raley has been working at MC Donald’s for about seven months
and so far, it’s been her typical after-school job. The day had been mostly normal -making coffee, making drinks,
and going into the lunch rush.
But a few hours into her shift. things took a dramatic turn. After handing a customer some of their food,
Sydney let them know that more would be coming as soon as it was ready. But just seconds later, she noticed a
terrible look of panic spread across the woman’s face. Then came the coughing. She was coughing like crazy and
was speechless. Her daughter was in the passenger seat and looked extremely confused and frightened.
Sydney immediately knew she was choking. The first aid training Sydney received more than four years ago
hit her. Most 15-year-olds might panic at the sight of this. But not Sydney. Instead, the teen remained calm and
quickly shouted to both her manager and the woman’s daughter to dial 911. Then, she dove through the drive-
through window and came to the rescue.
The teen pushed the driver’s side door forcefully open and got the choking woman to her feet. Then she dug
down deep into her memory bank to recall everything she learned from her Red Cross babysitter class-which she’d
taken four years earlier. All that training of how to use the Heimlich maneuver(哈姆立克急教法)immediately
kicked in. Still, she had never actually had to use the life-saving technique before, and after a few tries, it wasn’t
quite working. Luckily, another customer was just a few feet away in the parking lot.

The Christmas Spirit Strikes Again
I always dreamed of making a big surprise of a lifetime. Thanks to a little determination, some luck, and a
generous helping of Christmas Spirit, my dream became a reality.
My family is Canadian, although my sister moved down to Australia a few years ago to study. She was
graduating just before Christmas, but due to my own scholarly schedule back home, I would be unable to make it
down in time for her graduation. She was understandably disappointed, and I felt guilty that I wasn’t able to be
there for her on this special occasions.
While I was talking to my professor the week before my sister’s graduation, she commented, “Well, if you
want to go, just go ahead!" I couldn’t believe my luck! I nearly jumped for joy. “Just make sure you get permission
from administrator (行政主管),” she added. My heart sank. The administration at my school was infamous for
denying any sort of time-off requests. I almost didn’t bother asking, because I knew it would be a waste of time.
But something in me decided to try, just in case. Maybe it was the hope that the Christmas Spirit would somehow
affects the administrator at this time of year. When I returned home to check the reply in my inbox, I steeled myself
for disappointment. I held my breath, opened the e-mail, and started to read. And re-read, just to make sure I’d
understood. Approval? I couldn’t believe my luck!
Immediately, I called the airline. Unexpectedly, even during the busy Christmas season, I was able to change
my ticket to arrive the day before my sister’s graduation. With news this fantastic, I was bursting to tell my sister.
But, fingers on the dial((拨号盘), I paused. Wouldn’t it be much more fantastic if I could surprise her? What a state
of shock she would be in! Slowly a great idea came to my mind. I decided a much more dramatic arrival than just a
ring of the doorbell. What if I couldn’t arrive in a box?
I started to plot.

When Ruth was sixty-eight years old, she visited her daughter Judy and teenage granddaughter Marcy in
California. They headed for their cabin, moving forty miles up and down the mountains in their car, along a narrow
one-lane road that wound terrifyingly close to cliffs (悬崖).
After dinner, Marcy announced the water tank was low and that she would drive the car down to the pump and
get water. Ruth was nervous about her young granddaughter driving down the narrow road by herself, but Judy
reminded her that Marcy had been driving vehicles up there roads for many years
“Just be careful, Marcy”, her mother warned. “They’ve had a drought up here and the road along the cliff is
pretty shaky. Be sure to hug the mountain side.”
Ruth and Judy watched Marcy from the big window where they could see the road winding down the
mountainside. Fifteen minutes later, Judy was still watching when suddenly she screamed,”Oh no! She went over
the cliff, Momma! The car and Marcy--they went over! We have to help her!Come on!”
Judy took off running desperately. Grabbing a three-foot-long walking stick against the cabin door, Ruth ran
behind her, but Judy was quickly out of sight after the first turn in the road. Breathing hard, Ruth ran on and on,
trying to catch up with her daughter. It was getting harder and harder to see anything at dusk.
Suddenly she stopped, not knowing where she was.”Marcy!Judy!”she shouted.
A faint voice .”Momma!”It was Judy.
Ruth screamed into the darkness “Judy, where are you?” Off to her right and down the cliff she heard, “Down
here,Mother!Don’t come near the edge! I slipped on loose rocks and fell over. I’m down about ten feet.”
“Oh dear! Judy, what can I do?”
“Just stay back, Momma!”
Facing the situation, Ruth felt her heart was pounding, and chest pains almost took her breath away. She
started to sob, totally at a loss what to do.

Rebecca stretched her tired back. “That’s the last seedling (树苗), Pa. Have we planted enough?”
Pa walked to the end of the row of cottonwood seedlings. “No,” he said. “We have to plant trees all the way to
that rock over there. We’ll need about twenty more seedlings.”
“I’ll get the seedlings,” offered Rebecca. She longed to cool her feet in the shallow river running through the
cotton field.
“You’d better let me go, Miss Petticoats,” teased her twin brother, William. “There are dangers all over this
prairie (草原).”
“You may both go,” said Pa. “But hurry back. I’d like to finish before sundown.”
They went across the shallow river to a sandbar where small cottonwood seedlings grew.
Gently, they pulled the seedlings from the sand.
“There! That’s twenty, with a few to spare,” said Rebecca.
“OK,” said William. He led the way to the riverbank, and then stopped. “Look! That’s the dugout (防空洞) wehad lived in before we moved here last year,” he said, pointing to a hole on the grassy riverbank.
“Come on, let’s go inside.”
“No,” Rebecca said, “Pa is waiting. Besides, it’s hard to tell what’s in it.”
“Then you go back,” said William, handing the seedlings to Rebecca. I’ll catch up.” He ran to the dugout and
stepped inside.
Rebecca wrapped the seedlings in her long apron (围裙) and began to walk. Suddenly she froze in her tracks.
A huge rattlesnake (响尾蛇) moved along the riverbank.
It stopped right in front of the dugout and lay still, coiling up on the warm sunny bank.
“William!” Rebecca shouted. “Don’t come out!”
“Huh?” William’s face appeared at a tiny window beside the door of the dugout.
Rebecca pointed at the rattler. William’s face paled when he saw the snake blocking the doorway. He turned
desperate eyes toward Rebecca, and then he glanced behind himself. Rebecca knew what he was thinking: “Were
there more snakes waiting in the shadowy corners of the dugout?”
Rebecca’s mind raced, trying to think of a way to get William out of there. An idea popped into her head. It
was their only hope. It was risky, but it was the only hope.
“Don’t move,” she said to William in a soft voice. “When I say NOW, you run out of there as fast as you can.”
Rebecca removed the skirt-like petticoat (衬裙) from beneath her dress, and then dipped it into the river. She
squeezed out some of the water, and then climbed to the top of the bank, directly above the dugout’s opening.

Growing up on a small farm, I lived a life that I took for granted. My father worked in the city as a plumber(水

made of leather, brass and chewing tobacco who tried to teach my brother and me useful things, including respect.
He also had a temper and was strict with us for he would scold us when we made some careless mistakes.
Sometimes, my father seemed like a distant enemy to me and I didn’t like him very much.
One day I came home from primary school and his car was already there. Once inside, I was told by my
mother that he didn’t feel well. His back hurt. My father never missed work; in fact, when he came home, he went
to the barn to work even more. I remember looking at him secretly around the corner as he lay on his bed in the
middle of the day.
Later, my mother told me he got multiple myeloma(多发性骨髓瘤),a type of cancer. As the cancer grows, the
person will shrink because the disease destroys the body’s energy and the abnormal antibodies cause problems for
other cells and tissue. Bones eventually look like Swiss cheese, and when they break, they may never heal. But I
didn’t realize that my father’s time was rather limited and just treated him the same way I used to.
For the last year of my fathers life, his entire day consisted df rising from his hospital bed in the living room
and walking to his chair to sit and think. He was predictably in that chair when I came home one day during the
ninth grade. I do not remember where my mother and brother were, but the two of us were alone.

I walked alongside my father, grabbing his right hand tightly. All my clothes were new: the black shoes, the
green school uniform, and the red cap. They did not make me happy, however, as this was the day I was to be
thrown into school for the first time.
My mother stood at the window watching our progress, and I turned towards her from time to time, hoping she
would help. We walked along a street lined with gardens, and fields planted with crops: pears, and date palms.
“Why school?” I asked my father. “What have I done?”
“I'm not punishing you, ” he said, laughing. “School's not a punishment. It's a place that makes useful men out
of boys. Don't you want to be useful like your brothers?”
I was not convinced. I did not believe there was really any good to be had in tearing me away from my home
and throwing me into the huge, high-walled building.
When we arrived at the gate we could see the courtyard, vast and full of boys and girls. “Go in by
yourself,”said my father, “and join them. Put a smile on your face and be a good example to others. ”
I hesitated and clung (粘着)to his hand, but he gently pushed me from him. “Be a man, ” he said. “Today
you truly begin life. You will find me waiting for you when it's time to leave. ”
I took a few steps. Then the faces of the boys and girls came into view. I did not know a single one of them,
and none of them knew me. I felt I was a stranger who had lost his way. But then some boys began to glance at me
in curiosity, and one of them came over and asked, "Who brought you?"
“My father,” I whispered.

After 21 years of marriage, my wife wanted me to take another woman out to dinner and a movie. It’s hard to
imagine that the other woman was my mother, who has been living alone for 19 years, but I am too busy to visit her
often. That night I called to invite her to go out for dinner and a movie.
“What’s wrong? Are you well?” she asked. My mother always doubts that a late night call is a sign of bad
news.
“It would be pleasant to spend some time with you,” I responded.
As I drove over to pick her up, I noticed that she seemed to be nervous about our date. But she smiled from a
face that was as beautiful as an angel’s. “I told my friends that I was going to go out with my son, and they were
impressed,” she said.
We went to a restaurant that was very nice and comfortable. My mother took my arm as if she were the First
Lady. After we sat down, I had to read the menu. Her eyes could only read large print. I saw mom sitting there
looking at me with a smile on her lips.
“I used to have to read the menu when you were small,” she said. “Then it’s time to let me return the favour,” I
responded.
During the dinner, we had an agreeable conversation-nothing special but catching up on recent events. We
talked so much that we missed the movie. As we arrived at her house later, she said, “I’ll go out with you again, but
only if you let me invite you.” I agreed.

The Principal and the Popcorn Popper
Spring was approaching. Principal (校长)Peters was wandering in the empty part of the huge school yard
when the students' request flashed through his mind again. It couldn't be better to eat the cabbages, carrots, or
eggplants planted by themselves. But how to raise money for seeds and tools?
The topic came up at the teachers' meeting. Teachers suggested various means of collecting money with
enthusiasm; one teacher suggested, “We have a popcorn popper (爆米 花机)in the teachers' lounge (休息
室).How about kids making popcorn to sell?”
When the popcorn proposal reached the students, they jumped with joy. Agreement was reached -every
Thursday, in their labor course, by selling popcorn for 25 cents a bag, they could enjoy a snack while raising money
to buy seeds and tools for their garden.
Soon the first Thursday came. Principal Peters got to his office as usual just right next to the teachers' lounge.
Hearing popping sound, he smiled, for it meant the promise of the potential garden. But it was REALLY loud. He
wrapped a scarf around his head to block his ears. When the first Thursday was over, he breathed a sigh of relief.
But the next Thursday, popping sound happened again. This time, he had brought earplugs. The day, it seemed,
would last forever. But for the kids' garden dream, he put up with it willingly.
The following Thursdays witnessed Principal Peters attempting to pile gym mats against his office walls and
asking the fifth grade to practice for their concert in the hallway outside his office. The "unbearable" popping sound
seemed to have taken root in his head! But for the kids' vegetable garden dream, he put up with it willingly.
On the 11th Thursday, he went to the teachers' lounge again to see how much money was still needed. Seeing
the Principal coming with a hard-hidden painful expression, the students responded cheerfully, “Only with 41
dollars our garden dream will come true.” Hearing this, Principal Peters left without saying anything.

the fire escape. He climbed to the second floor and over to the window. The smoke was thick, and the windows
were cracking from the heat. He grabbed the little girl and put her on the fire escape. Then he climbed into the room

People gather across the street and they cheered for him. The children’s mother hugged him with tears in her eyes.
Because of this brave action, the front page of the local paper called him “Homeless Hero”. Then he was contacted

Just then, a familiar barking was heard in the distance. In a split second, a splash of brown, out of breath,
quickly jumped into the lake. It was One-Eyed! It barked, swimming toward Danny with all its might. On spotting
One-Eyed, Danny seemed to see a ray of hope, attempting to move towards it instantly. Instinctively, Danny
grabbed the tail of One-Eyed. Ultimately, they managed to climb ashore, exhausted. Gazing at One-Eyed in
disbelief, Danny patted it tenderly in return. One-Eyed was no longer troublesome; instead, it became a “hero” in
his heart.
“My hero! Thank you for saving me," Danny said gratefully with watery eyes. “You're my brave guardian
angel!” Since that night, “One-Eyed” was nonexistent while “Hero”, as the dog was re-named, became a part of
Danny's performance. So attached were they to each other that they became genuine partners. Danny would include
his pet as he engaged the audience. Hero also had its own place to lie on-the feet of Danny. While Danny played
guitar, Hero would bark happily to harmonize with his owner. What a perfect match!

16. Paragraph1:
Before we knew it, the little thing had grown into a big bird with two powerful wings. One day, when Dad
threw Peeper into the air, he just flew away and didn’t come back. With night falling, all of us became increasingly
worried. We looked for him, called his name and even peeped like him, anxiously expecting his return. But the
special buddy never appeared again. Suddenly losing the special companion, everyone was very, very sad. It took a
long time before we accepted the fact that he was missing. Meanwhile, we could only pray he found his parents and
went off on his natural way. Twenty years passed, and Peeper became a fond memory for my family.
Paragraph 2:
It came as a total surprise to me when, in 2019, an adult goose made his way back to my family home. He did
all of the same things Peeper used to do in Peepers old ways, and much to my surprise, he even responded to the
name Peeper. It became clear to me that my old best friend had returned, 20 years later. This experience has been as
meaningful to me as anything in my life. Looking beyond our reach high in the sky, birds have feelings like human
beings, so do many other living things. We human beings should learn to get along well with them. We need eachother’s care and protection.
