Many have had the same thought as Shannon St. Onge when looking at the approach of snow on a weather
forecast-that they have time to finish their jobs. As the director of finance at the First Nations University of Canada,
she had to drive 25 kilometers from her home to the city of Regina to attend an important meeting.
As she was leaving, the winter snow began to fall. Taking a dirt road for better traction (牵引) on her tires,
she quickly became lost, with no ability to see the edge of the road from a rolled-down window. After a while she
stopped and called 911.
"The operator took my information and told me to wait out the storm as my tank was foil and I was warm. I
waited almost 14 hours and nobody has called me yet to check in,55 she wrote in a Face-book post.
“Would the gas tank last until morning? What if I was hit by another vehicle? What if I didn't make it home at
all?" St. Onge wondered.
Determined to ensure the safest end, she went out in the storm and discovered her location on a road sign, and
then found a neighborhood Facebook group for the area she was passing through-warning others of her plight
through a Google Maps pin.
That was when 80-year-old Andre Bouvier Sr., a retired rescuer, got a call about St. Onge's situation. He wentout to find her, on foot, since he couldn't manage to start his tractor.
On the way he found three other stranded (被困)vehicles. He walked the quarter mile there and back, and
led the helpless cars one by one to his home. Bouvier let the survivors sleep at his house, where they ate and
laughed, and departed the next morning after he had cleaned the driveway.
24. Why did St. Onge take a dirt road?
A. She was familiar with it.
B. She could refuel on the road.
C. She took the dirt road to save time.
D. She thought dirt road could increase traction.
25. What did the operator advise St. Onge to do?
A. Wait out the storm. B. Find a warm place.
C. Ask Bouvier for help.D. Write her condition in a Facebook post.
26. What does the underlined word "plight” in Paragraph 5 mean?
A. Wrong turn. B. Poor sense of direction.
C. Difficult situation. D. Bad weather.
27. Which of the following can best describe Bouvier?
A. Patient and gifted.
B. Brave and selfless.
C. Proud and determined.
D. Adventurous and ambitious.

It appears to fit with most people’s experience: how Christmas seems to come around quicker every year:
Questionnaires by psychologists have shown almost everyone feels time is passing faster now compared to when
they were half or a quarter as old. Most strikingly, lots of experiments have shown that, when older people are
asked to guess how long the time is, or to ‘reproduce’ the length of periods of time, they guess a shorter amount
than younger people.
In 1877, Paul Janet suggested the proportional theory, where a child of 10 feels a year as1/10 of his whole life
while a man of 50 as 1/50, so the subjective sense of the 50-year-old man is that these are insignificant periods of
time which gallop.
There are also biological theories. The speeding up of time is linked to how our metabolism(新陈代谢)gradually slows down as we grow older. Children’s hearts beat faster than adults’. They breathe more quickly. With
their blood flowing more quickly, their body clocks “cover”more time within the space of 24 hours than ours do as
adults. On the other hand, older people are like clocks that run slower than normal, so that they lag behind, and
cover less than 24 hours.
In the 1930s, the psychologist Hudson Hoagland found body temperature causes different perceptions of time.
Once, when he looked after his ill wife, he noticed she complained he’d been away for a long time even if only
away for a few moments. Therefore, Hoagland tested her perception of time at different temperatures, finding the
higher her temperature, the more time seemed to slow down for her, and that raising a person’s body temperature
can slow down his sense of time passing by up to 20%.
Time doesn’t necessarily have to speed up as we get older though. It depends on how we live our lives, and
how we relate to our experiences.
28. What do the questionnaires and experiments find?
A. Time now is shorter than before.
B. Aging makes people think slowly.
C. The old feel time flies faster than the young.
D. The old value time more than before.
29. What does the underlined word “gallop” in Paragraph 2 mean?
A. Fly swiftly. B. Pause briefly.
C. Move slowly. D. Pass stably.
30. According to Hudson Hoagland who may feel time go more slowly?
A. A kid with slower metabolism.
B A child with low body temperature.
C. A grown-up feeling freezing.
D. An adult with a high fever.
31. What is the best title for the passage?
A. How time flies!
B. To live a full life!
C. Why time passes at different speeds?
D. How to save more time?

(2021·广东冲刺联考)The German ship Polarstern is normally designed to break up heavy ice.But in September,2019,the ship set
sail from Norway with the goal of getting frozen into the Arctic ice cap for a year. The mission(任务) was part of a
$155 million project known as MOSAiC,led by Germany’s Alfred Wegener Institute(AWI),whose goal is to
learn more about the ice that forms near the North Pole. The ice cap here isn’t completely solid ,and it’s a
collection of floes—floating sheets of ice.As summer approaches, some of the ice melts and many floes break
free.
By October,2019,the ship was frozen into the Arctic ice north of Siberia. The mission wasn’t without its
challenges.First and most importantly, the Polarstern had to find an ice floe that is used as its primary research
base. The ice floe must be solid enough to anchor the ship and to support all the research equipment the scientists
needed to use. However, doing it proved easier said than done.Once the ship was frozen in place, the scientists
had to wrestle with the dangerous polar bears that were wandering around.Dealing with extreme cold was another
challenge. They also had to face the long and dark polar night,a period during winter when the sun doesn’t rise at
all in the central Arctic. In September,2020,the boat finally returned to Bremerhaven,Germany.
“We are watching the Arctic sea ice die,” said the mission’s leader,Markus Rex.The team reports that the
ice shelf is full of holes, and that the ice that remains is thin and melting.Recent satellite measurements support
that idea. The size of this year’s ice cap is the second smallest ever recorded.
Next comes the long process of studying all the data that was collected during the last year.Thomas
Krumpen, one of the scientists, said,“We’ll likely be busy with it over the next ten years.”
The scientists hope this abundant information will help them make better predictions about climate change.
32.What does MOSAiC try to do in the Arctic?
A.Protect the ice cap. B.Stop the ice melting.
C.Study the ice deeply. D.Break up heavy ice.
33.What was the biggest challenge for the scientists on the Polarstern?
A.Finding the right floe. B.Fighting the extreme cold.
C.Avoiding polar bears. D.Reducing the loneliness.
34.What is the author’s attitude towards the situations of the Arctic ice?
A.Carefree. B.Positive. C.Tolerant. D.Objective.
35.Which of the following best describes the journey to the Arctic?
A.Expensive. B.Confidential. C.Fruitful. D.Casual.第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)

A freezing downpour washed the street in front of the small-town bar. I sat gazing into the watery darkness,
alone as usual. I had been in that old bar for half an hour, quietly drinking, when my thoughtful eyes finally focused
on a medium-sized lump (一团) in a puddle (水洼) a hundred feet away. For another ten minutes, I looked out
through the window trying to decide if the lump was an animal or just something.
The night before, a German dog named Shep had come into the bar begging for potato chips. He was starving
and just the size of the lump in the puddle. Why should a dog lie in a cold puddle in the freezing rain? I asked
myself. The answer was simple: Either it wasn’t a dog, or it was, he was too weak to get up.
The wound in my right shoulder ached all the way down my fingers. I didn’t want to go out in the storm. Hey,
it wasn’t my dog. It was just a stray on a cold rainy night, a lonely drifter (流浪者). So was I, I thought, as I tossed
(扔) down what was left of my drink and headed out the door.
He was lying in the three inches of water. When I touched him, he didn’t move. I thought he was dead. I put
my hands around his chest and raised him to his feet. He stood unsteadily, and his head hung like a weight at the
end of his neck. His floppy ears were just hairless pieces of flesh dotted with open sores (伤口).
“Come on, Shep,” I said, leading him to a corner next to the bar, where he lay on the cold cement and closed
his eyes. A block away I could see the lights of a late-night convenience store. It was still open. I bought three cans
of dog food and fed him. He couldn’t swallow but poorly look at me. He was dying!
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150 左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
The local vet (兽医) was still at his office, so I loaded the poor creature into a taxi and headed there.
Three days later, when I opened the door of the vet’s, Shep welcomed me with wild enthusiasm.
