Celeste Ng, a new writer, has gained recognition for her first novel,
Everything I Never Told You.
Nag’s parents came from Hong Kong, China in the 1960s. Ng was born
in America and grew up in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and Shaker
Heights, Ohio, in a family of scientists. Celeste went to Harvard
University and earned an MFA from the University of Michigan, where she
won the Hopwood Award.
Although her novel is not about race, the characters are Asian. The
main character is Lydia, a teenage girl, who is the favorite of three
children born to a white mother and a Chinese-American father. The story is
about Lydia’s disappearance, and the emotions the family goes through as
the mystery unfolds. The whole family deals with sorrow, regret, and
exposed (暴露的) secrets as they search for their lost daughter.
Though the characters in this story are Asian, Ng says she didn’t really
want to include Asian characters. She was afraid people would think the story
was about real people in her life. Because she grew up in America and
doesn’t speak Chinese, she was actually surprised that she included Asian
characters in the book.
The book has taken off, especially on Amazon, where it won the
Editors Pick for No. 1 Best Book of the Year in 2014. Ng is still getting used
to the attention, saying she is still amazed when people tell her they have
read her book. With so many readers, it’s safe to say this is a book you

Most English-speaking children grow up with the same delightful set of
fictional characters. The Winnie the Pooh stories involve a strange selections
of animals such as a kangaroo, a pig, a donkey, a tiger, an owl and a
bear, who live together in a wood, leading fairy ordinary lives. Far more
exciting and dangerous events take place in The Wind in the Willows, the

Talking animals is also the main characters in The Jungle Book and the

Factory. While Wonk is the perfect adult in the eyes of children with all his

Baggins, the funny little hobbit (霍比特人), who ends up having

new star in the world of magic and children’s fiction is Harry Potter, the
schoolboy who learns spells (魔法) rather than math’s. Adventure books

As more Americans live alone, unconditional affection is in demand.
More than a third of homes have at least one dog, according to the
American Veterinary Medical Association.
But the popularity of four-legged friends has an unpleasant cost: Dogs
squeeze out more than twice the waste of the average person. Around 60%
of the stuff gets collected and trucked to landfills, where it releases
methane, a greenhouse gas. The rest delivers surprises to passersby and
can pollute waterways. The problem is particularly bad in cities, where green spaces are few
and lonely souls seeking puppy love plentiful. There are over 600,000 dogs
in New York—one for every 14 people—generating over 100,000 tons of
turd (糞便) a year.
This is a missed opportunity, says Ron Gonen, the city’s former
recycling tsar (掌权者). Now in the private sector, he is trying to launch
“Sparky Power”, a program to transform dog waste into clean energy in the
city’s dog parks.
The idea is to fit parks with small anaerobic digesters (厌氧分解池).
Dog owners would place their dogs turd into the machine, which then turns
turd into gas for powering lamps and other park equipment. A year-long pilot
would introduce digesters in three parks at a cost of around $100,000,
000. The parks department is thinking about the proposal.
Similar projects in other cities have proved short-lived. An underground
Energy Transformation Using Reactive Digestion (E-TURD) device
created by Arizona State University students for a dog park in Gilbert,
Arizona, in 2012 finally failed.
“It’s great to turn it into a biofuel, but first you have to pick it up,”
says Tom Boyd, an entrepreneur in Tennessee. His company, Poo
Prints, shames the owners of dogs who fail to clean up their messes by
testing DNA in uncollected turd.
