In my childhood, whenever I was being unreasonable, or questioning whatever direction my mother was
giving, she would say “I’m the momma and you’re the baby.” End of discussion. Until one day she asked me to do
something for her and I said, “No. You’re the momma; I’m the baby.” It gave her a good laugh.
But, at 31, I’m realizing the dynamic might be shifting. She’s the momma; I’m the baby. But I’m also
something else now. More will be asked of me to take care of her. My mother is getting older.
The realization hit me during a recent visit home. In my memory, our house wasn’t spotless, but I’d call it tidy.Weekends were for cleaning. Yet during this visit I was taken aback by piles upon piles of mail and papers and
junk. A fridge full of spoiled food. A mountain of clothes begging to be located. Was it always this way? When did
she become a hoarder (囤积者)? A symptom of aging?
But my mother would like you to know something: She is not a hoarder. She spoke frankly with more self
awareness than I expected about life and time and happiness. “The time that I have to go through those things
would be my weekends. Do I want to spend my Saturday afternoon going through all the junk? Or do I want to go
hang out with my friends? I think the latter. I don’t want to spend one minute of my free time doing anything that
doesn’t bring me joy,” she says.
It’s not that my mother has no worries about aging, but she came to terms with it long before. “Trey, you could
spend so much time worrying about things that aren’t perfect. Then time slips by, and they’re never going to be,”
she continues. “I think happiness is a moment-to-moment, day-to-day kind of thing. It’s not something you sustain.
I still think I’m hot—that might be in my head, but so that.”
24.What was the author’s tone in his response to Mom in paragraph 1?
A.Nervous B.Pleased. C.Unwilling. D.Sympathetic.
25.What made the author think Mom was a hoarder at first?
A.Her refusal to donate old stuff. B.The mess in Mom’s house.
C.Her preference for an economical life. D.The decline of Mom’s health.
26.Why didn’t Mom tidy the house on weekends?
A.She had plans with her friends. B.She was too old to do it on her own.
C.She desired a pleasant time for herself. D.She had trouble sorting out the junk.
27.Which of the following can best describe Mom’s current life principle?
A.Never say die. B.Live in the present.
C.Tomorrow is another day. D.Better late than never.

Ever wonder how this season’s celebrations affect the environment? Guest blogger Krista Fairles takes an
amusing look at this very topic.
The holidays are a wonderful, cheerful time when most people wait for Santa to bring them presents. But I’m
not like most people. I spend my time wondering just what the environmental impacts of Santa Claus and his
reindeer are, and more importantly, how I can calculate those impacts.
Lately I’ve been particularly curious as to whether Santa’s old sled is a clean green flying machine, or if heshould be replacing his 8 reindeer with an environmentally-friendly car.
I should mention that, surprisingly, I was unable to find statistics specific to Santa’s magical flying reindeer, so
these calculations use numbers from various sources and may not represent actual pollution caused by Santa and his
animals. In other words, don’t complain to the govenment about the damage Santa is causing the environment
based on this article.
Santa’s yearly trip around the globe is 44,000km long, twice the average of a North American driver. If we
assume that the magic provides the altitude for this trip, then reindeer power only needs to push Santa’s sled
forward. To complete the trip in 12 hours, I estimate they must travel at a speed of about 3100 km/h. To travel at
this speed, for this length of time, the reindeer need to eat an incredible 980 million calories each!
So the next question is: how much food is in 980 million calories? Well, if they’re eating corn, they’d need to
eat 16, 500 lbs each-or 1.6 acres of food. Growing 12.8 acres of corn has its own implications for the environment
that we’ll leave for another calculation.
We now need to consider that during the global trip the reindeer are “letting out” some of that corn in the form
of methane. A resting cow produces 110 kg of methane per year, so flying reindeer would each let out about 4.8
tons. With methane causing 20 times the global warming damage of CO2, and the altitude increasing that damage
by 1000% that another 20 times, we can put Santa’s round-trip emissions at 15,488 tons. This is much more than
the 100 tons an environmentally-friendly car would release on the same trip!
Bad Santa.
28.According to Paragraph 6, how many acres of corn would Santa need to feed 10 reindeer?
A.1.6. B.16. C.12.8. D.128.
29.Which of the following statements would the writer most probably agree with?
A.Christmas celebrations are really a waste of money.
B.Vegetarians are more likely to survive than meat-eaters.
C.Raising animals has a negative influence on environment.
D.The car industry does less harm to environment than farming.
30.Which of the following words best describes the language style of the passage?
A.Serious and boring. B.Cheerful and friendly.
C.Academic and formal. D.Humorous and concerned.
31.Which of the following is the best title for this passage?
A.Is Santa driving clean and green?B.Santa, watch where you’re going!
C.Santa Claus is coming to town!
D.Let’s reduce waste on Christmas celebrations!

Ten percent of the world’s species live in the Amazon Rainforest, including some of the most interesting and
unique creatures on Earth. Not only that, but some Amazon native species directly benefit humans. If you like
chocolate, and coffee, you’ve benefited from Amazonian plants. Even more importantly, the Amazon Rainforest
keeps our air clean and breathable.
Cognizant of its great impact on the planet, activists are working to stop deforestation. A new algorithm (算
法) that predicts which areas are at most risk of habitat destruction gives Amazon defenders a hand in their fight
against deforestation.
The Trans-Amazonian highway is a road that stretches across the Amazon Rainforest. Branching off of this
official highway are around two million miles of unofficial roads, many built illegally by loggers, miners, and
residents of unauthorized settlements. Nearly half of the rainforest has one of these roads, which Carlos Souza Jr, a
researcher monitoring the Amazon, calls “lines of destruction”, within six miles. Imazon, a Brazilian research
institution published a study showing that 95 percent of deforestation occurred within three miles of the “lines of
destruction”. Additionally, 90 percent of forest fires were next to illegal Amazonian roads. That makes finding these
roads key to preventing deforestation and damage. However, in a two and half million square rainforest, that’s
easier said than done. Previously activists manually (人工地) examined over satellite images to spot these roads.
They also recorded the result of deforestation. But now, technology may help activists become more proactive (主
动出击的).
Imazon researchers fed the manual data into an artificial intelligence algorithm to train it to find the
unauthorized roads. The program predicts where there may be roads, with about 70 percent accuracy. Its outputs are
then confirmed by researchers using satellite images.
The PrevisIA map and statistics can help governments channel deforestation prevention efforts to threatened
areas. The hope is that by identifying the areas in advance, politicians and activists can take proactive steps against
the illegal roads, and prevent deforestation before it happens.
32.What does the underlined phrase “Cognizant of” in Paragraph 2 mean?
A.Causing. B.Realizing. C.Recalling. D.Multiplying.
33.What can we know from the third paragraph?A.Many illegal loggers will be punished. B.There exist many risks near the highway.
C.Forest fires did little damage to the rainforest.D.Fund is the key to constructing this highway.
34.How did Imazon researchers identify the unauthorized roads?
A.Through locals.B.Through the map. C.Through field trips. D.Through technology.
35.In which section may the text appear in a newspaper?
A.Culture. B.Travel. C.Education. D.Environment.

Helping Your Kids to Be Interested in Sports
Being active and moving is something that is so important for us all, especially for children. 36
However, some parents can feel shocked when they see that their child isn’t interested in sports. So how can you
encourage them to have ago?
It is such a good idea to lead by example when you are a parent. This is true for a variety of aspects, but
especially forgetting children involved in sport. 37 So you need to be someone who is interested and
active, if you want any hope of them doing so too. If you lay on the couch all day then they will just learn to do that
too.
38 Although they can choose who they want to support, seeing your enthusiasm for a particular
player or team can be just what is needed to start their journey. You could look for a team uniform store to get them
a sports shirt with their name on for example, as well as see the team play at one of their games. 39
If something is dull, it will be hard for children to be enthusiastic about it. This will make them resent(讨厌) it,
which is not a good thing for later in life. If they show particular skill and learn to play sport, then more practice
and training can come in. 40 When they can enjoy what they do, they will only see it as something fun
to do, rather than what we as adults might see it as, such as a chore to burn calories.
Whatever sport your child chooses to play, encourage them and make it fun, and then it will be something that
they will want to carry on doing as they go about the rest of their lives.
A.They won’t be interested in sports if you’re not.
B.here are some other tips that you would share with them.
C.Share your enthusiasm and it will help to lighten a passion.
D.So think about ways that can get them to be active in the sports.
E.How active a child is will impact their overall health and learning.
F.Apart from leading by example, you could also share your favorite team.G.However, the main message forgetting children into sport is to keep it fun.

第二节 书面表达 (满分25分)
阅读下面材料, 根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段, 使之构成一篇完整的短文。
When I was in middle school, my social studies teacher asked me to enter a writing contest. I said no without
thinking. I did not love writing. My family came from Brazil, so English was only my second language. Writing
was so difficult and painful for me that my teacher had allowed me to present my paper on the sinking of the
Titanic by acting out a play, where I played all the parts. No one laughed harder than he did.
So, why did he suddenly force me to do something at which I was sure to fail? His reply: “Because I love your
stories. If you’re willing to apply yourself, I think you have a good shot at this.” Encouraged by his words, I agreed
to give it a try.
I chose Paul Revere’s horse as my subject. Paul Revere was a silversmith (银匠) in Boston who rode a horse at
night on April 18, 1775 to Lexington to warn people that British soldiers were coming. My story would come
straight from the horse’s mouth. Not a brilliant idea, but funny; and unlikely to be anyone else’s choice.
What did the horse think, as he sped through the night? Did he get tired? Have doubts? Did he want to quit? I
sympathized immediately. I got tired. I had doubts. I wanted to quit. But, like Revere’s horse, I kept going. I
worked hard. I checked my spelling. I asked my older sister to correct my grammar. I checked out a half dozen
books on Paul Revere from the library. I even read a few of them.
When I handed in the essay to my teacher, he read it, laughed out loud, and said, “Great. Now, write it again.”
I wrote it again, and again and again. When I finally finished it, the thought of winning had given way to the
enjoyment of writing. If I didn’t win, I wouldn’t care.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150个左右;
