On the fourth or fifth night,we had trouble finding a hotel with a vacancy. After driving in vain for
some time,Mom suddenly got a great idea:Why didn’t we find a house with a likely-looking backyard and ask if
we could set up a tent there? David and I became nervous.
Then Mac heard quick and loud breathing behind him...he saw instantly that it wasn’t a dog at all,
but a wolf, quickly catching up with him.Mac’s heart jumped...he fired the spray at the wolf.A bright red cloud
enveloped the animal,and to Mac’s relief,it fell back,shaking its head.But a minute later...Then it...,tearing
open his tent bag.He fired at the wolf a second time, and again,it fell back...
The car abruptly stopped in front of him.“Get into the car.” Paul shouted at Mac.Mac jumped off the
bike and slid into the car without delay as the wolf was just two steps away and was about to tear Mac into
pieces.What a narrow escape!
But no more helicopters came and it was getting dark again.Jane was so
tired, hungry, and extremely frightened. She thought to herself,“If only I had not quarrelled with Tom.Where
is Tom? He must have made the emergency call. What I need is enough courage. If I continue my spirits tomorrow,
I will be likely to guide the helicopter.” Lying beside the stream, she fell asleep very soon.Suddenly, she heard
the shouts of tigers, which made her scared to death. After she held her breath for a few minutes, everything was
quiet again.In the terrible darkness,she slept again.【分析】夫妇争吵——妻子独自行走——荒野走散,夜色渐黑——独处森林——阴森恐怖——后悔莫

Most people think that procrastination (拖延症) is a negative habit. But people like me who routinely put off
doing assignments, are likely to defend our “slower” approach to getting tasks done.
I'm the only procrastination in my family. My parents and sister were all born with the “do it right now” gift.
They are always in a rush, as if closely rushed by an invisible deadline. Personally, I prefer a more relaxed pace.
When my parents voiced their concern about my tendencies, saying “Don’t put off until tomorrow what you can do
today,” “No way!” I responded, confidently presenting my research as a defense. It said people procrastinated when
they need to solve a problem or commit to a topic or project. In these cases, delaying a decision can be beneficial.
This was because our minds continue to reflect on problems even when we were not actively thinking about them,
which could lead to more creative solutions. My findings filled me with satisfaction and pride. My method of
getting things done was just as good as my sister’s…or so I thought.
At school we’d been talking about architecture and design. As part of the final assessment my teacher Mr.
Smith announced an exciting project that each student would have a month to complete. We were expected to
choose our materials, construct a small building and make use of things we had learned in class. Not only would the
winners receive extra credit, but the winning constructions would be proudly displayed in the cafeteria. “I have no
clue how I could get it done,” my friend Nate sighed in despair. I didn’t say anything. Not because I shared his
anxiety-but because I was not nervous at all. I loved hands-on projects! Picturing my brilliant work exhibited in the
cafeteria, I was fully convinced that I would definitely produce something that could impress everyone. So relaxed
was I that I didn’t give it a second thought for weeks.

Beavis was a rescue cat who came to our family from a broken home. At the time, I remember thinking that
his attitude just might have been responsible for the break. His first three days in our house were spent under a bed
hissing (发出威胁的嘶嘶声) and spitting at anyone brave enough to approach him. Even the non-threatening offer
of food or water provoked an aggressive response.
Eventually, after a number of weeks and a lot of patience, Beavis deigned (屈尊) to be in the same room as
other family members, as long as he was given his space and wasn't approached directly.
His first visit to the vet was a nightmare. The poor man had to wear a thick leather apron and industrial-grade
gloves before giving Beavis a routine examination. After the visit, the vet wrote in his notes that Beavis was a “very
difficult” animal to deal with. At least he didn't ask us to change vets.
It was my bright idea to get him some companionship. Drawing on my “vast experience” as a cat person, I
thought the cure for his antisocial behaviour would be some cat company. The second mistake I made was in
encouraging my daughter and her friend to be the ones to choose a barn kitten from a local farmer. As it turned out,
they couldn't decide which one to pick, so they compromised by choosing two kittens.
It turned out that Beavis didn't need cat company, but rather came into his own as a kitten bully. The little
guys were threatened at every turn. We had gone from a one-catastrophe family to three. Beavis was unable to share
food or even toilet facilities with the kittens. We spent more time keeping them apart than watching them interact. It
looked as though we were destined to suffer long-term cat problems.
One day, Beavis was strutting (趾高气扬地走) his stuff through a particularly well-fitting door in our
basement.

One very cold day, not long ago, in Edinburgh, I was standing at the door of a hotel. A little boy with a thin
blue face, his feet bare and red with the cold, and with nothing to cover him but a bundle of rags, came to them and
said, “Please, sir, buy some matches.” “No, I don’t want any.” answered one of the gentlemen. “But they are only a
penny a box.” pleaded the poor little fellow. “Yes, but, you see, I don’t want a box.” I said again. “Then I will give
you two boxes for a penny.” the boy said.
At last, I decided to buy a box to get rid of him. Then, finding I had no change, I said to him, “I will buy a
box tomorrow.” “Oh, please buy them tonight.” the boy pleaded again, “ I will run and get you the change, for I am
very hungry.” So I gave him the shilling, and he started away. I waited for him, but no boy came. I thought I had
lost my shilling. still, there was something in the boy’s face I trusted, and I did not like to think bad of him.
Late in the evening I was told that a little boy wanted to see me. I found, when he was brought in, it was a
smaller brother of the boy who took my shilling. He stood for a moment, diving into his rags as if he were seeking
something, and then said, “Are you the gentleman who bought the matches from Sandy.” “Yes.” “Well, then, hereare four pence out of your shilling. Sandy cannot come. He’s very sick. A cart ran over him and knocked him down.
He lost his cap and matches and seven pence of your money. Both his legs were broken, and the doctor says he’ll
die. My brother and I lived almost alone, for our father and mother were dead”

This…was turning out to be a strange meeting. Though the one in black doesn’t know it, the one white is
beginning to share the darker girl’s lack of enthusiasm. Like a fire in a sudden chill wind, her hope flickers and
wanes. Now she grows uncomfortable, anxious, and wary. A slight but unshakable atmosphere drifts between them,
one that feels unmistakably off. To her, it seems as though their very meeting is something the world finds to be
simply…“wrong”. The ever-present glass, now scattered unevenly throughout and above the broken grounds,
reflects that strange feeling.
Ordinarily, these shards would flock to them without their bidding:“happiness”to the girl in white,
“tragedies” to the girl in black. Right now, every piece of glass in the air stands still. Perhaps half a hundred mirrors
are quietly
suspended around the girls, half-catching images of the empty place that surrounds them. When the girl in
white tries to call out to them, they will not even waver. It unsettles her:happiness placed beside horror, equallyglinting and equally motionless. The only piece that will follow her is the one she can hold—the one that set her
free.
She stares hard at the shadow girl.“If we’re in this together, ”she begins, leaning forward, “then what do you
think about staying together? We…We could help each other, and maybe…”
She stops. The other girl is staring into the empty, canvas-like sky with a blank and uninformative
expression. She doesn’t seem to be listening, but in truth she has followed every word.

1.
Para.1 Before I knew it. I had only one day left for the project. In a panic I hastily and quickly gluing together what
I pulled out from our recycle bin, my hands shaking with the weight of each hasty decision. The finished result
looked miserable. Several of my classmates, including Nate, had created amazingly detailed constructions. Theyused materials like clay, wood and so on and were highly praised by Mr. Smith. When I saw their models, I felt
even more embarrassed about mine. It was obvious that they had put a lot more time into the assignment than I had.
Para.2 That taught me a great lesson. I learnt from that day the importance of deciding on my priorities and
budgeting my time. From then on, I tackled things a lot earlier instead of putting things off until tomorrow. As a
result, not only did I finish my tasks on time, but also I felt better because I didn’t have to panic at the last minute.
At the end of the semester, my work was chosen by Mr Smith on another occasion. Seeing my change, my parents
and my sister were so proud of me. It dawned on me that getting things done on time instead of being a
procrastinator really counted.

He was not quite through when the door closed sharply on his tail. He let out a bone-chilling cry and took off
to the farthest part of the house. We managed to corner him and rushed him off to the vet. The vet performed
emergency surgery on him. Every day, I visited, feeding Beavis nutritious food and treats, hoping he would regain
strength. Under my meticulous care, Beavis recovered faster than expected and was allowed to go home. When I
picked him up, Beavis was no longer aggressive. He walked straight over to me, nuzzling and licking my hand in
gratitude.
From then on, I lost a fierce cat and gained “a soft ball of fur”. His nature changed completely. Now he
interacted well with all the family. He was a reformed cat. Whenever I watched television, he would sit at my feet
and purr loudly. I will never be sure whether it was the shock of the tail incident or my meticulous care that
changed his attitude. Happily, with his new outlook, he was with us for many years.
