13.
A. A newly-established singing group in Wales.
B. The connection between cancer and stress relief.
C. An alternative to traditional cancer treatments.
D. Supportive effects of singing on cancer sufferers.
C 12. B 13. D
This isn’t a typical singing practice. And it’s not held in a traditional practice space. These singers are all
dealing with cancer, theirs or their loved one’s. Rosie Dow, who leads the singing groups at Tenovus Cancer Care in
the UK said, “There are people in our groups who are undergoing treatment right now. There are some people who
are waiting for treatment.”
Virtually, chorus members have said that singing loudly makes them feel good. But Dow and her colleagueswanted to see if that psychological effect might translate to a biological effect. So they selected five singing groups
in Wales—with a total of 193 singers—and took samples both before and after an hour of singing. They found that
singers had significantly lower levels of the stress hormone after singing together, along with an increase in
proteins called cell genes—which the researchers say might suggest a boost in immune activity.
It’s still not clear whether these biochemical changes translate to any better outcome for patients. And singing
practice is in addition to—not instead of— traditional treatments. Dow said, “We wouldn’t recommend it as an
alternative to surgery or any of the other traditional cancer treatments, but in terms of people’s mental health, this
might be a good complement to the treatment that they’re having.”

Question:
Who are the members in this singing group?
What did Dow and her colleagues find in their study?

D 15. A 16. C
All around the world, for over 4,000 years, garlic has played many important roles in our daily lives.
Many countries grow garlic today, like China, Egypt, Spain, etc. Garlic originates from the desert region of Siberia,
where the summers are dry and hot. In order to survive, the wild garlic plant had to adapt to this harsh climate.
Garlic had to grow when there was moisture, in the spring and fall, and it also had to be able to survive without
water for the exceptionally dry summer and winter months. Once discovered by humans, it is no wonder that garlicquickly became important crop of almost every civilization in the world.
The ancient Egyptians fed it to slaves building the pyramids to increase their toughness. In ancient Greece and
Rome, garlic was claimed to have more uses such as treating dog bites. In the Middle Ages, soldiers returning to
Europe after faraway battles were generally credited with bringing garlic back with them, for it was thought to
prevent the epidemic. Garlic was so prized in ceremony and ritual, and it’s said that lambs offered for sacrifice in
China were seasoned with garlic to make them more pleasing to the gods.

M: Hello, Jessica.
W: Today we are talking about something we must all have an opinion on—it’s cinema manners. What do you think
it is?
M: I think it is what is the right way to behave when you go to see a film at the cinema.
W: You mean how we behave there is different from how we behave when we’re watching a film at home.
M: Yes, but some people seem to forget that, don’t they? Some people even treat the cinema like their own houses.
W: They forget other people are sitting around them. What do you think is unbearable?
M: People eating really annoys me—I hate the rustle of sweet wrappers and the crackle of a crisp packet. It’s messy
too.
W: That’s really disturbing. Anything else?
M: A new low was reached, as the woman in front of me gets the phone out...
W: Standard thing, such as sending messages that kind of stuff.
M: But she then has an app on her phone which turns her phone into a mirror, OK. And then with her colleague’s
torch app on their phone, she proceeds to do her makeup during the movie!
W: That, my friend, is unbelievable!
M: It’s bad manners and I wonder why she even bothered going to the cinema.
W: Oh, I don’t think mobile phones at the cinema are a good idea.
M: When I go to see a film, all I want is a comfortable seat and to be able to see and hear the film. I don’t want
distractions!
W: Yes, I can’t agree with you more. To really appreciate the surround-sound and clear digital projection you need a
well-behaved audience.
(Now listen again, please.)

Too Good To Go
Around the country, apps that connect customers to businesses with leftover food have begun to spread. The
___31___ is simple: Restaurants and grocery stores throw away huge amounts of food every day. Rather than
___32___ it, apps like Too Good To Go and Flashfood help businesses sell it at a reduced price. They claim that the
businesses and buyers are helping the environment because the food would otherwise become food waste, a bigcontributor to climate change.
In the United States, customers in 12 cities can look through restaurants and stores on Too Good To Go, then
reserve “surprise bags” that typically cost about $4 to $6 and contain food that would have been ___33___ at
roughly three times that amount.
Several food waste experts expressed ___34___ that these types of apps could help limit the amount of wasted
food. And even though charitable organizations often redirect unwanted food from restaurants and grocery stores to
food banks and community kitchens, there’s space for all of these kinds of solutions to ___35___.
One complication is that, according to interviews with several companies selling on Too Good To Go, at least
a few items for sale there aren’t ___36___ what buyers might think of as “food waste.” The owner of a Baltimore

“little samples.” A beer company owner said he used the app to sell ___38___ products, but also sold new flavors
there in hopes of attracting new customers.

After five long years, it appears California’s drought is finally becoming less severe. ___41___ a recent string
of storms, more than a third of the state has now welcomed healthy precipitation (降水量), and California’s
snowpack—a(n) ___42___ source of water as the year progresses—has reached nearly twice its seasonal average in

drought; restoring them could take years in some places, says Jones.
The quick inrush of water has also created a(n) ____52____ balancing act for water managers. Keeping

levels would likely continue to rise. That’s a calculation that will be made across the state in the coming months.
For now, though, Jones is focused on planning and ensuring the state’s water supply whatever may happen.

A. Or else要不然;B. In other words换言之;C. At that point 就在那时;D.
Above all总之。根据本句“a storm slowdown is a very real possibility—and it could leave California without
enough water to make it through the dry summer.
“when that happens, the state has turned to groundwater stored in natural rock formations deep beneath the earth’s

“Historically, when that happens, the state has turned to groundwater stored in natural rock formations deep
beneath the earth’s surface.
根据下文“Keeping surface reservoirs (水库) filled to the edge protects against the possibility of a sudden dry spell, but it
also heightens the risk of flooding if and when future storms hit.

A notable highlight of the show was the real confidence of the
singing. Sam Hall was a joy to watch, with perfect comic timing, as was
Emma Williams, thoroughly believable and convincing in her role. These
two young talents stole the show, in my opinion. The only disadvantage
is appointments were the dancing, which showed a lack of originality, and
the opening scene, which fell a little flat. Despite the occasional technical
flaws, this was a highly enjoyable and greatly impressive production,
which the company should be proud of.
I was really looking forward to Jonathan Baker’s latest, which is set
in an imagined, but realistic, London of the scar future. But I found this
new effort was act down by the slightly one-dimensional characterization,
and the writing is below standard for the most part : some of the early
scents between Martha and her husband are slightly boring. The superb
characterization and ambition that baker demonstrated in his previous
novels seem to be missing here. Baker’ commitment to describing the
lives of ordinary people is admirable, but the whole thing is lacking in
energy.
This is episode number three in the nearly twenty-year-old series,
delivering a very attractive and interesting story and loads of comedy.
There is some strong writing and voice acting, but the new episode
chooses to go for a linear (线性的) narrative, with some puzzle included
along the way, which is less involving than the theme of exploration and
conversation which previous episode have depended on. Besides, the
puzzle are not particularly engaging, and many of them have been seen
before in other adventure games. The visuals are extremely impressive, of
course, as we have come to expect, this time featuring venues in
Catalonia. But overall, a slight disappointment.
60. The underlined phrase “ stole the show ” most probably means______.
A. disappointed the producer B. ruined the whole performance
C. attracted the most attention D. exhibited excessive confidence

A. He excels in one-dimensional characterization.
B. His novels center around ordinary people’s lives.
C. His novels show consistent super characterization and ambition.
D. He is passionate about presenting realistic images of future London.62. The puzzle in episode number three______.
A. are integrated in the narrative B. arc appealing to the audience

Research into language learning and motivation has changed direction over the past two decades, shifting from
what are now considered overly-simplistic models of motivation, such as “integrativeness” (where students are
motivated to learn an L2 because they wish to join a community that speaks this language) and “instrumentalism”
(where motivation comes from a desire for financial or some other sort of return). Motivation to learn has now been
linked to a second-language identity, which is not conceptualised as static, but dynamic, shifting and open to
change. Some research studies have focused on investment in ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages)
settings in English-speaking countries: how students invest in the target language in order to get certain returns, not
only financial but also related to status, an idea which Bonny Norton Peirce notes as having been borrowed from
the sociologist Pierre Bourdieu. There is also growing research in the area of “future selves” and language learning,
such as that by Zoltán Dörnyei and Ema Ushioda and by Jill Hadfield.
Studies into second language identity have revealed the investment committed to building up an identity inEnglish in the lives of economic migrants (移民) and those choosing to settle long-term in English-speaking
countries. David Block conducted research into economic migrants living in London, revealing how they invest
through study opportunities, seeking out locals to speak to, or using English in work. Each of his case studies
reveals different features and patterns in these subjects’ lives.
Yet it is also true that second-language identity formation is alive in EFL (English as a Foreign Language)
contexts, if I may draw a distinction from the ESOL further-education context (in the UK and the US). In an age of
globalisation and internationalisation, the role of English has come into much sharper focus, and such a changed
global reality poses new questions about motivation to learn. Dörnyei argues that we are now dealing with “global
English”, and that its acquisition is related to building up “a global identity”. I put the case that international
English language examinations, such as those offered by Cambridge English, are a powerful symbol of cultural
capital, offering returns full of imagery and entry to imagined communities. Imagined communities, it has been
argued, are imagined personal networks of the future, whether social, professional or even international. Investment
and the motivation to learn can spring from the desire to belong to these imagined communities. How this imagery
and investment relates to their own students should be something that teachers become familiar with.

Is Binge-watching the New Addiction?
Have you ever loved a TV show? I mean really loved it? Like, you can’t wait to get to work to talk about it?
What about the cliffhanger? That’s the unsolved situation at the end of the episode which makes you want to watch
the next one. But, when will the next one be?
Binge-watching is when a person watches more than one episode of a show quickly. With developments in the
speed and connectivity of the internet, increases in technology and the rise of on-demand entertainment companies,
people can now have their favourite shows streamed directly to their television at their convenience.
However, this amazing gift may in fact be harmful. Recent research from British media watchdog Ofcom (英
国通信管理局) finds that out of the more than half of British adults who watch more than one episode of a showback-to-back, almost a third have admitted missing sleep or becoming tired as a result; and one quarter have
neglected their housework. Next we’ll be missing work!
Bingeing has other connections — binge eating, binge drinking and binge smoking, all of which are often
associated with compulsive behaviour, a lack of control and a possible route to addiction. If people find binge-
watching hard to resist, coupled with the fact that it has shown to lead to failure of attention in many, are we
witnessing the birth of a new type of addiction?
The numerous information and entertainment that television and online media can bring us is, many would
say, a good thing. However, like any behaviour done to extremes, it can become dangerous. And when the activity
begins to enter other areas, causing us to stop functioning — then it becomes a problem. So, what’s the answer?
Moderation! Neither a tiny amount, nor too much. After all, as the old proverb says, a little of what you fancy does
you good.
