Here are some books written by Joyce Grant.
Can You Believe It
Publisher: Kids Can Press
Published in 2022, it explores in depth how real journalism is made, what false news is,
and most importantly, how to spot the difference. It gives readers context they can use, such
as how bias(偏见) can come into news reporting secretly. Young kids get most of their
information online. This must-read guide helps them decide which information they can trust
and which they can’t.
Gabby: Drama Queen
Publisher: Fitzhenry & Whiteside Publishing
It was published three years later than Tagged Out. Little kid Gabby and her friend Roy

When Virginia Norwood was in high school in the 1940s, her guidance teacher advised
her to become a librarian instead of a physicist. Luckily, she ignored him. “I was always
enthusiastic about mathematical problems and physics, ” said Norwood. Also, her father, an
electrical engineer, was very important to her. By 1972, Norwood, a Massachusetts Institute
of Technology graduate and engineer at Hughes Aircraft Company, had designed a vital
component of Landsat 1, the first satellite launched into space to monitor Earth’s surface.
Satellites in the Landsat series still provide valuable data to scientists worldwide and Landsat
9 was successfully launched on 27 September, 2021, almost 50 years after the first one.
Norwood’s contribution was the multispectral scanner (多光谱扫描仪) 一 a sensor that
could be calibrated while in space to accurately detect red, green, and infrared (红外线的)
energy reflected from Earth and could transmit (传输) data digitally to researchers on the
ground. The scanner enabled scientists to track forest loss, crop productivity, and the spread
of deserts, and to map inaccessible features of Earth’ s physical structures such as glaciers and
ice sheets. “She cleared the way for an entire generation of. . . Earth observation instruments,
” says NASA’s Jeffrey Masek, a Landsat project scientist.
Norwood’s device was included in the first several satellites launched through the
Landsat program, a joint effort by NASA and the US Geological Survey. Other satellites have
since surpassed the Landsat series in resolution and scanning abilities, but the continuity of
the Landsat database over the decades makes it a gold standard in Earth imaging.24.What inspired Norwood to pursue physics?

C.Her guidance teacher’s advice.
D.Her enthusiasm about the Landsat program.
25.What does the underlined word “calibrated” in paragraph 2 mean?

A robot created at Stanford University in California is diving down to shipwrecks (沉船)
and sunken planes in a way that humans can’t do. Known as OceanOneK, the robot allows its
operators to feel like they’re underwater explorers, too. OceanOneK resembles a human diver
from the front, with arms and hands and eyes that have 3D vision, capturing the underwater
world in full color. The back of the robot has computers and eight multidirectional thrusters
that help it carefully explore the sites of fragile sunken ships. When an operator at the ocean’s
surface uses controls to direct OceanOneK, the robot’s touch-based feedback system causes
the person to feel the water’s resistance as well as the forms of artifacts (人工制品).
OceanOneK’s realistic sight and touch capabilities are enough to make people feel like
they’re diving down to the depths-without the dangers or immense underwater pressure a
human diver would experience.
The idea for OceanOneK came from a desire to study coral reefs in the Red Sea at
depths beyond the normal range for divers. While OceanOneK was designed to reach
maximum depths of 656 feet, researchers had a new goal: 1 kilometer, hence the new name
for OceanOneK.
The researchers changed the robot’s body by using special foam to increase buoyancy(浮力) and fight the pressures of 1, 000 meters-more than 100 times what humans experience
at sea level. OceanOneK also got two new types of hands and increased arm and head motion.
During OceanOneK’s deep dive in February, team members discovered the robot
couldn’t rise when they stopped for a thruster cheek. Flotations on the communications and
power line had collapsed, causing the line to pile on the top of the robot.
They were able to pull in the slack, and OceanOneK’s descent was a success. It dropped
off a memorial marker on the seabed that reads, “A robot’s first touch of the deep seafloor A
vast new world for humans to explore. ”
Khatib, a professor, called the experience an “incredible journey”. “This is the first time
that a robot has been capable of going to such a depth, interacting with the environment and
permitting the human operator to feel that environment. ” he said.
28.What do we know about OceanOneK?
A.It has colorful eyes.
B.It is remotely controlled.
C.It is like a human all over.
D.It explores underwater world itself.
29.What is the original idea for OceanOneK?
A.To find out the mystery of the ocean.
B.To save passengers from sunken planes.
C.To collect treasures from shipwrecks.
D.To research coral reefs in deep oceans.
30.What is wrong with OceanOneK in February?
A.It failed to rise normally.
B.It lost louch with the operators.
C.It collapsed and piled at the seafloor.
D.It floated away with sea currents.
31.What is a suitable title for the text?
A.Robots help people become ocean explorers.
B.Robots explore shipwrecks on the ocean bottom.
C.Robots search the ocean floor for sunken treasures.
D.Robots dive into the deep ocean to locate minerals.

When you think about it, food is an important part of our lives. Family gatherings center
around food and the celebration of major life events and milestones involves food in one wayor another. The same holds true for us here on the Space Station. Food is important and ends
up usually being a topic of discussion for almost every crew.
The food that we have here on ISS has to meet many different requirements. What about
variety? How do you meet all of the peculiarities of the people that you come across,
especially when they are from different cultures? What about the logistics(物流)of getting the
right food here at the right time? So there are a couple of different questions you have to
consider when you talk about food and long-duration space flight.
On the U.S. side we have gone to a standard menu, meaning that every 16 days you start
over with the same menu. To compensate the crews, we are allowed to pick
one“preference”container which consists of our pick of anything on the U. S. menu list. This
allows us some variety in our menu, with the choices up to us. One of the desirable options
for any crew is to make sure that enough tortillas(墨西哥玉米粉薄饼) get on board. You can
do so much with a tortilla; it becomes the vehicle with which to eat almost anything.
Our food also comes packaged in many ways. But no matter what the form of the food
though, you still have the same problem eating it- - you do not want it flying away from you
and making a mess when you open it up. In this case a little bit of extra water is extremely
helpful. It keeps the food kind of sticking together and to the package and to your spoon.
Small things do escape from time to time, but we really try hard to minimize the random
flying food problem. That is enough for now! Next time I will write about how to cook in
space.
32.Where is the text most probably taken from?
A.A food magazine. B.An astronaut’s journal.
C.A sci-fi handbook. D.A space history website.
33.What does the underlined word “peculiarities“ mean in paragraph 2?
A.Ambitious targets. B.Similar requests.
C.Unusual habits. D.Harsh conditions.
34.What is the author’ s purpose in mentioning tortillas?
A.To illustrate the preference container . B.To give an example of standard menu.
C.To advocate tortillas to the readers. D.To show the variety of food options.
35.What can be inferred about eating in space?
A.Food packaging is optional. B.Sufficient water helps transport food.
C.Flying food problem is unavoidable. D.Eating in space is easier than most

Mental Health Crisis Among Teens Demands a New Approach
Since the CDC released its survey results last month showing alarmingly high rates of
sadness and depressive thoughts among teens, fingers have been pointed from two sides at the
causes of this crisis. 36 . Others say that today’s more secular(世俗的)culture has
confused our most vulnerable young people. But neither side seems to grasp the true urgency
of the issue.
According to the CDC’s findings, more than one in five of the 17,000 high school
students surveyed reported mental breakdown. Their rates of sadness and hopelessness are the
highest in a decade, reflecting an increasing trend exacerbated by society’s isolation(隔离)and
stress. 37 .
Parents as well as teachers and others who have direct contact with children must accept
this preventive approach. It is crucial that they not be afraid to ask direct questions about
depressive thoughts. 38 . It is also especially important that parents understand what
help is available to their children.
39 . For example, we can demand equity equality, which means insurance
coverage(保险范围)for behavioral illnesses health issues that is for physical , thus reducing
the financial burden. We can also urge our congressmen to fund health programs and expand
mental health professions. 40 . Put the politics aside. There are lives in the balance.
A.And they should resist the false idea that raising a question creates a risk that was
not there before.
B.This means that we must put aside our disagreements and approach this issue as a
matter of life and death.
C.Some have argued that the climate issue has created an existential threat and
accompanying anxiety.
D.Hospitalization may also be appropriate when the person in question shows an
immediate danger to themselves.
E.At the macro(宏观的)level, our country can do so much more to help people
struggling with mental health problems and their families.
F.It’s time to stop blaming and turn our attention to this generation of struggling
teenagers.G.It’s time for those who have the power to amplify(放大)their voices and drive
change to focus on helping teenagers and families access the help they need.

Since 1960, considerable scientific researches have been done on chimps in their natural
habitats. Astonishingly, scientists have found out that the social 41 of Chimps are
very similar to humans. Chimps will 42 in certain ways, like gathering together to
protect their land. But beyond the minimum requirements as social beings, they have little
instinct (本能) to 43 one another. Chimps in the wild seek food for themselves.
Even chimp mothers regularly 44 to share food with their children. Who are able
from a young age to gather their own food?
In the laboratory, chimps don’t 45 share food either. If a chimp is put in a cage
where he can pull in one plate of food for himself or, with no greater effort, a plate that also
provides food for a neighbor to the next cage, he will pull 46 -he just doesn’t care
whether his neighbor gets fed or not. Chimps are truly selfish.
Human children, 47 , are extremely cooperative. From the earliest ages, they
decide to help others, to share information and to participate in achieving common goals. The
psychologist Michael Tomasello has studied this 48 in a series of experiments with
very young children. He finds that if babies aged 18 months see a worried adult with hands
full trying to open a door, almost all will immediately try to help.
There are several reasons to believe that the urges to help, inform and share are not
taught, but naturally 49 in young children. One is that these instincts appear at a
very 50 age before most parents have started to train their children to behave
51 . Another is that the helping behaviors are not improved if the children are rewarded.
A third reason is that social intelligence 52 in children before their general
cognitive(认知的) skills, at least when compared with chimps. In tests conducted by
Tomasello, the human children did no better than the chimps on the 53 world
tests but were considerably better at understanding the social world.
The core (核心) of what children’s minds have and chimps’ don’t is what Tomasello
calls shared intentionality. Part of this ability is that they can 54 what others
know or are thinking. But beyond that, even very young children want to be part of a shared
purpose. They actively seek to be part of a “we”, a group that intends to work toward a(n)55 goal.

构成一篇完整的短文。
My mother’s gift
A dandelion (蒲公英) in my dictionary always reminds me of my lunchtimes with my
mother.
When I was in the third grade, I was picked to be the princess in the school play, and forweeks my mother had painstakingly (费力地) practised my lines with me. But no matter how
easily I delivered them at home, as soon as I stepped onstage, every word disappeared from
my head. Finally, my teacher took me aside. She explained that she had written a narrator’s
part to the play, and asked me to switch roles.
I didn’t tell my mother what had happened when I went home for lunch that day. But she
sensed my unease, and instead of suggesting we practice my lines, she asked if I wanted to
walk in the yard.
It was a lovely spring day and the rose leaves were turning green. We could see yellow
dandelions popping through the grass in bunches, as if a painter had touched our landscape
with a little bit of gold.
I watched my mother casually bend down by one of the dandelions. “I think I’m going to
dig up all these weeds,” she said, suddenly pulling a flower up by its roots. “From now on,
we’ll have only roses in this garden.”
“But I like dandelions,” I protested. “All flowers are beautiful — even dandelions.” My
mother looked at me seriously. “Yes, every flower gives pleasure in its own way, doesn’t it?”
she asked thoughtfully. I nodded, pleased that I had won her over. “And that is true of people
too,” she added. “Not everyone can be a princess, but there is no shame in that.”
Relieved that she had guessed my pain, I started to cry as I told her what had happened.
“But you will be a beautiful narrator,” she said, reminding me of how much I loved to
read stories aloud to her. “The narrator’s part is as important as the part of a princess.”
Over the next few weeks, with her constant encouragement, I learned to take pride in the
role. Lunchtimes were spent reading over my lines and talking about what I would wear.
