It was an early blow to my self-confidence. I was attending my first group meeting in the lab as a postdoc, and
I was pleased that I could follow most of the discussion. Then, in front of everyone, the professor turned to me and
asked about my previous accomplishments. I froze. As a PhD student, I had achieved lots to be proud of. But all of
those were in my home country of Brazil. Now I was in Washington, DC and I didn’t know what the word“accomplishment” meant. So all I could say was “I don’t know”.
I had decided to do a postdoc abroad because I thought the training would help me secure a teaching position.
I applied for and received a Brazilian government fellowship to spend 18 months working abroad and got a position
in a lab. It all seemed so easy—until I actually started.
In a new country, I struggled. After the mortifying lab meeting incident, my confidence took another hit. The
paper I intended to publish did not materialize. I used to be invited to give talks. Now, I was asked to speak more
slowly because of my accent. My confidence was destroyed.
After months of self-doubt, I reminded myself that I had potential. I needed to do something to regain my
confidence. I thought a change of environment might be what I needed. So I made the move.
In another new lab, I still felt insecure. However, I was determined to make the most of the time I had. There
were more opportunities to interact with others, which forced me to talk more. It was awful at first, but with
practice I began to feel more confident in my English. I proposed new projects. I began to receive positive feedback
on my presentations.
My confidence is back. I feel a little like Wonder Woman. She was a strong soldier in her homeland. When she
left, she experienced obstacles and failures only to become even stronger than before.
24. What was the author’s reaction when asked about her previous achievements?
A. She felt insecure. B. She kept silent.
C. She was at a loss. D. She felt proud.
25. Why did the author go abroad?
A. To apply for government fellowship. B. To get a doctor’s degree.
C. To build her own lab. D. To gain experience for a position.
26. What does the underlined word “it” in paragraph 1 refer to?
A. I didn’t give a proper response in a lab meeting.
B. The paper I intended to publish did not materialize.
C. I was asked to speak more slowly because of my accent.
D. I reminded myself that I had potential.
27. What can be the best title for the text?
A. A lab meeting incident B. I found my inside Wonder Woman
C. Brazilians’ confidence improved D. Poor English ruined opportunity

(2023届江苏南京师范大学附属中学高三一模)On January 7, David Bennett went into the operating room at the University of Maryland Medical Center for a
surgical procedure never performed before on a human. The 57-year-old Maryland resident had been hospitalized
for months due to a life threatening disease. His heart was failing him and he needed a new one.
Bennett’s condition left him unresponsive to treatment and ineligible (不合格) for the transplant list or an
artificial heart pump. The physician-scientists at the center, however, had another-also risky- option: transplant (移
植) a heart from a genetically-modified pig.
“It was either die or do this transplant,” Bennett had told surgeons a day before the operation. “I want to live. I
know it’s a shot in the dark, but it’s also my last choice.”
It took the medical team eight hours to finish the operation, making Bennett the first human to successfully
receive a pig’s heart. “It’s working and it looks normal. We are thrilled, but we don’t know what tomorrow will
bring us. This has never been done before,” Barkley Griffith, who led the transplant team, told the New York Times.
While it’s only been five days since the operation, the surgeons say that Bennett’s new pig heart was, so far,
functioning as expected and his body wasn’t rejecting (排斥) the organ. They are still monitoring his condition
closely.
“I think it’s extremely exciting,” says Robert Montgomery, transplant surgeon and director of the NYU
Langone Transplant Institute, who was not involved in Bennett’s operation. The result of the procedure was also
personally meaningful for Montgomery, who received a heart transplant in 2018 due to a genetic disease that may
also affect members of his family in the future. “It’s still in the early days, but still the heart seems to be
functioning. And that in and of itself is an extraordinary thing. Up to now most experimental heart transplant
procedures have been done between pigs and other animals. This is the first time that surgeons have taken it into a
living human.”
28. What do the words “a shot in the dark” underlined in Paragraph 3 mean?
A. Something that costs a fortune. B. Something impossible to succeed.
C. Something drawing public attention. D. Something with an uncertain outcome.
29. What is Barkley Griffith’s attitude to Bennett’s post-operation condition?
A. Negative. B. Cautious.
C. Optimistic. D. Uncaring.
30. What is the text mainly about?
A. The heated debate over the pig heart transplant.
B. David Bennett’s contribution to medical research.C. The first experimental pig heart transplant in the world.
D. The first successful pig heart transplant into a living human.
31. In which section of a magazine may this text appear?
A. Political Affairs. B. Global Entertainment.
C. Sci-Tech Front. D. Financial Window.

This year, in March, I jumped into a heated pool in California to meet a dolphin named Delle. As I approached
her, Delle turned towards me and became playful, greeting me by splashing me with her beak. Delighted, I reached
out to pat her shiny skin. It felt rubbery, which was the main giveaway that Delle the dolphin was a robot.
Just as fake(假的)animals are becoming very realistic,it's becoming increasingly less acccptable to use live
animals for entertainment purposes. Documentaries like Blackfish (2013)and The Cove (2009) have exposed some
of the horrific treatment and suffering of occan mammals. The resulting public protest has made aquariums(水族
馆)controversial, attracting less visitors.
Arguably, entertaining people with captive(圈养的)animals is vital for animalconservation. Many zoos and
aquariums actively try to promote conservation efforts byproviding educational experiences and encouraging
interest in the natural world. This type of entertainment is useful, because it inspires people to care.
At first, this seems like a reason to avoid replacing the animals with technology. However, research in the
rapid-developed field of human-robot interaction is showing astonishing resultson engagement with robots that can
imitate lifelike behaviour. When physically interactive, robots attract a lot of attention. People tend to treat them like
they’re alive, even though theyknow perfectly well they’re just machines.
If we start to replace the animals in our theme parks with machines, will this trend decreaseour wonder for the
natural world? A bunch of people expressed negative gut reactions(本能反应)after I posted video of the robot
dolphin on Twitter. And yet, I don’t believe that using this robotanimals will cause us to forget the worth of living
creatures.
32. Why does the author mention Delle in paragraph 1?
A. To share a special experience. B. To promote rubbery dolphins.
C. To draw attention to robot animals. D. To describe a dolphin preformance.
33. What can we learn about live animals in zoos?
A. They are cruelly treated. B. They make zoos popular.
C. They are well entertained. D. They deserve conservation.34. What is paragraph 4 mainly about?
A. Reasons for replacing animals with robots.
B. Benefits of entertaining people with robots.
C. Research results on interaction with robots.
D. Public concerns over engagement with robots.
35. What’s the author’s attitude to replacing animals with machines?
A. Favorable. B. Intolerant.
C. Doubtful. D. Unclear.

With climate change continuing to worsen, our situation is beginning to feel increasingly serious. ____36____
Is it right? Maybe not.
Techno-optimism is one of the greatest misconceptions when it comes to solutions to ensure our future. It can
be defined as a belief that future technologies will solve all of our current problems. This definition reinforces (强
化) the idea that there’s no reason to panic or change our current energy-intensive lifestyle. All society needs to do
is look to green technology to work its magic. ____37____
One of the best examples of this optimistic misconception is the electric car. Despite being highly regarded as
an eco-friendly way to get around, electric cars are not the end for the future of transport. Batteries in electric cars
use chemical elements which we could be seeing a shortage of by the midcentury. ____38____ Techno-optimism
has led many to believe that if everyone just switched to driving electric vehicles, we would be making incredible
steps towards sustainability. However, the reality is that the amount of resources and energy needed to produce
enough electric vehicles for everyone is not even remotely sustainable.
____39____ Investing in public transportation and moving away from individually owned vehicles. Producing
fewer cars. Improving recycling practices of old batteries. The solutions we seek should not be rooted in new
technology, but be about changing the way our society functions.
Techno-optimism puts too much emphasis on technology and not enough on what we can do right this minute.
Unfortunately, people seem to like the picture that techno-optimism paints. ____40____ It is important to
understand that the problem begins when we see those technologies as a way to make our current lifestyles eco-
friendly. Until we are ready to face the need for a less complex life, we cannot make true progress towardssustainability.
A. So where should we look for answers instead?
B. The modern world’s simple solution is technology.
C. Moreover, they are more energy intensive to produce.
D. Is it a trap that many people have fallen into in recent years?
E. Unfortunately, this is an incredibly dangerous opinion to hold.
F. Despite any technology, we as a whole are not living sustainably.
G. Nevertheless, the truth is, we need a widespread change in our lifestyles.

Joyce is in the fourth grade and he joined the noisy children of his class as usual. “Children! Silence!”
Mangat Madam suddenly entered the class. She announced next week would be math week. “I’d like each of you to
work on a project. You could do it individually or in a group.” she instructed. “The topic for the project needs
approving tomorrow and it has to be displayed at the math week exhibition. The best project will be awarded and
there is also a surprise gift from my side,” she added.
Joyce, who is extremely good at math, sat in the corner seat of the first bench with Karan, an average. Karan
asked Joyce if they could work on the math project together. Joyce replied in a prideful tone, “Ha-ha you want to
join me. I think I will do the project on my own.” Joyce wanted to get awarded and the surprise gift all for himself
from Mangat Madam. After deep consideration, Joyce decided to work on a math magic quiz on the circuit board. The next day in
school, Mangat Madam arrived in the classroom and all the children submitted their topics for math exhibition.
They all chose to work in a group except Joyce. In the following days, Joyce gathered all the materials for the
project such as wires, bulbs (灯泡), a switch and a thin plywood board (胶合板). He worked out a few
mathematical basic operations to be fixed on the board so that when the wire of the circuit touched the right answer,
the bulb glowed. Joyce completed the project and was happy with the result.
The evening before the exhibition, while packing his school bags, Joyce again checked the project to see if it
was working fine. Alas! All the lights that were to glow did not seem to light at all. Without finding the reason,
Joyce was tensed. However, he decided to take the same project to the school as he couldn’t change the topic at the
last minute. Then came the next day, and everybody was fascinated in the exhibition.
