I can’t help but marvel at the tens or hundreds of thousands of small rocks that surround my boots. They were all created from hard surfaces, their edges softening over time. And I wonder, can we learn from a pile of rocks? Even the tallest mountains have worn down; none are as tall as they were 1.000 years ago. And much like a rock, I’ve found my attitude has softened and my desire to better understand others has expanded with each trip around the sun. Once I too was a sharp rock covered in pointy edges. Today, after decades of the waters of life coursing over me, my edges are softer and more understanding. I’m less likely to judge and more interested in learning how we can exist together. But I’m not a rock. I’m a human being filled with all the drama built into my DNA. Two years ago, while traveling in the Pacific Northwest, I watched a restaurant owner ask several people to leave for not wearing masks. Not forceful and not rude. On the door read a sign: “Please wear a mask before entering our restaurant. We don’t like it either, but let’s all do what we can to get through this together.” The group of young men wished to argue about the note. I sat watching, understanding both sides. I’ve been those guys before, using my youthful edges to chip away at the world. What I lost, however, was the ability to grow from experiences by looking through the eyes of others. Inlearning to be more open, I’ve also found more happiness and success. You can fit more rounded rocks in a jar than those with sharp edges. The former look for ways to adjust and make room for others; the latter never give an inch to accommodate others. Time, like the waters rolling against once sharp stones, changes us by washing away our resistance to seeing the world from another’s point of view. I placed a rounded stone into my jacket pocket. Mother Nature is holding class again. 24.What does the author compare the rocks to? A.People’s abilities. B.People’s personalities. C.What nature offers us. D.Challenges we come across. 25.Why did the group of guys argue in the restaurant? A.They were dissatisfied with the owner’s attitude to them. B.They were unwilling to do what the owner wished them to. C.They intended to skip out on the bill due to the poor service. D.They were not allowed to leave the restaurant for their rudeness. 26.What does the author want to tell us with this text? A.We should adjust to new conditions. B.Be brave when in the face of difficulties in life. C.It’s necessary to consider the feelings of others. D.Being open and understanding brings you more happiness. 27.What might be the best title of the text? A.Changing with Time B.Learning from Nature C.Growing from Experiences D.Seeing from a Different Angle C Andy Kong has worked very hard to get to where he is today. He credits becoming a millionaire by 20 to his strict Asian parents who tutored him at a young age by working for the family. Kong, of Danville, Virginia, started working when he was only nine. English wasn’t a strong suit for Andy’s parents, and that’s where he was able to assist his family the most. After school and on weekends he would help out at their family-owned restaurant and nail salons. Not only did he do the labor work, but he was also involved in creating online ads. This was his introduction to the world of online business. Andy started his Amazon business in the eighth grade, when he learned about Amazon. Dropshipping (代发货 模式) from a kid he saw on Instagram, he got inspired and decided to give it a try. Unfortunately, the storeeventually got shut down because he was impatient with the growth. Instead of considering it a failure, he viewed this experience as a life lesson and learned from his mistakes. Meanwhile, his parents never stopped trying to talk him into focusing on school and their retail business. “The biggest challenge when starting a business is getting someone to believe in you,” Andy says. He pushed through and did things for himself even when his loved ones discouraged it. In 2019, Andy met his now business partners, and together, they created an Amazon management company called Project WiFi. This Project has proven to be extremely successful. They currently help over 55 clients run their online businesses, and plan to help many more in the future. When asked about the secret to his success, Andy says, “Learning to sacrifice whether that’s family, friends, or soccer game for a single goal is the only way to succeed, rather than attempting multiple things. If it’s worth doing then it’s worth doing well with no shortcuts.” 28.Why did Andy work in his parents’ shops at a young age? A.Because he could earn some pocket money. B.Because his parents weren’t fluent in English. C.Because his parents could help with his study. D.Because he could get access to the Internet. 29.What does paragraph 3 mainly talk about? A.A new online business model. B.Results of working impatiently. C.Difficulties in Andy’s career. D.Andy’s tense family relationship. 30.What does Andy think contributes to his success? A.His early working experiences. B.Lessons learned from his failures. C.Gaining other people’s trust. D.Focusing on one thing at a time. 31.Which of the following can best describe Andy Kong’s personality? A.Committed and generous. B.Motivated and open-minded. C.Creative and faithful. D.Hard-working and sociable. D Disease-carrying mosquitoes can spread diseases without affecting themselves. Nearly 700 million people get a mosquito-borne illness each year, which results in over one million deaths. Humans experience continuous pressures from disease-carrying mosquitoes in many parts of the world, so we have to find ways to fight against those insects because they keep getting scarier. Even though DEET remains the most commonly used, and most powerful, mosquito repellent ever developed, scientists are actively pursuing effective products based entirely on plant oils. While DEET is an effective contact repellent, many people dislike the oily feel and smell on their skin, and sometimes some people are sensitive to it. Consumers are always interested in alternatives to DEET and other synthetic repellents, so there are numerous natural repellents on the market. In his lab at Iowa State University, Dr. Joel Coats and his team have successfully tested these repellents against three species of dangerous mosquitoes. The first group of the new repellents act through the air. These chemicals have a vapor action that provides protection, and they are called “spatial” repellents, since they act through space. These are potentially most useful in backyards, parks, and houses. The other group are the classic ones that stop insects from standing on a treated surface, such as human skin, clothing or tents; collaborators at the USDA-ARS and BioGents have conducted testing with humans to confirm the effectiveness and identify the very best ones. The new repellents were designed and made from the natural materials in plant essential oils. They maintain many of the advantages of the natural repellents: They are fully biodegradable, with no ecological concerns or environmental wastes, and generally considered safe like the thousands of types of plant essential oils used in the flavor and perfume industries. However, thorough testing will be conducted to determine if they are truly non- poisonous because there is still no enough evidence. 32. What does the author mainly want to show in paragraph 1? A. The way mosquitoes spread disease. B. The high death rate of mosquito-borne illness. C. The difficulty of fighting disease-carrying mosquitoes. D. The urgency of finding tools to fight against mosquitoes. 33. What is a disadvantage of DEET? A. It won’t be effective for long. B. It can’t be applied universally. C. It causes discomfort to the users. D. It greatly harms people’s health. 34. What can we learn about the second group of the new repellents? A. They can kill mosquitoes indirectly. B. They are mainly used in the open air. C. They are more effective on human skin. D. They can prevent mosquitoes from contacting users. 35. What’s the author’s attitude to the new repellents? A. Subjective. B. Objective. C. Doubtful. D. Disapproving. 第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项,选项中有两项为多余选项。 A recent research shows benefits to writing about a traumatic (创伤性的) experience or difficult situation in amanner that psychologists refer to as “expressive writing.” People who do this, recording their deepest thoughts and feelings, often show improved mental and physical health, says James Parker, PhD, a psychology professor at the University of Texas, Austin. My father has a fixed idea that I would become a farmer too. Although I respect him and am indeed skilled at doing some farm work, I don’t agree that I should automatically follow in my father’s footsteps. When I was a teenager, my father happened to take me to an airport which belonged to one of his friends. It was the first time I had seen an aeroplane in real life. Knowing that I had never been on board, my father’s friend Tom offered me an opportunity to fly with him in his small aeroplane. I quickly accepted his offer! When we took off, I felt nervous but thrilled. Being up in the clouds and looking at the view below was unlike anything I had ever felt. I was just enjoying it. I assumed being a pilot would be the most awesome thing in the whole world. From that day a thought crept into my mind that I wanted to become a pilot, but I doubted whether my father would support me. After all, it was a totally different path from what he had planned for me. Therefore, I put the thought to the back of my mind, because I knew he would still insist on holding onto his previous idea. Anyway, besides helping my father on the farm, I would frequently visit Tom’s airport. Gradually, I got familiar with every button and switch on the aircraft and I learned a lot about planes, such as how to fill the plane with fuel, how to check the engines and so on. But what I had learned just left me wanting more, so I decided to go to college to become a professional pilot. Paragraph 1: This time I would not hide my desire any more. ____________________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________ Paragraph 2: At the graduation ceremony, with my father present, I, as “Best Pilot”, had to deliver a speech. ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________
