第一节(共15小题; 每小题2.5分,满分37.5分)
A
Pop art, which emerged in the '50s and rose in popularity throughout the '60s, sought to challenge
the idea of fine art.
Andy Warhol (1928-1987)
Andy Warhol is probably the most influential figure of Pop Art. He became a famous
celebrity himself. Understanding “star-culture”, advertisement and the effect of the media, he
made these the core of his work. His screenprinted images of Marilyn Monroe, Soup cans, and
sensational newspaper stories, quickly became synonymous(同义词) with Pop art.
Roy Lichtenstein (1923-1997)
Roy Lichtenstein is one of the fathers of the Pop Art movement. In November 2015,
Christie’s sold Lichtenstein’s “Nurse”for a record $95.4 million. In this piece, as well as in
other works, we can see how the enlarged imagery of adverts and comics with recognizable
characters, highlights the ironic(讽刺好笑的) images and situations in every-day life.
Mimmo Rotella (1918-2006)
2
学学科科网网((北北京京))股股份份有有限限公公司司Italian artist Mimmo Rotella, was one of the most important figures of post-war European
art. He combined pieces of adverts and posters in his works. For this technique he used a series
of torn posters, gathering them to create a tremendously expressive and powerful aesthetic(美学).
His works Sempre lei Marilyn (2002) and Viva America (1963) are easy to recognize.
James Rosenquist (1933-2017)
James Rosenquist can be considered one of the strongest and most influential modern Pop
Art artists. His work dived deep into cinematography and advertising. He employed techniques
which are conventionally used to create Commercial Art. His works appear as an overwhelming
mixture of fragmented(成碎片的) images of current celebrities, everyday objects and popular
foods - giant lipsticks or spaghetti. If you go to Centre Pompidou, Paris, you can see his work
President-Elect.
21. What artwork will you turn to if you are interested in Andy Warhol?
A. Marilyn Monroe. B. Nurse. C. Viva America. D. President-
Elect.
22. Which artist creates his works by putting together cut and torn posters?
A. Andy Warhol. B. Roy Lichtenstein. C. Mimmo Rotella. D. James
Rosenquist.
23. What do the four pop art artists’ works have in common?

"Everything happens for the best," my mother said whenever I faced disappointment. "If you can
carry on, one day something good will happen. And you'll realize that it wouldn't have happened if not
for that previous disappointment."
Mother was right, as I discovered after graduating from college in 1932. I had decided to try for a
job in radio, then work my way up to sports announcer. I hitchhiked(搭便车)to Chicago and knocked
on the door of every station-and got turned down every time. In one studio, a kind lady told me that in
most cases big stations couldn't risk hiring inexperienced person. "Go out in the remote areas and find a
small station that'll give you a chance," she said. I went back home to Dixon, Illinois.
While there was no radio-announcing jobs in Dixon, my father said Montgomery Ward had opened a
store and wanted a local athlete to manage its sports department. Since Dixon was where I had played
high school football, I applied. The job sounded just right for me.
But I wasn't hired. My disappointment must have shown. "Everything happens for the best," Mom
reminded me. Dad offered me the car to hunt for jobs. I tried WOC Radio in Davenport, Iowa. The
program director, a wonderful Scotsman named Peter MacArthur, told me they had already hired an
announcer.
As I left his office, my frustration boiled over. I asked aloud, "How can a fellow get to be a sport
announcer if he can't get a job in a radio station?" I was waiting for the elevator when I heard MacArthur
calling, "What was that you said about sports? Do you know anything about football?" Then he stood me
before a microphone and asked me to broadcast an imaginary game. The preceding autumn, my team had
won a game in the last 20 seconds with a 65-yard run. I did a 15-minute boost to that play, and Peter told
me I would be broadcasting Saturday’s game!
3
学学科科网网((北北京京))股股份份有有限限公公司司On my way home, as I have many times since, I thought of my mother's words: "If you carry on, one
day something good will happen. Something wouldn't have happened if not for that previous
disappointment".

In 1965 three fathers in Washington State faced a problem familiar to many parents in 2022: how to
keep their restless children entertained. They threw together wooden paddles, a badminton net, and a
perforated (有孔的) plastic ball. The sport “pickleball” was born, getting its name – according to one
story – from a dog named Pickle, who kept running away with the ball.
Today pickleball, which is a mix of tennis, badminton and ping pong, is the fastest-growing sport in
America. In the five years to the end of 2019, pickleball participation grew by more than 7%, while
Americans’ overall activity level stayed flat. Now, the sport has picked up more swing thanks to
COVID-19. Last March, when gyms closed, portable pickleball nets temporarily sold out. “It’s a trend.”
says Derek Heil, an employee at Dick’s Sporting Goods in Dallas, who has seen a sales spike for
pickleball equipment over the last year. Players set up courts, which are half the size of tennis courts, in
driveways.
The 3.5 million Americans who play pickleball are about one-tenth the number who play golf and
one-fifth the number who play tennis. Yet there are reasons to bet on the sport’s spread. Like many
outdoor activities, pickleball is social, but it is easier to learn than tennis and faster and less expensive
than golf. Country clubs and recreation centers are changing some of their tennis courts into pickleball
courts to meet demand. The more places there are to play, the more players will try the sport.
Hoping to predict where the ball is going to land, producers of tennis racquets (球拍) are starting to
make pickleball kit too. “Pickleball is viewed as an opportunity,” says Stu Upson of USA Pickleball, the
sport’s national governing body. As more people take up the sport, demand for televised matches and
sponsorships will increase. Mr. Upson expects that one day pickleball will become an Olympic sport,
although that may be a long shot.
28. What can we say about the sport pickleball?

Russell Warne has spent many hours examining college psychology textbooks. As a professor of
psychology at Utah Valley University , he wasn't looking for insight, but for mistakes—and he found
plenty. Some of the worst concerned IQ tests. “ The most common inaccuracy I found, by far, was the
claim that intelligence tests are biased against certain groups,”he says. Yet intelligence researchers are at
pains to ensure that IQ tests are fair and not culturally biased.“Another very common one was the idea
that intelligence is difficult to measure."
No wonder IQ tests often cause disagreements. But that simply isn't the case.“ Despite the criticism,
the intelligence test is one of the most reliable tests ever invented," says Rex Jung at the University of
New Mexico. Nevertheless , you shouldn't trust the kind of 10-minute test that might pop up in your
Facebook feed.
A comprehensive IQ test takes over an hour and is ideally administered by a professional examiner.
It is designed to assess precisely those cognitive skills that constitute intelligence, so consists of a series
of sub-tests that cover reasoning, mental processing speed, spatial (空间的) ability and more. Shorter IQ
tests, assessing fewer of these skills, can still provide a general indication of someone's mental abilities,
however, because the nature of intelligence means that someone who scores highly on one type of
cognitive test will also do comparatively well on others.
However, particular applications of IQ tests have faced a thorough inspection. A common criticism
of using them to select job applicants is that they only measure certain cognitive skills. They don't
scientifically measure creativity, for instance. Neither do they measure personality, which tends to make
for reliable and hard-working employees—or ability to get on with other people. However, it is rare for
examiners to test IQ independently: candidates might be given a personality test too and a practical
exercise to assess job-related skills. They usually also have to name several professionals to judge.
32. What does the underlined words“biased against" in paragraph 1 probably mean?
A. unfamiliar to B. irrelevant to
C. unfavorable for D. irresponsible for
33. What does Rex Jung think of the intelligence tests?
A. They are inaccurate. B. They are trustworthy.
C. They are properly used. D. They are precisely designed.
34. What can we infer about IQ tests in the last paragraph?
5
学学科科网网((北北京京))股股份份有有限限公公司司A. They are rarely accepted. B. They are heavily criticized.
C. They may still be employed. D. They can motivate creativity.
35. What can be the best title of the passage?
A. Do IQ tests really work? B. Applications of IQ tests.
C. Misinformation in textbooks. D. Can IQ tests shape personality?

项。
Despite being one of the most famous and frequented attractions in the United States,
36 . Here are a few facts about the Grand Canyon you probably don’t know.
We don’t really know how old it is
It has long been believed that the Colorado River began carving the Grand Canyon about 6
million years ago, 37 . It suggests that the process may have begun as far back as 70
million years. In all likelihood, the Grand Canyon as we know it today started out as a series
of smaller canyons 70 million years ago, but the majority of the canyon did not begin to take
shape until much more recently. 3 8 .
Of all Grand Canyon facts, this one is pretty cool— no word-play intended. Sudden
changes in altitude have an enormous impact on temperature and rainfall, so the weather you are
experiencing could differ dramatically, depending on where you are in the Grand Canyon. The
coldest, wettest weather station in the region is the Bright Angel Ranger Station on the North
Rim, while the hottest (and one of the driest) is just 8 miles away at Phantom Ranch.
There are lots of fossils in the area
While the dinosaur might have missed out on seeing the Grand Canyon, lots of other
fossils have been found. 39 . They vary from ancient marine fossils dating back 1.2
billion years to fairly recent land mammals that left their remains in canyon caves about 10,000
years ago.
Fish are relatively uncommon in the area
Prior to modern flood control measures, the Colorado River provided a uniquely difficult
habitat for fish, with heavy mud with small rocks, frequent floods, and temperatures ranging
from extreme heat in summer to sub-freezing in winter. Consequently, only eight fish species are
native to the Grand Canyon, 4 0 .
A.but a 2012 study contained a real shocker
B.and many other species are found outside this area.
C.and six of them are found nowhere outside of the Colorado River.
D.The weather in the Grand Canyon is really cool.
E.This indicates that other creatures frequented the location.
F.The Grand Canyon creates its own weather.
G.Grand Canyon National Park still holds some surprises.

The darkness was gathering as she wobbled (摇晃) in high heels along the side of the highway. The
car had come to an unexpected stop, and like a normal teenager she did the only thing she could think
of... get out and walk.
It was cold and late, and home was far away. This could be a long night. If only someone would stop
and offer her a ride. She prayed for help and dragged herself forward.
The lights of a truck shone from behind as it approached. "Maybe he will stop," she hoped. The
brake lights flashed on as it stopped. Next moment, the car door opened. A wordless invitation was
extended and she understood. Without hesitation, the girl climbed up into the seat and closed the door.
Slowly the truck pulled back onto the road and disappeared into the night, never to be seen again.
I woke up in a cold sweat, frightened. Was it a dream or was it a vision? It was unbelievably real,
and the girl was my daughter! I jumped from my bed and ran to her room. Her bed was empty.
I stood in horror trying to think why she hadn't come home. As the mental fog began to lift, I
remembered she was visiting her friend that evening. Perhaps she stayed there for the night. It was 1:30
am, but I raced to the phone and dialed a number.
"Hello?" The voice was heavy with sleep.

"No, she left here a few hours ago. She should have been home at least by midnight!" The voice on
the other end began to reflect my own panic.
Over the next forty-five minutes I alternated between lying in pray and pacing the floor in anxiety.
At 2:15 am lights appeared as a car turned up our long driveway. I could tell immediately that it was
not my daughter's car.
