Pam Bales left her car and stepped onto the snow-covered Jewell Trail. She planned a six-hour hike through
New Hampshire’s Mount Washington State Park. The hike up the lower part of Jewell was pleasant. At 8:30 am,
still below the tree line, she took the first in a series of on-the-trail selfies.
Less than an hour later, she took another photo, after she’d climbed into colder air and deeper snows. She
made her way across the snow-covered ridge toward Mount Washington. Then she noticed something: a single set
of footprints in the snow ahead of her. She’d been following faint tracks all day and hadn’t given them much
thought, because so many people climb Jewell Trail. But these, she realized, had been made by a pair of trainers,
not suitable for hiking on snow.
By 11 am, Bales was getting cold and decided to abandon her plan. The only thing keeping Bales on Gulfside
Trail was the trainer tracks in the sonw. As she fought the wind and heavy sleet (雨夹雪), the tracks made a hard
left-hand turn off the trail.
Now she alarmed. She was sure the hiker could get through in the ow visibility and was heading straighttoward the challenging trails of the Great Gulf Wilderness. Bales stood there, stunned. The temperature and clouds
were in a race to find their lowest point, and darkness was mere hours away. She turned to the left and called out,
“Hello!” into the frozen fog.
Nothing. She called out again: “Is anybody out there? Do you need help?”
The strong westerly winds carried her voice away. She blew into her rescue whistle. For a fleeting moment she
thought she heard someone reply, but it was just the wind playing games with her mind. She stood listening, then
turned and walked cautiously in the direction of the single set of tracks. Bales followed the tracks cautiously for 20
to 30 meters. She rounded a slight corner and saw a man sitting motionless.

Every early morning Gleen would run to school to start the fire and warm the room before his teacher and
classmates arrived. Their little schoolhouse was heated by an old- fashioned coal stove in winter.
One chilly morning, the teacher and students arrived, only to find the schoolhouse in flames. Gleen was
dragged out of the flaming building, unconscious. The lower half of his body was badly burned and he was
immediately sent to a nearby hospital. From his bed, Gleen faintly heard the doctor talking to his parents. “He could
hardly survive, ” the doctor said in a low voice, “for the terrible fire had destroyed the lower half of his body. ”
“I don’t want to die, mum. ” Gleen told his mother. He was determined to survive. To the doctor’s amazement,
he did survive. When the serious danger was past, he again heard the doctor and his parents speaking quietly. “He
was bound to be disabled for life, ” the doctor whispered, “since the fire had destroyed so much flesh in the lower
part of his body. He can’t walk like a normal person. ”
“I will walk, dad. ” Gleen told his father. Once more, the brave boy made up his mind. He would not bedisabled. But unfortunately, he has no feeling from the waist down. His thin legs just hung there, lifeless.
Ultimately, he was discharged from the hospital.
Back home, Gleen’s mother would squeeze and rub his little legs every day, hoping to help them recover, but it
made little difference. He was either in bed or attached to a wheelchair. Yet his determination that he would walk
never faded. Instead, he kept thinking about how to make himself stand up and walk again.
On a lovely summer day, as usual, Gleen was wheeled out into the yard for some fresh air, where his father
had just built a fence by driving the stakes (木桩) into the grassland. Sitting in the wheelchair, Gleen was staring at
the fence around the yard.

Matt watched the weather with concern. He and his wife, Nora, had planned to stay at a hotel, but now he wondered
whether they should go. After phoning the hotel, they decided to make the trip. By the time they neared the hotel
six hours later, they were caught in a snowstorm. When they finally arrived, they were both cold and exhausted.
They checked into their room and went to bed early
When they awoke the next day, they found the snow had continued overnight. The cars in the parking lot were

way to the parking lot, where others were digging out their cars.
With most cars freed by noon, the guests set off down the driveway. But when they reached the main road, the
path was blocked by a two-meter-high wall of snow. Matt climbed out of his car to check There was no road in

They heard the avalanche (雪崩) before they saw it. The avalanche gathered speed, grabbing rocks and trees and

Alexis Langlois, who manages a large farm, heard her neighbor crazily knocking on her front door on a
Monday afternoon.
“There’s an emergency”, Amber Countryman yelled. “The horses are stuck in the water.” Langlois was struck
with “absolute panic”. She threw on her winter boots — without socks — and rushed toward the small pond on the
80-acre property. She was surprised by what she saw: four horses were in the water up to their necks in 10 feet of
ice water.
She immediately called 911.While waiting for help to arrive, “people just started showing up,” she said.
“Neighbors were pouring in. People came with ropes, chainsaws, shovels and pick axes.”
“I grabbed a bunch of supplies,” said Countryman, whose two teenagers and their friend also as sited with the
effort.
“It was-8℃that day,” she said, adding that she brought out handwarmers and water for the helpers.
Everyone was determined to get the horses out of the pond — which is about 15feetwide.
Beneath a six-inch layer of ice, the water was “just barely above freezing”, said Chris Yerkes, the South
Kalispell Fire Department chief who rushed to the pond with about a dozen volunteer personnel.
When the firefighters arrived, neighbors had already attempted to pave a path through the ice toward the edge
of the pond using pick axes, sledgehammers and shovels, and “we continued with that effort.” Yerkes said.
Unfortunately, “as we got closer to the edge, we realized there was about three to four inches of mud.”The thick layer of mud — which the rescuers couldn’t cut through — blocked the horses from climbing out.
Firefighters enlisted additional support from Flathead County Animal Control, as well as staff from local equestrian
organization Rebecca Farm.
“There had to have been at least 60 people here,” Langlois said. “It was very swift action on everybody’s
part.”

Mark Gayowski, a 34-year-old carpenter, was determined to ski in the western Canadian province of British

North America’s oldest ski resorts. Reich asked him to call or text her when he finished the run.
“I will,” he replied. Then he glided towards the ravine(溪谷).
Soon there was no way for him to ski around the logs and downed branches that boxed him in. He could feel
the weather starting to change.
Reich wondered why her son hadn’t texted or called. She began to worry. She called him but couldn’t get

Mike Hudson, a 41-year-old search-and-rescue manager in the neighbouring village of Fruitvale, was just
going home when his phone rang. It was a call from the Emergency Coordination Centre, asking if he could lead a
mission to find a missing skier.
After 12 hours in the ravine, Gayowski’s phone battery died, and he’d abandoned his skis after struggling. He

Hudson dispatched two teams of four rescuers into the ravine a. V am on December 31. But as the hours

cent chance that Gayowski would survive the night.
The darkness was setting in again. Gayowski needed to keep moving.
At daybreak, Hudson returned to the command centre to prepare his teams for another push. Gayowski’s
parents sat home, feeling desperate.
Sunlight came through the trees in the ravine. Gayowski was grateful to be alive. He struggled to move

Shannon St. Onge, who is the director of finance at First Nations University of Canada, received a call about a
check that needed her signature around 3 p.m. She rushed to the city of Regina, which is about 15 miles from her
home in Pense, to get the job done. She finished her task quickly and began heading back home because she knew a
huge snowstorm was coming.
However, the storm hit hours earlier than predicted, and before she knew it, she was driving straight through a
snowstorm! The determined woman kept driving slowly. But eventually, as night fell, she was forced to stop the
vehicle entirely.
“There was no visibility, and there was no way I was going any further, because it would have been far too
dangerous,” she later said.
She called 911 for assistance, but the operator told her that because of the heavy snowstorm, many people
needed help, and all the rescue workers had been sent out. What she could do was to wait on the spot. Hearing this,Shannon started to worry, “Would the gas tank last long? What if I fell asleep and the tailpipe was blocked?”
Looking around for clues about her location, Shannon made out a sign that said Bouvier Lane. She shared the
location with her friends. As luck would have it, one of her friends recognized a farm near where Shannon was
stuck, and said, “I know that family. I’ll contact them.”
While waiting for the rescue, Shannon saw two cars struggling on the road. She hurried forward and asked
them to stop and wait.
Andre Bouvier Sr., an 80-year-old retired farmer, was enjoying a quiet evening with his 70-year-old wife when

Most of the fire accidents happen because of our carelessness. Every year there are many fire accidents,
resulting in a great loss of property and life. Many of these can be easily avoided if we are more careful and
observe certain rules regarding fire-protection. There have been some unforgettable accidents in my life. One has
left me a shocking impression.
It was 9 am on Sunday. I was busy in doing my homework at home and my mother was preparing tea for me in
the kitchen when suddenly there were shouts, cries and a lot of confusing noise coming from outside. Immediately,
I rushed out to figure out what was all that. I was informed that a supermarket warehouse (仓库) in our
neighborhood had caught fire.
Wanting to help put out the fire, I ran to the place. A big crowd of neighbors had collected as well. Some were
helping throw water and some were trying to beat the fire with sticks. Although all the people struggled to help, before long, the fire, driven by the strong winds, swallowed the whole building. Before the owner, the employers
and all the neighbors could to anything more, huge and high columns of smoke and flames spread fast. Seeing
things were almost out of control, someone called firefighters at once. With all the belongings inside burning in the
fire, the owner could do nothing except cry, helpless and heartbroken.
It was a horrible scene which I could never forget. Without powerful equipment, we could just wait for
firefighters’ coming.
During the waiting for fire rescue, many began talking about how the fire broke out and who was to blame for
the accident. Were the members of the supermarket themselves or the others responsible for the accident? When
people continued chatting about the possible causes of the fire, the fire-engines soon arrived at the scene.

“I wish we hadn’t come on this trip!” Jeff’s voice echoed across the narrow canyon (峡谷). His father stopped,
breathing heavily. “This is hard on you, but you’ve got to come through with courage!” He gently placed his hand
on the boy’s shoulder. “Now, I don’t know if I can make it without stopping every so often. You’re young, but
you’re strong and fast. Do you remember the way back from here to the road, if you had to go alone?”
Jeff flashed back to the painful scene of Mark, his seventeen-year-old brother at their campsite. His leg was
bitten by a snake yesterday and they did first aid with the wound so that it wouldn’t get so serious before they
returned home. But this morning Mark couldn’t move, and the pain got worse. He needed medical attention right
away otherwise he might lose his life. The only way is to get the rescue helicopter as soon as possible. They had
left their phone in the car, which was stopped out of the canyon and it must have been out of power by then.
Leaving Mark at the campsite and seeking help was their only choice.
“Jeff, could you do it?”
Jeff looked to the end of the canyon, several miles away. He nodded and a plan began to take hold in his mind.“What is the name of that little town we stopped, Dad?” There must be a hospital there.
“Flint. We parked at the side of the road a few miles out of Flint.”
Jeff nodded. Then they continued climbing. Stone by stone, they made their way up the canyon. Gradually,
Jeff’s father grew smaller and smaller in the distance. Jeff waved to him and then climbed toward the road. Two
hours later, he finally reached the road and struggled toward the town, almost exhausted.
“Can’t stop,” he thought. “Mark’s in big trouble. Keep going.” Suddenly, he saw a truck heading toward him.

In my free time, I like hiking challenges. It’s how I feed myself, physically, mentally, spiritually.
I looked over at my husband, Mike, and friends Emily and Jean, who’d joined me on this climb to the top of
Nippletop Mountains. They were all fit, experienced hikers, though not as enthusiastic about it as me, Mike
especially. He’s more of a tech guy.
We’d set off in the morning, dressed in layers against coldness. It took us just less than five hours to cover the
five miles to the peak of Nippletop, with more snow and ice on the rocky trail the closer we got to the top. It was
almost 1:30 pm now. We started to head down soon before it got dark.
A friendly young hiker waved to us. “Hey, want me to take your picture?”
“Absolutely!”
Mike gave the hiker his phone. That hiker snapped a few pictures for us.
We continued. I said, “I want to take a different trail so as to save time. It’s steeper (陡峭) but shorter.”I led the way. They followed me with some distance apart. Carefully I sidestepped down the slope. A quarter
mile down, I stopped and looked up the trail for the others. I couldn’t see them. Then a scream broke the quietness.
Mike! He sprawled (瘫坐) on a steep, narrow, wooded part of the trail, about 100 feet ahead of me. Ice everywhere.
His hands were holding his right leg tightly.
I shouted, “What happened?”
“I slipped on the ice,” he said. “Then I heard this crack. It hurts badly!”
Moments later, we got to Mike. “What should we do?” I asked. Jean checked Mike’s ankle. “We need to splint
(夹板) it,” she said.
We fixed a hiking pole to Mike’s leg. What now? There was no way the three of us women could carry him
down this mountain.
I pulled out my cell phone and called 911. Nothing. No signal. It was the same with the other three phones.
”Can I help?” It was the guy who’d taken our picture at the mountain top.

At a restaurant in scenic Augsburg, Germany, waiter Paul Blachut was busy at work. It was a warm Sunday
afternoon in May 2021 and many people had come for relaxation at this pretty place beside the Lech river.
From behind the bar, Paul, 24, had a good view of the river; there were stone steps that stretched some 20
meters down from the restaurant to the riverbank. He could see that, along the S-shaped shore, people were
picnicking and children were playing. Many were cooling their feet in the river. The melt water from the Alps
meant the water was very cold at that time of year, and it flowed quickly.
Among those enjoying the cooling water were a mother and her two teenage daughters. They were standing on
the edge of the riverbank, playing with an inflatable tube(充气船)when, suddenly, the girls lost their footing and
were caught in the river’s current.
It all happened so fast. The girls desperately grabbed on to the tube, which their mother was sitting in, pullingher into the river, too. Then all three were being carried away by the current.
A bystander raced up the steps to the restaurant, and Paul looked up from his work when he heard the shout: “I
think three people are drowning in the Lech!”
Paul could only see a tube moving up and down in the river. Then he spotted the three women a short distance
away, waving their arms, trying to grasp anything they could. Paul’s mind raced. Why wasn’t anyone helping them?
Frightened, he saw that one of the them kept sinking.
Despite having no lifesaving training, he rushed down to the riverbank, quickly taking his cell phone, wallet
and keys from his pockets and pulling off his T-shirt. Then he jumped into the river. He didn’t care about the cold;
all he could think about was saving the women. It was obvious that they were helpless.

It was 7:15 a. m. on Monday, and Frank, an engineer, was on his morning run along the East River. Suddenly,
something caught his eyes-a large 60-year-old man balancing on the four-foot-high railing (栏杆) that guarded the
path from the water. Curious and confused, Frank stopped to get closer to the scene, only to find the man took a
step forward and dropped into the dark river below.
When Frank reached the railing, the man was struggling in the water, clearly unable to swim. He screamed
desperately for help as the current pulled him away from the bank.
By now, a crowd had gathered on land. People had called the police, but it was unclear when they’d get there.
Without hesitation, dropping his phone and keys on land, Frank jumped in. Just as the old man was losing strength,
Frank grabbed hold of him. Unexpectedly, the strong wind forced the water to tear them apart again.
Having seen what had happened, another two joggers made a quick response. They dived from where they
stood into the river, and swam towards the pair, who were about 30 yards from the seawall. Immediately they
caught up to the old man. The three stabilized him, with one supporting his back and the other two holding him upfrom either side. However, the old man was unresponsive, but not unconscious. As the men made their way towards
the seawall that stretched for blocks in each direction, Frank had an awful realization: With the water flowing a
good eight feet below the lip of the wall and no ladder or dock in sight, there was no way out of the river. ”A rescue
boat is on its way, “ someone yelled to them. The old man, who was six foot two and weighed around 260 pounds,
was deadweight in his rescuers’ arms, which meant they could only use their legs to save themselves. They were

It was a sunny summer morning, the breeze blowing gently. As planned, Jackson took a trip into the remote
wilds near Olom Village, in the Sakha Republic, Russia. His four-year-old daughter, Karina, found him leaving and
wanted to follow him to give her dad a surprise. She slipped out of the house, with nobody realizing it, even
Jackson.
Unfortunately, she walked too slowly on her way and soon she was lost in the vast, dangerous Siberian
wilderness. Luckily for her, her dog, Naida, followed Karina just as the girl followed her father. The two suddenly
found themselves walking with no one in sight, drifting away from their home as the hours went by.
Night fell. Karina’s father returned home, and it didn’t take long after that for the whole family to realize what
had happened. They couldn’t find Karina anywhere. They turned to the police for help immediately. And they took
action at once in search of the lost girl.
A whole week had gone by and there was no progress of the rescue in sight. The whole family was stuck in
desperation, but Karina’s mum never lost hope. “Many stopped believing that she was alive, but as a mother I felt
that she would be found soon.”In fact, Karina did survive. Although Siberia is an extremely dangerous place even for otherwise fit adults due
to its wildlife and climate, she made it. She survived by eating wild fruits and drinking water from nearby rivers,
and she faced the freezing nighttime temperatures by cozying up in a bed of grass. Naida did its best too, scaring
away the wild animals and keeping each other warm by sleeping close together at night.
After nine days struggling to survive, scared and alone, Karina could only be grateful about one thing: her
good friend was by her side. Naida gave its strength, and actively helped the four-year-old to stay alive for that
long.
This morning, Naida suddenly walked away and headed back into town, ignoring Karina’s hopeless cry and leaving
her completely alone.

Undoubtedly, Mother Nature is always attractive to kids. In our childhood, how often did we turn a deaf ear to
our parents’ advice? Very often! Thus, we landed ourselves in a situation where we greatly regretted our act of not
having listened to the advice of the wise.
Such an unforgettable experience I had at the age of 7 gave me an invaluable lesson, after which I deeply
understood why my gentle mother was repeating the boring suggestions and I would try to take her suggestions
seriously.
In my childhood, I was so crazy about nature that even playing among the colorful flowers in our garden could
make my day. Our house was next to the woods which had always stirred up(激起) great curiosity in me in wanting
to find out what was within. Every time I saw fascinating butterflies dancing from the woods, my curiosity grew.
But my mother didn’t like me wandering off on my own and always ensured that I was within her sight. Even
if she allowed me to explore the surrounding area on my own, it was only to be somewhere near the house. Being
as curious as the cat, I always desired to explore the woods. It seemed as if my mother had understood my desire,
so she had warmed me on lots of occasions never to enter the woods alone.
“Mom, can I go out and play in the garden?” I asked.
“Sure,” she would reply each time. “Kate, you can play in the garden but you must promise me one thing—
only when I’m with you can you go into the woods. There are no cases of animal attacks on humans, but it’s still
dangerous for a little kid like you. It’s too easy to get lost in the woods.”
“Sure, you’ve said that many times!” I answered without patience at her repeated reminders.

Nick had a difficult childhood, with neither mom nor dad giving him love because his parents died when he
was ten. Now he was 27 years old. He had no friends around. As for his work, delivering newspapers couldn’t
support his family. He had a wife, Kara Lewis, but he did not know exactly how to get along with her. His life was
in a mess and he couldn’t see his future.
That night, Nick had a quarrel with his wife and he’d stormed out of their apartment, leaving his phone behind
so she couldn’t contact him. Then he drove the car and smoked in the parking lot; he liked to go there when he
needed to be alone. Looking up at the stars, he sat in silence for 15 minutes or so. Then he decided to head home.
He was on the way back to the apartment just after the midnight when he saw the house on fire. Flames were
climbing up the front porch, lapping at the home’s walls. Hurrying out of the vehicle, he immediately regretted not
having his phone. “Hey, help, the house is on fire!” he yelled into the night. Nobody responded. He ran around to
the back door. To his amazement, it swung open. Without thinking about the danger, Nick dashed into the burning
building.
It was a two-story house where Walter family lived with two daughters,18-year-old Kay and 2-year-old Sally.
That night the parents were not at home, with their 18-year-old daughter taking care of Sally.
The curtains were melting as Nick ran through the hallway of the burning house, peering into rooms that were
in flames and searching to see if anyone was home. Just then, one face emerged from a room at the top of the stairs
and peered down at him, her eyes wide. “Your house is on fire. You need to go!” Nick yelled, hurrying her out of
the house. After they were out into the fresh air, Nick heard the girl kept screaming, “There’s a baby in there! I
couldn’t find her in the bedroom.”

Early in 1999, our family had to drive several hundred miles to Billings, Montana, to visit a hospitalized
family member. Between our travel, accommodation, and having given most of our available cash to help our
relatives out with expenses, we had very little money with us when we left to return home. It was getting dark when
we drove out of Billings.
At first, we didn’t notice that our headlights were dimming(变暗), and that was probably why we missed the
exit for the interstate(州际公路) leading home. About 40 miles later, we began to see that nothing along the
highway was familiar to us. In 35 more miles, we saw an exit to a town that wasn’t anywhere near where we were
supposed to be.
With eight miles to the next exit, we began to realize the headlights were dangerously dim. The car began to
make a series of short explosive sounds, which made us feel extremely worried. I had to turn off the lights to keep it
running. At the foot of the exit slope, there was a small post office in front of us. The car stopped running
completely as we pulled into the parking lot.
I soon determined that there was something wrong with the alternator (发电机). It was 7:00 in the evening and
we were in Rosebud, Montana, which was a tiny town with no services. To make things worse, the heavy snow was
falling. We needed to find our family a safe place to spend the cold night and find an alternator to fix the car the
next morning. Hopelessly, we couldn’t see any other buildings around us, and the rest of the town was nearly a mile
away. Even if we walked there, we knew that there was probably no hotel or parts store.
