Imperial Bricks
Imperial(皇家的) bricks were made completely for imperial buildings, especially palaces,in
the Ming and Qing Dynasties.Mainly made in Suzhou, the bricks were transported through the
Grand Canal to Beijing. They have a fine quality, and are strong and hard. They have a pure blue-
green color like a mirror and produce a metal sound when knocked.Given their high cost, they are
properly called the golden bricks. The craft (工艺品) has been on the national-level intangible
cultural heritage list since 2006.
Peking Duck
Peking duck has been a famous dish from Beijing since the imperial times, characterized by

cucumber and sweet bean sauce, often with pancake rolled around fillings. It was selected as a
national-level intangible cultural heritage in 2008.

play between a source of light and a screen.Various sight effects can be achieved by moving both
the dolls and the light source. It is popular in many places along the Grand Canal, including Hebei
and Zhejiang. In 2011,Chinese shadow play was listed on the UNESCO Representative List of the
Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

This is the digital age,and the advice to managers is clear. If you don’t know what ChatGPTis or dislike the idea of working with a robot, enjoy your retirement. So,as for the present you
should get for your manager this festive season ,a good choice may be anything made of
paper.Undoubtedly,it can serve as a useful reminder of where the digital world’s limitations
lie.Several recent studies highlighted the enduring value of this ancient technology in several
different aspects.
A study by Vicky Morwitz of Columbia Business School,Yanliu Huang of Drexel University
and Zhen Yang of California State University,Fullerton, finds that paper calendars produce
different behaviours from digital calendars.Users of old-fashioned calendars made more detailed
project plans than those looking at an app , and they were more likely to stick to those
plans.Simple dimensions seem to count. The ability to see lots of days at once on a paper calendar
matters.
Here is another study from Maferima Touré-Tillery of the Kellogg School of Management at
Northwestern University and Lili Wang of Zhejiang University. In one part of their study, the
researchers asked strangers to take a survey.Half the respondents were given a pen and paper to fill
out a form;the other half were handed an iPad.When asked for their email address to receive
information, those who used paper were much likelier to decide on a positive answer. The
researchers believe that people make better decisions on paper because it feels more consequential
than a digital screen.Paper-and-pen respondents were more likely than iPad users to think their
choices indicated their characters better.
Researchers had other findings. They found shoppers were willing to pay more for reading
materials in printed form than those they could only download online.Even the sight of someone
handling something can help online sales.Similarly, people browsing(浏览) in a virtual-reality(虚
拟现实) shop were more willing to buy a T-shirt if they saw their own virtual hand touch it.
4.How does the author lead in the topic?
A.By telling a story. B.By giving examples.
C.By raising questions. D.By describing a situation.
5.Why can paper calendars make users stick to plans better?
A.They are a better reminder.
B.They can show more detailed plans.
C.They provide chances for people to practice writing.
D.They provide a better view of many days’ plans at a time.
6.Which of the following did paper influence based on paragraph 3?
A.Decision. B.Sympathy. C.Efficiency. D.Responsibility.
7.What can we infer from the last paragraph?
A.Paper posters will greatly promote sales online.
B.E-magazines are thought less valuable than paper ones.
C.Seeing others buy will increase one’s purchasing desire.D.People prefer items made of paper instead of other materials.

Latin America’s first renewable fuel-powered,garbage-trapping wheel is cleaning one of
Panama’s dirtiest rivers. It is powered by water and solar energy. It pulls waste out of the Juan Diaz
River. Most of the waste comes from the capital area of Panama City where about 2 million people
live.Thousands of kilograms of garbage flow down the river into the ocean each year.
As the leader of the project,Robert Getman said,“Cleaning beaches is good, but it is
more effective and cheaper to trap garbage in rivers because when it reaches the ocean, the
environmental and economic cost becomes too high.”
The Juan Diaz River is one of the most polluted in Panama.Waste systems in the area are
poor, and land development is not well supervised(监督).The river also passes through Panama
City, one of Central America’s largest cities.Still, the waterway and its mangrove trees are
home to wildlife like turtles and birds.According to this situation, the environmental group Marea
Verde launched the wheel in late September, which is named Wanda Diaz.By the middle of
October,it had gathered 28.6 cubic meters of plastic bottles from the water.Over five years,
Marea Verde projects have slowed the spread of waste along the Juan Diaz River and other
Panama’s rivers.Several years ago,the group launched its “Barrier or Trash” technology,a
floating device. It captured more than 100 metric tons of waste in the Matias Hernandez River
within two years.
The Baltimore Bay “Trashwheel” in the United States is the model for Marea Verde’s
machine,Wanda Diaz. However,Wanda Diaz is more advanced and superior in terms of
technology, and it even has cameras with artificial intelligence(AI) that can recognize and sort
different plastics.
“We want each of us to raise awareness that we can prevent the death of the Juan Diaz
River,”said Marea Verde’s leader Sandy Watemberg. She expressed her hope that the wheel
would also help many more other rivers. But she also pointed out that those who accustomed
themselves to single-use plastics needed to rethink their behavior.
8.Which words best describe the garbage-trapping wheel?
A.Green and practical. B.Effective but costly.
C.Renewable and simple. D.Powerful but energy-wasting.
9.What is mainly talked about in paragraph 3?
A.Great damage to Panama City.
B.The importance of the Juan Diaz River.
C.Measures taken to battle wildlife killing.
D.The background information of Marea Verde projects.
10.What can we learn about Wanda Diaz?
A.It has AI to break down plastics. B.It is the model for “Trashwheel”.C.It has AI cameras to remove plastics. D.It is an updated version of “Trashwheel”.
11.What message does Sandy Watemberg seem to convey?
A.People should not use plastics anymore.
B.The death of the river is unpreventable.
C.Humans’ living habits matter in river protection.
D.River protection has received the attention of all.

enthusiastic, and hardworking young fellows. This helps to promote their independence. 1 But
as a team, they are not so good, which is crucial for the organization.
2 He invited everyone to a hall for a game consisting of 3 rounds. For the first round,he

called them back in,with more balloons scattered around without names on them.He declared that
they had 15 minutes to find the balloon with their name written on it. 3
For the next round,Bruce told them if any team member found a balloon with a name on it,
he or she had to give it to the owner of the name. All started searching, and within a couple of
minutes everyone had their own balloon with their name on it.Bruce went to the dais and
said,“You see,in the second round,no one was able to find their balloons as they were
working on individual targets. But in the final round, within a couple of minutes, everyone had
the balloon with them. 4 ”
